I've known this spot has been around for a long time, and I noticed it's been receiving more and more attention. It's summer, so it's the perfect time to finally check this spot out. Parking: They're located in a high foot traffic plaza with a small parking lot so finding an open spot will be difficult. Ambiance/Environment: This is a quick grab-n-go location. No indoor seating. They have four outdoor tables. The donuts are displayed and labeled. Love the decor and vibes. Service: I was greeted immediately every time I entered. Everyone is courteous, quick, & efficient. Doughnuts & coffee: The donuts are surprisingly not overly sweet. Presentation is absolutely eye catching. Their flavors sound intimidating yet interestingly delicious, and it tastes even better. Their flavors sound drinks are a hit or miss. So far, I've only tried their mochas and lattes. Their drinks are sweet. If you prefer sweet drinks, then these are for you. Their cold foams could use some work bc it disappears after 20 min and lack some flavor. - S'mores Mocha (seasonal) - Brown Sugar Latte (seasonal) - Vanilla Latte (staple) - Donuts: Mango Sticky Rice, Potato Chip Streusel, Butter & Salt, Saigon Cinnamon Crumb Pricing: They're constantly offering seasonal donuts and drinks. Highly recommend downloading their rewards app. You'll get a welcome reward and many coupons.
Hands down one of the best donut shops around! I stopped by on the 4th of July and tried their summer specials--the Passion Fruit Pavlova donut and the S'mores Iced Mocha--and both were absolutely delicious. The staff is always warm and friendly, the donuts are incredibly fresh, soft, and full of flavor, and the coffee never disappoints. They also typically carry a Vegan and gluten friendly donut option. Whenever I'm in the OC, I have to stop by for a donut... or two... or three. Definitely a place that's worth the visit every time!
The summer seasonal doughnuts are back, some favs are definitely the passionfruit pavlova! The balance and freshness of this passionfruit doughnut is incredible! Tastes similar to freshly made sweet bread filled with custard/cream. Service is always friendly and quick, along with great vibes all around. Def recommend trying all the new summer seasonal offerings!
Been back to back to back still my fave donut shop. I hope the passion fruit one becomes a permanent menu item.
When I'm in Newport Beach or Costa Mesa, I always make a quick stop at Sidecar Doughnuts. Butter and Salt is our top favorite. In season is the Buttermilk Strawberry Doughnut, used fresh strawberries and cake like dough.
I ordered online the huckleberry donut and mango sticky rice donut. Quick service and it was ready in no time. I would highly recommend the hucklberry donut, the dough itself was delightful and not dry at all, it had a really great base flavor and the frosting itself added a great taste. Mango sticky rice was just whatever, it was bland and underwhelming, definitely stick to the basics. I would comeback again to try their other flavors. Just very pricy...
Friendly and welcoming staff, clean establishment. Some donut samples are offered and they will cut another flavor if you ask. Free donuts on your Bday month (we live that). They are a bit pricey as far as donuts go, however, most of the donuts are large so it feels like a better value. Free parking, good size coffee selections and they sell swag.
The donuts here are cool, fun, and unique flavors! but it is definitely on the pricey side. I paid ~$45 for a dozen. My experience with premium donuts have been poor, but these one still reminisce a classic donut texture and flavor which I appreciate greatly. The banana bread latte was more of just a straight banana flavor, but it was good if you're into that sorta stuff. Overall, it's a small shop with standing room only and outdoor seating. The staff are attentive and helped/managed a large group of 15-20 people easily. They also give free samples to try!
I'm not a huge doughnut connoisseur, but try to stop in to Sidecar when I'm in town, 2 or 3 times a year. Always very fresh and delicious. Essentially, if I'm going to eat a doughnut, it must be pretty spectacular and Sidecar never misses. Coffee drinks are very good. Limited outside only seating.
I'm a sucker for a good donut and Sidecar never disappoints! These a higher end donuts that have a more cake like consistency than your average donut. During my last visit, my husband and I shared the salted butter and blueberry cheesecake donuts, which were both amazing. We also ordered a cold brew, which complemented the donuts nicely. One thing to note is that prices here are steep--the two donuts and a coffee ended up being close to $20. Service here is friendly! It is a tiny shop that is more of a grab and go spot, but there a few seats in the front to enjoy your sweet treat if your inclined to have it there. Overall, I'd recommend checking out Sidecar if you haven't already!
I haven't been to Sidecar in years and this visit left me wondering why it took so long to come back. It was a bit pricey but I guess everything else is too, especially in OC. The samples of the chocolate and strawberry donuts were good, although I was not a fan of the strawberry, so I went with an old fashion glaze and a mocha. Nothing disappointed but I do wish they had a maple option without bacon or salt, just a fluffy maple like I had so many years ago. This is a small storefront with great customer service. There's a couple small tables outside to enjoy your donuts there, but most get it to-go. That's this critic's review, until next time, I'll be eating.
Really good! I've been here many times but I realized I've never reviewed this place. Of all times I've been here, it's no question a 5 star. The donuts were really fresh and hot when we got them. My wife loves the butter and salt one and it's absolutely perfect! The saltiness balances out with the richness and sweetness. I also ordered the golden hour grey, which was the seasonal flavor, and it was really unique. It was citrusy and light. Sidecar is definitely in it's own league and its tough to find other donuts to really compete with them. The store was pretty small with very limited seating at this location so it's more of a grab and go type of location. It's not too far from the beach though. Service was really efficient. Even if there was a line, it goes by quite quickly. It's worth it anyways!
Sidecar never ever misses and they have me hooked with their seasonal flavors. They have the best donuts, and I'm not even a donut person. I specifically LOVE their cake donuts. I could go on and on about them... seriously. This time we had to come try their collab with Cake Picnic, which was the golden hour grey donut. Let me tell you, it was bomb.com. The orange flavor was phenomenal and I have no notes. We also got the strawberry donut and hot chocolate with almond milk, both obviously very good as well. It was my first time getting the hot chocolate and I was honestly surprised with how yummy it was. It was not too chocolatey and not too milky. It was the perfect balance and the perfect pairing with the donuts.
This is the OG of donuts. Hand crafted and never cookie cutter. I've never been into cake donuts until I tried sidecar. Yeast raised donuts have always been my go to but once I came here they offer a cake donut that you can't pass up. With amazing flavors like huckleberry, cinnamon crumb (our family fav and the savory one basil egg Benedict) They have occasional seasonal flavors that keep your taste buds guessing. Epic fail Sidecar Management. Came today & had pre-ordered. Pre-order line for pickup was 10x longer than the walk-in line. Unable to cancel the online order & would have been incredibly faster to just walk in. If you're going to take pre-orders with set pick-up times, and see a massive line for pick-up, take care of all of those people first since the walk-in line was so short. Update: online order was placed for 9am. Finally got my 6 doughnuts at 10:01. And big THANK YOU to the employee who finally took charge writing down names of orders that were ready and going outside to announce them. And to the poor girl at the register closest to the door. So many rude people just laying into her when it clearly was not her fault. Management needs to do better! read more

