However, there's nothing special about the food that would 1) make me tell people about it, 2) make this my go to Thai restaurant downtown or 3) make me rate the establishment higher than 3 stars. I tried this around magnificient mile area which is located at ground floor, easy to miss. Its not very spacious and service is slow. I tried these dishes: * raw spring rolls which came with peanut sauce - not good, didn't like it. * Brown rice with red curry with tofu - it was ok, normal thai food. Been on a search for the best thai place in chicago and this one is one of my top. Reasonable prices and great flavors.

The food at this hole in the wall basement restaurant was good. I would recommend the crispy wide rice noodle and chicken topped with thai panang curry. It was exceptionally well executed with great peanut flavors and the subtle crispy texture from the noodles was delightful. However, our tom yum soup was too salty. We went in the evening after work and the place was very quiet until they turn on their little boom box to fill the place with some noise. The Groupon $6 for $12 cut our bill to 9 bucks. I wouldn't mind going there again for lunch or take out, but if you want to eat your thai food at a quiet restaurant at dinner time this is your place. read more

Very small hole in the wall and you might miss it if you're not looking. This place was located in the basement of a house converted I to two restaurants (the top one being a sushi place.) we got in and I think at the right time because it filled up fast after us. It's a small team of likely a family and they hustled their butts off! The food was delicious, hot, and fresh. Their food is ok been to better but I work in the area. It's so hard for this place to give you extra condiments for your Togo order. I always order more than 4-entries from this place and I ask before leave can I please have extra soy sauce or extra hot sauce their answer is always the same yeah it's already in your bag hoping that this time is different I tend to believe them until I get back to my desk and find out they did not put enough condiments for everyone's order. I get tired I stop going for a while but than I wind up there again. I just paid $60.00 dollars and all I got 3-sauce for the whole 4-entries they are so goddam cheep their prices are high you think at least you can have your meal with all the right condiments for your food. I ordered the $12.95 specials one currie chicken and one Currie beef. The curried beef meat was tough with bite size thin morsels and barely any meat. It was mostly Currie sauce. The chicken was better but again cut to thin morsels and barely any meat just a lot of sauce with a few potatoes And some peas For the appetizer I got 3 bite size crab rangoon the smallest I have ever received at any Thai restaurant but they were tasty. The spring rolls were bigger and tasted ok. I told the waitress that the curry beef was hard/tough to see if she could exchange. She seemed offended and said "that's what she ordered". I told her it was not good she just stared. I had to order something else I chose the pad Thai with shrimp which was better. I don't recommend beef dishes. The taste of the Currie was ok. I however feel like you do not get enough food with the specials. There are better Thai places In Chicago. read more

