Shinkai Sushi is a very busy restaurant during meal time. My friend and I learned that the hard way when we arrived at about 6:30 pm. Fortunately I was the first one on the waitlist. Parking is a little tight as this little strip mall is quite popular. The restaurant itself was quite small with about 15 tables available. The sushi chefs were tucked in a small corner adjacent to the one coed restroom. Ordering is quite interesting where a QR code was used. You made your choices and submitted it to the kitchen. One major issue is that there is no way to tell when our order was coming. After about a 25 minute wait (as I said busy meal time) our order started to arrive. We ordered a Hamachi Kama, Dragon Roll, Orange Ocean Roll, cheesecake and black sesame ice cream. Everything was tasty and very nice. The prices were very reasonable compared to other restaurants. It would seem that the restaurant could be understaffed.
Food? Amazing!! I definitely found a new go-to sushi spot in the East Bay. I loved how vast their menu was and how fresh the sushi actually tasted. We ended up coming a second time later in the week for takeout when it wasn't as busy as the day we decided to stop by. Some highlights: + Salmon Salmon! ($17): As a salmon lover, this roll was literallyyyy perfect. It had salmon skin, salmon, and salmon roe. The sushi was well constructed and tasted great. + Kaisen Don: SUCH amazing quality!! I loved how buttery the uni was and how light the scallop was especially. I'm also a sucker for seared salmon so this was just great all around. Our food came out fairly quickly which was greatly appreciated after a long wait. The main con of our experience -- we visited for a Father's Day dinner and were the second party on their whiteboard waitlist, but we still ended up waiting a little over an hour for a table. Unfortunately, our name got erased from the waitlist twice due to staff mix-ups. Since most parties were waiting outside, we had one person from our group waiting inside to listen for our name. * The first time, I think the server mistook us for another party and erased our name. We let him know and he let us rewrite our name in it's original place. * The second time, he called our party's name, erased us from the board, and our friend immediately went outside to bring the rest of us inside. Before we could all walk in, another party of 6 (whose name was actually below ours on the waitlist) walked in first. We let the server know they weren't with us, but instead of acknowledging the mix-up, he said they had a reservation - even though he had just called our party's name and removed us from the waitlist. We ended up having to rewrite our name on the whiteboard, and there was never an apology for either mix-up. I think the process could've been handled much better by confirming which party was actually being seated instead of only calling names to people waiting inside, especially since most guests were waiting outside. -- Overall, I think the food was amazing but it was unfortunate that the service wasn't as great as expected. Understandably, it was a busy day but I hope they're able to find better ways to manage their waitlist and seating process during peak hours.
Tucked inside a strip mall, this is a small sushi restaurant. Call in ahead if your group is larger than 4 people. Menu is pretty big for a small operation. Our group order udon for the kids, a few rolls, an unagi don, a few nigiri orders, and a few of the sashimi sampler boxes. The food was ok and served our cravings. The sampler boxes were big enough for one hungry adult or two adults to share. The unagi don was the smallest don I've ever seen and for $25 it felt overpriced. The rolls were comparable to any other restaurant. The host and waiter were friendly and took our orders and brought out water and tea quickly. Our server on the other hand had this look of disdain. When we asked for a fork for the kids or more ice for water, he looked rather annoyed.
Tucked in the corner of the plaza, first floor! It's quite small but very cozy! We came in a Friday night but didn't have to wait too long. We ordered Ikageso Karagee but the order came out wrong twice - we received the grilled whole squid instead but didn't want to wait so we just left it alone. When it did come out it had a quail shell (pictured) on it which I didn't see originally until pointed out. I'd still come here since the food was good over!
Very solid sushi and Japanese food joint - above average fish quality for a pretty good value (all things considered) What impressed me was the omakase, the fish was notably more flavorful and had higher fat content. Flavors and seasoning all balanced well, they put shiso leaf bits in between under the typically gamier fish and rice. Savory roe bits dot the top of some of the stronger tasting fishes. And 8pc were only $40. Salmon rolls (salmon salmon) and (orange ocean) were both good. Nice citrus hit in orange ocean but doesn't overpower - salmon salmon roll had good crisp and umami from the fried skin. The sashimi platter was solid - nothing that blew my mind but it was pretty good quality fish, only minor complaint was it was cut into oddly shaped chunks and not consistent in texture between each bite Also they gave a LOT of plum wine, not skimpy at all!
First timer here. My fiance decided to treat me to sushi as we haven't had any quite some time. To start, salted edamame on the house is what I've grew up being used to, and seems like a lot of places don't do anymore. Shinkai does-- automatic plus for me. I ordered the Sushi Crafter Box and salivated as it being walked over to my table. It looked so satisfying that I didn't even want to dig in. But of course I had to. It was incredible! I normally don't love fatty tuna because the texture can be inconsistent and veiny but it was soft and not veiny at all! My fiance ordered 2 rolls, and a sashimi appetizer and loved it all. We were able to share everything we ordered and both left very satisfied. The service was fantastic, waters being refilled without having to ask and the restaurant was clean. It is a bit small unfortunately but that's just to say, expect wait times!
Service was good and servers were nice. Place was clean and organized. Food was okay- perhaps I didn't care much for our choices. Will try this place again and try other food items in the menu.
Cute little space in the plaza. Order from the app and they bring out- be careful to order from 1 mobile if there is one bill, but can order from different phones to have separate bills if needed. They can combine but can get messy if they are busy of course. Parking - shared lot, can get busy! Bathroom- looks like single occupant bathroom towards the back of kitchen. Noticed it said dogs are allowed- they are not allowed (outside of service animals) - no outdoor seating or anything. Fish quality was good! We had a variety of things- I didn't take a pic of the chirashi but it was good! The only thing I wouldn't order again is the bluefin toro uni handroll with fried bits- it tasted a little stale to me and it was served a little late as the seaweed was more on the soggy side. The downside of going when it's busy so keep that in mind~
Located in a plaza where parking can get pretty full, but if you circle around a bit you can usually find a spot. The interior decor is fun but elevated and gives the place its own personality. The servers were really nice. The highlight though: The fish here was super fresh, especially the tuna, which really stood out. Overall, the quality felt noticeably better than a lot of other sushi spots I've tried in the Bay Area. I will definitely be back :)
dry udon was not worth it. the tempura was very good and crispy. we tried the poke in the cup, it was small but yummy. I also tried the albacore tataki..it only said scallions and didn't indicate there's be fried garlic which was overpowering. the service was mediocre, had to ask for water, check, sauces, to go box. I hate when waiters wait for tip to be added and it starts at 18 percent when all they did was deliver food and not provide any service. ordering was via a QR code.
This unassuming restaurant located in a 2-story food building was a great find. We've walked passed by it before heading to the other restaurants but never chose it. It was our 2nd choice even today but that's going to change! We had the lunch specials: Salmon Teriyaki, Chicken Terriyaki, & Tonkatsu. We also decided to add-on the lunch special sides: tempura, salmon skin roll, & a California roll. For the price, it was an easy choce to makr. We didn't expect the sides to be full portions! The lunch plates came with miso soup, salad, & rice. I don't know how to describe it but the miso soup was super flavorful! It's the best I've had especially as part of a set meal. It set the tone for the rest of the dishes. The portions were generous for a lunch set meal & they were very delicious. The server was friendly, too. When we were selecting sides, he suggested that we choose three different items & told us his fave. He was right. This can be our next fave Japanese place. We may need to try the other sushi & sashimi items next time.
We stopped by after craving some sushi and found that they offered an omakase set that was pretty inexpensive. After looking at the menu, we decided to go for the nigiri premium set and the premium hand roll set. We also ordered the deep fried octopus legs! It was lightly deep fried with a tempura coating, and served with a slice of lemon for taste and this seasoned mayo sauce on the side. Upon arrival, we were luckily seated quite fast despite having 2 parties of 4 waiting for seats. Lucky us! The service was very attentive throughout the night as well. Overall, shinkai sushi is such a solid sushi place. It being so close to us, we'll most likely find ourselves here whenever we're craving sushi again. 5/5 for being to make your own hand rolls in their premium set!
Was in the area looking for dinner and a Tesla charger and sure enough, there is one nested right next to this sushi spot! We did have great sushi here, our only complaint was the table not getting bussed at all, and them not really returning. But, BUT, the sushi here was pretty damn good, especially the nigiri and even more specifically the tuna. They DO NOT play around with the amount of fish they stack on the nigiri, and all of the sushi was fresh and tasty. One thing I would avoid is the popcorn chicken / karaage. As great as the sushi was the karaage was admittedly tasteless, not even salt. This would benefit a ton from maybe some 5 spice.

