I've known this spot has been around for a long time, and I noticed it's been receiving more and more attention. It's summer, so it's the perfect time to finally check this spot out. Parking: They're located in a high foot traffic plaza with a small parking lot so finding an open spot will be difficult. Ambiance/Environment: This is a quick grab-n-go location. No indoor seating. They have four outdoor tables. The donuts are displayed and labeled. Love the decor and vibes. Service: I was greeted immediately every time I entered. Everyone is courteous, quick, & efficient. Doughnuts & coffee: The donuts are surprisingly not overly sweet. Presentation is absolutely eye catching. Their flavors sound intimidating yet interestingly delicious, and it tastes even better. Their flavors sound drinks are a hit or miss. So far, I've only tried their mochas and lattes. Their drinks are sweet. If you prefer sweet drinks, then these are for you. Their cold foams could use some work bc it disappears after 20 min and lack some flavor. - S'mores Mocha (seasonal) - Brown Sugar Latte (seasonal) - Vanilla Latte (staple) - Donuts: Mango Sticky Rice, Potato Chip Streusel, Butter & Salt, Saigon Cinnamon Crumb Pricing: They're constantly offering seasonal donuts and drinks. Highly recommend downloading their rewards app. You'll get a welcome reward and many coupons.
Hands down one of the best donut shops around! I stopped by on the 4th of July and tried their summer specials--the Passion Fruit Pavlova donut and the S'mores Iced Mocha--and both were absolutely delicious. The staff is always warm and friendly, the donuts are incredibly fresh, soft, and full of flavor, and the coffee never disappoints. They also typically carry a Vegan and gluten friendly donut option. Whenever I'm in the OC, I have to stop by for a donut... or two... or three. Definitely a place that's worth the visit every time!
The summer seasonal doughnuts are back, some favs are definitely the passionfruit pavlova! The balance and freshness of this passionfruit doughnut is incredible! Tastes similar to freshly made sweet bread filled with custard/cream. Service is always friendly and quick, along with great vibes all around. Def recommend trying all the new summer seasonal offerings!
Been back to back to back still my fave donut shop. I hope the passion fruit one becomes a permanent menu item.
When I'm in Newport Beach or Costa Mesa, I always make a quick stop at Sidecar Doughnuts. Butter and Salt is our top favorite. In season is the Buttermilk Strawberry Doughnut, used fresh strawberries and cake like dough.
I ordered online the huckleberry donut and mango sticky rice donut. Quick service and it was ready in no time. I would highly recommend the hucklberry donut, the dough itself was delightful and not dry at all, it had a really great base flavor and the frosting itself added a great taste. Mango sticky rice was just whatever, it was bland and underwhelming, definitely stick to the basics. I would comeback again to try their other flavors. Just very pricy...
Friendly and welcoming staff, clean establishment. Some donut samples are offered and they will cut another flavor if you ask. Free donuts on your Bday month (we live that). They are a bit pricey as far as donuts go, however, most of the donuts are large so it feels like a better value. Free parking, good size coffee selections and they sell swag.
The donuts here are cool, fun, and unique flavors! but it is definitely on the pricey side. I paid ~$45 for a dozen. My experience with premium donuts have been poor, but these one still reminisce a classic donut texture and flavor which I appreciate greatly. The banana bread latte was more of just a straight banana flavor, but it was good if you're into that sorta stuff. Overall, it's a small shop with standing room only and outdoor seating. The staff are attentive and helped/managed a large group of 15-20 people easily. They also give free samples to try!
I'm not a huge doughnut connoisseur, but try to stop in to Sidecar when I'm in town, 2 or 3 times a year. Always very fresh and delicious. Essentially, if I'm going to eat a doughnut, it must be pretty spectacular and Sidecar never misses. Coffee drinks are very good. Limited outside only seating.
I'm a sucker for a good donut and Sidecar never disappoints! These a higher end donuts that have a more cake like consistency than your average donut. During my last visit, my husband and I shared the salted butter and blueberry cheesecake donuts, which were both amazing. We also ordered a cold brew, which complemented the donuts nicely. One thing to note is that prices here are steep--the two donuts and a coffee ended up being close to $20. Service here is friendly! It is a tiny shop that is more of a grab and go spot, but there a few seats in the front to enjoy your sweet treat if your inclined to have it there. Overall, I'd recommend checking out Sidecar if you haven't already!
