They should have a sign at the door: No Kids Allowed At least this is true for dinner. I was surprised by what they didn't have - customer service. We asked for an alcohol free drink for our tween son. Nope. No sodas without caffeine. No juice (unless you're getting a cocktail). Shirley Temple? Nope. Nothing for a kid. We tried three cocktails. They were fine. Not remarkable. The food was good - fish in particular was excellent. Just about everything is spicy. A simple request for sauce on the side - categorically denied - even for sauce that was a last-minute addition on top. The steak, which would have been unaltered by having sauce on the side instead of on top, was rendered inedible by our child because they insist on slathering sauce on top. We ordered half the menu, hoping something would be edible. I'm disappointed that we didn't leave. So please enjoy the food, but don't bring your kids. Loved the pieces of corn throughout, and the toppings complemented the texture well. - Afro-Caribbean shrimp dumplings: probably the most disappointing for me because I saw so many good reviews for this. The dough was too thick and I really didn't like the texture of the shrimp inside - it was lukewarm and kind of.. clumpy. I felt like I could've made better dumplings myself. - Kanpachi en banana leaf: flavor was a bit lacking for me but the fish was cooked very well, great moisture and flavor. - Fried chicken drumsticks: as a fried chicken lover, I struggled to finish my portion. I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience was disappointing enough that I feel compelled to share it. We arrived within the restaurant's stated 15-minute grace period for our reservation. Due to nearby filming impacting parking access, my partner briefly had to locate alternate parking while I remained on-site. Rather than occupy a table, I voluntarily sat at the bar and began ordering food and drinks while waiting. Despite physically being present and actively spending money at the restaurant, I was told we would still be charged the late reservation fee. The situation escalated after my partner jokingly said to me, "let's just sit at the bar so she can chill the fuck out." The comment was made privately to me, smiling and clearly joking, and was never directed at the hostess. Nevertheless, management approached us and accused us of "harassing staff" and using aggressive language. When I calmly clarified that the comment had not been directed at staff, the manager largely ignored me entirely, despite the reservation being under my name. Instead, she focused almost exclusively on reprimanding my partner. As a woman of color, the interaction felt uncomfortable and dismissive. What could have been a simple moment of clarification became an unnecessarily hostile interaction. We had already ordered multiple dishes and drinks but chose to finish quickly and leave to dine elsewhere because the environment no longer felt welcoming. The most disappointing part was not that someone overheard a curse word -- it was the complete lack of hospitality, de-escalation, or customer care afterward. The dumpling itself was delicious pops of flavor in your mouth. For the mains, we got the pork belly and the fried chicken. The fried chicken were delicious, juicy and airy and perfectly seasoned. The pork belly was okay for me. Delicious and crunchy. Lastly, for our dessert we got the coconut flan and the raspao. The raspao was a fun dessert, wherein you get a big bowl of crushed ice and multiple sauces and milk. The concept of it was fun and we definitely had fun tasting all the different sauces but the actual taste was just okay. The coconut flan was my favorite dessert as it was nice and creamy and indulgent to eat. Service/Ambiance Dinner time was packed so it was a good thing we had a reservation. We didn't notice anything of sorts maybe because we were on the patio or maybe because we were loud ourselves. This place is very expensive and the portions are very small. BUT. The food was delicious. Coming with a group is the only way you'll get to experience more than a few dishes unless you are prepared to spend a lot. My husband is Panamanian. He said that this food very slightly reminds and/or tastes like flavors of Panama, but the VERY modern take and fusion is still very delicious. The oyster shooter was $20 and one of my least favorite things. I love oysters, I love quail eggs, but it was just meh. Fried chicken was also forgettable. Everything else