first tjme ever going and went after it opened up again around 5-530. was already getting pretty packed and busy. had high hopes from the amount of people in there. wasnt really comfortable with how close the seating was but it was a small restaurant in general. they offer tea and water once you are seated and edamame is served on the house. ordered lion king, patrick star and hellboy and my boyfriend and I's favorite was the hellboy. at one point before i began eating, one of the servers bumped into my arm slightly and apologized numerous times after i said it was fine then offered free miso soup. i think that is good service even though i didnt really mind since it didnt bother me as much as he thought it did. menu is pretty small but the rolls were pretty good read more
This sushi spot was a spur of the moment find and I've since bookmarked on my Yelp account as one of my favorite Japanese restaurant. Parking: shared lot with other businesses. There are plenty of spots available. Ambiance: clean modern interior with table seating. This spot can be for a friend/family gathering and even for a date night. Service: above average. I've visited this restaurant twice and never had to wait. Order to food arrival time is reasonable and the staff usually refills our tea and water without being asked. Food: 4.5/5. This is a solid sushi spot. They don't have a huge selection of rolls but with the items they do serve, the quality is excellent. Fish is fresh and the rolls look very pretty. During our first visit, we ordered the chirashi don, a hellboy roll and the orange ocean roll. The portion size was generous and we had nothing but praises for the food we ordered. Cost: $. The establishment offers free edamame and either hot tea or water upon being seated. The prices are very affordable for the quality of food you are getting. Will I return? Definitely. read more
Had a mini Friendsgiving dinner at Shinkai Sushi last week and had some of the best sushi. We got there around 6pm on Wednesday before Thanksgiving and only had to wait 10 mins, there were 7 of us so it wasn't too bad of a wait. The food was really good! The staff were nice, the restaurant was very clean and our food came out pretty fast. There's plenty of parking here so no need to worry about that. read more