I haven't been to Sidecar in years and this visit left me wondering why it took so long to come back. It was a bit pricey but I guess everything else is too, especially in OC. The samples of the chocolate and strawberry donuts were good, although I was not a fan of the strawberry, so I went with an old fashion glaze and a mocha. Nothing disappointed but I do wish they had a maple option without bacon or salt, just a fluffy maple like I had so many years ago. This is a small storefront with great customer service. There's a couple small tables outside to enjoy your donuts there, but most get it to-go. That's this critic's review, until next time, I'll be eating.
Really good! I've been here many times but I realized I've never reviewed this place. Of all times I've been here, it's no question a 5 star. The donuts were really fresh and hot when we got them. My wife loves the butter and salt one and it's absolutely perfect! The saltiness balances out with the richness and sweetness. I also ordered the golden hour grey, which was the seasonal flavor, and it was really unique. It was citrusy and light. Sidecar is definitely in it's own league and its tough to find other donuts to really compete with them. The store was pretty small with very limited seating at this location so it's more of a grab and go type of location. It's not too far from the beach though. Service was really efficient. Even if there was a line, it goes by quite quickly. It's worth it anyways!
Sidecar never ever misses and they have me hooked with their seasonal flavors. They have the best donuts, and I'm not even a donut person. I specifically LOVE their cake donuts. I could go on and on about them... seriously. This time we had to come try their collab with Cake Picnic, which was the golden hour grey donut. Let me tell you, it was bomb.com. The orange flavor was phenomenal and I have no notes. We also got the strawberry donut and hot chocolate with almond milk, both obviously very good as well. It was my first time getting the hot chocolate and I was honestly surprised with how yummy it was. It was not too chocolatey and not too milky. It was the perfect balance and the perfect pairing with the donuts.
I've never really understand the hype of Sidecar doughnuts. They are cool. The last time I went here was after dinner. We made a 20 minute drive. I was thankful they had gluten free options. I went for their madagascar vanilla beans and GF huckleberry donut. Both were okay but not any better than a typical cambodian donut spot. I do appreaciate sidecar makes them fresh and they have seasonal items. I do want to come back and try their passionfruit one. read more
I have wanted to try Sidecar for YEARS, and after 4 years of living in Orange County I finally tried it. Super upset I barely gave it a chance because it is AMAZING!!! My boyfriend tried the choc o lot and salted malted chocolate chip cookie dough, and I got the huckleberry and butter and salt flavors. They were all delicious, but I definitely recommend the huckleberry! Sweet and light, it doesn't feel too heavy at all. They are known for fresh ingredients and you can really taste that in them. They are a bit expensive but so worth it. I took my sister the next day, and she got the vegan blueberry flavor, and I tried the rainbow berry pop tart flavor. Sooooo good! It can be a little tough to find parking and the line can be long at times but don't let it discourage you. My go-to place for doughnuts now! read more
It's been a while since we visited any Sidecar location but what really attracted me was actually a TikTok and the fact that Sidecar only had passion fruit donuts through the end of February. We thought about ordering online ahead of time which is something I would suggest, especially on the weekend. When you arrive, there most likely will be a line out the door which goes across the parking lot so be considerate of the people in the area. There's actually a sign indicating where to line up. We waited probably about 10 or 12 minutes in line. They were limiting the amount of people inside. Service was super friendly. And along the way you could see what the items were to kind of expedite the process. We opted for a passion fruit doughnut and a bacon doughnut. Let me just tell you I wish the passion fruit donut was year-round. One of the best things I've had. And the bacon doughnut was also very good although I feel bad it's kind of a tired flavor overall. This is not a reflection on sidecar at all because we actually enjoyed the donut. We also had an iced latte which was delicious. Ironically, next-door is a pie place and we purchased a chicken pie which was probably one of the best we've ever had so check that out as well. There is a parking lot for the shopping center and some street parking but it actually can be a little difficult On a busier weekend. Masks required. read more
