The far end tables did not have a vent and see the very tight aisles
    Randall B.

Wow. And not in a good way. We arrived at 2 minutes after six (6pm was the reservation) and we had received a text from our host asking where we were as the restaurant was rushing them. We got in the lobby and there were the seven of us and two other people and the host literally yells our name even though we were right there. It was not pleasant. We were told we were being seated at the new tables and after a short walk we were seated in what looked like a construction zone. Paper and tape everywhere and two of the hot tables didn't even have vents so steam and cooking smells were everywhere. In fact we all a smelled of food when we left. Not great. The place was also very tight. People had to constantly move not to be hit by severs going by or other guests moving about.. the room is too small for the over 50 guests they had. There was only one small wall mounted ac unit so it was also hot. The servers seemed overwhelmed and this addition or remodel or whatever stil had them confused as to how to best operate. They tried but service was uneven at best. Some people got cloth namkis some got paper. Food was literslly dropped in front of us with no care at all. It was rushed and uncomfortable. The chef came out and he was wearing a mask. Basicslly no one could hear anything he said and we all wondered if he was sick. The show was very good and the food was also very good. It did not, however, make up for the bad service or, the heat, the smell, the unfinished room and the over all feeling of being very cramped. It would be hard to reccomend going here until this whole situation is figured out.

Came back here for a birthday and was impressed enough to write another review. Our chef this time was so much more friendly and charismatic, and they've added noodles (although it's just linguine) and more vegetables (broccoli, yellow bell peppers, and potatoes) to the entree so that you have better variety. My fried rice this time was not completely soaking in oil, and my medium rare filet mignon was so tender and buttery. Definitely recommend getting. The miso soup appetizer is fine but the mushrooms are just a step from raw, so much so that they taste dry in your mouth despite being in soup. Service was great this time, overall much improved experience. And the floor was not sticky this time.

Everytime we have reservations, we still have to wait a while to be seated which is why I took a star off. Parking is limited which is terrible during peak times, so I took another star off. We come here mainly to celebrate birthday dinners. The food here is better than Beni in my opinion, but can still be a hit or miss.

Cooking in action. Finished my salad (I requested dressing on the side).

The staff works really hard here. We visited on a very busy Saturday night. Every staff member from hostess to bus to wait staff, chefs, and managers moved very quickly to meet every customer's needs. They seemed to all help each other out as well if someone forgot something. We ordered the New York Strip and Shrimp combination. We haven't visited in a while and the menu had changed a bit. They added noodles and broccoli and potatoes in addition to their soup, salad, and steamed rice. Fried rice costs extra. We also enjoyed the Red Dragon roll as an appetizer along with some hot green tea. All was very delicious! Our chef was very friendly and entertaining too! We left very full and enjoyed our experience.

I have not been to Shogun in a long time but decided this would be a fun place for a family celebration lunch. The place was full of holiday parties and a 1 + hour wait for lunch so we decided to sit in the dining room. Big mistake! Our food took over an hour to get, items were cold, lukewarm , or completely forgotten. Chicken was forgotten and then when it came it was dry and over seasoned. The yakisoba came with the combo meals, so one child not only didn't get his mean until 30 + minutes after the rest of us he could have had noodles with a combo plate. Same flavor - only his came out hot and very late. The tables sounded like they were having fun but we were miserable in the dining room. Miso soup was lukewarm along with our combination plates. My filet was cooked perfectly it was just lukewarm as well. If the prices are the same for the tables and the experience make the food just as good. The Teppan tables the food is served right away and hot. So we had mediocre food without the show. The staff apologized it it ruined the celebration.

