Like any good ol' Korean sushi place, they lay out the head of the halibut to show how fresh it is (i.e., the gills and mouth will squiggle from time to time). The food is above-average, the service is on a par with most Korean restaurants in Chicago (i.e., it's average at best) and the price tag is on a par with most Korean sushi places in Korea (i.e., it's dear). But given that Korean style sushi is non-existent in Chicago proper and a rarity in the greater Chicago metro area, it's only a matter of time until my next visit. read more

I love sushi and have been to almost every sushi place around. There is no place like Shiroi Sushi! First of all, Steve, Carol, and Dave (owners) are amazingly sweet. The second you open that door and before your foot touches the ground, they all greet you by your first name. I first thought it was just my husband and I since we have been going there for so long. Two weeks ago we invited some friends to join us and introduced them to the owners. This past Friday my husband and I had lunch there and both Carol and Steve asked about our friends referring to them by their first name. Such sweet and accommodating people. You never have to ask for anything. Secondly, their sushi is so fresh, I feel like they go fishing just before serving it. I have never had a bad or fishy tasting piece of sushi. Its better than the "high end" sushi restaurants downtown or even Sushi 21 just down the street. I'm surprised Sushi 21 is still in business. That place is disgusting and Sushi Samba or Japonais has nothing on Shiroi either. Last but not least, their prices are amazingly decent for the fine quality of food they serve. A couple can enjoy a satisfying and great tasting dinner for $30-$40 (especially the way my husband eats). Now they even have great lunch specials. You can have a full lunch meal for under $6 with their dollar "Hot Sake" specials! I can go on and on about how much I love this place. But you must try it to fully understand where I'm coming from. Shiroi has the most amazing Sushi. They have all the classic maki that is so delicious and they also have new maki's that they put together experimenting with new and classic flavors. All the food is amazing ranging from salads to Teriyaki boxes. It all comes together with the great service. This is a family owned restaurant and it shows. The family is very nice and always greet you once you walk in. The service is great and the feel of the restaurant is just welcoming yet classy. All in all, this my place to go for sushi. I went from the simpler things, such as the crabstick over rice and calling it bona fide sushi, chicken teriyaki, but I never quite left them, either. I don't much care for the supremely complicated dishes. Sushi to me is like insalata caprese: only the direct sum of its parts. I tired of my local Kamehachi; as I got older, something felt plain, especially as I frequented other restaurants. Everyone had their own little angle on this or that, but for the most part, so much tasted the same. Come around fifth grade, my mother and I decided to stop into Shiroi, a quaint little place right across from Golf Mill in a dingy little strip mall, owned by a kind and gracious Korean family. At the time, I finally felt I was ready to handle the spice of a spicy tuna roll, among other things. On the plate in front of me--and it hasn't changed since, not in appearance, at least--were several rolls with what seemed like orange-red slop packed into little sushi rolls, tiny specks of something so complicated popping out of the sauce in it. Confused, I popped one in my mouth, and I was pleasantly surprised. Smooth, fresh, spicy, and yet it seemed that they put their own Korean twist on the flavor, and I'm not a foodie, so it's difficult to describe, but it's like the oil was something they made themselves, and no one can ever seem to emulate this recipe. It seems to me that the Japanese like their food simple, and I have no idea what they did to such a simple staple of American sushi, but even now, ten years later, I routinely stuff my gob with this stuff on at least a weekly basis. It's a bit pricy, but it is sushi, after all. The spicy tuna roll never ceases to impress me, but neither does the other stuff. The bulgogi, cooked and served to savory perfection, miso soup with just the right amount of salt and flavor in it, austere and not like plastic, and no matter what I order, I always seem to be given tiny dishes of this or that, whether it be edamame, kimchi, or a potato croquette which tastes more like a gourmet treat and treasure than any old hashbrown. My mother likes the sashimi and seaweed cocktails, especially when she is fading into caring about her figure more than she usually does. I'm always greeted with smiles and handshakes there, dining in or taking out, though it doesn't matter, since the service is always quick and professional. The charcoal and white color scheme is nice and clean on the inside, yet it manages to stay intimate and loud at the same time, and it's not as though it's a sterile place--there's always a little dirt at the front door from their transient goers. Their menu is massive, and while I haven't tired everything on it, I know that no matter what I order, they'll make it well, and they always cater to my requests, no matter how specific or annoying they are. I always order my spicy tunas without cucumber, and I've never had a problem. Lame example, but it's relevant. They care about their customers. At lunch or at dinner, when I rush in just before closing, the Wangs turn away from themselves and at me, like I'm their long lost best friend. Of course, I'm not special. This place has many regular, and they do the same thing with so many customers, but not once did it ever feel forced or phony or artificial. They care about their craft and their customers, and while this place may not have the largest budget for the world's best whatever-you-want-to-call it like Jiro's place, but every corner of this place, the owners, the food, the ambience, all of it, has the largest heart. Grreeeaaatttt! I used to drive past this place all the time but not anymore!! Looks like a random hole in the wall but I was super happy with my experience here! Ambiance: Nice and comfy place! Everyone is very friendly! I believe it's family owned because our server was so delighted to hear that we were first time customers and made us a complimentary appetizer. Food: Huge variety of appetizers and maki rolls! My fiance and I ordered for appetizers an edamame and chicken and veggie skewers both were good, both came out hot and edamame was super flavorful (especially for something so simple). For dinner we ordered a few maki rolls and a godzilla specialty roll. All was very fresh and a good size especially for the price. I will say though that they did not have a huge variety of specialty rolls which would have made me give them 4 stars...BUT when David came back to see how our food was going I told his that everything was wonderful but I had mentioned that I wish that they had more of a selection of special rolls and he asked me what kind of things that we would like in a roll and he went to the sushi bar himself and made us a perfectly delicious personalized specialty roll!!! A small family owned place with friendly service, they have been consistently serving fresh, top-notch sushi and other seafood/Japanese cuisine during my visits, and I am told for the past 20 years! Highly recommended. As almost all Japanese cuisine is, prices may be a little heavy - I have not found sushi as good as they serve up here at lower prices anywhere in the Midwest, let alone Chicago. read more