Sidecar is one of those places that I felt was a bit overhyped, but once I visited I could see what the hype is about. The line can get crazy because it's limited entry during the pandemic so the majority of customers are waiting outside if they didn't order in advance. The service was great as an associate actually came to the front door to open it for me to let me know I can enter and browse the fantastic donut selections. Decor is real hipster, easy to read menus, and a nice variety of donuts and descriptions in the main area. Donuts are definitely priced much higher than your typical pink donut shop (about $3-4 per donut) and I decided to give their butter & salt, old fashion, and salted malted chocolate chip cookie dough a go. The donuts are packed nicely in a box and it's definitely an Instagram worthy item. Butter & salt has that perfect balance of sweet and salty and you can definitely taste the quality in the donut and brown butter. Old fashion has some notable spices and reminded me of fall, and the salted malted chocolate chip cookie dough seems perfect for anyone with a sweet tooth. I was slightly disappointed in the Vietnamese coffee they offer, as it's priced over $5 and it's made with milk (it does have condensed milk as sweetener) and the associate did give me a heads up that it's more like a Vietnamese iced coffee latte. The coffee flavor overall was not bad but it's also not a typical Vietnamese iced coffee with just strong coffee and condensed milk. If you steer away from the viet coffee and go for the other menu selections, I'm sure this place will truly be worth it! read more
What more can I say that hasn't been said before? Their doughnuts are made in small batches throughout the day to ensure you have the freshest selection when you visit. Here's a couple I've tried over the years: Huckleberry - A crowd pleaser for sure. Right level of tartness. Maple Bacon - They're mostly known for cake doughnuts, but the yeast raised ones are good too. Satisfying mix of salty and sweet. Bacon bits on top were nicely crisp. Butter & Salt - Simple yet delicious. Saigon Cinnamon Crumb - All in the name, crumbly cinnamon-ny goodness. Sugar and spice and everything nice. Old Fashion - Delectable combination of nutmeg, cinnamon, and buttermilk. Pumpkin Cheesecake - Seasonal offering that has a crunchy exterior and a soft interior. A little drizzle on top to add some sweetness. Very moist. Choc-A-Lot - Indulging! Chocolate yeast ring with a chocolate glaze and topped with cocoa nibs. Recommended for any chocoholic. Vanilla Bean Glazed - Not your average Krispy Kreme doughnut! A classic done right. Salty Caramel - Perfectly balanced as all things should be. Red Velvet - Another special seasonal offering, admittedly one of their weaker options. Tasty, but I didn't think the flavor was true to the name. *** 4.5 STARS *** Freshly made cake donuts with unique flavors. I've been to Sidecar a handful of times now and each time I have left satisfied due to the quality of their donuts. They specialize in cake donuts but they do have a few yeast donuts. Use their app, Instagram or their website to check which flavors are in rotation as they have a permanent menu with customer favorites + seasonal selections! Personal favorites: Blueberry Maple Donut + Butter & Salt Donut Butter & Salt (Cake Donut): A MUST try if you go to Sidecar. The cake donuts at Sidecar are light and not dense, the salt in the brown butter glaze complements the sweetness of the cake donut. Unique flavor profile, but recommend for those who don't like overly sweetened desserts! Blueberry Maple Donut (Cake Donut): Recently added to their permanent menu, but I enjoyed this flavor profile more than their Huckleberry donut. The fresh batch made the cake donut nicely fluffy and the addition of fresh blueberries throughout the cake added a nice tartness to balance the maple syrup. I was worried that the donut would be overly sweet due to the maple syrup, but it added a nice deeper flavor profile without being overly sweet. I found this more enjoyable than the Huckleberry which relies more on the glaze to taste the Huckleberry flavor, whereas the blueberry flavor was dispersed throughout the donut itself. Honestly this place is a little overrated! Our experience there wasn't awful nor amazing. The line was long but it goes by quick, and it's extremely hard to find parking. The doughnuts are incredibly dense, which some might think is great but you feel a little sick afterwards. We also ordered a latte and it wasn't very good. If you are in the area, you have to stop by Sidecar Doughnuts. This was the best doughnut experience I have ever had. Normally, I wouldn't be a massive doughy it fan. But I realize that was because I was eating sub-par doughnuts. If you are there during pumpkin season you have to try the pumpkin pie spice everything. That doughnut was the nicest doughnut I've ever had. I would drive back to Costa Mesa JUST to get that again. It was delicious. We also tried their classic, the huckleberry and the maple bacon doughnuts. The classic and huckleberry were lovely. They have great Covid protocols in place. Screens up indoor. For the record, I rate this 4.2 stars. After being told that this is the best doughnut place, I just had to go. My first impressions when walking into the store is, "Damn, this place looks so fancy" and I was not wrong. Their unique doughnuts like "Butter and Salt", "Saigon Cinnamon Crumb", and "Huckleberry"? I have never heard of these flavors but it looks so good. I have never been to this location but I've stolen a few bites from my friends doughnut when he brought it with him. He recommends the butter and salt so that is what I got along with the saigon cinnamon crumb, and a few other doughnuts. My full order was: 2 saigon cinnamon crumb, 2 butter and salt, 1 old fashion, 1 sprinkle doughnut(I think it was the Huckleberry?) and 1 cinnamon roll. My ratings of the doughnuts out of 5 where 5/5 is the best and 