Nice small sushi atmosphere. Friendly staff. Everything we tried was fresh and delicious. They would tell us what had come it fresh that day. The tempura was a generous portion to share. The fresh sake toro and blue fin o toro melted in your mouth. The chicken kara-age was well seasoned, nicely crisp and juicy. read more

Interior was nice and service prompt. Happened to be in Dublin during the heatwave and this spot hit the spot! Service was incredibly kind, they have hot tea (free!) and ice water. The edamame they have is also free! Little things that make the experience nice. We ordered an assortment of items: - Lion King Roll - Handrolls (2) Negi Toro and Salmon - Rainbow Roll They were all delish, the wasabi they used for the handrolls were really good. Reminded me of a handroll spot I went to in NYC and that's a high praise surprised to find this in Dublin!! Had a great experience eating at Shinkai Sushi with a group of 3 on a weekend! We arrived around lunch time on a Saturday. My friend arrived before us so he already had a table for us. Service was super quick from there. They've got a lot of options on their menu along with some lunch specials and seasonal specials. My table ordered some sushi specials and omakase and they really enjoyed it. As someone who doesn't love sushi (unpopular opinion, I know), I went with their tempura udon and really enjoyed it. It was the perfect portion size and the tempura provided on the side was even enough to share. The broth was really savory and it's a great choice for a cold day. My table also ordered the sake flight and I loved how they presented it. It came with cards that showed the description of each drink along with what it pairs well with. Ambience is quaint with some nice touches. The sushi rolls, nigiri, and hand rolls are pretty great tasting. The flavors are well paired and notches above much of the competition around. Prices are also comparable. Service is friendly and well paced. Dishes ordered: Scallop hand roll with bonito gelatin- wow! Love the Umami. Minced Toro w/shiso hand roll. Korudai- snapper nigiri. Toro w/uni nigiri. Saba/mackerel grilled. I'm so happy to have found Shinkai. My new favorite! read more

