This has been one of our go-to SE Asian spots for years, and it's consistently good (and survives the wait and travel well for takeout/delivery). My favorite dishes include roti, laksa, char kway teow, and nasi bungkus. We did a takeout order and it was ready within 15 minutes of ordering which was great. The food was still hot when we got home and was very obviously fresh. We ordered the char kway teow and the beef rendang - both were phenomenal. The noodles were super flavorful and had generous amounts of protein as well. The spice level was perfect for us, just a little kick but not painfully hot. The rendang was amazing too, probably my favorite thing that they have. It's so tender and filled with so much flavor. First time at the Venice location and I love it! I think that they recently renovated and I really like what they've done with the space! We were seated at a table where two seats were on a love seat and the other two seats were chairs. I love this concept -- really cute, and feels really open. We decided we were going to tackle the menu family-style, as we definitely should for Indonesia food! We started with the roti paratha. The size of the dish was smaller than I wanted and the paratha was a bit on the oilier side, but oh my gosh, the flavor of the curry! So good! For the entrees, we got the char Kwey Tiao, which had an amazing amount of "wok hey": had that amazing smokey flavor. We also got the nasi bungus, which gave us a great sampling of a variety of dishes, including the beef rendang, which was one of the dishes we wanted. Oh my gosh, beef rendang was melt in your mouth good. The other curries were also very good. Normally, I just eat the the rendang from this dish, but the other curries were so good that I wanted some of those too! Looking forward to coming back. ONly thing that was strange was that they didn't have alcohol options, but they told us that we could order beer from their sister restaurant, the sandwich store next door, and walk our beer over. I like the food. It was a disappointment, not to be able to get the roti last night. The fried chicken was different this time, but truly delicious. It's fine for takeout and delivery, but it's not much of a place to go to eat atmospherically. That's too bad because it could be. I love the cendol a authentic Indonesian drink. Five stars for DELIVERING A WHOLE GRILLED FISH to my door for under twenty dollars!! Wow! I feel like this restaurant must be operating at a loss when they make the Ikan Bakar #609, but this dish is seriously a whole grilled tilapia with sweet soy garlic sauce for $17.45 that you can order on your favorite delivery platform to be delivered to your door. We seriously thought the fish would be filleted or chopped into pieces or something but no, it was an intact, whole fish that they grilled, shoved in a box and delivered to us. And it tasted good! We also got the Kwetiaw Goreng #203 (flat noodles with chicken, read: pad see ew), Chicken Sate #104 (chicken skewers), and Roti #101. The noodles were a bit on the salty side but the skewers were seasoned very well. We'll probably find a different noodle dish next time. We will definitely be ordering from here again. read more

We normally go to the Palms location, but we ordered food from the Venice location yesterday. I was really disappointed by the portion sizes. The takeout containers were barely halfway full. While we were waiting for our order to be ready, I noticed the dishes served in the restaurant contained much larger portions than what we received in our takeout order. read more