My first and last visit. Owners are not cordial... maybe to repeat customers. I've had sushi all across america and never have I had wasabi put in the nigiri. When I asked about why there's wasabi in there... they said "no one has ever complained." I've work in one of the highest grossing restaurants in America that also serves sushi/nigiri. I really wanted to rant in detail about why I didn't like this place but think I'll save the energy on something more positive. I also have no idea how this place has so many stars... its a lie. Our waitress was very kind and always had a smile talking us, she was extremely helpful! First time I went to Shiroi the staff refused to seat us anywhere away from the door although it was freezing cold. The restaurant was empty but the staff insisted a large party was scheduled to show up shortly. I ordered food regardless and the rolls were good although the party never showed after 1.5 hours. I came back a second time after more than 3 months to give the restaurant a second go round...and asked to order food to go. The server told me it would be 40 plus minutes due to the 4 tables that were seated at the time out of 20 plus open ones. The server indicated they probably wouldn't be able to serve me. Although I am not normally one to pull the race card. I can't help but wonder if it has something to do with the service I have received. Most patrons are Asian. I am terribly disappointed in the customer service of this restaurant. The food wasn't enough to make up for the lack of service. read more

Absolutely terrible service. Ordered take out, when I came to pick up, I verbally conformed with the hostess the content of the order. When I got home there was a mistake. Went again with customers from Korea. The aggressive behavior of waitress is bad. Maybe a young waitstaff with smiles on the faces of them rather than a person who seems to be a fish out of water. I always drove by this restaurant for many years. I finally decided to give it a try with my wife and friend. We ordered the dinner combo for 2 and I was pleasantly surprised. It started out with a soup and salad and then came out the biggest and freshest pieces of sashimi and rolls. It did not just stop there. Out came next was a salmon's head yes the head of a massive salmon. At first I was hesitant but then when I took a bite I was in love. It was grilled and marinated to perfection, I found my new favorite dish! At that point we were not stuffed but good. Where can you be satisfied for 3 at a Japanese restaurant for just around 60 bucks! When we thought all the food was out then another dish came out. My husband I just went for the first time and had a great time. Just for the record, in regards to other yelp posts, we are not Asian and we were treated wonderfully. The owner and his wife could not have been more gracious or generous. The food was delicious, the best dragon roll I have ever had. The salads were fresh and bright and sashimi was excellent. I just went there yesterday. I really enjoyed the food. Everything so fresh and tasty. The service was a little to much in the beginning - they kept coming and asking for our order before we were able to finish the menu list. We were there for dinner and they gave us the lunch menus. But it is just picking on my side. The sushi was great. I had the spider roll and some Ikura and my friend ordered Godzilla. Both really tasty. Yum, yum. The tea was delicious but could be a little warmer. I am planning my next visit soon. read more

I have been in too many expensive places and never had as tasty and big rolls as here. I've been going here for years and eaten so many times I can't even count so I don't understand the reviews about the fish not being fresh since I never got sick from eating the raw seafood here even my kids never had problem since they're a lot more sensitive than me. The place it's not dirty ,just not fancy that's all. The owner's are so sweet. If you want ambiance and fancy sushi place this is not it, it's just a warm neighborhood place with tasty food. Their unagi is the best I've ever had and I love their scallop tartar salad which is spicy too and the takaki tuna or salmon. Their seafood tastes literally like it came out from the sea at the moment. I don't understand the negative reviews, maybe they are from the competition around because I go there all the time and never had a problem that even if my husband asks me to go to fancy sushi places in downtown I pass, I'd rather have my sushi here and go for other food downtown... read more