Was in NorCal for a work trip and met a friend here for dinner since it was a halfway point where I was staying and where she lived. We had a reservation but it really wasn't too busy on a Monday evening at 7pm. Plenty of lot parking and in a plaza with many other shops and restaurants. Service was good, I'm not sure if it was the owner but he was super friendly and chatty. He made sure to see if we had questions about the menu and attentive to refilling our teas and water. The inside was clean and there were maybe like 12 tables. I ordered the Sashimi sampler which came with 10 pieces of assorted sashimi and we shared a plate of the Hamachi Jalapeño. The fish tasted pretty fresh. It wasn't the very best quality I've ever had but it was decent. And the price point was pretty good. Nothing super standout about this place. And I don't find myself in this area so not sure I'd go back again but maybe worth another visit if I was a local. read more
It's good for a quick meal and sushi is good for the price point, but it's not exceptional. Very friendly service and we got complimentary edamame. Table was super small, so it was a squeeze to get all the dishes on it. Tonkatsu with rice and salad was DH's fav. Breading was hot and crisp, not overly "panko", and went well with the sauce. Salad was crunchy iceberg with a sweet mayo dressing. Nice to break up the saltiness. Miso soup was kinda bland. Salmon Salmon roll was good. I'm not a huge fan of salmon skin, but it seemed fresh and portion size was good. Rainbow roll was nicely plated and also a good size. Rice was well made, just the right consistency and seasoning. Fish was fresh. Had the usuals: salmon, tuna, albacore, avocado. No shrimp or yellowtail. Salmon Nigiri was our littlest one's favorite. She devoured her piece in seconds and promptly asked for mine! Lol, I gave her half a slice. It is definitely better than the stuff in the rolls, but had the tiniest amount of musty aftertaste. Slices seemed a bit smaller than average. The restaurant got quite busy around weekend lunch time. Food came out quickly. Definitely get there early. Atmosphere is casual, trendy, and they had a big TV with the NBA game on. Overall, good place if you happen to be around for a quick meal. If you're a serious sushi snob, it's not worth the drive. read more

My daughter and I were looking for a good omakase to celebrate her birthday and little did we know we had one close by. I thought we would have to go to SF or SJ but when I searched online, Shinkai came up. So we tried it out and we're so happily surprised at the quality of the sashimi, nigiri and the portions that we knew we found out new "go to" for sushi in the tri-valley. The restaurant is small but there are many tables and ample free parking. The Ulferts center in Dublin has such a nice selection of restaurants and Shinkai is a gem here. They have two omakase sets and a sake flight that are such good deals. It's a great place for a casual dining experience and many families come here also. They even have black sesame ice cream! Give this place a try if you haven't already.... It can get busy but the food quality is worth the wait! read more
4.28 stars Shinkai Sushi is placed on the ground floor of this plaza. Lots of parking (but definitely looks like it could get really packed!) Staff are super friendly, food comes out fairly quickly and most importantly the fish is pretty fresh! The only downside is that most of the rolls were Salmon. Not many tuna options :/ read more
Got the sashimi sampler and the salmon salmon role. Total came out to be ~$50 but way too pricey. Quality of the fish is not there. Flavors of the salmon roll are good but not enough to justify $18. Seems to be busy on the weekday evenings. You'd probably have to order $70-80 worth of food to fill 2 people. Interior is clean. read more
Service here is impeccable! They are super sweet and always checking in on us for more tea or water. By the way, hot tea here is FREE! Glad our server told us when we asked for water (cuz some places be charging $4 for tea????). Once seated, they bring edamame (free) I got the prime set $34 which came with 9 nigiri's and 6 rolls (unagi & avocado). Pretty good deal I would say. My friend got the tonkatsu plate and a salon skin hand roll. The tonkatsu plate is considered as an entree so it came with soup. Pretty good deal. I will be back!! read more