Char kway Teow (13.95) - this is my favorite noodle dish here. dry and delicious. great amount of meat. Cah Kang Hung (9.95) - Sizzling morning glory for the gods. So much garlic my mouth was so happy Ayam Penyet (13.95) - this smashed chicken came with eggplant with a pungent kick of shrimp paste. I loved the textures and the intensity of flavors! In fact if you're looking for an absolutely amazing hearty Rendang Padang I don't know a place in LA that honesty does it better. Of note this place is smaller with all indoor seating. It's a bit cozier and has nicer interior design giving it a bit more of an upscale experience. One other thing to note is this place is only open 4-9pm most days. Ordered the nasi goreng jagger through Uber Eats ($19.95) and DANG, do not get this dish unless you have a high spice tolerance! I honestly had to split it into multiple meals because I simply couldn't handle the heat. I would describe this dish as a glorified fried rice with everything you can think of in it, on fire. To be honest, I don't think I would order it again, but I can see why it would be considered a unique dish. I've also tried the nasi bungkus and the ayam penyet, which I prefer to this dish. I ordered some dishes here for delivery. Nasi Goreng Jagger: 5 out of 5 I would say this is the best Nasi Goreng I've had in my lifetime. They were very generous with the portions. It's served with a beautiful thick omelette blanketing over the rice. This dish is a must for spicy food lovers; and believe me, they do not mess around with their spice level. I found 2 different kinds chopped chili and more crushed ones. I absolutely loved the depth of the aroma from the spices, textures from the proteins, and the ensemble of the flavors incorporated in this one dish. Nasi Bungkus: 5 out of 5 I initially ate it right out of the box, with the leaves folded into a bowl-like shape. I realized that probably did not do the ensemble of the dish any justice. When I took the leaf with the dish out of the box and I ate it with the leaves flat on the table. Ah, yes, it hit a little differently. I have nothing but adoration and respect for authentic food and the authentic way of eating them. The flavors of this dish were so beautiful! The curries with the proteins (beef and chicken) mixed with the rice enveloped inside the leaf just marinated the pocket of food so tender and aromatic. I just wish I ordered it a spice level up for that extra kick! ;) Uduk Jakarta: 3 out of 5 The chicken, just like the rest of the dish, was dry and underwhelming in flavor. It came with the smallest side of sambal, which was disappointing, because I expected there to be a lot more. The sambal is what gives this dish that punch of flavor, and the absence of that just took away from the experience. Laksa: 3 out of 5 I love laksa, but this is the least favorite laksa I've had thus far. It was bland in flavor and the taste just felt off in terms of texture of the ingredients, as well. The laksa is not their best dish, but perhaps it would have been better if this was eaten while dined at the restaurant. For this reason, I want to cut them some slack. read more

Truly one of the best Indonesian restaurants I have ever been to! The service was so fast and the waiters were really nice and attentive. Unlike the other location, we didn't have to wait at all! I think everything on the menu looked amazing but a MUST GET is roti (and it really should be one order person because it was gone before the other dishes arrived). We also got the Mie Tek Tek, Ayam Penyet, Lumpia, and Cah Kangkung. Everything was just amazingly flavorful and we were stuffed by the end. Highly recommend coming! read more

I really wanted to love this place, but alas, it's mediocre at best. As a part Indonesian, I always long for good home-country eats, and was happy to see this place so close to where I now live. We ordered a bunch of things, expecting a couple hits and misses, and unfortunately got more misses. For beverages, the iced "teh botol" is very much like home, so that was good, but the "cendol" tasted like it was pre-made and left in a container to pour from. The enjoyable part of cendol is mixing it when it gets to your table, not having it premixed and tasting like yesterday's left-overs.... it's sort of like ordering a rootbeer float, but having them premix it for you, rather than you manually mixing it and enjoying the experience of it. The chicken satay suffers from "too much make up". This means that the peanut sauce was actually pretty damn good (the "make up"), but the chicken was bland, like boiled chicken stuck on skewers. The secret to good satay is that the meat itself has to be either marinated or cooked with enough flavor to stand on it's own, without additional peanut sauce. Rookies might like this dish, but to an experienced palate, it's sub-par. The gado-gado was just horrible. The entire dish was served hot and mushy, and the peanut sauce used here did nothing to improve it. Gado-gado is supposed to be served with only slightly steamed or boiled vegetables, with some fresh cucumbers for a nice cool/warm texture, and is suppose to be pleasant to look at. What ended up on our table was...... mush. We couldn't even finish it. It was as bland as it was ugly. Never order this. The beef rendang isn't bad. Very soft, and is of the wetter variety, and it does a decent job. I wouldn't mind eating this again. The dishes that did shine were the martabak telor (the kids loved it), and the kangkung vegetables. I'm willing to give the menu another try to sample the rice and noodle dishes, but it's pretty obvious where I stand with the other stuff. read more

