I ordered the combination of New York strip & chicken. You can choose a soup or salad. Included noodles, veggies, and rice. $28. Appetizers are additional cost. They had happy hour items as well. Omg, this past visit was one of the BEST we have had in many, many years!! We came for Father's Day and had Chris as our chef. My husband and I thought he looked familiar, well we had him at Benihana in MV for his bday last Oct! Well, Chris delivered! Was fun and a great chef! I love that in addition to the filet and scallops I ordered, we also got noodles and potatoes with the veggies. The sides got a definite upgrade and it hits! We went to celebrate a family member's birthday at Shogun. We totally enjoyed our chef Chris, he was awesome! He can cook/grill and entertain. What a great show he put on! Wow. And not in a good way. We arrived at 2 minutes after six (6pm was the reservation) and we had received a text from our host asking where we were as the restaurant was rushing them. We got in the lobby and there were the seven of us and two other people and the host literally yells our name even though we were right there. It was not pleasant. We were told we were being seated at the new tables and after a short walk we were seated in what looked like a construction zone. Paper and tape everywhere and two of the hot tables didn't even have vents so steam and cooking smells were everywhere. In fact we all a smelled of food when we left. Not great. The place was also very tight. People had to constantly move not to be hit by severs going by or other guests moving about.. the room is too small for the over 50 guests they had. There was only one small wall mounted ac unit so it was also hot. The servers seemed overwhelmed and this addition or remodel or whatever stil had them confused as to how to best operate. They tried but service was uneven at best. Some people got cloth namkis some got paper. Food was literslly dropped in front of us with no care at all. It was rushed and uncomfortable. The chef came out and he was wearing a mask. Basicslly no one could hear anything he said and we all wondered if he was sick. The show was very good and the food was also very good. It did not, however, make up for the bad service or, the heat, the smell, the unfinished room and the over all feeling of being very cramped. Came back here for a birthday and was impressed enough to write another review. Our chef this time was so much more friendly and charismatic, and they've added noodles (although it's just linguine) and more vegetables (broccoli, yellow bell peppers, and potatoes) to the entree so that you have better variety. My fried rice this time was not completely soaking in oil, and my medium rare filet mignon was so tender and buttery. Definitely recommend getting. The miso soup appetizer is fine but the mushrooms are just a step from raw, so much so that they taste dry in your mouth despite being in soup. Every staff member from hostess to bus to wait staff, chefs, and managers moved very quickly to meet every customer's needs. They seemed to all help each other out as well if someone forgot something. We ordered the New York Strip and Shrimp combination. We haven't visited in a while and the menu had changed a bit. They added noodles and broccoli and potatoes in addition to their soup, salad, and steamed rice. Fried rice costs extra. I have not been to Shogun in a long time but decided this would be a fun place for a family celebration lunch. The place was full of holiday parties and a 1 + hour wait for lunch so we decided to sit in the dining room. Big mistake! Our food took over an hour to get, items were cold, lukewarm , or completely forgotten. Chicken was forgotten and then when it came it was dry and over seasoned. The yakisoba came with the combo meals, so one child not only didn't get his mean until 30 + minutes after the rest of us he could have had noodles with a combo plate. Same flavor - only his came out hot and very late. The tables sounded like they were having fun but we were miserable in the dining room. Miso soup was lukewarm along with our combination plates. My filet was cooked perfectly it was just lukewarm as well. If the prices are the same for the tables and the experience make the food just as good. The Teppan tables the food is served right away and hot. So we had mediocre food without the show. The staff apologized it it ruined the celebration. read more

Came with my family after a beach trip and not being from the area, we were just trying to find someplace to eat quick. They told us they could seat us fairly quickly which was promising as we had a large party of 19. We waited about 10 minutes for them to prep the table as they did not have a regular table that could house that amount, so they used the teppanyaki tables. Some of my party ordered the sushi and a few the teppanyaki options. After ordering, we probably waited about 30 minutes for our food to come out and it came in batches so some of our party waited until everyone got their food to eat. Maybe it was due to waiting for a chef to cook the teppanyaki options, but it was rather frustrating that this was not communicated. Our server Micah was super friendly and attentive. He checked on us for refills and checked on things for us. It feels like the restaurant should have had another server, runner, or even manager to help him out as even his other tables in this section weren't cleaned. One other person helped bring out waters for everyone but Micah did it all themself. The food was good, nothing special that would have you come back. But if it wasn't for Micah trying their best, I feel like it would have been a 1 star experience. read more