I actually forgot that I have previously been here before as it's been years. From my understanding is that they are under new management or they went under some sort of change and that the menu is a little different. There are still lots of options and the food is still pretty good. We got a few rolls, tempura, and a bento box. One thing that caught my eye was their sake flight, although I didn't try it this time, I definitely want to come back and try it next time. read more

Fabulous little spot located in Ulferts Center!! It is a small restaurant, but super cozy (in a good way). The rustic wood top tables and adorable soy sauce bottles and dishes are too cute. The food is very good; traditional menu. Complimentary edamame and tea. We had: Spicy tuna rolls Lion King Roll California Roll Japanese Fried Tofu Chicken Teriyaki Matcha cheesecake (I don't see this on the menu) but they gifted us with a slice and sang happy birthday to my daughter. The servers are very friendly; and gracious. My youngest requested we go there more often. Price wise - the check was about 1/2 what I pay at our other favorite Japanese restaurant in Dublin, but I still love that other spot too! I absolutely recommend Shinkai! read more
Long story short, this is a must try for dublin. I haven't had sushi for weeks now and I am glad to report that this small, but friendly restaurant made my day. Fish is fresh, the entrees are great, making the price worth it for sure. The tempura, thank the lord, is one of the best I had in awhile and they're generous with the amount for sure. The rolls overall are satisfactory. The fish is fresh and they're made simple, nothing too complicated. I love the orange ocean roll the most, I for one love some citrus when it comes to salmon. The service is good, but you must ask whenever you want something, whether its water or any other thing. Don't wanna disclose too much, but if you are craving for a bigger meal and some more than decent sushi, this is the place to go. read more

Food is good but not spectacular. The hellboy roll was the best roll of the night. It was spicy and had the perfect amount of kick. Had a decent size of eel ontop. Could have put more fatty tuna in the middle because 3/4 was avocado. The orange Ocean roll was also good but not memorable. Complimentary edamame was great and unexpected so it added to the overall expwrience. Pricing is a bit more on the expensive side. Service was great and attentive. Love the ambiance and their logo is super creative. Solid place. read more

First time and it did not disappoint! We ordered the omakase, uni nigiri, and salmon skin roll+agedashi tofu(sauce lil too sweet but crispy) We even ordered second round of omakase! Great service! Def coming back again. read more
Food & service was a 10/10! Called on Friday evening to make a reservation for 8 on the following Saturday @ 12:30. They were able to make our reservation with no problem. We arrived around 12:20 on Saturday & were seated immediately. The menu wasn't long, which I prefer because a long menu can get overwhelming. I ordered the orange ocean roll & the dragon roll - both 10/10. Very filling & flavorful. They also have a lunch menu, which I am surprised about because most places have a lunch menu that is only for Mondays-Fridays. Great place & staff was very friendly! read more

We were warmly greeted and served by Jack. He said he was "just a worker," but he was definitely a humble manager/owner. He was fast, quick-witted, and dedicated. My tuna belly and uni special was fresh and succulent. The tuna belly was lightly seared and so big that it slightly overpowered the uni. No complaints about big, tender tuna belly though! There were two pieces, so with the second piece, I savored the uni separately. So creamy, fresh, and wonderfully sweet. It was my Dad's favorite - I used to watch him eat sea urchins straight out of their spiny shells. He called it "ono" and ever since trying it in Hawaii (with pasta), I fully agree. I was too scared to try them when I was a kid, but dang I was missing out all those years! My generous sister shared some of her Kake Udon soup. Delicious broth full of umami with mushrooms, bonito flakes, seaweed and green onions. The noodles were perfectly tender. Our mom also loved her Tempura Udon. My son said his Chicken Katsu was the best he's tried. He gave me a couple slices and they were amazingly tender and delicately crispy. The dipping sauce was savory, sweet, and tangy. We also shared edamame, Chicken kara-age, California Rolls, a Dragon Roll, and Shrimp Tempura rolls. All great and fairly priced too. Even the house salad was excellent - so crunchy and fresh! Love that my son appreciated and recognized this food as art. We will definitely come back! read more

