What happened to this place? Maybe they were having an "off" night? I ordered the Seared Ahi "Nicoise" salad and was expecting thinly sliced ahi displayed nicely on top of the lettuce (like most places provide). Instead I got mushed up chunks of fish scattered throughout my salad that I had to pick through to find. The salad had so much dressing on it I actually think the fish drowned in it. My husband and I also ordered the Blue Cheese Haystack to split, which is not what I remember. It was like they dumped a cheap blue cheese dressing on top of the fries and called it a day. The haystack of a few years ago had chunks of blue cheese. New chef? Budget cuts? Who knows! Thankfully there are too many other amazing restaurants in Manhattan Beach to bother with the 45 minute wait for this low budge food again. read more

My best friend and I have been coming here for years and it's our go-to spot when we don't want to have to think about where we want lunch. There are a few staff members that we've been seeing here since we've been coming here and I love the continuity. The food is always top quality, definitely get the wings! They take a few minutes to make, but well worth the wait! I'm also a big fan of the chicken, Apple, and walnut salad as well as the pork sandwich and the poké. They also typically have a great wine selection, although I'm disappointed to see the Frank Family Chardonnay is no longer on the menu! We've run into employees like Janna, Alex, and a guy we've nicknamed Rico recently, but we have some historic favorites like Christina and David. Every single one is pleasant, and most certainly sets the standard for the location! While it's worth the wait, the only caveat is and less you come right when they open, be prepared for a wait, especially on the weekends! A wait for a table of 2 to 4 people can take as long as an hour or more on the weekends, but typically isn't more than 20 minutes during the week. And while waiting, you're welcome to order drinks at the bar and hang out inside for your table. Top quality food and drinks, and amazingly friendly and professional staff (actually, with the exception of a female manager who generally seems to only check in with male patrons; she's never once acknowledged me in the years I've been coming here and also seems to have attitude with the staff in front of customers), and a great location just a couple blocks off of the water. read more

Our first time here and we order their fries, each ordered a spicy tuna on crispy rice, and two beers. They served us their haystack (but we did not know this since we had never been here). We started eating it and enjoyed but they quickly realized their mistake and took it from us and we waited quite awhile for French fries and our spicy tuna. We were starving, we thought since it was their mistake and they were just going to throw out the haystack (we hope they did) they should have just informed us and let us finish it. A friend brought me here for lunch the other day. Ordered a burger, which was delicious. Friend ordered hers without the aioli sauce, but when she discovered that they forgot to take it out, the server graciously took it back. My friend and I didn't love our overpriced beer. My cider was way too sweet and they were out of his so have him the most simile but for $2 more? And didn't even warn him? Not cool. This place is very much a mixed bag. I wanted so badly to give them a good rating; I really did. But the fact is, they're simply too popular for their own good, and to my way of thinking they really suffer for it. Their food is quite good (think Belgian meets casual American contemporary), and both the scope and quality of their beer selection is commendable. I'm a total beer snob, and this is one of only a handful of places in all of Southern CA that sells Magic Hat #9, one of my favorite New England brews from when I went to college there. A lot of the other beers they sell are ones I personally happen to not care for, but I obviously don't fault them for that. I still appreciate their rather amazing selection. The atmosphere isn't really what it's cracked up to be, however. It's an incredibly cramped little location that was obviously never intended to be a real restaurant or bar. The site would be reasonably well-suited to a small casual chain like Subway or La Salsa (it was a tiny Asian fusion sushi-bar-type-thing before this), but is entirely too small to seat more than about a dozen people (excluding the bar, I suppose) comfortably inside. But, rather than embrace the hole-in-the-wall ethos that comes with the lease, they've simply become too popular for their own good, as I already mentioned. It's exceptionally rare to see the place not completely slammed at just about any hour of any day. To make matters worse, I personally find their target demographic of 20-something hipsters a highly repellent personality. Note to bar managers everywhere: hipsters aren't the only ones who appreciate craft beer. The only time I was ever able to get in without a wait was late-night on a Tuesday in the cold weather. Expect a wait of a good hour-and-a-half on Friday and Saturday nights. I mean, I'm sorry, but if I want to wait 2 hours for something to do on Friday or Saturday night, I'll go to a club. I don't want to have to wait 2 frickin' hours just to get *seated* for my damned dinner. I suppose it would be a different story if we were talking 5-star gourmet cuisine, but, as good as their food is, it goes without saying that we're not. You're basically paying and waiting for the chance to get "face-time" in *the* "trendy" spot in downtown Manhattan Beach, which is not exactly my idea of a good time. And, as is usually the case with establishments in downtown Manhattan Beach, unless you live within walking distance (or are hanging out with somebody who does), you might as well take a cab. Besides the obvious issue of drinking and driving, downtown MB is notorious for having horrifically terrible parking. I suppose downtown Hermosa is worse, but I'll pass on both and hang out where I don't have to hunt for a space for 45 minutes, thank you. Sadly, I don't feel their food or beer is a big enough draw to keep me coming back to fight the annoying hipster crowds. I can buy most of the beers they sell at BevMo, and just bring my friends over to my place to hang out on our own terms and not have to wait an hour just for standing room at the bar. read more

