My coworker took me here and it's a good thing she speaks Cantonese. She ordered for the whole table where I probably would have struggled not being able to read the specials or a lot of the literature in the place. To me the food was ok, a little greasy. I know I know, that's what a lot of asian cuisine is like sometimes. I guess I just have never gotten used to that greasiness and how I feel afterward. Service was curt and fast as expected. I give it 4 stars with a certain caveat. Purely based on food, "Kitchen", "Asian Pearl" and "Koi Palace" are better, but if you live in San Mateo, do not want to drive too far, and do not want to wait in line, "Silver House" will do. While less experimental that "Kitchen", they do update their repertoire - the dishes du jour are on a blackboard, and only half of them are translated into English, but anyway, there is usually something new and interesting there - today, for example, shellfish, mustard green and fish sauce. As for the free soup - they probably guess by looking at you how many starts you are going to give them in your Yelp review, and if it is fewer than 4, why bother? We used to like this place. Went here for a large family dinner last night. We had 4 of the big round tables as we were about 40 ppl celebrating some birthdays in the family. Service was SLOW! I mean SLOW! It's freaking Chinese food. It's supposed to be pretty quick. We weren't ordering anything complex. And all 4 tables had the same menu as we ordered banquet style. Wait staff? Rude! Far from attentive and were giving attitude like we were inconveniencing them! Uhm, hello, we are the customers give you BUSINESS. And because we are a large party they don't need to squat since they automatically charge the tip (just rob us)! How can it take more than an hour to get the soup on the dang lazy susan? It ain't not shark fin soup! Some of our tables had Chinese speaking folks at them...and guess what? They were eating 1st! Of course I'm at a table without any of the Chinese speaking folks so we were passing the soda and tea around. Waiting looking at everyone else's food. Finally we decide to go tell mama at one of our tables that she needs to bust out her Chinese and get us some food! Food came....salt and pepper pork--good, crispy and salty. Chicken wings...not really flavorful and they were greasy. Beef with some veggie...I skipped. Chicken with some veggies...good veggies, chicken okay. Pork egg thing...I skipped but ppl at the table said it was lacking flavor. Deep fried tofu with sauce...not really good and it's not like u can go wrong with this dish as most places. Duck with the buns...I don't eat duck but the buns were good...ppl at our table said it was pretty good but greasy. Chicken with salted fish and tofu hot pot...pretty good flavors and a good balance of the saltiness from the fish. By far this was the best thing that was served. We didn't order dessert as we had cake for the birthdays. They were "kind enough" to serve the cake for us. But I was like damn let me do it. How the hell do you think you can serve cake using the tong style method with a spoon and fork? Dude was grabbing at them like he was using chopsticks. They had a cake server. When I tried to do it myself he just grabbed my plate and plopped a pile of what should have been strawberry cake. Instead I got whipped cream, strawberries a bit of mushed of cake. BOOOOO! And you know what? They didn't give us any orange slices now that I think of it. What kinda Chinese place doesn't serve that after you have that large of a party? Won't be back and I don't think our family will be either. When making the reservations my sister-in-law even tried to pre-order the food but they were like oh, no need to. Weird. I've done Chinese style banquet dinner parties and I always pre-ordered. And you know it ain't all that great if nobody is wanting to take home the left-overs in which there were lots of it. I would have considered taking home the steamed rice to make some fried rice and I know that would have hurt the restaurant's ego as well but passed. read more

I was disappointed about this restaurant after heading here expecting 4-5 stars caliber food. My boyfriend and I went here on weekday evening and it wasn't that crowded. We shared the special menu "C" with the shrimp fried rice, battered shrimp, a chicken dish, a scallop dish, and ground beef with egg soup. I apologize for not being specific with my dishes but they were so uneventful that I didn't care to remember their exact names. The dishes were decent but weren't anything special. The soup and fried rice were bland. I've had better Chinese food and nothing I had here that night makes me want to go back. Service was good though. read more