I think it's well fairly known that "Teppanyaki" is a French word that means "someone you love asked to go there for dinner because it's their birthday and you have to pick between Shogun and Benihana because you live in San Diego." Shōgun it is, friends. I appreciate that when I arrive at Shōgun, I'm not treated like I have personally offended the host just by existing (a staple of the Benihana experience). Quite the opposite. Great experience and prompt seating. As for the dining experience. Look, we all know you're here for the show (or because someone you love just got older by a year). The show is good. The chef is funny. The food is good. The server is attentive. Attentive ... this brings me to my point. In our case, mom wanted a jar of the salad dressing. Our server made that happen. Sure, it was for a reasonable charge. But I loved how it was prepared and presented like contraband. Just a random jar of dressing, moonshine style. No label. I'm not kidding by the way. I'm here for it. When mom makes a random request like that on her birthday and they deliver? Sign me up. They even gave her a paper hat. This is all to say this style of dining is about more than food. It's about making people feel special. This is the second time I've brought my mom here for that purpose and they have succeeded twice. Shōgun every time!

My best friend came to town to surprise me at Shogun, where we'd gone to many moons ago (10+ yrs). Food: Our appetizers were great - garlic edamame, tempura veggies/shrimp, spicy tuna roll and maybe an Alaska roll (I forget). The sushi was just okay but the other two items were great. Honestly my meal wasn't memorable I don't even remember what I ordered. Salad dressing isn't the ginger dressing I remembered and I didn't love it but I'm sure others do. That's a no for me dawg. The noodles were off and were in some sauce I didn't recognize by site or taste but the shrimp was perfectly cooked (that's a plus). Best friend ordered the wagyu and chicken or shrimp, she also wasn't impressed. Luckily we were full from the apps so we packed up our food and gave it to the kids. I should also mention that we weren't getting the interactive teppanyaki grill experience, just a regular table, but we knew that. We did get to see some of it since it was behind us. Everyone seemed to have a good time from what I could see. Service: our server must have been newish but was really nice and had a great attitude so that helped. Actually from what we could tell when we walked in, the staff were super friendly. We didn't get plates, chopsticks or silverware for our appetizers. We had to ask. Drink: As a diabetic I am super paranoid to order sodas because I've been given the wrong item so many times. I felt the meal would go great with a sugar free option, so that's what I ordered but not what I got. I triple confirmed that it must be sugar free. It in fact was not (eek). Our server felt terrible I could see it on his face and he apologized and quickly fixed it. I'm all honesty If I were to return, I'd probably order the apps and a beer and watch the teppanyaki show from a table with a view. Before I forget, it is LOUD so if you're going for a quiet intimate spot, maybe don't! Or if you're going to drown out the sound of a bad date or an in-law, please do. lol

    Teriyaki chicken meal.

This place was amazing. The food was cooked right in front of us. The service was excellent and the restaurant was cute. I had Teriyaki chicken with vegetables. All served with soup and salad and white or wild rice. They serve so much food. Be ready for leftovers.

We always really love our visits to shogun. As a family with young kids you just can't beat the entertainment. It's hard not to compare it to Benihana since the concept is similar, but honestly, we enjoyed this just as much and maybe more--for different reasons. Parking was super easy and the place wasn't crowded, which made the whole experience more relaxed and kid-friendly. Waiting at Benihana Mission Valley even with a reservation is a lot. The staff was very accommodating to my vegan requests, and the food was delicious. The flavors were a bit different than Benihana but great in their own way. It's so nice to have a spot where we can enjoy a teppanyaki experience without feeling like we're in a rush or packed in with crowds. We'll definitely be back!

I am only giving this place 2 stars for 2 reasons: 1. the hibachi chef who was at our table was amazing 2. the food was pretty good Besides that, the service sucked. hostesses were rude and not very helpful. It took us 45 minutes AFTER we sat to get waters...and I had to get up and the hostesses for them was told "they're fulfilling your order right now" as if they were making cocktails for us, and they were given in plastic cups. I know it was the holiday season when we went and they were definitely busy but to not even be given water for 45 minutes is ridiculous. Our server came and then took our dr ink orders and forgot one of our drinks and didn't bring it for another 10+ minutes. Now we are at 1 hr 10 min and we haven't even eaten anything yet. 10 minutes later the chef comes and from the start he is goofy, silly and so fun. He was what we needed to brighten up the hungry, awkwardness of waiting SO long for food. He was talented and gave us a show for sure. Took about another 50 minutes to get all of the food cooked and done. We spent over 2 hours at this restaurant and at the end of it I walked away thinking it was pretty good but nothing to wait that long for and I will probably never go back.