There is a reason this place is packed! Came here last night and waited about 20 minutes for a table. There are TV's everywhere, and the floor plan is open so while you're waiting, you can watch TV or the people all around. This place is ideal for people watching, for sure. It's located right on the corner of MB Blvd and Highland, so location is prime. There's street metered parking and parking garage metered parking - translation, plenty of parking @ $.75/hr. It's a block from the pier and the view of the sunsets are the reasons people move here. The service was good, not great, but good. I'm not sure why I expected more, but I did. *shrug*. After seeing all the pics, I had to get the sangria. I make my own sangria and its pretty damn popular, so my bar is high when it comes to this stuff. I was REALLY disappointed. It was not sweet, at all, and the only fruit present were apple and orange slices - no pineapple. SMH. Not what I was expecting. The food, though, is amazing. AMAZING. The husband & I had the haystack fries (A MUST) and the blue cheese bacon burger. Yes, we got the same thing LOL. The burger was big, juicy, and cooked to perfection. There was a nice amount of CANDIED, YES CANDIED bacon, which was chopped, so you got bacon in every single bit. WOOT! Along with the bacon were blue cheese crumbles that were soooo delish - the perfect bite, not overwhelming - and caramelized onions. Oh yeah, lettuce & tomato - blah blah. It's all about the candied bacon, people. The highlight of the meal were those blue cheese haystack fries. O M G. If you love shoestring fries, blue cheese dressing, and fresh garlic, GET THESE!! The service is pretty great whenever we go but they are always packed on the weekends, well at least when we go! The seating is very tight and its pretty loud but a great place overall. This review is for the general manager who took amazing care of me while I was visiting for a few days. I had a not so great experience with the fish tacos, and he went above and beyond to make it up to me. I went back and had the bacon bleu cheese burger and it was amazing. The flavors are to die for. The GM, and I am sorry I forgot his name, seriously cares about the customer and truly wants people to have a good experience. Crap happens and life certainly isn't perfect all of the time but I can say that I truly appreciate accountability. It showed me that they really care about their customers as well as their business. This burger is really good. Not the best burger I have ever had, but should be tried if you are in the area. I ordered the Blue Cheese Bacon burger and added swiss cheese to the mix (I love you Swiss mixed with Blue). The burger was cooked to perfection and the bacon was crispy. I really had a fantastic experience here. I was on a long layover from LAX and took a cab down to Manhattan Beach on the recommendation of other Yelpers. When I went out to the pier I talked to some locals and they recommended Simmzy's for lunch. They were not wrong. I had one of the best salads I've ever had here - the Shrimp Citrus and Avocado Salad. There were plenty of shrimp, nicely grilled, the avocado was perfectly ripe, the goat cheese was a nice touch and the dressing was very light and citrusy. They also had a fabulous selection of beer. I had the Stone Ruination IPA, one of my favorites. I noticed other people favoring the white wine sangria, which looked very refreshing. read more

This place was so packed on Saturday night that the hubby and I just ordered beers and stood outside. I tried the Tokyo stout because it was 18% ABV and the hubby got an IPA. The beers are pretty darn expensive here, but we should have expected that. The stout was potent, but way too sweet. The beer selection looked good but we didn't want to stand outside all night.
