Went to lunch with my wife here. I had the ground beef kabob gyro sandwhich and she got a customized falafel plate with grilled veggies on the side. We both expected to have some grilled onions and tomatoes on her plate but it was just squash - let down there. I got a side of fries (steak cut) which were excellent - crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. It's all about the right oil temperature and frying enough time. The falafels were also very good - next time I should just get a falafel gyro. My beef kabob sandwich was good but not 4-star good. I ordered it spicy but it didn't have much kick. Though I've been coming to Katy for quite a few years now, I've never really eaten in the area. Now that I work in this area though, I find myself venturing out more and more to the local eateries instead of the big name places like Panera Bread, Panda Express, etc. Anyways, I've noticed A LOT of local joints around here and my goal is to try each and everyone of them (refer to my review on Kimchi's Cafe). Yesterday for lunch, a coworker of mine and I decided to try Shish Kabobs after I read reviews here on Yelp. Have seen it there in the Target shopping center for years but have never tried it. I believe they got lucky with me yesterday because 1.) I was starving after a 4 hour meeting and 2.) I was craving Mediterranean food because boy was it delicious! I had the Koobideh Kabob Combo which comes with two skewers of ground beef kabob and it's served with a heaping portion of Persian rice and grilled tomatoes. There's so much food for under 10 bucks in that Combo, I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem if two people shared it. In fact, my coworker was able to take the rest of my rice home with her Gyro meat and Chicken combo. The beef kabob was a bit dry, but so flavorful you looked past the dryness of it, and the Persian rice was soft and fluffy but not too dry and the tomatoes were sour and grilled perfectly. My coworker got the Chicken and Lamb Gyro platter, which was also a huge enough portion to serve two. Her dish was also pretty dry, but I don't doubt that if it was fresh it would have been very good. Does that even make sense? ha! We went during lunch hour, and the place wasn't over crowded, but it was a steady crowd. They have a small table outside for those that want to eat al fresco. Shish Kabob has been a longtime favorite of my family. I have been coming here since I was born. Through all the years that I have been coming here, I can think of one dish in particular that I love and will always come back to, the Lamb Shank. It's simple really. Just a lamb shank simmered in a special sauce served with a generous amount of basmati rice. Never, in all of my exploration of restaurants have found a lamb shank quite as good as the one offered at Shish Kabob. The meat is tender and is often quite literally falling off the bone! The soup/sauce served with it goes well with rice and pita. Another dish on the Shish Kabob menu that has not been surpassed by any restaurant I have been to is their hummus. I don't know what it is about their hummus, but I have never tried anything like it before. This hummus is much more liquid in consistency (which may turn some off) but for me, this was the hummus I had been waiting for (and only discovered when I was six-years-old!) The fine garlic undertones can be tasted throughout the hummus and goes nicely with some pita bread. Even after not going back to the restaurant for quite some time, I still feel at home at this restaurant. The owners of this restaurant know their customers. I am always greeted with friendly faces and sometimes even hugs when I come in. I know for a fact this is true for many customers as I see it happen while I'm eating. I tried this place last night and it's just Ok. The service was pretty quick and quite friendly. Of course, there were only two people eating at the restaurant at the time, so I'd expect that type of service. As for the food, I jumped on the Beef-Chicken Kabob combo. It was about 15.00 and it was one of each over a bed of rice. It says it comes with tomato, onion, and bell pepper. Yea, there was a half of a small tomato, a sliver of onion and a sliver of one green pepper. The vegetables are more like an after-thought than part of the meal and I love grilled veggies on my kabob. Now there is no complaint about the amount of meat present. They definitely load you up. The beef was good, cooked as I asked, but fatty. The chicken was good and very tender. I asked for spicy and it just looked like they sprinkled some type of chili powder/cayenne mix on top. That just left one side of my kabob spicy and the other side, just plain. The bed of rice it comes on is pretty good and plentiful. Is this the best I've had? No, not hardly, but I realize that there are different recipes from different areas of the world that go into "Mediterranean Dishes". I hate to rate the place this low because the owner is a really nice guy (came here fro Iran in 1976) and the service was quick and cheerful. When I asked for some extra onion beyond what was brought out, it was done quickly as