Health Conscious "California Style" Diner The Silver Diner was in Rio, a beautiful upscale shopping plaza in Gaithersburg, MD. The menu was very health conscious with lots of healthy choices. We had baked cod and a hamburger, which were both delicious. Service was excellent. Manager was a bit tired and worn out from his facial expressions each time he turned away from the guests he seated. One look for the guests, followed by his true feelings, it appeared to me. Average meal was about $25, though there were some other options. For example, I came in wanting a tuna fish wrap or sandwich, but they had just removed that from the menu! They replaced it with a fancy non meat burger with miso or some such. Good choices were fancier than the usual 50's Silver Diner all American fare which used to be at the Lakeside Mall nearby before the mall closed. We ate outdoors which was delightful. read more

A 5 star service from Chloe, a lovely young lady w a warm and welcoming smile. We have not dined at this location before and would highly recommend it to anyone who has not been at Rio. I was craving chocolate cake so I Ubered it from Silver Diner and ended up getting one slice of their double chocolate triple-layer cake & smith island cake. Double chocolate triple layer cake with white chocolate drizzle: (you can get both white chocolate & chocolate drizzle) but I only got white chocolate. I'm not much of a chocolate person but this is by far my favorite!!! Not too rich/heavy. Also, got low-fat vanilla ice cream and it is uh-mazing!!! Smith island cake: the photo on UberEats is misleading. I thought the cake would look like what was shown,but it was actually vanilla cake with raspberry and I think lemon in the cake with chocolate drizzling. We came here before our movie last week and it was a nice time. The atmosphere is always very lively and the service we received was prompt and they came to check and see how everything was going. My girlfriend got the chicken noodle soup and I got the stuff apple French toast. I got a virgin drink that was like a mojito but with Sprite. It was a good experience and we love the milkshakes here and have for years! I've enjoyed many different dishes at this location and the one in Rockville. They are always on top of things food and service wise. This was definitely a welcomed addition to the area. I've enjoyed the Silver Diner franchise in the past, but this visit was less than stellar. We came for an early dinner. The patio area was crowded but indoor seating was pretty empty. We opted for indoor seating because we were in a time crunch and were told service would be faster. We were seated immediately and the hostess helped us pull out the table so that we had ample room. We were greeted by our waitress shortly afterward. Our waitress had a pleasant demeanor, but her lack of experience in the industry was evident. I understand that there are hiring challenges in the restaurant industry. This Silver Diner's solution is to hire high schoolers. Unfortunately, the result is that their workforce's customer service skills are a work in progress. We ordered four entrees, two of which were the same dish. When the food was brought out, only three dishes were served - one of the duplicate entrees was missing. Our dishes were not all brought out at the same time, and it was delivered by kitchen staff different from our waitress, who had no idea what we ordered or how many plates were supposed to come out. This decentralization was troublesome because it decreased accountability. We had to flag our waitress down after it was clear that the last plate was not coming, and she had no idea. When the waitress came over, she immediately recognized the problem and went to go check on the missing dish. Though she was apologetic, little was done to remedy the situation. The entree was not expedited or supplemented (it seemed like they took the normal amount of time to make the dish instead of rushing it out), it was not discounted, no explanation was given, and a manager did not follow-up. Based on my observation, the manager was not made aware of the situation - the missing dish was brought out, so in the young waitress's mind - problem solved! The whole situation was frustrating for the table because by the time the food was brought out, the rest of the table was basically done eating, so we ended up taking the late entree to-go. After soliciting an explanation, the waitress explained that while she correctly inputted the two entrees, the kitchen only saw one. The lack of attention to detail in the kitchen is especially worrisome if any modifications are requested for dishes. The table next to us also experienced an above-average delay - it took a while for a waiter to come over to greet them. When a staff member finally approached, they gave a spiel that the delay was due to the transition from lunch to dinner and staff's confusion of who would pick up the table... more of the learning curve showing. As for my dish, I ordered the classic eggs Benedict. The eggs were nicely poached, but the dish was completely lacking in seasoning. Fortunately, the condiments were already on the table so that we didn't have to inconvenience anyone. OK I visited here with a large party on a Saturday afternoon and they were able to seat us. We had different dishes and for the most part they kept everything straight. There was a delay on one meal but they were on top of it and let us know. To look at the place has sort of an art deco feel to it and the menu is like Applebees but better with the average price of a meal being $15-$17 and those were for good sized portions. Our party had a mix of chicken sandwiches. Turkey, tuna and even some vegetarian dishes and everyone was satisfied. Service was quick and friendly. I had the triple pickle fried chicken sandwich and while the chicken was good I didn't find it being particularly picklish but hey that's just my view and no one disliked what they had. For drink, got an Iced Tea. Service was very slow, even though there weren't too many people sitting out in the patio area outside. Did not get refills on water or soft drinks. Also did not get any napkins. For some reason, the ice cream and brownie took around 20-25 minutes to get to our table. I mean, we didn't order any entrees, just 2 of the same Brownie Ice Creams, so not sure why it took a while... When we did get them, the brownie wasn't warmed up enough, tasted kind of hard. Ice Cream was alright. Noticed the waiter was talking to some customer or somebody and didn't pay attention while we wanted to request for our check. On Sunday my wife and I had one of the worst meals we've ever had anywhere at the Silver Diner at Rio in Gaithersburg, MD. It was terrible from the virtually non-existent service to the uninteresting grilled cheese sandwich that came with a handful of fries that had the texture of having been leftover from another customer, but the fried shrimp were even drier, and completely flavorless. When I complained about the shrimp to the waiter when he eventually showed up again, his answer was "What do you expect in a diner?!" Where I come from, diners have great service and do a good job of the few or many dishes that they serve, and Silver Diner was like that when they opened in Rockville on 355 years ago. I have mixed feelings about this place. I've eaten here at least three times and each time the service is either a hit or miss. One time, I think no one even saw us sitting at our table during dinner. Must have taken 20 minutes to get someones attention. Another time, the waiter was very efficient and refilled my drinks many times. Guess roll the dice and hope for the best. The food was generally good! Expect large portions. My little girl enjoys eating here, with a large kids menu. The cobb salad, omelette, corn beef hash all hit the spot. Nothing to wow about, yet wasn't a let down. Only disappointment was the dry smith island cake (don't order it!). I think the steak was the best entree we've eaten, if you can believe that. This place is large, but sure does get crowded. I wish they had the mini jukeboxes on each booth, like the Rockville location. Large outdoor seating, which is a plus and a good size bar that also opens outside too. It is a welcomed addition to Gaithersburg, as there are really no other diners i can think of in this area. So, when friends invited us to try out Silver Dinner in Rio, I was not enthusiastic to go there. Even though I had no big expectations, I was pleasantly surprised. This location has delicious food compared to the Rockville location. Portions are big and kids' meals were delicious. I would say when we ordered fries for our son in Rockville, it was always over oily (too much), another time they brought us over-fried fries (dark brown, almost black). Brunch food was delicious! Coffee was good! Kids meals were delicous! waiting time was 10-15 min on Saturday rush hour. I would definitely come back soon even though we have to drive 20 min from Rockville. read more