Sidecar donuts, you have my heart. I wish I could give this place 6 stars!!! Between the immediate smell of freshly made donuts (and freshly cooked bacon!), the wide variety of delicious flavors, and the excellent service we received, I would recommend Sidecar Doughnuts again and again. This donut shop is small but mighty, making fresh donuts every hour with above average flavors like their most popular huckleberry, butter and salt, vegan apple cider, maple bacon, and the list goes on. My personal favorite was the huckleberry doughnut which is also what they are known for. We also grabbed some drip coffee here and it had such a good flavor, you didn't even need to add sugar. The inside is quaint but very cute with wood detailing and retro signage. There is tons of parking too! If there is a line, don't fret, those freshly made doughnuts are sooo worth it! read more
OMG!!!! I have never and I mean never had a donut like this before! When my skin crawls when I take a bite and when I subconsciously start clapping my hands like a little kid hahaha you got me! My wife was laughing at me. We literally came from having dinner and said no to dessert cause we were full! 7 donuts later! The inside was really neat but the donuts are the main attraction! I came in this morning around 7 AM with my boyfriend after recommending your shop based on my past positive experiences. We drove over 30 minutes to avoid the usual long lines, excited to get some donuts--especially the Dubai Chocolate, which we specifically ordered two of. When we got home, I was shocked to find that one of the Dubai Chocolate donuts didn't have any filling. Considering the premium price, this felt like a complete waste of $6. It's incredibly frustrating to go out of our way for something we were looking forward to, only to be completely let down by what seems like a careless oversight. This is not the level of quality I expected, and it's honestly unacceptable. I hope this issue is taken seriously and that quality control is addressed moving forward. read more