was superb. I saw that Si Mon was on the list of 101 best restaurants in LA so I made a reservation for dinner! FLAVOR (4.1/5): 1. KANPACHI CEVICHE: The ceviche was good! The plantain chips were a great pairing and made it fun to eat. 2. TUNA CARPACCIO YUCA TOSTADA: Started off strong with the tuna tostada, which was the best dish of the night. Perfect for sharing between 2 people, although I honestly wish we got another round - they were that good. Smoky, light, and flakey with some bite from the black lime. 3. It even has a open sky roof with palm trees peaking though. Such a nice, chill vibe. After seeing "LA Infatuation (newsletter)" gave this restaurant an 8.6, I had to see for myself what made S!Mon so deserving. Graciously greeted at the door and was seated in the plant filled patio side of the space. It was a damp night and we were happy to be near the fireplace. Our very polite server advised 5 - 7 dishes for the 2 of us to share, depending on the size of the items we chose. We chose 5 and could have tucked into a 6th, but left feeling satisfied not stuffed. The portions are smallish for the price, but that is the norm around Venice & Santa Monica. We really loved the vibrant fresh herby flavors. Surf Clam Ceviche was delicious, I was literally sipping the sauce from a spoon once the clams were gone. Afro-Caribbean Shrimp Dumplings & Dungeness Crab Gaucho were both winners. Kanpachi smothered in sauce with kaffir lime and served on a banana leaf was a decent size piece of fish. Marinated Apple & Pear Salad with Endive had a hint of sweetness and was a good compliment to everything else we ordered. Cocktails were the weak spot for us. The Little Rituals ($20) was so very light, it lacked flavor and I didn't catch even a subtle note of the palo santo. Soft Core ($19) didn't really taste like whisky at all although the presentation with a small square of banana leaf floating atop a large ice cube with a a few tiny pieces of pop corn was inventive. Let's start with the most fundamental part of a restaurant: the food. This is the best duck I have had this side of the Mississippi. Everything else was good. Now for what people in Venice actually care about. It's a hodgepodge of jungle foliage with ancient looking funerary urns / vessels. The uplighting is especially delicate. We were confused why many things were creamy and white, but in the end they all actually tasted delicious. Also they did make holes in their roof for palm trees and made us feel like we were at a Mesopotamian bazaar so points for ambiance. Plus there are no rattan pennants. The rudest manager I've have ever experienced in my life. It was my husbands birthday and Father's Day, suffice to say we walked out after our sparkling water, something I've never done in my life. If you want to enjoy dinner, find another place because this is not it. We went to another restaurant and had a lovely time. I'm not sure why people think they can treat people terribly. Great spot for food and summer vibes. Catch up with friends, go on a date or I even saw families with a kid or two. I made a reservation for 5pm on a Wednesday night just a few days prior. The restaurant was pretty empty for the first ~45 min but by 6pm it was absolutely buzzing/packed. - Native Son cocktail (4/5) : Strong, alcohol-forward blend with a wonderful toasted coconut flavor. I didn't really catch the mango brandy but it was delicious nonetheless. - Curry Spiced Sashimi (3/5) : Smooth like butter and the curry was not too overpowering but probably wouldn't order again. - Kanpachi Ceviche (5/5) : Amazing. Plantain chips perfectly crispy and easy to scoop up the leche de tigre and fish cubes. Very fresh, bright and flavorful. - La Cesar Salad (3/5) : Ok.. Nothing special. - Baked Oysters (1/5) : Totally not worth $36 for 6 oysters and the shredded coconut texture was kind of weird. Lacked some acidity/brightness. - Sweet Corn Bollo (4/5) : A little too sweet for me but well made super smooth tamale with tasty toppings. - Grilled Pork Collar (5/5) : Huge serving and perfectly cooked. Meat was juicy, tender and well seasoned. I can only describe collar as a hybrid of belly and loin except the fat is better dispersed. Very nice dining experience. Food was top notch. We got the coconut ceviche 10/10, Cesar was unique in flavor and the greens were fresh. We also got the pupusa which was served very hot with a sour cream, salsa, and cabbage. To finish we had the hangar steak which was amazing.
