What's really nice about the place is that it's open pretty late and offers a full menu. I often times will forget to eat in the summer because I usually associate dinner with nightfall so having this place open until 9:30pm is perfect. It was only me, so I had the pickled long bean with pork. It's a little salty on its own but with rice it's great. I cannot testify on its authenticity but I will say it was tasty and the wait was minimal once I ordered. The portions are family style so I had enough for another couple of meals. What a greasy spoon this place is!!! There was enough oil in each of the dishes ordered to make French fries!!! I don't understand why the excess of oil to make what I consider some easy food. Longtime Patrons Disappointed by Decline We've been dining at this Sishuancrestaurant since 2003, back when Albert owned the place and the food was consistently flavorful and fresh. We've continued to support the restaurant through its changes in ownership -- even as quality began to slip -- because we believe in supporting local businesses and have a long history here. Unfortunately, the experience has steadily declined, especially over the past few years. The current owner appears to be a one-man show -- host, server, cashier, and possibly even cook. Service is just okay, but strangely impersonal for longtime customers. Despite coming in at least once a month, he still greets us with "First time?" every single visit. We've tried a range of dishes over the years. We used to order the Mongolian beef, but had to switch after the meat became consistently tough and gristly, overwhelmed by onions and peppers, and less beef. We moved on to beef with broccoli, which was passable but still suffered from poor meat quality. Then we settled on sesame chicken, which was decent for a while, but now even that dish has declined -- the chicken is dried out, tough, rubbery, and tastes like it's been microwaved rather than freshly prepared. The green beans were thick and undercooked, and the chow mein was just okay. On our most recent visit yesterday, we arrived at 2:35 p.m., just five minutes past the end of the lunch menu hours (which end at 2:30). When I tried to place an order, the owner immediately began yelling, "No! You can't order! Too late! No lunch special!" I wasn't even asking for the lunch special -- I simply wanted to order sesame chicken -- but he seemed more concerned with ensuring we'd be charged the higher price than actually helping us place our order. To top it off, when we asked to take leftovers home, he insisted on wrapping them himself -- cramming rice, green beans, and chicken into a single small container, smashing the lid closed, apparently to save on takeout packaging. It came off as penny-pinching and inconsiderate. It's disappointing to write this, especially after supporting this restaurant for over 20 years. But the food quality, customer service, and overall experience just aren't what they used to be. Sadly, we'll be taking a break from this place for now. read more

I discovered this restaurant a few years ago, and would order the traditional favorites: Fish Fillet (D2), Mongolian lamb (D6), and Chicken Chow Mein (D8). However, recently, I went on a Sunday and the person I went with decided to be adventurous, ordered the House Special Beef with Cumin (F3); Steamed Fish Fillet with soft tofu (H18); and House Special Duck (G2). It was as one guest said, a long wait, but well worth it. I asked who the cook was that day since on previous occasions when I ordered the Fish Fillet, it has been prepared differently on separate occasions, as has the chow mein. The only reason it's not 5/5 and I said 4.5 is because I asked for the spiciest level and they gave me medium. (I think they didn't believe I could handle it). We all loved the food and especially the Spicy Sichuan Tofu W/Fish. -Home Style Five Spice Braised Pork Shoulder 5/5. Texture, taste, and presentation was beautiful and is super juicy and saucy. -Cumin Lamb 4.5/5. Chewy, not gamey taste at all, and ample flavor. -Twice Cooked Bacon Cut Pork 4/5. It was good, thin cut pork that was nice, albeit a bit greasy but that is the style of the dish and have no complaints. -Spicy Szechuan Tofu W/Fish 6/5. Yes I say 6/5 because it was just that darn good haha. Soft, and extremely delicious and everyone in the group scarfed it down instantly. -Chow Mein w/Beef 4.5/5. It was really tasty and I would get it again. Only gripe is that it's smaller portion for the price we paid for, but the taste was one of the best beef chow mein's I've had. Overall, for 5 dishes and after tax and tip, it came down to roughly $33/person and that is a fair price for good food that was generous portions and decent service. Good spice without losing flavor. Large variety of choices even for those who don't like spicy food. The braised pork is a tender non-spicy balance to pair with a hotter dish, but also great on its own. So glad to have found a replacement for the Sichuan restaurant that closed in El Cerrito and they even have Sichuan style kimchee. Fantastically spicy Sichuan food. All our dishes were bathed in the fiery red of Sichuan chili peppers. The beef with fresh tofu was perfect. The silky coolness of the tofu married beautifully with the heat of the chili. The Dan Dan noodles was more like a soup but still delicious, with its hand pulled noodles. And the chili fried chicken reminded me of Taiwanese popcorn chicken. Crispy with plenty of salt, pepper and spice to add that extra kick. Service was spot on too. I only ordered the Chongqing Chili Pepper Chicken to-go and it was sooooooo hot and spicy. My eyes are watering even thinking about it. The unbelievable spiciness seemed to cancel out any of the flavor. Seriously, the box was nearly 1/4 filled with inedible red chili's. After the first bite, my entire mouth started to burn, and no, it wasn't the sinus-cleaning heat. I ate about 1/3 of the box and then waved the white flag. I didn't have any feeling in my mouth for a while. I then removed the chili peppers and saved the chicken for later (it was just chili peppers and small chicken pieces). After eating a few bites as a snack the next day, I realized the spice hadn't calmed down, and I quit. The Chongqing Chili Pepper Chicken had finally won a complete victory! Great ambience. Excellent service. We had two items. First the beef chow fun. The flavor was delicious, noodles perfect, beef was tender, however for the price, it was skimpy on the beef. The second dish I was very disappointed in. It was the mixed vegetable dish. The vegetables were fresh & perfectly cooked. All our food came out fast, fast fast. However, it looked like there was a third of a cup of oil or more swimming in the bottom of the platter. At my age, I can't take all that oil. If you're young, and you don't care, go for it. So, hmmm. I've mixed feelings about this place. On the one hand, Sichuan Style rests on the premises of the late, semi-great King Tsin restaurant, which was a staple of my youth growing up. I will admit that institution went down hill seriously in the 90's and 00's: the last time I ate there was about 12 years ago and it was clearly in its death throes. SS is certainly a great improvement over what was left of a once-great restaurant. The interior of the restaurant shows remains of its former incarnation here and there (mostly the panels on the east wall), but is far more open and airy than before. While pleasant, it feels a bit unfinished--as if a decorator got started on the place and then suddenly quit. That apart, SS boasts a pretty broad menu, with a considerable number of offerings (not all of them szechuan, as we used to say in my youth). Most of them are quite well done. The sauce can be a bit heavy and gloppy at times; sichuan should have some zing in AND have a medium-thick sauces. But in general the food is of very good quality and the spices are well-balanced. The pork dishes in particular are well-done. I'm not as familiar with the Chinese offerings of the East Bay as I once was, but I would say overall, it could compete comfortably with other restaurants in the area. That they also usually have specials that seem to cater to a more Chinese clientele is perhaps an indication of that as well. Is it a spot I would like to sit and dine? Maybe not, but for a takeout order, they make a pretty damn fine meal. read more