The food here is delicious, made fresh and nicely portioned! Let me tell you, my favorite item here was probably the Japanese Tofu (agedashi tofu)!! It's not soaking in the sauce like most places. There's a nice drizzle on each tofu, and trust me. The sauce is flavorful and enough for each tofu. Each piece is evenly fried and crispy while the inside is still soft and smooth. So yummy!!! Tempura is also nicely deep fried. Omakase is fresh. Yum all around. The employees were all very nice and friendly and although there was a slight wait for our food, they were very apologetic and kind. It was busy! But this definitely will be my go to sushi spot in Dublin! read more
Wait: Fairly short wait time for the amount of people standing outside and in the waiting area. We waited 15 mins for a party of 2 on a Friday evening (dinner rush around 7pm). Food: 4.5 Portion was well deserving of the price point. The ratio of rice to fish was also perfect. The quality and of the fish is fresh, which is also a plus. Everything was delicious. I would highly recommend the o-toro nigiri, sake flight, and 20 piece sashimi. Service: 4.0 Customer service is really attentive when it comes to refills for water and removing plates. The only thing that was miscommunicated was that they ran out of a nigiri that was ordered at the beginning of our meal. Other than that minor mishap, Service was great--quick and friendly. Overall, would definitely come back to try more items on the menu like the Omakase :) read more

This restaurant is a gem. Greeted promptly by the server and then he noticed our table was not balanced so quickly fixed the issue. We opted to go with the lunch menu and a huge surprise on the portions of the salmon plate and tempura don (tempura over rice). I have never been able to find a restrauant that served tempura don anywhere so was so happy to discover this place. We will definitely go to this one again. read more

I think this is my second visit and it has been a while the initial one. I thought they offered fried oysters but was informed they have fresh raw ones. So I ordered a pair and the chicken katsu lunch special that included miso soup, salad, and edamame. The soup and edamame arrived first. The edamame was nicely salted. And the miso soup was refreshing, warm with seaweed and tiny bits of tofu. Afterwards, the chicken katsu was delivered. Salad at a Japanese restaurant with their special dressing always delights me. The chicken katsu was warm, crispy and moist. Dipped in the tonkatsu sauce made each bite inviting. Later the oysters were brought to my table. They tasted fresh with a splash of lemon and wasabi. Despite being disappointed with not having fried oysters, it was a healthy choice. All in all, it was a pleasant dining experience. And the service was friendly and attentive. read more

They are currently having a soft opening up until December 1st! We decided to check out this place since it has been recently opened -- clean, welcoming ambiance. I enjoyed the little details from their menus, soy sauce cups, and seat cushions on the wooden bench. Service was awesome as they were attentive and the food came out fairly fast. Chicken Karaage - Crispy, tender, juicy. It came with spicy mayo on the side, but I wish they offered another sauce that would complement it better. Cali Roll/Nigiri Combo - My favorite! Great price from the lunch menu. Classic California roll. Their Nigiri's were fantastic and size was on the larger scale. Fresh and flavorful. Orange Ocean - Salmon, Shrimp Tempura, Avocado, Tobiko, Citrus Zest. The Zest was very faint but I loved the shrimp tempura. It was crispy. I felt like the roll was missing crab on the inside though. Overall, I would definitely come back again! We talked to the staff and they are still having an event going on until December. Free Ice cream and Edamame with every dine-in. If you review on yelp then it'll be a free chicken karaage or beer. Wishing this restaurant great success in all its endeavors. read more