1/5 is the worst: Saigon Cinnamon Crumb - 4/5; It basically tastes like a snickerdoodle, can't complain with that. Butter and Salt - 5/5; EASILY 5/5! It's a nice combination of sweet to saltiness. A weird flavor but the more I ate it, the better it is. Old Fashion - 3/5; It's pretty mid. It reminded me of the doughnuts I ate in elementary school (I liked em but tasted similar) Huckleberry - 3/5; Don't really know what I expected, it looks weird and tastes a bit strange. Cinnamon Roll - 3.5/5; It's not anything special but goddamn it was soft. Although, everything that the doughnuts have in common is that everything was SUPER fluffy. It was hard on the outside (in a good way) and soft and fluffy on the inside. I think that's the big thing that separates this place and other donut places. The things that contribute to this review being 4.2/5 stars is the pricing, that price is no joke. I spent like 30 bucks on 6 doughnuts and 1 roll. That would be half the price at a different place but the main thing is that they have fluffy doughnuts and are different from other places. I would definitely go here again but would not order as many doughnuts. I would order like at most 1-2 for myself because these doughnuts are so heavy. Get here early or on a day that they wouldn't be busy! For COVID, they are letting about two party groups inside at a time which means a good amount of waiting outside if there is a line. This was my first time trying this place and the donuts we chose were all goooooooood! My favorite was the all chocolate donut (yes, I know it's basic) but it was darn out a great donut lol! I feel like you can't go wrong with any of them but do note that these are going to come with a price. We purchased half a dozen and we were hitting almost 25 or so dollars. Yikes right, but trust me they are worth it. Also, do try their fresh brewed coffee! Start a change and try something other than Starbucks because sidecar's coffee was bold and it had a kind of oak-ey taste that went well with a vanilla creamer at home. All in all I say that this place is a must try when you're in the area. There's ample amount of parking and the staff are really nice. read more

Also tried the seasonal blueberry champagne brioche and the doughnut itself was okay but the topping was really delish. I love this place. My wife and I will literally plan trips out that direction around coming here for some donuts. Additionally we are always checking out their seasonal donuts. Speaking of speciality donuts they do GLUTEN FREE donuts. It is nearly impossible to find a place that does good and truly gluten-free donuts. Sidecar Doughnuts knocks it out of the park with GF donuts. We ordered a couple especially packs when they're offered. We did a Father's Day donut package that was a big hit. You can also grab a box of just the speciality donuts if you want to just get after those fresh and tasty seasonal goodies. For this month they're gluten-free one was a specialty blueberry and I tell you it was blueberry and all the best ways. Do you have a couple of ways to order online and do pick up. During this pandemic it's been the best way to go. He skip the line and waiting around people you come up can you get your donuts from the tent outside and then you're enjoying them in no time. Otherwise there is typically a line out the door because these donuts I made fresh and everyone knows they are great find. Generally, I'm not a huge donut fan, but Sidecar was worth the calories! Extra bonus for a reeeeally good cuppa coffee (latte)! Tried waaay more donuts than what the fam could eat in one sitting but everything sounded SO good! The yeast donuts are fluffy, the cake donuts are just perfect (not overly dense), and neither are overwhelmingly sweet. I've gone a couple times now and the family favorites are: - Pumpkin Pie & Everything Spice: for as "busy" as it looks, it is not crazy tasting. It's fluffy in texture with just the right balance of flavors - Apple Fritter: Papa Bear is a big fan of fritters in general. He was a big fan of this one. We're sad this is only available on Fridays (hm, maybe it's just as well...for our arteries!) - Old Fashioned: best old fashioned donut ever. I was really impressed with the taste and texture of their cake-donuts We had quite a few others which were all good too. Everything is a great balance of flavor and texture. I was super excited to try this place, but it barely met my expectations and I honestly think this place is overrated. For perspective, I am not much of a donut fan to begin with, and I found the donuts to be way too dense and the flavor I chose was fairly one note. I got the Salted Malted Cookie Dough, and it was just a chocolate chip brick with mushy "malted" cookie dough and "malted" fudge drizzle. If they didn't say it in the description, I would not have known it was malt anything. And, it was not even a donut. The texture was just like eating a plain ol' muffin. I was very disappointed. I could have just gone to Sprouts and gotten a chocolate chip muffin for like a buck that's better quality than this place serves. My friend ordered the seasonal strawberry buttermilk, and due the the fact his was still warm, it was much better than mine. Overall, the selection was way too small, the donuts too dense and I would not bother to return. I don't normally like cake donuts but Sidecar cake donuts seem to be the exception. Their donuts are made fresh every hour so it's always hot & fresh when you buy them. The cake donuts here are so light, fluffy on the inside which contrasts so perfectly with the crisp fresh exterior. Whereas when I typically think of cake donuts, they lean more dense and one-dimensional texture wise. I've enjoyed all the flavors I've tried and love that they have rotating seasonal flavors in addition to their everyday staples. Raised donuts are also quite good and definitely worth the try, just don't sleep on these cake donuts. read more