well. But I come for the food. And here's the tough part. The ingredients seemed decent. I ordered the beef soltani plate and a baklava. The beef was cooked just how I asked (medium rare) and the ground beef portion was a nice medium. There was a generous portion of rice as well. So what was the problem? Everything, and I mean, everything was soaked in lemon juice. And I don't mean a slight flavoring of it. I mean that it tasted like lemon. The beef kebabs are supposed to taste like seasoned, grilled beef. That was not the case. The saffron rice is supposed to have a subtle flavor, but that was also not the case. Everything tasted like lemon. The baklava did not taste like lemon, but it was just okay. I have had many, many better ones. Like I said, I really hated to rate the place this low because the service was good (you order at the front counter and they bring it to you), the people were friendly and accommodating, and the ingredients seemed to be of a decent quality, with ample portions. This is the 4th kabob restaurant that I've tried in the Katy Area...and is now my favorite! The food was far better than any of the other three restaurants. I tried the ground beef kabob and chicken shish kabob combo plate. Both kabobs were flavorful, moist, and delicious! Served over a large bed of rice that was also quite flavorful. The hummus is delicious, with a strong garlic flavor. Tasted lemon throughout all dishes. Well seasoned, prepared quickly, and everything was delicious. My family and I eat here at least once a week! The inside is comfortable and homey. The owner is friendly and knows us by name and order. Everything is good here. The hummus is absolutely phenomenal, I could drink it by itself. I always get the chicken and lamb plate (extra spicy) and never once has it been bad. the chicken and lamb are always cooked perfectly. Ok so this place is actually called Shish Kabob Cafe II. Hopefully Yelp HQ will correct that now that I've sent them a little message. This is the sister restaurant to the Shish Kabob Cafe at Highway 6 and Westheimer. Newer, larger, and snazzier - this place is a winner! It's located in a bustling Target shopping center and had a great crowd today at lunch. The décor is definitely nicer here than at the original location, with pretty rugs, Persian art, and dark wooden tables and chairs. The food is amazing here as well, and one of the owners is normally on site being friendly and welcoming as usual. The hubby and I still stick with the basics, although I must try the chicken schwarma after reading Christina B's review of the Highway 6 location. We shared a perfect order of hummus today and I can still taste it. It is honestly the best hummus I've ever eaten, and the pillowy soft pita bread makes it that much better. It's just so full of garlicky, spicy flavor, which is a delight in this city of bland chickpeas. My lamb gyro was also excellent today. Cooked 'spicy' it was well seasoned and juicy, with a generous helping of Tzatziki sauce. Fresh veggies add crunch, and a little extra hummus drizzled on top (it doesn't come this way, but I add it at the table) takes it to another level. The gyros are quite large and after eating hummus I can typically only eat about half of one. I always leave Shish Kabob completely full and content, and knowing that I still have half a gyro in the fridge will keep me smiling all afternoon. My comparison comes from the gyro's I have had in restaurants in Israel and Europe; also from Bibas and Ones a Meal. In the game of mediterranean/persian food you really need to be one of the top dogs to make it around this town. Especially in Katy where there are as many restaurants as there are people. You have to differentiate your food from the rest. Otherwise it wont last. Unfortunately, Shish Kabob Cafe has not really done that. Don't get me wrong. The gyro plate they offer is good. The lamb is tasty and the hot sauce they offer adds a bit of needed flavor. Where they lack is the more traditional fillings, rice, and surprisingly the hummus. The tzaziki sauce looks like a foamy tooth paste that really doesnt have much taste. The lettuce and tomato fillings are just your average fillings. My wife can't stand this place, but I like it. They serve large amounts of food and, though not traditional, their hummus is good. They use a lot less tahini, making it thinner. The guy, which I think is the owner greeted me with a smile asked him since this is my first time here what he can recommend me to have. He asked me if I like chicken or beef, which I wanted both so he recommended me the Chicken Soltani (combo) chicken & beef. It was good~! I like it a lot! It was very flavorful and the rice was fluffy hot good! The service was good too and he was singing happily while cooking too which I thought its good for him that he's happy making my food. Ok so I didn't know what to expect seeing as though on the outside it's dark and appears small. Don't let that fool you. When I walked in I was greeted by the owner, a very friendly man. He was nice. I placed my order which was the kabob combo and an order of grape leaves. The grape leaves