While most of the dishes are slightly Americanized Thai, the fact that many, if not, most Thai restaurant diners never traveled to Thailand, allows Silver Spoon to remain slightly authentic. The menu is generally reminiscent of Thai with a hint of Mandarin, which at least keeps the flavors similar to dining anywhere in Thailand, and that's what makes the overall experience a positive one. The thai fried rice, the pad thai, pad si ew, baby egg rolls and rangoons are perfectly flavorful, sauces are tasty without an outpouring of sodium or a hint of spicy hot - just the way I like it. Most of all, the vegetables are extremely fresh, colorful, crunchy and slightly crispy. For the Gold Coast, you couldn't ask for a better price and an overall yummy, filling meal. Very pleasantly surprised by this place. Went here with a restaurant.com voucher... and because it's BYOB. So given that we knew our dinner would come in at less than $10 each and we'd get to drink, and the other two Thai places near here are pretty downtrodden, we didn't have high expectations. The food is not spectacular, although they did serve the only crab rangoon I have managed to stomach - it's light and crispy, has actual crab (or fake crab, it's at least seafood) in it and tastes of something! My chicken was tasty and came on lots of good crispy broccoli, and my friend had a veggie curry that tasted very fresh. It's also extremely good value for money. I'd almost be tempted to give them a fifth star because the service we got was lovely. They fridged our wine, brought us chopsticks, and left us to finish our drinks. No attitude for having a coupon either. All round lovely - I can only think that they must have been having a bad day on some of the other reveiwers' visits! Why no fifth star? Well like I said, the food is not 5 star quality really. You get what you pay for. I'd pay for Vong's, nearby, to get more authentic curry in particular. Being a lazy college student who doesn't want to make dinner during a 6 hour study session this place has become my go to, at least twice a week for takeout. I have ordered pad thai, crispy noodle, curry noodles, red curry, crab rangoon, pot stickers, and both the thai iced tea and coffee and all were great. They deliver to me within 40 minutes, always friendly, food always warm and drink always neatly placed inside plastic to avoid spillage(though its never happened here) I'd recommend this place to anyone with a sweet spot for thai/asian cuisine and it's a reasonable price too. read more

"Give me more tip!" The deliver guy demanded more tips or he won't leave. I gave them a four star yesterday. I TAKE IT BACK NOW (0 Star). It doesn't matter how good the food here is or how cheap it is. My order was $9 and ended up being $15 because of the delivery fee that they were vague about whether it applies or not when I called, and then the deliver guy just wouldn't leave. I told him to keep the change, and he said " just give me one more dollar!" He just stand there in front of my desk and demanded more tips. And he started to complain about how the lady in the lobby next door (where he went to the wrong place first) was cranky. I had to go out and try to get him with my cellphone talking to him, otherwise he could not something that he is standing right in front of. I was alone in the office, nobody else was there, so it was a potentially scary situation. I don't get why I should pay for the service fee that I did not get a waiter service for. Just because you went to the wrong place that I should pay to make you happier today? Completely ridiculous. I don't care about that one dollar or two, I just can't stand the attitude. Though I don't live in Chicago, I've been here three times, because my friend and I believe it has really tasty Thai food at very cheap prices (like, $7 for entrees, $3 for Hoa Moak appetizer). It's not the best, most authentic Thai in the country, but it's still excellent. Don't go out of your way for it, but highly recommended for anyone in the area. Subpar Thai food. I think they make some of their dishes a bit tame, so as not to offend any palettes. What resulted was a lack of spice, a lack of fish sauce, and a need for many Thai condiments which were no where to be found. Also, their fresh spring rolls were wrapped in the spring roll wrappers that you are supposed to fry. I didn't even know you could eat those raw. I also don't know why anyone would want to. Love this spot! They're excellent for takeout since I live down the street. My usual order is the chicken khao soy, the shrimp pad Thai, and the chicken Tom kha soup. I rarely write 1-star