Everything they make is spectacular! My fabulous cousin knows my love for donuts and surprised me one day by taking me to her favorite local donut spot. Being the experienced foodie I am, I had minimal expectations for a random donut shop in Costa Mesa. The second I opened the doors I was smacked in the nostrils with their berrylicious frosting and completely humbled with tears in my eyes and wonder in my heart. I wanted one of everything and so did everyone in line. This place was Legendary and all who were in it's presence were cast under it's magical spell. I ordered the Huckleberry, a variety of donut holes, and a small soy latte. My cousin got the same with a cinnamon crumb. All very amazing and the coffee paired perfectly with the sweet donut bites. The service was good and quick, parking I hear is generally a trouble but not upon my visit, and outside seating was scarce but we cozied up on a bench in the sun. My family and I are huge Alton Brown fans, and since this was his only listing of California recommended donut, I had to check Sidecar Doughnuts out with my sister. Alton Brown recommended the donut holes, but they sadly, not on the menu. But there was a wide variety of other donut selections available. They even have gluten-free and special seasonal donuts that change everyday and every month, respectively. Donuts ordered: 1. Huckleberry (4/5): The Huckleberry is what almost everyone orders. It is the donut with the magenta speckled icing, and is glazed on top of a blueberry cake donut. Delish. I actually tasted the blueberry cake donut more than the actual glaze itself, which is the reason for -1 star from the flavor. However, the glaze is actually a glaze and not a donut dipped in a sugar bath. 2. Salt and Butter (5/5): Do not underestimate this flavor and the looks of this brown, plain looking donut. I absolutely love the salt and butter donut. When I first bit into this donut, it was not what I was expecting at all! This is actually a sweet donut, but with butter, butter so flavorful but not heavy, so much so, that it tastes like warm french vanilla. The salt and butter donut is also a cake donut, for those who have their stance on cake vs. risen donuts. There was an expected wait (maybe around 30 minutes) for Mother's Day on a Sunday at around 11:15am, which was not bad. I might be back on a normal day, since I wanted to try the Maple Bacon but the display was empty on this day. The consistency is thicker than a normal donut, but the flavor is SO good. Other donuts that I have had from here and enjoyed are: maple bacon, vanilla glaze, red velvet, pineapple upside down. They use fresh ingredients which makes me feel better about myself when I eat them haha. The employees are always super nice and helpful. They will put out a few samples for you to try! Nothing beats hot fresh huckleberry donuts. A Saturday trip to pick up Sidecar did involve some waiting but most great food experiences are sharpened by a little anticipation. The store was Social distancing appropriate with the line spaced outside. Only a couple groups at a time inside where the heavenly fragrance made it really hard not to want to buy one of each. You get an extra donut for every dozen you purchase so we got to eat a huckleberry before we made it back to the car. At $4/donut, a dozen will set you back some and may make John Travolta wonder aloud what a $4 dollar donut tastes like. However, the appreciative faces of the people at the lucky party you are bringing them to make it worth every dollar. read more

This place is very popular, and it's worth a visit if you like doughnuts. We tried three, plus two coffees (vintage blend and iced caramel latte). The donuts: butter & salt, chocolate, and maple bacon. The butter & salt is easily my favorite of the three, no question. First of all, I prefer cake donuts to yeast/raised donuts, and their cake donuts are amazing. The butter & salt looks deceptively plain, but packs so much flavor with the brown butter glaze. If you're a fan of cake donuts, this is a flavor you should not miss. The chocolate donut is a well-done example of a chocolate yeast donut. If you like yeast donuts and you like actual chocolate, you will like this donut. It is not your average "99% sugar, 1% cacao" tasting cheap donut. The maple bacon donut was also good. Not overly sweet, and a good balance of bacon and glaze. The vintage blend was good. My husband thought their coffee quality was acceptable, which means they probably have pretty good coffee. My caramel latte was not overly sweet, though I can't say it was particularly memorable. The line was a mess, though. Even though we ordered ahead, there were just too many people and no one was manning the "weekends pickup booth" so there was a bit of a "uhhh how do we do this" when we first arrived. I still stand by my statement that Sidecar makes the best damn doughnuts on the planet and I've had many a-doughnut, I promise. To preface, I really like buttermilk/old fashion donuts because I like denser cake doughnut textures (so if you've had a Krispy Kreme donut, not that). My favorite here is still the butter & salt ($3.50 - Vanilla bean cake with brown butter glaze and fleur de sel.) it's so simple with the perfect smidge of savory and sweet. The old fashion was good too but just a little more cinnamon-y & sweeter. The Huckleberry ($3.75 - Oregon huckleberry cake doughnut with huckleberry glaze) is also pretty fantastic. The inside is speckled like a blueberry muffin, but has a bit more acidity. I also got to try the Basil Egg Benedict ($6 - Our Malasada style doughnut filled with poached egg, Benton's ham, and a house made basil hollandaise sauce. *Served daily until 1PM or while supplies last!) - so unique! I usually don't like hollandaise but it worked so well with the malasada donut. I've never had a legit malasada donut, but they remind of beignets. Compared to Blue Star, I feel like Sidecar has a little bit more for everyone and overall more palette pleasing. The line is just as long as it is when they opened 3-4 years ago, so plan accordingly. They have a good selection on donuts and even have some vegan ones! The donuts were arranged in a pretty long box. The donuts were good and tasted so fresh! I hate to be the odd man out giving this place only two stars, but hear me out..... I am a lover of donuts... A connoisseur if you will. I love them; obsessed even. They are my favorite treat to eat. The only good donut was the huckleberry. That one was awesome actually. The buttermilk was second, but the buttermilk at Seaside was incredible. Everything else at Sidecar was average or below. I hate to say that because when an establishment has this high of stars AND reviews, I ALWAYS love the place. Sidecar was unfortunately the exception. I even had three kids with me and THEY didn't eat more than 3/4 of one donut. The hubs wasn't impressed either :( It wasn't just me. Red velvet-no flavor. Cherry-average. Small little store than carries a big reputation. Coming to the OC location is a little troublesome as the parking is kinda tight. The store itself is also pretty small as there's no seats inside but a couple tables outside. I've yet to visit the LA location but I'm sure it's gotta be more spacious. They have seasonal flavors but I am not sure how often they change. Some classic flavors that we always come back to get are the Butter and Salt and the Huckleberry. It's pretty neat to see them restock the donuts and watch them prep new ones through the glass windows. I always like the rustic, woodsy, hipster-esque vibe they give out. They limit the number of customers into the store by doing like 2 parties at a time, so we probably waited around 20 min, which isnt too bad. We got 2 seasonal donuts and 1 regular donut (berry tart, strawberry creme, and salted malted cookie dough, respectively) along with a vanilla latte and everything came out to be almost $18. Pretty pricey for three donuts and a really small coffee, so -1 star, but everything was really good. All the donuts were really tasty but very large and thicccccc which I'm not used to, but I thoroughly enjoyed each donut, and the size does make up for the expensive price point ($3-4/per donut). I do not recommend buying a dozen for yourself because these are not small and fluffy like krispy kreme or a family owned donut shop, because it is a lot of food!!!! ill definitely come back to try their other seasonal flavors, and even share a seasonal box with some friends because it seems like the best deal here too! read more