Been here often, but the quality has gone down over the years, and the cuisine uninspired. At my last visit, we had a mushroom beef dish that was lacking in the prime ingredient - mushrooms - and the beef so chewy you'd think it was gum; also had the roast chicken, but the shrimp chips were utterly stale and not crispy. The chicken itself was soggy, but perhaps the only gnoshable part of the meal. At least the soup of the day and free dessert were good though. read more

Good...the deep fried crab and the beef chow fun. Everyone was pretty good, but this is not the place if you can't handle a little oily food. The fried crab was nicely fried but wasn't seasoned as well as I would have liked. The beef chow fun was very good but doused in oil that I felt like I needed to drink tea to wash it down after every bite. We also got pea sprouts, but since it's pretty hard to screw that up, it's hard to review. Love the place and would go back if my parents were in town. read more

The family usually comes here and for good reason. The place is pretty cheap but the quality of the food is great. Almost all dishes are cooked with an authentic flare to them and are very flavorful. The combination of price and quality really makes this place great. If the parking situation were a little better it would easily deserve a 5 star. read more

Their crispy peking duck with buns is the business! This is the only reason why I come here. It's broasted, crispy and it melts in your mouth! One of the top Chinese restaurants everyone always eats at. Consistently serves good food and free house soup to start off the meal. A must have is the special house chicken. This plate is equivalent to the Chinese chicken nugget. They use the same spicy house sauce that they serve with the whole chicken. You also can't go wrong with the cod fillet with greens. When in season, I would order the razor clams that aren't on the menu. The service is always good and friendly. On the weekends, it might be hard to get a table during normal dinner time. Ok, so this is the best Chinese I've ever had! My boyfriend and I were visiting Frisco and stayed in San Mateo a couple nights...we walked in to check out the place and it was non-stop busy--we figured it must be good, so we ordered ours to go. YUM! Everything we had was amazing...he's from New York and said that it was the best Chinese he's had too (and we've had some pretty good stuff in NY). So.. This is a chinese restaurant right by "The Dosa Republic" on El Camino Real in San Mateo (if I m right).. It's got a family style ambience and if you speak Mandarin (unlike me), you can get recommendations for really good Beijing style dishes. My colleagues enjoyed the place. I, being a vegetarian (ah well, eggetarian, chickentarian too), enjoyed the usually mixed veggies (I know i have to suffer this way.. blame my parents).. nah, i m kidding. They had homestyle eggplant, really good soup for a starter, good braised tofu and mixed green beans.. the chicken dish was good as well. My onnly complaint with chinese food and especially this restaurant is the abundance of oil in their food. it just kills my stomach as much as my stomach appreciates such good.. well, anything that tastes really good is not good for health!! :) read more

i've been here many years ago and remembered the food being actually good. just did take out and was really disappointed. ordered cod fillets w/ veggies, large pea shoots sautéed w/ garlic, Mongolian beef and the roasted chicken. it was over $50. not bad if it were good... pea sprouts looked tired. there were only a few pieces of cod in the cod dish. Had dinner here last night. We ordered the dinner for ten and we got to sample about 6 courses. It was reasonably priced and the portions were bountiful. The funniest part of the meal was after about 4 courses in, we were post squab, pre-crab and had two "main course style dishes" on the table. My brother asked one of the waiters for steamed rice and was told that the rice would come later with the chow main. Would it have been that hard for a Chinese restaurant to adapt to serving rice "out of turn"? Was he really a savage for wanting to mix a little steamed rice in with a squidy chestnutty thing, and brockley beef? The Salt and Pepper crab was very good for my unsophisticated pallet, and I look forward to enjoying salt and pepper left overs this evening. A truly respectable meal, from a respectable establishment. The Tapioca was quite tasty as well, although it let to the embarrassing revelation that none of us really knew were tapioca comes from except for a big box in the store that says Tapioca.