reviews, but this place deserved it. To set the scene, we (three of us) came here only because I got a restaurant.com gift certificate from a friend. It was for $25, but I had to spend $35 to use it. There were two people serving: a guy running deliveries out and a girl running back and forth between the floor, the register, and the patio. I felt bad for her, but it still took 15 minutes for her to come over and ask if we were ready to order. Never asked for a drinks order, never asked if we had questions about the menu...whatever. This level of service continued throughout the night-- I had to literally get up and wave my arms to get her to stop and refill our water and bring us more rice. We ordered the spring rolls, the red curry with tofu, the pad see ew with tofu, and a veggie dish. The spring rolls were a disgrace-- soggy rice paper rolled thickly around bean sprouts and tofu that couldn't even be picked up with a fork without disintegrating. The plum sauce was good. The pad see ew was tasty, but skimpy on the greens. The only good thing I can say about the curry and the veggie dish is that the tofu was a good texture. "Red" curry? More like orange-y watered-down curry-- no richness to it at all. The veggies were spicy, but spicy by itself is not a flavor. C'mon. Rice portions were ludicrously small-- one half-cup for each of us. Ordered another one and it cost $3. Awesome. Took forever for food to arrive, too. When the bill came, it was for $33 before tip, so I said we'd have to order a dessert to use our gift certificate. The waitress said that the bill was only $26, so we'd have to order $10 more, and she'd written it down wrong or something. We ordered three desserts (which we didn't really want), and when the Thai custard came, we all kind of wanted to find a dog to feed it to. The sticky rice with mango was so gross that one of us gagged, and the mango looked like it had been sitting out for days. Then she brought the new bill, which came to $45 AFTER subtracting the $25 gift certificate. Um...excuse me? I finally told her to take back the other two desserts (all of $7 worth) which somehow lowered the bill to $25 after the gift certificate...? That included an 18% gratuity, but still...weird. It was my first time and it will be my last time EVER going here! The spring roll were like 3 days old and tasted horrible. My pad woodsen was suppose to come with shrimp and it had none. I called them to let them know the problem and she put me on hold for while. She went back and forth with the cook. She finally came back and told me that I was wrong and it had shrimp. I wanted to give this place 4 stars, but I can't. Was craving Thai at about 9:00 pm on a Sunday, and after a quick Yelp search, landed on Silver Spoon. I walked there and arrived at 9:15 (they close at 10 on Sundays). Went in through the basement stairs, which I don't mind at all- going down some stairs to get delicious food isn't the end of the world. When I got in and asked for take-out, the woman at the counter seemed annoyed. She asked if I had called ahead, and I said no, to which she brusquely replied "well, do you know what you want?". I didn't, but I panicked and I hate when people are irritated with me, so I just blurted out 3 items I know most American-Thai places have: appetizer sampler platter, beef and broccoli, and mango with sticky rice. I paid with no problem, and sat and waited. Other people came in and I noticed the lady who was impatient with me was waaaaaay friendlier to a cute guy who came in after me and asked for takeout. That sucked. Sorry I'm not an attractive man. I got my food and walked home. The appetizer sampler: DELICIOUS. So fabulous. Beef and broccoli: nice and big portion with lots of beef, but the taste was only decent. Way too much ginger, which I wasn't expecting. Mango with sticky rice: good. Nothing amazing, but tasty. Indeed, a lot of flavor, as one reviewer said. i love ordering there, delivery is very quick and you always get the same quality, whether it's a monday or a friday. i love their seafood salad, super fresh with big pieces of seafood. Their shrimp in a blanket is omg! i often get the cashew chicken with light oil and it's very good. But recently it was freezing and i wanted soup so i ordered the small vegetable tofu soup. i mean it's supposed to be just a soup. Came down to this cozy little restaurant after finishing some business at the Thai Consulate next door. Usually when I'm in Chicago I try and eat somewhere very special, but I had my elderly grandmother with me. I had the mind to ask the consulate staff if the Thai restaurant next door was