Something bad has happened to this place. Service was always a bit slow, but with an Army of wait staff, you could always get someone's attention. We ate here yesterday for lunch with my two small children and it will be the last time. It took over 45 minutes to get an order of pancakes and when they arrived, they were cold- not warmish, but COLD. Our server was clueless and we didn't see him once after he took our order. I'm not the type to send food back. I would have asked to speak to the manager, but we were already there over an hour and with two small kids- that's past our limit. Maybe this place is meant for the older crowd who have all day to read their papers and don't care about when or if their food comes out. We won't be back. read more

I've tried to eat here twice in the past year, the last time was last night. Unfortunately, this particular Silver Diner has a foul odor that permeates the entire restaurant. My wife thinks it smells like old mop water that keeps getting reused, month after month. To me, it smells like warm, moist, very intense body odor. Seriously, it was so pungent last night that we had to leave right after being seated. To be fair to the chain, I've been to the Silver Diner on Ox Road near Fair Lakes countless times, and everything there looks and smells very clean, and the food is very good. This was our first encounter with this particular franchise, and my wife and I were initially expecting a very corporate dining experience, but we were floored with the level of service provided by our waiter Marquis. He was incredibly genuine and helpful in every context, going as far as to hang up our jackets for us and walking us out of the restaurant so that he could hold the door for us when we were ready to leave. The food was very well prepared and the kitchen totally understands the concept of a rare steak, cooking it perfectly. I think I wouldn't have left a review if it had just been the food alone, but Marquis was such an incredibly good server, I just had to let this business know how awesome he is as an asset to their organization. Loved the food. The turkey was cooked to perfection and the sauce was yummy yummy yummmy !! We tried some of the chef's specials and was worth it. The kids had fun with the online jukebox. The only thing which was the seating, the cabins could have been some what bigger and also the tables have too much stuff on it apart from the jukebox machine. We had to cram in ourselves. read more

When I asked for my salad ahead of by food, our server didn't even remember I ordered a salad...remind you now this is AFTER we had to wait. She just didn't seem to care. I have been going to this place since i was in elementary school and its only been getting better with the years while also remaining the same in a sense of good customer service and really good food. Perfect place for a korning breakfast or a late night spot to get food of any sorts. Nowhere near as good as I was told! We went there for brunch today and I was quite disappointed in the food. The bacon was extremely over cooked to the point it crumbled when I went to pick it up. I got steak and eggs, and it turned out to be shoe leather and eggs! So tough! Eggs were great and cooked exactly as asked. Their mimosas are phenomenal, but not to the point that I would pay $9 again (price was not on table card). Doubtful that we will return. IHOP is a much better deal all around. read more

This is our team's go-to. Why... Because of all the healthy options! I'm a fan of the local produce and bison meat options. Plus we often roll in big groups and they are always accommodating. My mom likes this place and that's why we went today. Every time I go I'm overwhelmed by how mediocre the place is and today was no different. We went and were seated fairly quickly. I looked at the enormous menu and the one item I wanted (a chicken sandwich with fries) actually wasn't an option, so I decided on a burger that was alright and proceeded to sit in my stomach like a weight for the rest of the day simply refusing to digest. On top of this our server was horrific. The people who were seated after us got drinks and placed their order before our server even acknowledged our presence. I only think he came by because I started waving at other servers like a lunatic going "hey are you our server, can we get some service here". When he came he was nonchalant and attending to his older tables needs, telling us he will be there in a second. My mother swears he was on drugs and his lack of attention was because he was taking frequent drug breaks during our meal, if it wasn't for his limp I wouldn't have tipped him a dime. I'd love to say I wouldn't go back, but my mom like's their patty melt. I'm thinking of learning how to make it, as a way of not giving them anymore of my money, or more importantly my time. read more