    Bar area and food.

Is there a birthday reward program like Benihana?

Nope, they don't have any rewards programs. Just a free dessert if it's your birthday and you tell the waiter.

Do they offer lunch menu on Sat and Sun?

Do they automatically add a gratuity for a party of 6?

    Gray

    Yum yum sauce?

Yes they do. Very good with the vegetables and seafood :)

Can they accommodate a gluten free allergy?

I don't think so, everything is being cooked on one griddle. Unless they cook everything and then clean it and cook you a separate meal.

What time does lunch end on a weekday? Do they close in the middle of the day (i.e. 3-5pm)?

Lunch ends at 3. They do not close in the middle of the day.

Does the lunch menu apply on the weekend?

    As i know yes

How many seats does a table hold?

Twelve of us including four teenagers and an elementary school child were accommodated relatively comfortably at a large teppanyaki table although couldn't really imagine more - three each at the ends, and six lengthwise.

Booking was easy through their website. When we arrived around 6:30, and there were still a handful of open tables so reservations may not always be necessary, but it's probably still a good idea. Our server was phenomenal and really elevated the experience. She gave great recommendations and even let us sample both the Cabernet and Merlot when we couldn't decide on a bottle of wine. We ordered a variety of dishes: * Spicy Edamame: very flavorful, but definitely on the spicy side so be warned if you're sensitive to heat. * Fire Fire Roll: light and fresh fish, but the seared salmon flavor didn't really stand out. * Orange Roll: also light and fresh, but I didn't really pick up the citrus/lemon zest element. A bit underwhelming compared to expectations. * Salmon Belly Nigiri: very fresh and a favorite at the table. * Crab Roll Special: generous portion of fresh crab. * Yuzu Cheesecake: served with three spoons to share. It tasted like a classic cheesecake, pleasant, but I didn't really get a distinct yuzu flavor. The space is cute and conveniently located in a shopping center with plenty of parking. Overall, the atmosphere is laid-back and comfortable. While the rolls themselves are fairly simple and not especially standout, everything tasted fresh and the service was excellent, which made the experience enjoyable.

We were first to enter and it was clear immediately that omakase is this restaurants institution; delicate lighting that highlighted the bar that separated diner and chef, clean lines everywhere, and just overall a beautiful place. The theme of Sushi MARU is truly attention to detail, and that extends from arrival, to service, to, of course, the food. Staff were incredibly attentive and easy to talk to, including the chefs. The food, I will comment on just generally as the menu is constantly changing (as is the case with many omakase): each dish was composed of pieces that complemented each other well and created a cohesive flavor pallette. Each nigiri was artfully prepared that emphased the quality and cut of the fish, and were complemented by flavors to further highlight that. The flow of the evening was non-traditional omakase, but it felt perfect. Price ($180pp) is not for the faint of heart, but is cheaper than others I've seen. Everything was absolutely fantastic from start to finish. All of the fish is high-quality, and most of it is imported from Japan. They do also source fantastic shrimp and uni from San Diego at times. Both sushi chefs are super personable, very skilled, and they have rad knife skills! Service from the waitstaff was attentive yet unobtrusive. The restaurant is diminutive and consists primarily of the sushi bar with 10 seats and an attached patio dining area. They do have a small parking lot which is appreciated! The pacing was just right, and each course was presented simply yet beautifully. I truly enjoyed this experience and give it my highest possible accolades! I loved that we were able to taste test three different sakes before choosing, and the carafe of sake was perfect for two of us to enjoy with our meal. There was no wait here but parking was a nightmare and there is almost no street parking right around the restaurant which is near the trolley tracks. I recalled coming here for a light dinner with my husband many years ago and thinking it was good, but expensive. I asked if they had Japanese soda for my daughter because it was not on the menu, and they said no, but after we came back from the bathroom the host had found one for us. They gave us chopstick helpers and were very nice. We ordered braised pork belly as an app and wagyu nigiri, albacore, hamachi, salmon belly, 2 salmons, and unagi. I think that was all. They nicely split the order so half had no wasabi for the kid. They were very considerate and I appreciated it. The food however took a while to come out. The braised pork belly was ok, but the fat had not rendered as well as at some other places so we ate around it. The flavor was good though. The hamachi was probably the best item-tender and tasty. The albacore was standard and a generous piece, but the salmon was a bit tough and my kid who usually inhales salmon tasted and then left the salmon. The wagyu had good flavor but was surprisingly chewy. For $26 I would expect it to melt in your mouth but it was not easy to bite through. The eel was very tender but had a weird taste, and was disappointing. I found myself chewing on a scale from maybe the salmon and was overall underwhelmed by the food. The bill for a soda and the sushi came to almost $150 after tax and tip for me and a 6-year old. Usually my husband and I and my kid go to places with better quality and pay the same price for the three of us. Will not be back.