arrived quickly and soon I was into my meal. The grape leaves were good and had a nice lemon garlic sauce on them. I must admit after the quick arrival of the grape leaves, I expected my food to arrive quick. That did not happen as I'm waiting I read a sign that says all food is made fresh and daily and cooked fresh. So i had high hopes. Usually when a place cooks fresh to order it is not a disappointment. Guess what...I was NOT disappointed. The food was awesome. Super flavorful. One bite and I was in heaven. The meat was juicy and not dry. Everything was hot not warm. And the spice...what can I say it was on point. Obviously I enjoyed the meal normally I wait to write a review but not this time. I was in the neighborhood and started Yelping to see what was around for lunch. Ah, a 4.5 star Mediterranean cafe. Sounds great. Only 2 reviews was a bit of a flag, but I decided to try it anyway. For Mediterranean fare, it was on the low side of acceptable. I got the gyro and chicken breast combo, which included the raved-about-hummus. I did order it spicy and found that was a pleasant addition to the flavor for what was otherwise a fairly generic meal. I was disappointed in that the chicken and gyro meat both were over done for my palate (think: crunchy). The famous hummus had the consistency of a thick soup; personally I like to eat it with a fork rather than a spoon. There was garlic in it. And I did get the pickle slices that other reviewers mentioned. I'm not sure what was on the top of the meat; it was kind of like tzatziki but tasted odd and looked like toothpaste. It's not fancy, but sometimes I need some variation from the suburban chain restaurants. I love their lamb kabob and saffron rice. It's a convenient pick up place for when I visit family on Katy. Let me add that now that I don't live near them, I miss this place even more. Especially their rice with the barberries. I love this place! The food is so great We discovered this place about a week ago and have already gone back back a few more times. I always get the veggie plate which comes with the Persian rice, eggplant type sauce, hummus, & 3 dolmas topped with a yogurt sauce with a pita. Everything on the plate has such great flavor and tastes fresh and home made! The only thing I feel that could improve is the atmosphere. I've been eating at Shish Kabob for about 20 years when they only had the Hwy 6 location. My family comes here at least once a week and sometimes as often as 3x! The hummus was my sons first food and it's still where I take him when he isn't feeling well as I know it's one place he will always wolf down a meal. The owner is wonderful and knows us well.... And can always remember our exact orders. Has a little nickname for my little man and brings us Tah Dig for the table every visit. The hummus is the best I've ever had... Different from many others but loaded with spicy garlic and flavor. I'm a junkie for the chicken kabobs with the rice.... Both are always HOT and fresh and so so flavorful. My mom prefers to order a side of grilled vegetables with her kabobs... My dad likes the Greek salad. The Tah dig is crispy and delicious. And my husband always gets tons of leftovers out of it as the portions are very generous! I brought a Lebanese friend who said the gyro lamb was some of the best and most authentic he's had here. It was A-OK - *just* A-OK. Chicken skewer and beef skewer were both pretty good, as was the rice, but I didn't find it as spectacularly delicious as others seem to. I thought it was kind of amusing that I asked for a receipt, was told I'd get it with the meal, and never did get it, when there was a sign by the register that if you didn't get a receipt you got free food or something. About 7 years ago I lived around the corner from this little gem and used to come for dinner after the gym. Now that I work in the area I was surprised to see it was still open so a co-worker and I went in for lunch and guess what? It's still amazing food! Same quality, same portion sizes, same friendliness and I believe very close to the same prices. We ordered the lamb plate, the beef plate and hummus. All perfectly delicious and cooked to order! It did take a couple of minutes for them to notice we had arrived (seemed like just 1 mobile waitress and then the male "owner" (seems like the owner) were working on this Monday evening. I got the Beef Filet kabob, which tasted fantastic. Tried the hummus, which was decent but not great. my wife liked her chicken shwarma sandwich, and my father really enjoyed his lamb platter. One thing that was a semi-negative aspect was that there are only styrofoam plates and plastic ware around, and apparently you're supposed to go get it on your own from the central area where the soda machine is. For a first timer, I was a little lost as to how to order. They have some really nice selection of dishes. I did like the kebabs I had and the yogurt drink is really really good. Its not something that most people would like but if you do, it was a great drink. This place was mostly self service when I was there and the food was picked up at the counter when ready.