I tried blueberry cornbread donut, and it was great! it was very different from regular donut! I didn't get the pancake version to compare; I wish I did! I got a latte as well, and it was perfect. Went so well with the donut! Parking was only a little hard to find, but I had to drive to the other side (where the market is at) in order to find a spot. read more

We actually came to get some pie next door and saw a line. Figured we would take a look and see what the whole fuss was about. They offered free samples of donughts. Very delicious but more of a pound cake kind of doughnuts. We ordered birthday cake, old fashion, blueberry, chocolate, and cinnamon sugar crumble. They make a batch every hour and so I was able to snag the cinnamon sugar crunch right out of the oven. It was still warm and so good. I also like a chocolatey one too it was really chocolate but not to the point were you get sick. Inside was very cute and there was a line through out our stay. There are limited outside seating. Perk is if you check in with Yelp you get a free hot coffee. Couldn't change it to cold coffee read more
I don't think I could come back to a regular doughnut ever since I found Sidecar! The doughnuts are always fresh, delicious, and unique. The doughnut comes with many variations of dough and out of the box flavors that you couldn't think of! Some of my favorites are Salty Caramel, Butter & Salt and Bourbon Pecan (seasonal). The doughnut is definitely a gourmet doughnut that cost $5-$6 a piece. But, it's totally worth it. I guarantee you! read more
There's a good variety of unique donut options. So far, my favorite is the old fashion donut and the butter and salt. The donuts have good textures and toppings. I'm always excited to try the seasonal donut options. I recommend all donut lovers to enjoy the noms regardless if it's for breakfast or dessert. I might be in the minority here but I think Sidecar is just a-ok. I've been a couple of times now and while the donuts are fresh, fluffy and cakey - I don't think the flavors are really special and on my last visit the bottoms of the donuts were a bit burnt. I think this might be an issue with me since I like donuts of the more yeasty variety and am partial to toppings or fillings. There aren't very many donuts like that at Sidecar and they instead focus on delivering a high quality donut with a glaze or crumb as the flavor. These glazes while somewhat creative - are a bit lacking in flavor and the translation seems a bit delicate at times and doesn't really shine through. Pros: - Presentation here is everything. These donuts are super photogenic. - The ingredients are quality and the donuts are fresh Cons: - Like other donuts - these donuts are fried and can come out a bit burnt depending on the day - Parking is kinda hard in this plaza at times - The donuts are on the spendy side One thing I haven't been able to try is the eggs benedict - which one of my friends swears by. I'd definitely be back to try that as it is more up my street than their glazed donuts. If you love delicately flavored glazed donuts that are fluffy and cakey - this is definitely worth a try. read more
Incredible donuts!!! This place deserves to be called the Hermes of donut shops because their creations are literally designer donuts. Samples are provided which are incredible, seasonal flavors come and go every month, and the dough quality is above average. The only thing is that it is quite expensive which earns it the title of designer doughnuts. Definitely not your typical donut shop, but if you're celebrating a special occasion or just want something extravagant, this is the place for you. read more

I love Sidecar Doughnuts & Coffee! I love that they cook their donuts fresh every hour. They practiced social distancing at its finest. Two parties are only allowed at a time to go inside the shop. Outside they have markers to allow 6 ft distancing between customers. As you step in, you are welcomed with the different aromas from the donuts and freshly cup of coffee! They had a great selection of donuts. Today we selected to get my favorite Huckleberry donut, chocolate and cookie dough! Everything was impeccable and rich in flavors! read more

Are your gluten-free donuts safe for celiacs (gluten allergy)?
I work at Sidecar and no, they are not safe for celiacs. They do not contain any gluten, but there is a chance for cross contamination as they are fried in the same oil as the regular donuts.

Are the gluten free donuts offered all day or do need to go early in the morning to score some?
All day erday every 30 minutes (give or take) there's a fresh batch, depends on how fast they get sold.
Are their doughnuts vegetarian friendly (is the oil used a vegetable oil or is it beef tallow, lard, etc.) ? Second, is there cross-contamination between the bacon and non-bacon doughnuts (is the bacon fried in the same fryers as the donuts, etc.)?