I think it's well fairly known that "Teppanyaki" is a French word that means "someone you love asked to go there for dinner because it's their birthday and you have to pick between Shogun and Benihana because you live in San Diego." Shōgun it is, friends. I appreciate that when I arrive at Shōgun, I'm not treated like I have personally offended the host just by existing (a staple of the Benihana experience). Quite the opposite. Great experience and prompt seating. As for the dining experience. Look, we all know you're here for the show (or because someone you love just got older by a year). The show is good. The chef is funny. The food is good. The server is attentive. Attentive ... this brings me to my point. In our case, mom wanted a jar of the salad dressing. Our server made that happen. Sure, it was for a reasonable charge. But I loved how it was prepared and presented like contraband. Just a random jar of dressing, moonshine style. No label. I'm not kidding by the way. I'm here for it. When mom makes a random request like that on her birthday and they deliver? Sign me up. They even gave her a paper hat. This is all to say this style of dining is about more than food. It's about making people feel special. Unfortunately Disappointing Around 5pm I used the website to place a reservation but the only times they had available were after 8. I called and spoke to Ayden and asked if I absolutely needed a reservation or if I could walk in as I have a young daughter I hoped to eat earlier than 8pm Ayden informed me I didn't need a reservation but I wouldn't be seated until 8 if I walked in at 6. This was disappointing and a bit confusing to me but I kept my reservation for 8 and arrived on time ready and excited to eat. Parking was fairly simple they have accessible handicap parking a few feet from the entrance. We were sat around 8:05 order at 8:15. It was pretty busy- full of birthday celebrations and people at most tables. We watched everyone around us meet their chefs and enjoy their show. We all sat over an HOUR before our chef/cook arrived to begin cooking. A very hangry child, my older hungry mother and myself waiting with watered down drinks was Not fun. I am still extremely unsure why we made a reservation and did not begin eating until after 930! The chefs at the other tables were full of excitement and created a great show. Everyone at our table kept saying "this food and show much be exceptional to have us waiting this long" It was mediocre at best. Chef did not interact with us, barely made eye contact and did not do any cool tricks while cooking as others did. If I knew I wouldn't eat until close to 10pm there is no way I would've made the reservation or decided to come to this restaurant. I ordered hibachi scallops that tasted undercooked or maybe just not fresh. Regardless ,I would not recommend coming here unless it's during a slow lunch time. Don't come hungry unless you're okay with waiting hours to eat and definitely don't bring kids that are ready to eat. We went on a Sunday night with reservations at 7:30. Parking was rough, but we found spots for our group of four. We were greeted quickly and waited for our table. We let them know we were going to a comedy show next door and needed to be done by 8:30, they said it should not be an issue. About 7:30 we were added to a table with a couple who had reservations at 7. They were regulars, but were not treated as such. About 7:45 the last two were added. The waiter came by about 7:50 and we ordered sushi due to the time constraint. At 8, the couple that came last left, likely as they did not want to wait and the chef at the Teppanyaki grill had yet to show up. We ordered a roll and a salad with sashimi. The sushi rolls our friends ordered came around 8:10 and salad arrived around 8:15. We ate quickly again as we had a comedy show to attend. Around 8:20 the Teppanyaki grill chef came. We asked about our roll that never came and decided to just pay the bill for what we got as the server forgot to put the order in. Came here for my boyfriend's birthday and had such a great experience. They were more than accommodating with dietary needs and made everything easy for us. We also had the best cook. He was entertaining, friendly, and made the whole dinner fun. We got lucky and were only seated with one other couple, which made the experience feel even more relaxed. They also sent us home with extras, which was such a nice surprise. Your group definitely helps decide the vibe of the table, but while we were there we saw both lively birthday tables and calmer family dinners. This place was good for a big party! We had a reservation here for a Friday night for a family birthday celebration. There were 10 of us, the perfect amount for a hibachi meal. It's a