Just ok Thai food. I order the chicken salad (minced chicken, lots of onion, green onion, and a vinaigrette dressing). This was so salty I had to order a side of white rice to eat it. Not only that, there was an enormous amount of onion in it. That amount of onion could be okay, but it would have to be sliced much more thinly so it does not overpower the dish. When we walked it, many of the empty tables had not been cleaned nor were there dishes prepared on them. Service was prompt and very polite though. Tonight we tried this Thai restaurant since we are craving some Asian food. Service is good, the ladies are kind, food quality is good but blend taste. This is what we order, Appetizer, siu Mai - not recommended. Tasteless, pale and not appealing. Main dishes, combination fried rice. Is the best among that we ordered. Recommended. Pad se ew - ok, I wish they are more taste. Pad Thai - sorry but cannot recommend this one. I am so surprise with the taste. It's tomatoie sour and no other flavor. Dessert and drinks Thai ice tea - good and acceptable Young coconut, is good Sticky rice with Mango - recommended, sweet Mango and good amount of coconut cream. I wish I could give zero stars to this place. I ordered from their website but I was told that I have to use grubhub. Nothing against grubhub but I was interested in the small business keeping all their profits so I tried to see if they would deliver. They said they would and mentioned that it would be a $4 fee + tip so I agreed to that hoping to give the delivery guy an amazing tip in order to promote local businesses. When the delivery person arrived to my building he said I have to pay $10 preset tip or else he would leave. I had no choice but forcefully pay the $10 tip! I recently tried this place for delivery and I have to say it wasn't bad. I was concerned with the reviews but I figured I would give this place a chance. I'm happy that I did. I ordered the chicken pad see eiw which was really good. I ate the entire thing. It's not the best pad see eiw I've had but it definitely wasn't bad. My husband ordered the pad thai and considering his plate was clean, I assume he enjoyed his. The reason why I knocked off a few stars is because our delivery did take about 1.5 hours to arrive. In alignment with the chicagoan standard of thai.... different from most thai. The panang curry had a good taste... just meat and sauce though. The spring rolls... unidentifiable filling aside from the mung beans, and wrapped not in a rice paper, but some starch based paper. My quest for a nice Thai restaurant continues....you would think a place next to the Thai consulate in Chicago would be authentic, think again!! We ordered chicken Tom Yom soup thai spring rolls, Chicken red curry, shrimp pad thai and thai chicken fried rice. All of the food was on the table in under 15 minutes (no kidding) and none of the dishes were good enough to leave an impression on our tastebuds. Maybe its my fault for not saying spicey but i wasnt asked. The red curry was a huge disappointment, infact the worst ever. I was craving Thai food and this place was near so I decided to order from here. I order chicken satay, basil stir fry chicken, and orange chicken. First off the chicken satay were delicious but the peanut sauce and cucumber salad that came with didn't taste like anything. Peanut sauce didn't even taste like peanut sauce had other spices in it that overpowered the taste. My basil chicken was very bland also no taste! The sad looking veggies it came with was bell pepper and onion. The orange chicken tasted bitter and the batter was falling off, needless to say it tasted nothing like orange chicken! However the worst part is that they charged 30% tax on my card when tax is only supposed to be 10.25% my husband went to pick it up and the guy ripped the receipt that was stapled from the bag!! I looked at my online receipt and noticed they added 10.25% tax on each item!! Not cool! The food was bland and not up to par plus you're adding taxes per item which is illegal. We read a review that was grumpy about the basement set up of Silver Spoon, the service, and the fellow patrons. We ended up laughing because everything that Yelper disliked, we found quirky and inviting. I liked that it seemed hidden down a set of stairs, and it was small in a cozy way. The food came super quickly. I got green curry which was fabulous. It was just what I needed in terms of creamy spice. I would have loved more eggplant, but overall I was pretty happy. I overheard a server warning other patrons (they seemed like regulars) about the spiciness of a dish, which I thought was very considerate. Not many fellow citizens here in the United States even KNOW about Sai Krog, but it's one of my very favorite Thai dishes. (Yup. Fermented sausage. Sounds gross, maybe, but tastes delicious.) Silver Spoon not only makes wonderful Sai Krog, but also a wickedly spicy green curry. Just great. The Thai-style iced tea here is also a great treat, especially on a muggy Chicago afternoon in August. The pad Thai is what sets this place a little above just good at a 4 star. It's fresh, perfect balance of fish sauce / vinegar / lime/ sweetness and quite a large takeout portion. My spicy crazy noodles were not spicy and bland but the main reason for the 1 star is my chicken on it was obviously spoiled and was grey! I couldn't eat the dish in fear of getting food poisoning! Silver Spoon remains to be my favorite Thai restaurant in Chicago. While there might be "better" places I will tell you that I will not be switching anytime soon as Silver Spoon is just way too convenient for me not to go to. I usually get the Crazy Spicy Noodles (all veggie, extra spicy) and it is consistently good. My sister enjoys this place so much that she actually requests to get take out from here every time she visits Chicago, even over going to out to somewhere fancy in West Loop. I have always had great service and the quality of food has always been great; even when I have tried other dishes outside my normal order. Don't listen to the 3 star average, this place is more than just "A-OK"! read more

I tried this place on a friend's recommendation for a rooftop event recently. I picked up the food and thought the bill was out of line, but I paid it because I was assured the portions would be large. (I didn't have a chance to check because they loaded the food in to my trunk in closed bags.) Instead, the portions were skimpy (small trays for $90), the wrong food was placed in the order (fried rice rather than the pad Thai), and they only delivered the replacement food after the party was almost over. When I called them I got serious attitude and no willingness to provide a credit. Disappointing and will never go back. read more

The food was very delicious. They had an interesting version of tom yum soup which is served in a small bowl rather than the donut shaped metal bowl with the flame in the middle. They also had an interesting version of pad see ew served with bean sprouts and thin-sliced carrots; thankfully though they used Chinese broccoli instead of regular broccoli. The tables and seats were clean and comfortable. 4/5 stars only because the dining area is very small and probably would only be able to hold 4-5 parties of 4 people.