Marquis was our server and the reason for the five stars. We were celebrating my son's birthdays and had the bday certificates for a free kids entree and dessert. Marquis was very friendly, polite, and professional. He shook our hands which I wouldn't recommend during flu season but he was too nice to refuse. We went with his recommendations of the steak and fish tacos which were pretty average. My fish tacos came with a pretty funky salad which was overwhelmed with salt and sugar. I didn't like it. The boys enjoyed their Mac n cheese, chicken teriyaki, and Belgian waffles. They brought out a bday dessert with candles for my kids to blow out. Very nice finishing touch. Marquis walked us out to the door and gave my boys toy trucks and told us about the Tuesday special for kids. The food isn't good enough for me to frequent but the service made up for it. Is it just me, or do others who read these posts notice that there are a lot of unhappy people who enjoy posting? I have lived in Springfield, VA. longer than the SIlver Diner has been here. We have eaten there from time to time and have NEVER had an issue with this place. The food has always been good, the servers excellent, and if we've had a problem with an order, it was taken care of. Never have I had bad food, fake anything, spoiled meat, and if you think the bacon tastes different from the store bought kind that has chemicals in it., well it tastes different because it does not contain chemicals. We have eaten bad food for so long in this country that good food is on longer recognizable. I have had no complaints so far with this restaurant. I don't doubt that those who complain have their reasons, but some folks are just plain never going to be happy with anything and would complain no matter where they ate. I can imagine these same people eating in a country inn in France or some other place in Europe, and finding the same fault. Silver Diner you are my friend! read more

we had breakfast there last week. I ordered waffles. hubby ordered something with cheese all over the eggs. I asked the waitress repeatedly not to bring the waffles cold to me. guess what? she brought them cold! I sent them back to be warmed up and she brought be back toasted cold waffles. the manager was watching and brought me new waffle's were warm. he also brought me melted butter. he saved the day. ordering and serving hot waffles should not be rocket science. the coffee is bitter and terrible. The food here has always been good, but the service used to be much better. My wife and I came on a Wednesday morning for what is probably our last time. The restaurant was less than half full but the service was still terribly slow. We ordered at 9:18 and after 38 minutes, we had to track down our waitress to inquire about our order. She said that she asked her manager to come by, but that person never showed up. After 44 minutes we finally got our food. If you have a mountain of available time to wait for your breakfast then this is the place. read more

I've eaten here several times in the last couple of months while on business travel in the area. I've tried a number of different menu items and haven't really been disappointed by any so far. The menu offers a large variety of items from breakfast, sot salads, sandwiches, dinners (including lower calorie options that are quite good), you name it. I used the delivery option offered through yelp, which may or may not have direct affiliation with this restaurant, but, after waiting an hour and a half for our order, it was wrong. I called the restaurant about it immediately and all they said was that there was nothing they could do about it because as soon as the delivery company comes to pick it up it's completely "out of their hands". My friend and I have eaten at Silver Diner for many years, usually at the Springfield location once or twice a month. We've never had a bad meal there, the service is usually good, and since we're over 65, we enjoy our senior discounts. The major problem we've encountered there are the small jukeboxes located at each booth--often they don't work and we end up losing a quarter. The problem seems to becoming more noticeable of late. Although we normally get our quarter back from our server or the manager, there seems to be a recent reluctance of the restaurant to even refund any lost money. At our last visit there on June 22, my friend put a quarter in the large jukebox near the entrance since we've been told it's a more reliable machine. After waiting for over an hour and not hearing the requested song play and receiving our check, I mentioned to our server about the problem. He tried to override the jukebox by using a key to play the record but was unsuccessful. He never offered to refund us our quarter. As we were leaving, another patron from a nearby booth noticing our situation, came over to us and gave us a quarter. Although we refused, she wouldn't accept "No" for an answer. We dealt with a similar incident just a few weeks before at the same restaurant. My friend put a quarter in the jukebox at our booth and after not hearing the song, we went through the same hassle of getting our quarter back. We finally got a quarter from a different server when I asked to see the manager. During our recent visits, I've recommended to the staff that signs be put up alerting customers that the jukeboxes might not work and that any money lost would be refunded by your server or the manager. So far I haven't seen any signs. I know if we go back, we'll never try using the jukeboxes again as I consider them more like slot machines and the last time I knew, gambling is illegal in Virginia. What's more disappointing is after our last visit, I contacted the Silver Diner Customer Service twice (first by voice mail and then by email) and I've never heard anything back from them. read more