any good. "Um, it's okay," they said. I should have listened. It's okay. If you're not picky about your food, it's okay. But the menu is massive for such a tiny kitchen, and I was really surprised when pork was not an available option for my lard nar. My husband said the pad thai was not bad, but my Thai grandmother didn't approve of it or the fried tofu. It was really just good enough for us to not be hungry anymore, and enough to make sure my grandma could still find something to eat despite her discerning taste. +5 points for a Thai staff, another +5 for having champagne mango and sweet sticky rice on the dessert menu. +2 for house-mixed Thai iced tea. Mediocre Thai food at cheap prices. Crab ragoons: Not the best i've had, but still decent. I personally prefer the thicker wonton wrapper rather than the thin spring roll wrapper they used. With one order, you can expect six crab ragoons, which I think is a great steal. Bamee BBQ Pork: This can be ordered with or without broth. I would definitely recommend it with the broth. Without it, the noodles lacked flavor and the BBQ pork was overcooked and dry. However, the broth not only added some rich taste to the dish but also came with some pea shoots. Curry crispy noodle: I was not a fan of this dish at all. The noodles were hardly crispy, and the panang curry sauce that smothered the noodles was way too salty. My overall reaction to Silver Spoon: Meh... I went during lunchtime and took advantage of their lunch special, which is an appetizer and a main dish for $6.95. I chose the crab rangoon, after reading a good review of their version on here, and the pad see eiw. I did like the crab rangoon, they were tasty, a bit on the small side. But they were packed with flavor, and the sauce was good. The pad see eiw on the other hand...was only ok. The noodles and sauce tasted a bit odd, like it was burnt, there was a charred aftertaste in my mouth, and a bit of a fishy aftertaste that didn't go away for a couple hours. Not the best feeling. I also had the thai iced tea with a touch of cream in it, and it was pretty good. Sweet and refreshing. For the price, it was decent, but I think I'd go somewhere else and only return for rave reviews of a different dish. read more

Okay, 5 stars might be a bit of an overstatement as Silver Spoon is no where near gourmet, but where can you go to get a full stomach for $10 all the while complementing the food?!? We were here late on a Friday (the kitchen closes at 10:30), but we didn't mind being a bit rushed cause we were SO hungry!! Since Silver Spoon is a BYOB, we walked a block north on Rush to the convenience store to grab a bottle of cabernet. We sat down and were served promptly (not sure if this was solely a function of them wanting to close up for the night...). The potstickers were good, but the crab rangoon were AMAZING! This dish had never been one of my favorites as I always felt it was too dry due to a large portion of wonton and no crab. The crab rangoon here were the exact opposite. There was so much deliciously warm crab and cream cheese mixture I was surprised. These are hands down the bext crab rangoon I've ever had! I ordered the pad thai, which was pure deliciousness compared with the horrible fare I typically order at Panang on Chicago. I will not be frequenting that average joint when I know there is a much better place in the same neighborhood. I got tofu pad thai, and although the tofu pieces were small, I much prefer them to the oil drenched hunks I receive in my Panang pad thai. The sauce was sweet and it was a decent portion for the $6.95 price. My friends got the pad si ewe (not sure if I spelled it right) and the signature curry dish made extra spicy. Both were good although I much preferred my order. No dessert for us as we were so stuffed and tired after eating. I know this place will now be in my rotation of take-out restaurants close to my apartment. It actually looks like it could be a sushi house (may have been a long time ago, but I know the Spoon has been there for a while). It was easy to get a seat on a Saturday night, which makes me think bad business, or just not impressive enough down in the River North/Gold Coast area. I don't expect much for Asian food in this area. Prices are very reasonable and food comes out hot and fast but it's time to crackdown on the stars. The economy is down and so are my stars. My shrimp wonton soup basically could've been named MSG soup. Full of MSG and one measly piece of shrimp floating by itself. The three wontons were filled with some pink fish paste (ok, maybe a few very very small chunks of shrimp floating