really loud and smokey restaurant, so be prepared to smell like food and to have an experience as your meal lol. Many of my family members got a mix of the seafood and beef plates but my sister and I shared the lemon chicken. Our chef was great and entertaining. The server got confused about our plates though multiple times and how some people were sharing orders. Not a huge issue though! We always really love our visits to shogun. As a family with young kids you just can't beat the entertainment. It's hard not to compare it to Benihana since the concept is similar, but honestly, we enjoyed this just as much and maybe more--for different reasons. Parking was super easy and the place wasn't crowded, which made the whole experience more relaxed and kid-friendly. Waiting at Benihana Mission Valley even with a reservation is a lot. The staff was very accommodating to my vegan requests, and the food was delicious. The flavors were a bit different than Benihana but great in their own way. My best friend came to town to surprise me at Shogun, where we'd gone to many moons ago (10+ yrs). Food: Our appetizers were great - garlic edamame, tempura veggies/shrimp, spicy tuna roll and maybe an Alaska roll (I forget). The sushi was just okay but the other two items were great. Honestly my meal wasn't memorable I don't even remember what I ordered. Salad dressing isn't the ginger dressing I remembered and I didn't love it but I'm sure others do. That's a no for me dawg. The noodles were off and were in some sauce I didn't recognize by site or taste but the shrimp was perfectly cooked (that's a plus). Best friend ordered the wagyu and chicken or shrimp, she also wasn't impressed. Luckily we were full from the apps so we packed up our food and gave it to the kids. I should also mention that we weren't getting the interactive teppanyaki grill experience, just a regular table, but we knew that. We did get to see some of it since it was behind us. Everyone seemed to have a good time from what I could see. Service: our server must have been newish but was really nice and had a great attitude so that helped. Actually from what we could tell when we walked in, the staff were super friendly. We didn't get plates, chopsticks or silverware for our appetizers. We had to ask. Drink: As a diabetic I am super paranoid to order sodas because I've been given the wrong item so many times. I felt the meal would go great with a sugar free option, so that's what I ordered but not what I got. I triple confirmed that it must be sugar free. It in fact was not (eek). Our server felt terrible I could see it on his face and he apologized and quickly fixed it. I'm all honesty If I were to return, I'd probably order the apps and a beer and watch the teppanyaki show from a table with a view. I am only giving this place 2 stars for 2 reasons: 1. the hibachi chef who was at our table was amazing 2. the food was pretty good Besides that, the service sucked. hostesses were rude and not very helpful. It took us 45 minutes AFTER we sat to get waters...and I had to get up and the hostesses for them was told "they're fulfilling your order right now" as if they were making cocktails for us, and they were given in plastic cups. I know it was the holiday season when we went and they were definitely busy but to not even be given water for 45 minutes is ridiculous. Our server came and then took our dr ink orders and forgot one of our drinks and didn't bring it for another 10+ minutes. Now we are at 1 hr 10 min and we haven't even eaten anything yet. 10 minutes later the chef comes and from the start he is goofy, silly and so fun. He was what we needed to brighten up the hungry, awkwardness of waiting SO long for food. He was talented and gave us a show for sure. Took about another 50 minutes to get all of the food cooked and done. I used to really enjoy coming here, but after this experience, I won't be back. My party of 7 went out to Shogun's for a birthday. The food is okay, but when you go to a Teppanyaki-style restaurant, it's supposed to be about the full interactive experience--not just average food. Unfortunately, the service completely ruined the night. When it comes to restaurants, I normally only write a review when they're either really good or really bad. In this case, this was really bad. I'd rather go somewhere with great service and mediocre food than the other way around, and this place proved exactly why. The biggest issue: we were overcharged by $139. It honestly felt like they assumed that because we were a larger group, no one would carefully check the bill. They added two full meals that were never ordered, included a Crunchy Roll that wasn't even brought out until we complained, and threw in other questionable charges. That's not a small mistake--that's a serious problem. As for service, our main server (AJ or DJ) was rude and unprofessional. When we asked about missing items, he snapped back with a comment about "only having two hands," which was completely unnecessary. Then, after we pointed out nearly $140 in errors and had the bill corrected, there wasn't even a simple apology. Nothing. That's unacceptable. This review is a warning for anyone planning to come here, especially in a large group: check your bill carefully. It really felt like because we were drinking and ordering a lot, they thought they could slip things past us. Whether it was intentional or just careless, a mistake that large is ridiculous. My family and I have been going to Shogun for many years, at least once every few months. This past visit was underwhelming & we may now be returning to one of their competitors. Breakdown: 5 stars for being seated immediately. Had a 12;30pm reservation for 6 on a Sunday afternoon. The place appeared to be pretty empty. 