It looks like most of the other tables were reserved for reservations. The decor is modern and very clean and chic. They also had a high chair and was accommodating with our baby. Food was incredible and the quality of the fish is evident throughout. We started with the mixed shrimp and vegetable tempura - light crispy batter, really good. The sashimi champaloo came with 12 pieces of sashimi, salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and the fish of the day was albacore. For rolls, we got the Luna Lemon, Maru's Sushi Toro, and Hamachi Hiro. The rolls were a good size and I loved how each had a fun twist (but at the same time not TOO crazy with their combinations like some other sushi places). You can tell it was designed with intention and each roll had a nice balance. The Luna Lemon roll was great with spicy tuna inside, salmon outside, and the soy dressing and shallot oil put it over the top. The Maru's Sushi - Toro roll looked so good in the photos so I knew we had to order it. The negitoro was delicious and did not disappoint. The Hamachi Hiro roll was hearty and loved the combination of yellowtail outside the shrimp tempura in the inside. We were blown away by how fast the service is. The staff was friendly and on top of everything, and the food came out REALLY fast. For example, when we ordered an extra roll at the end, it came out in maybe 3 minutes and we were shocked. Highly recommend!

We ordered takeout, and the food was packaged well!…read more We ordered the: -Sashimi champloo ($31.95): This had twelve pieces of prime cuts of salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and chef's choice. Every piece was delicious! -Chirashi bowl ($30.95): I really enjoyed the sushi rice in this bowl since not every restaurant does quality sushi rice. The sashimi was pretty good, but quality wise the sashimi champloo was definitely superior. -Salmon mango roll ($9.50): This had spicy salmon, mango, and ume furikake. This was quite tasty, and definitely had a kick to it. -Maru Maru roll ($9.50): This had imitation crab meat, shrimp tempura, and avocado. A basic roll but still good. -Chicken katsu curry don ($16.95): This was disappointing because the portion was quite small for the price. I do like how the curry was packaged separately. All in all, Hakumaru has quality sashimi and rolls, but could work on portion size for chicken katsu curry don.

We knew it was popular and it was recommended to make reservations well in advance which we did. When you get to the hostess stand on ground level, she greeted us warmly and directed us to the elevator that would take us to Lumi. Once at the top, you're greeted by the Lumi staff to check you in. As you get to view the roof top, there are lots of tables, a strategically placed bar, some fireplace tables, comfortable seating, a live DJ, and beautifully done murals and deco. Very tasteful! The food was amazing and so fresh! If you don't like sushi, Lumi has a lot of dishes that would also accommodate your palette. Appetizers, sushi, and drinks were all great. Prices is a little high but keep in mind that you're also paying for the experience! The staff were all friendly and our host Becky was so sweet and attentive! She checked in on us regularly and gave us great recs! Highly recommend!