here and there but it was barely detectable). Two girls in the big city, hungry, and a little lost. We stumbled across this little place while looking at the menu for the sushi joint above and decided to give it a try. It's super small, which was a little annoying because the enamored guys on a date we were seated next to didn't even bother to budge, and I ended up just sitting on the jacket of the guy next to me because he didn't care to move it. Anyway, back to the food, which was some of the cheapest Thai food I've ever eaten, yay cheap! The spring rolls were ok, I liked how the drizzled sauce was warmed and poured over the rolls. I was tired and hungry after a delayed flight. I just want some Asian food. I ordered papaya salad and the Spicy Crazy Noodles with beef. Food: Papaya salad was ok. Beef was incredibly tough, probably got stir fried for way too long. Service: I was unlucky enough to arrive just 5-10 mins before a huge group walked in and were seated next to me. They ended up just kind of sat VERY close to me and my table, so I ended up moving my small table away by myself. Waitresses seem to super rush through everything. I was eating the papaya salad and still had some papaya/ peanuts/ lettuce chunks on the plate. I looked down to my purse looking for the phone for maybe 5 seconds, and looked back up just to see a waitress scooped the plate away already (!) Come on, couldn't you have just asked? I was still working on the noodles when I got the check, and EVERY SINGLE TIME the waitress walked by after she would look in a very obvious way to see whether I'd place my CC there yet. Sitting right next to the Royal Thai Consulate, you'd think this place is THE place to go in Chicago for thai food. But once you have one meal here, that theory goes right out the window. The food is okay - and by 'okay' I mean disappointing. To me, any thai food that doesn't knock your socks off is a letdown. It's better if you eat in, but even then, it's not any more noteworthy than Panda Express or something similar. BEST Crab Rangoon that I have EVER had. I have been to SIlver Spoon twice now, and each time I have had the Crab Rangoon, and it has been amazing each time. I've also ordered the Tofu Pad Thai each time, which definitely hits the spot and is tasty, but not nearly as delicious as the Rangoon. And the dipping sauce that comes with the Rangoon is really really good, too! The portion sizes are pretty large, and I still have half of my Pad Thai left over from my last trip there because it was just too much to eat in one sitting. My friend had the Thai Iced Tea with cream the first time we went and I tried a little bit of that, and it was surprisingly good. I'll have to order that next time I eat in. It definitely helps that this place is cheap, fast, and only about a block from my apartment. It's open later than most places I like to eat at, too, so that is another plus. The ladies working are always nice, and I am always helped immediately. They do deliver, which is tempting sometimes, but I live so close that I would feel ridiculous doing so. read more

I don't think Silver Spoon quite deserves the rant Daniel L gave it, it's just an average Thai restaurant in a very touristy part of town and it smelled good when we walked in. The fact that it's cheap is definitely a plus, having been to its more expensive upstairs neighbor. My friends and I shared a few dishes, some better than others. The chive dumplings were kind of mushy and unspectacular, but the shrimp rolls were excellent (but expensive at $6 for 5). The Lard Nar was solid, the duck curry tasty with a good amount of duck, but somewhat watery. The ginger chicken definitely didn't taste very Thai, and somewhat Americanized. Still, considering the alternatives close by, it's not terrible, and it's heaps cheaper than Big Bowl. read more

I went here for lunch earlier this week and found it very enjoyable. Their lunch special is $6.95 for an entree and appetizer ( a limited selection). I had the crab ragoon (they call it crab lagoon) and ginger chicken. The crab ragoon was tasty, they were hot and the dipping sauce was good. I also enjoyed my ginger chicken- it was the perfect size for lunch and had a lot of vegetables. The service was extremely fast, something that is essential for a work day lunch. I was in and out in about 30 minutes. The place was pretty crowded, but I found a seat immediately. I didn't feel out of place at all sitting by myself, another bonus. This place isn't necessarily different from the plethora of similar thai restaurants in the city but I think it's worth a visit for lunch. read more
