I'm normally not a breakfast person, but Silver Grill is a Fort Collins institution for a very good reason. Everything here is tasty-- both breakfast and lunch options. If you go on the weekend, you'll definitely be waiting for a while (unless you want to to the vulture-style seat hunting around the counter), but it's worth it. Highlights to me are ANYTHING with cinammon roll in the name (toast? french toast? just plain cinammon roll? all delicious) and the fiesta hash browns. Those are gigantic, and I usually take over half of them home with me when I get the half order. For lunch, the patty melt is tasty. Free street parking can be hard to come by, but the city indoor lot is only a block away, and really cheap. Brave the line and go have breakfast! read more

I've come to the conclusion that no one in Fort Collins ever works. Why else would we have to wait 45 minutes for a table on an otherwise sleepy Friday morning? Granted, we did have about 15 people attending this little breakfast, but still. There were certainly plenty of other small groups waiting too. I was informed by a friend that she had made a reservation for our large group, but upon arrival was informed that they don't take reservations. Weird. But let me tell you, it was worth the wait! Shockingly, I had never been to the Silver Grill, despite having grown up in FC. It might be my second-favorite breakfast place now (Egg and I, you will always be #1, even with your lack of cinnamon roll toast). I LOVED that the menu offered smaller portion sizes and ordered the Short Cut cause I am a traditionalist (one egg, half order of bacon, home fries, toast). This is your typical small town breakfast restaurant. The portions are always good and the prices are reasonable. The hashbrowns are bottomless and the cinamon rolls are to die for. The negatives are that on weekend mornings the wait for a table can be quite long. I highly recommend calling ahead to get your name on the list. The best time to go is during the week for breakfast because it's not as busy. Its nearly impossible to find parking anywhere downtown on the weekends, and the wait is forever...go on the WEEKDAYS. So the reason I have given 3.5 stars is because of the space cadet waitresses. They tend to forget to bring items that you've ordered and then they still put it on the bill (after pointing it out, they take it off the bill) There are a couple of waitresses that are rude and act like they hate their job. Yup Silver Grill ...I just needed it today. An iconic FoCo restaurant that's been in place for decades. A legitimate piece of FoCo history that has as much 1920s atmosphere as any place you can find. The food, is of course, solid diner fair; good for hangover cures and famous for it's massive cinnamon rolls. What's amazing is it tastes exactly the same now as it did twenty years ago. I get the fiesta hash browns with a side of green chili, yummy. My eggs were perfectly cooked which when you want your eggs done right is very satisfying. I often visit family in Fort Collins, and this is their go to brunch spot, so we figured why not try again. My first advice: Dont be intimidated by the line. Silver Grill has a HUGE dining room, and a patio out back, so it goes by pretty fast! Not to mention, there are a ton of cute shops that you can walk around prior to eating! The Drinks: This time we didnt have any drinks, but they do have a build your own bloody mary bar on the weekends, that seems to be pretty popular. The Food: Ive tried so many things, but this time I tried the Fiesta Hash Browns smothered with Green Chile. Great portion, but fantastic Green Chile (im from New Mexico, so I am pretty partial). I had it topped off with poached eggs. The server asked how I wanted my poached eggs cooked (ive never had anyone ask me how a poached egg should be cooked). The first egg was a little runny, but a bit over cooked. The second egg was a poached hard boiled egg. It was pretty terrible. Note: Dont forget to try one of their cinnamon toasts as a side. We usually have a great experience at Silver Grill, but this most recent experience one chilly morning two weeks ago was not up to our expectation. We were greeted by the hostess and was told that we would be seated soon. We were then walked towards the back of the restaurant and the hostess told us she was "really excited for us to try out the new addition to the Silver Grill". It turns out they've recently had some work done to the patio to enclose it. We were seated and before the waitress came to help us, we decided the enclosed patio wasn't why we came to the Silver Grill. We wanted to eat in the dining area inside, and the enclosed patio just simply didn't provide the same ambiance that we had hoped for. The waitress was very accommodating in having us seated back in the dining area, and the hostess soon came to take us to our table. Surprisingly, the hostess was very cold in her interaction with us. She let us to the table, and without breaking stride OR turning around to face us, she says "here's your table" and she dropped the menu's on the table, while continuing to walk past the table. Probably the rudest we've ever been treated at a restaurant. We almost asked to speak to the manager on the spot, but decided to see if things improved. The waitress was awesome, the food was great, but the coffee was pretty weak. Two weeks later this situation still bothers me. I've worked as a waiter in a restaurant before, so I get that the hostess may be trying to fill areas for waitstaff that don't have many tables, or that sitting someone out on the patio might get customers to a table faster, but my recommendation to Silver Grill management is that instead of assuming that people want to eat breakfast in their new enclosed patio, offer it as an OPTION. My recommendation to anyone planning to visit Silver Grill, is if you're not asked, let it be known what your preference is for seating during your initial interaction with the hostess. When you step into the Silver Grill, there is an immediate sense of its historical value. The aged brick walls, intricate Victorian-style ceilings and worn wooden floors give this hundred-year-old cafe a unique atmosphere that locals treasure. Stepping in from the south entrance, customers crowd around the podium, where there's always a wait for a table. The roars of dozens of people resound throughout the four "buildings" that make up the Silver Grill. The first time I visited the cafe, I recall thinking it was silly that the owner did not knock out the walls that contain each of the four areas to make for a less cramped eating experience and open the floors to the number of busy servers pacing throughout the place. However, after learning of the restaurant's rich history, I too feel it would be a shame to tear down a piece of what makes the space special. Rather than becoming annoyed with the sometimes-extensive wait, guests head to the award-winning back patio, where they enjoy "winter warmer" drinks while cozying up to the heaters during the winter months, or cool off with fresh squeezed lemonade or homemade sun tea in the summer. When you finally do get seated, service is usually good. Despite some initial experiences that I've since chalked up to a couple less-experienced servers, I've had great experiences here. The expansive menu is enough to get lost in, despite the fact that it's merely breakfast and lunch items. I once made the mistake of ordering the biscuits and gravy that wasn't the best ... Let's not forget the unjustifiably $2.39 cup of mediocre coffee. Instead, opt for the fresh-squeezed orange juice or one of the delicious specialty drinks. These, you wont regret. Even better, hit up the roughly $7 build-your-own Bloody Mary bar on the weekends and you almost won't know what to do with the endless table of garnishes and hot sauces (many of which are locally made). The most important part: they don't roll out more than 10,000 homemade cinnamon rolls every month for no reason. These rolls truly are worth their weight in gold - delicious, carmelly gold. Don't leave without a package of a dozen. There are enough eggs benedict dishes to last you a lifetime without ever having to try the same one, and most are delectable. If that's not your thing, try the classic breakfast burrito, smothered in homemade green chili. If you're part of the lunch crowd, go for the sweet and spicy grilled chicken panini with spicy honey brown mustard sauce. Price wise, expect to pay no less than $8 for any dish, closer to $10 on average. Drinks are what kill me when I go; if you ask me (which, you kind of are by reading my review), they're just a little too overpriced. Nevertheless, it hasn't become a local favorite for nothing. I suggest visitors in Fort Collins make their way in for the cinnamon rolls at the very least! read more