5 stars for new tables. They've remodeled the tables that adds 2 new seats. It was nice having a table that was not sticky. 3 stars for new menu. Some staple combo items are no longer available. The waitress informed us that the restaurant is under new ownership & the menus were updated about a month ago. They no longer have any 3 item (ex: steak, chicken & shrimp) entrees available on the lunch menu. We were also told we cannot modify by adding the add'l protein. We would have to order 2 separate lunch entrees. 5 stars for the chef. He was fun & engaging. 3 stars for the waitress. Not very friendly. She gave off some looks that came off as either being annoyed or put out. This happened twice. Once when someone asked for a straw & at the end when paying the bill. We were leaving a cash tip (20% for party of 6) but paying via the mobile cc machine, trying to by pass the tip section. She was anything but charismatic (pun intended, if you know the waitress' name) 3 stars for the food. The scallops were not of their usual quality and tasted more fishy than usual. The noodles that are now included do not add much value to the meal & can be left out. The potatoes in the mix veggies are undercooked & bland. read more

On April 27th @ 8pm we 5 family members always come to Shogun in Kearney mesa when we visit San Diego, this is the third time however we were disappointed with the chef he made mistakes, didn't season food, my husband ordered steak teriyaki and got regular steak when he mentioned it the chef he said oh and squirted from the bottle Teri sauce on this steak already on the plate, and the fried rice was hard. We came to Shogun to celebrate my birthday with my husband and kids, and overall it was a really great experience -- especially if you have little ones. The hibachi setup makes it super entertaining, and the kids were completely engaged the whole time. It made the dinner feel like more than just a meal, which is exactly what I was hoping for on my birthday. The food was seasoned incredibly well. Everything was flavorful, fresh, and cooked perfectly. You can tell they don't hold back on seasoning, which I really appreciated. Our chef was phenomenal -- not only talented, but fun and engaging. He really made the experience memorable and helped make the night feel special. The only downside was when we brought out my birthday cake. Our waiter told us they don't light candles, which was confusing and honestly a little disappointing because I saw candles being lit for other tables celebrating birthdays. I am writing to commend Shogun for its outstanding service and wonderful disposition to accommodate my mom who uses a wheelchair. I was so wonderfully surprised by the attention and positive interaction we experienced starting with the host followed by all those who came to serve us! My mom was so excited and happy! She is 90 years old! We must have ordered around seven food items. We wanted to try as many items as possible. We enjoyed them all. Each was so good that my mom wanted to return as soon as possible. So we returned today. And, again, all that positive interaction was exhibited along with the great food. It's part of their culture! We loved the serenity of the restaurant so consistent with Japanese culture! Let's start on the one positive thing. Our server, Darryl, was great- Attentive and professional. Everything else was absolute trash. The food was not good. We were seated 30 minutes later than our reservation. The sauces they serve were not given until near the end of the meal. They did not have enough fried rice for the table, so I did not get my rice until the end of the meal when everybody else had had theirs for 20 to 30 minutes The table next to us was seated after us and was able to leave about 30 minutes before us. This was just not a good experience. I have been craving hibachi for a few weeks and my schedule finally allowed for me to get it. That makes the whole situation stink, even more. For $150 for two people to eat, you just expect a little better. Could've went to Panda Express and had a better tasting meal for $120 less. read more

This place was just 'okay', once entering they kept asking me to place my order while the other person was late. I realized they were trying to close the kitchen and get people's orders in but not much I could do. Once the order was put in and served our waitress went off shift and we had a replacement take care of us. He was more fun and light spirited as we hurried to eat and take the rest in to-go boxes. Nothing special food wise, surprised how busy it was when I first got there and the prices were a bit steep for the quality received. Not sure I would return. read more