sidecar is one of the few spots where the hype actually checks out everything's made fresh daily and you can taste it--fluffy, pillowy dough, quality toppings, and thoughtful flavor combos maple bacon - 9/10 classic for a reason. the sweet + salty balance is so satisfying. maple glaze is rich without being too sweet, and the bacon adds that perfect crunch passionfruit pavlova - 10/10 a seasonal special that blew us away. the tangy curd center w. whipped cream + pavlova crumble? literal magic. bright, refreshing, and not overly sweet doughnuts are $5.75 each--pricey but worth it for the quality + size super friendly staff and the costa mesa location has good parking if you go early we'll definitely be back to try more rotating flavors read more

Sidecar makes their doughnuts fresh daily- my kind of doughnut joint! I love that they come out with a new vegan flavor monthly for us dairy free folk. They even have a gluten free doughnut! All flavors I've tried have been heavenly. I loooove their vegan chocolate and coconut one that pops up now and then. Their coffee cake one is great too. Not too sweet and you can really taste the freshness. All the employees are kind too so you definitely can't go wrong by coming here. Best to order online! read more

I came here while my spouse went to pop pie next door. I was greeted in a friendly manner upon entering. Not gonna lie the options are a little weird. It's not your typical donut shop down the street, this is a bougie pinky's up kinda place and the prices reflect it! I had the choc-a-lot donut with a vanilla oat milk latte and it was $12. I do-nut come here often and the prices are why. These are quality donuts with unique flavor offerings but tbh I would be just as happy with my local and much cheaper donut shop. If you wanna spend some dollar dollar bills check this place out. No indoor seating, no bathrooms and okay service. read more