Absolutely terrible service here today for lunch at around 1:30. No communication between wait staff and kitchen. Waitress forgot to bring our drinks, then brought the wrong ones. Ordered a grilled cheese (how difficult is that?) got a plan cheese sandwich - not grilled. They are off my list for good. read more

We have been here for breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner. The service is good. Depending on the time of the day you go as to whether there is a wait or not. We have tried many different things from the menu, and have always been pleased. The cherry coke is out of this world, as is the brownie sundae a la mode. read more

Not your typical diner. Yes, you can get your full fat chocolate milkshake here, but you can also get a pomegranate shake with bananas, yogurt and wheat germ. And they list the nutritional values on the menu. They pour Greenberry Coffee roasted in Charlottesville, VA, and it's wonderful...so nice to sit down at a diner and get a really great cup o' joe. The breakfast menu is served all day and includes turkey bacon, chicken maple sausage and veggie sausage for those of you watching your waistline. They buy locally baked artisan breads, and local milk, eggs and butter.Your eggs Benny will come on a Wolferman's English muffin, and they even have a gluten free waffle. Of course, if you want to indulge here, you certainly can, but it's nice to have options. The lunch and dinner menus are huge...everything from meal sized salads to burgers, sandwiches and classic diner entrees, some updated to reflect healthier food attitudes. Beer and wine served, and locations in Maryland, Virginia and New Jersey. And here's a nice touch; when you put a quarter in the little juke box located at your booth, it plays all over the restaurant. You can mute this if you don't want to hear a song. Always heard great things about this place from a co-worker. Love the idea of farm to table and sourcing food locally. So I'm giving it 2 stars just for concept. BUT the service was terrible. We were there for almost 2 hours. The food was mediocre at best. The table next to us complained about the slow service and did receive an apology and voucher for a free meal. Since I won't eat there again a coupon didn't make it worth it to complain. If you have 2 hours to waste find someplace better to eat. read more

The food is either a hit or miss -- usually a miss. It tastes like it's been sitting out for pretty long before we get them. It's bland, oily, dry, and disgusting. I try to avoid this location at all times and go to the Merrifield location instead. read more

I've never seen a place like this on the east coast. We came here early Sunday afternoon with a rather large group. We understandably had to wait a bit, but the staff was very accommodating. Our server, Raju, was super friendly and helpful, and knew everything about the menu. I tried the Texas Brisket Burger, which kinda blew my mind. You could see the fine quality of the ground beef, and that the brisket was slow cooked and tender. I usually don't care for brisket, but this was something else. The silver diner has a large menu, with many options ranging from traditional diner food to Chinese dishes. My wife and I decided to have Silver Diner's more traditional items. When in Rome... We ordered the cheese fries for a starter. The fries were decent, and the buffalo south west ranch dressing was good. For our main course my wife had a smoke chedder burger, which she liked alot. I ordered the open faced potroast sandwich. The potroast was tenderand tasty although heavy on the sauce. Overall this is a pretty decent restaurant. read more

Quite possibly the worst service I have ever received. We waited forever before we had to ask if we could order. The server changed on us after we were seated. The food took an eternity to come out. We asked for our check and it was delivered. We were to pay the server when we were me ready, except that the server went missing (again). Had to ask someone else to ring us up. We love this Silver Diner and come here often. Favorites are the chunky monkey shake, coconut cream pie, bison huevos rancheros, lamb sliders and tomato/goat cheese omelette. 80% of the time the service is great but we have had a few occasions where we've had to wait a long time to place order (20 minutes once!), getting the check and waiting for our change on busier days. I haven't been to the Silver Diner in years, but I was blown away by the new menu. Tons of vegetarian options, healthy and delicious. I had the veggie huevos rancheros- full of locally grown high end vegetables. Even the kid's brunch menu was both full of great healthy options. I will definitely be back. read more