Some things have been good while others complete misses, rounding out to an overall 3.5 stars but giving 3 stars because of my most recent visit. In my most recent visit, I got the chicken & waffles with an additional topping of strawberries-- the chicken had absolutely no pickle taste and tasted similar to a frozen chicken cutlet from a grocery store. Ironically, I had gotten the same order around this location's grand opening and it was so much better with the chicken actually being crispy and juicy. My corn and crab chowder was very good; standard recipe with nothing unusual and no garnish. My 1/2 caprese sandwich was a mess. Tasty, but fell apart and had to be eaten with a fork - couldn't get a bite of all the flavors together which is what was intended. Need to rework this or take it off the menu. Dining companion's burger was fine, but other companion's club sandwich was also a mess and had to be eaten with a fork. Her 1/2 Caesar was nothing special. Definitely the best dish was sweet potato fries which were cooked well and delicious. Absolutely love this place! They do such an amazing job ensuring the safety of customers (doing contact tracing, wiping down menus, glass partitions between booths, etc). Service is very attentive too. Re: food, the Bays Benedict is a must!! It's a maryland version of eggs benedict, with crab cake and old bay seasoning. It's so yummy and unique tasting! The banana french toast was great too, but a little bit too sweet for my taste, especially since theres chocolate chips, caramel drizzle and vanilla bean cream. Definitely come here!! There isn't really any ambiance to speak of; it's a big, roomy restaurant. Our visits have been in the morning and it wasn't crowded, so it wasn't noisy. The diner food is good, if a little on the heavy side. This time I had the oatmeal and tempeh bacon. I thought the oatmeal was tasteless - maybe it's the brand they serve? I usually get the huevos rancheros which never disappoints, but this time I got the steak and eggs and the steak was dry! The waffle was great and crisp. The watermelon mimosa is always great. My Middle School son and I were in the area and stopped by the Silver Diner as he's not exactly an adventurous eater. It took forever for the server to take our order and get our meal, which was incomplete. I asked for the brown rice my son ordered and they said it was "coming out," so 5 minutes later I asked someone else about it and finally it was brought out, a tiny rectangular plate with three fork-fulls of brown rice. His burger was fine, and the fries were limp. I had the Lemony Humus Salad, with a piece of nearly raw salmon. It was a thoroughly negative experience, and then it took forever to get the check. I let Silver Diner know and their "Guest Relations" department apologized and sent a voucher for 2 entrees but only for a 30-day period, and we're not often near a Silver Diner. A manager from this location nicely called me and asked how things were, I mentioned the expiring vouchers, and she said they'll honor them indefinitely, and she was great. When I mentioned this to "Guest Relations," she corrected the Manager and said this was incorrect, it was not "Corporate Policy" and that I have to talk to the "General Manager" of the location (who I'm sure is not there at all times) to see if they want to honor an expired voucher. So we show up and take our chances? I threw away the vouchers and you can truly get better service from the DMV. read more

When I moved here Aug 2021 this was my favorite place. The online app offers a lot of free perks and discounts at first. But lately I find the menu tired/boring after a year - even though they change a few things seasonally. The chicken pot pie is good but I do not care for the flavored (Graham cracker?) crust vs a regular pie crust. The cod is good but I was disapointed by the small let's call it petit portion size. Best items for me are the Shrimp scampi pasta, chicken wings, and shakes. Burgers & fries are fair/good.