I visited for the first time on National Donut Day and braved the line of 50+ people to get my hands on their six pack of freshly made donuts. Luckily for me, and my hungry stomach, if you purchase their 6 pack of classic flavors, you can skip the line and head straight to the counter. The pre-selected flavors include their famous butter & salt, old fashioned, vanilla bean glazed, choc-a-lot, huckleberry, mint chocolate chip, and bullseye donuts. You can purchase a six pack for $28 or a dozen for $54. Don't forget to cash in that Yelp check-in offer for $5 off your purchase of $25+ as well. These donuts were absolutely divine. Sidecar also releases a number of seasonal flavors each month. They even offer a number of vegan and gluten free options. For the classics, I adored the old fashion and huckleberry donuts the most. If heaven had a smell, it would be Sidecar Doughnuts. From the second you walk in, you're hit with that warm, buttery, just-fried perfection--and somehow the donuts taste even better than they smell. Every donut is insanely fresh, perfectly balanced (never too sweet), and you can tell they actually care about quality. The seasonal flavors are always creative, but even the classics are elite-tier. Shoutout to Beck, our server--absolute legend. Super friendly, patient, and genuinely made the experience better. You can tell when someone actually enjoys what they do, and Beck brought great energy and recommendations. If you're even thinking about going to Sidecar, stop thinking and go. Got a box of 6 donuts. Went home to find raw dough on the inside. For almost $5 a piece, these should be properly cooked. I had to cut through all the other donuts to make sure they were cooked through. Service has always been fine, parking is sometimes a battle. Okay so I LOVE Sidecar - I think it's top 3 donut shops for me. Butter and Salt is one my faves. A classic and always so good. I came to this location yesterday to try the new matcha and strawberries donut. Tried to order ahead on the app for pickup, but it said it wasn't available, likely because I tried around 8 pm and they closed at 9. The line here can be hit or miss. When it first opened years ago, the line was always out the door and down the building, but in recent years, the line has gotten better. Last night, there were only 3 people ahead of me. The experience last night was odd but okay, and could've be better. Staff here aren't friendly. The staff member who assisted me just looked at me when it was my turn to order; no greeting, nothing. She just looked at me like she was Disgust from Inside Out. It was as if my presence annoyed her. I ordered my donuts and walked to the register. She rang me up, told me my total, and that was it. The only words she said to me were "anything else" and my total. I noticed another customer asked if they were going to bring out any more of the limited edition flavors and the staff seemed annoyed at that question. The matcha strawberry donut is a limited time offering and it was again, just okay. The matcha flavor didn't really come through, but the green was pretty. I feel like with how dense the donut was, it would've been nice to have more cream on top. Will I come back? Probably because the donuts are delicious. Will I expect nice, friendly service? Nope. The donuts here are really good! But I'll be honest and say I don't quite get the hype. Kinda pricey considering 1 donut is almost $5. Service is good, they have free samples (at least when I went) and the donuts are great quality hearty cake donuts. Very sweet but hey it stops me from eating more than one lol. If I'm ever craving a donut and I'm in the area I'd definitely stop by here, but wouldn't go out of my way. read more
Ordered delivery, and the time estimate was off by about 30 minutes, but the donuts were worth waiting for. Very elegant, very flavorful, and I want to stop by in shop to see all the donuts they offer. Sweetness was generally on point (not too sweet), except for the Passionfruit Pavlova. Any bite that contained the Passionfruit puree was overly sweet. It was also placed as a dollop in the middle, rather than spread out across the whole donut. Strawberry buttermilk did taste like strawberry. My go-to is the Old Fashioned and the texture of the cake was on point, would have liked a bit more glaze since the flavor of the cake was not strong. Choc-O-Lot were very chocolaty, would like for them to be darker (or maybe just have a dark chocolate option). Toasted Pina Colada was tropical due to the pineapple, and an appropriate amount of toasted coconut on top. read more

We stopped by Sidecar after lunch and picked up a half dozen. The place was really busy as expected for a Saturday afternoon. Staff was friendly and the place smelled incredible. After a short wait, we were up to order. They were out of the chocolate donut, but that allowed us to try some other ones we hadn't before. We brought the donuts home and enjoyed them that evening. Sidecar has been on my list for quite some time and so when I was in the area, they caught my attention. This Sidecar is located in a fairly big plaza, parking wasn't an issue. The shop itself is a bit small so I could see it getting crowded in prime time hours. There's a few tables and chairs outside. There were a few people ahead of me and more came trickling in on a Monday afternoon. I was excited to get a Yelp Check in offer so I took advantage. Customer service was great, super attentive and patient. With all the options in front of me, I couldn't quite decide what I wanted. Along with the 6 doughnuts I got, I ordered the Vietnamese Coffee. Sadly, I didn't capture the same experience 4/5 star reviewers felt about Sidecar. I wasn't satisfied or impressed with any of the doughnuts or the coffee. With so much doughnut and coffee places all over OC, I wouldn't visit Sidecar again. read more

I love Sidecar!!!! Huckleberry is by far my favorite and probably will always be my favorite. It's just SO good, iykyk. We stopped by to try their Strawberry Matcha donut and we were very happy that we only ordered one. I love a good Strawberry Matcha drink, but this donut was a hard no. Besides the strawberry as a garnish, I couldn't detect any strawberry flavor. It was basically a matcha donut and not a very pleasant one - I'll just leave it at that. I work at Sidecar and no, they are not safe for celiacs. They do not contain any gluten, but there is a chance for cross contamination as they are fried in the same oil as the regular donuts.