The service is great, the staff is extremely sweet. No outside seating available. Tables are spaced out and not many available. But we were able to be seated immediately as it was not busy when we arrived, but started filling up as we were eating. They seem to have a lot of to go traffic. I was really looking forward to ordering the whole fish but they do not offer it at this location. Everything else we ordered was ok, didn't find them to be special, nothing really exceptional but still a great experience. The service was what stood out the most. The parking lot is small and shared with the other establishments in the plaza. Our car was blocked in for about ten minutes while another customer parked illegally behind our car while ordering from another restaurant. Had to run to each store to ask who's car it belonged to and was not able to find anyone so ended up waiting. So inconsiderate of the guy. read more

Simpang Asia is definitely a unique spot with delicious food. When I use to live in Culver City I frequented their Palms location so now that I'm on the westside I was so happy to hear about this new location. Indonesian food isn't something I know too much about but I do know this much: it's effing delicious. Typically we would order the #8 nasi bungkus, roti paratha and mie tek tek (all delicious and definitely recommend) but opted to try a couple of new items on their menu. Pictured is the takeout of their char kway teow (left) and nasi goreng jawa (right). We asked for spicy and it had a little kick but my tolerance is high and I like it extra hot so I actually added extra hot sauce when i got home. Both of these dishes were incredibly delicious, filling and had an insane amount of flavor. So far I haven't had a bad dish from this place and I look forward to trying more of their menu items. I love finding smaller, more unique restaurants like this on the westside and want to keep supporting local restaurants during this time. If you're looking to do the same, please give these guys a try. You won't be disappointed. read more

Three of us went there a couple of weeks ago. Since Simpang Asia West LA around for a long time we thought we gave it a try the one in Venice. We tried Soup Buntut, Nasi lemak Rendang , Sate. and Chah Kwe Tiau/CKT. Foods did not quite meet our expectations . The nasik lemak, rendang and Sate are not quite authentic as we thought. The gado gado lacks vegetable and peanut sauce. But it was an experience. read more

I had been to the original late last year and loved it, so when an Indonesian friend told me they were opening a second location in Venice, I was all over it! I was happy to drive to the original, but even better when it's closer to home! I got takeaway. They limit the number of people inside (one to order, one next in line) and ask others to wait outside due to COVID protocols. I was able to place my order after waiting in the short line. A bit later, the owner came out with a neatly packaged bag of food. Got home and enjoyed the roti prata (fried flatbread with a curry dipping sauce that you will want to drink) and the lemper (a warm rice roll with spiced chicken inside). Parking available in the strip mall and additional on the street... definitely easier than the original location. Run, don't walk and support our newest spot on the westside! read more

New favorite delivery spot. Have ordered from here twice now, and each time was very, very good. Dishes rated: Risoles - 4* - delicious little crunchy crepes with minced chicken. Very savory and comfort food-y dish. only thing I would change is maybe to give a bit more flavor punch. Mie Tek Tek - 5* - got this both times. So, so good. Great cold or reheated the next day too. It reminds me of a chinese lo mein but with complex, deeper flavors. Nasi Goreng Jawa - 5* - was surprised how many noodles there were in this fried rice, but whatever it was delicious Coconut Beef Steak (Rendang) - 5* - fall apart in your mouth with tons of flavor. Over rice, this is delicious. Roti Paratha - 5* - so glad they don't mark it up like crazy like some other places. The flaky layers of bread and sauce are soooo good! The food here was vibrant with balanced flavors and optional spice levels! Our server was very kind and helpful for first timers. The menu descriptions in store are a bit difficult to imagine however they offer pictures for each item on their website which proved to be very helpful. The restaurant itself was small and comfortable but not too crowded because most people order takeout. I highly recommend people to eat at this restaurant if they want flavorful south Asian food and are up for trying something new! Their es cendal drink entails coconut milk, pandan jelly, and palm sugar and I recommend starting with this milky boba-like drink. read more
