I have reordered their Rendang (coconut beef steak) almost a dozen times and I'm never disappointed. The beef is soft and the sauce pairs perfectly with the coconut rice (costs a little extra than the plain rice). The Roti is also a favorite of mine. OMG! This is my new FAVORITE ASIAN restaurant on the West Side! PLEASE give me more. EVERYTHING we ordered was delish! "Kroger" - wonderful heavenly balls of chicken heaven. Martabak Telor- Indonesian version of quesadilla- minced meat and onions back in between two bit of thin dough! Sooo yummy! Festival Rice - A little bit of so many good things. Basically a scoop of Indonesian pot roast, two heavenly chicken sate skewers, a hard boiled egg with yummy tomato based sauce over the top, turmeric coconut rice, and they fried peanut mixture that was perfect. (Decided next time to split this if we get the appetizers) My friend got Indonesian Garlic Noodles but restaurant called this something else. I'm allergic to some components so I couldn't try but told it was good. Lastly, order of garlic green beans. Perfectly cooked. I will be going back. Everyone at the table was thrilled and delighted. Called. Staff said give 20 minutes. I was there in 15 and it was ready. Looks like they have an outdoor patio if you wish to eat as well as small indoor seating area. Simpang Asia is a hidden gem located in a small shopping center with ample parking. We came in on a weeknight and were seated right away. The restaurant has a great ambiance and the staff was extremely welcoming. Since it was our first time trying Indonesian food we decided to order one of the most popular dishes, the Mie Tek Tek noodles. While the Mie Tek Tek noodles may look like other South Asian noodle dishes, the flavors made this dish really unique and unlike anything we have tried before. You're able to customize the level of spice which is great since the noodles do have some heat! Overall, we were pleasantly surprised by how delicious and enjoyable our meal was. Simpang is pretty darn clutch. I don't really know half of the menu items, but not that I've tried more than half of the menu I can honestly say everything is fantastic. I tend to get the Paratha (soooooo good) and one of the entrees. If you're not feeling adventurous, the Rendang is delicious and reminds me of a traditional beef stew. The fried rices are also delicious and pretty straight forward. The coconut rice is one of my favorite forms of rice I've ever had! The location off Lincoln can be busy and parking is tough, but it's totally worth it. The service is kind and accommodating, and I really couldn't ask for more. Give this place a try, and don't be turned off by the random strip mall. You won't be let down. read more

We really wanted to love this place as we had read the reviews but...so much of the food was deep-fried, a little greasy, super salty and most importantly, later that evening, we felt bloated and not right. Service was super friendly but the place had a lot of take-out orders and we ended up waiting for quite awhile for our last 2 items. By that time, I wish we had left as it was more of the same. Came here to have an early dinner for a party at three and we sat outside in the makeshift patio and had some delicious Indonesian food we let our server picked the appetizers and everything was on point, I have pictures but I don't even remember what the name of it was and then he picked two entrées and it was also delicious along with three Vietnamese coffee's and the price was $86 plus tip and we were out the door for less than 100 bucks.... Simpang Asia in Venice is a tiny restaurant in a small strip mall with a parking lot in front and back. We dined on their patio in front for Covid safety. We ordered chicken satay, matabak telor, oxtail soup, gado gado salad, fried rice, 2 noodle dishes, a chicken entree, and a whole fried fish. The satay was dry and tough. We had to truly struggle to get it off the wood skewer. We ordered the oxtail soup with the oxtail friend and presented separately from the soup. The soup was delicious but the oxtail was tough and overcooked. Not much meat too. The fried rice dish was good. I forget which one. I loved the gado gado salad. A must order. One noodle dish was great and the other was kinda bland and meh. The chicken entree was just one piece of chicken which was a mistake to order as there were 6 of us. Better for one or two people. The fried whole talapia was one of the biggest hits of the night and stupidly priced. All the dishes are inexpensive. We spent $22 each with tax and 20% tip. All satisfied and full. This Simpang Asia is only 6 months old. The second restaurant for the super popular and crowded location on National in Palsm The Palms place has been around for 12 or 15 years. Both Simpang Asias feature Indonesian fusion cuisine with influences from Malaysia, Singapore, and one other country. Some of the dishes are actually Malaysian and Singaporean. One of us grew up in Malaysia. I have spent a month in Singapore. Maybe one of the best countries on the planet for food. The staff were super friendly and attentive. As they have not been open for too long, this location was not super busy on a Saturday from 6pm til 8. I hope business picks up for them once Westsiders realize it's a wonderful restaurant. read more

This place is pretty much a LA institution now. Id say the food reminds me of Thai food but better. Great selection of main courses, combos, and appetizers. The "banana leaf" combo is the recommended starting dish from this place. It unfolds from a "pack" to a full meal. They also sell Malaysian snacks and groceries at the restaurant, tho a small selection. Next door used to be their full Malaysian grociery, but I think its a sandwich shop now. In terms of main part of LA this place is the definitive Malaysian restaurant. Parking can be tricky but usually within five minutes you can grab a spot if you wait. This is a cute little spot in a strip mall and is a good choice for a quick bite in Venice. It's clean, the food is fresh, and the service is polite and speedy. As the food was being prepared, my partner stepped out to buy some beer at a nearby store--they do not have beer on the menu, but they do allow you to bring your own. We ordered four items from the menu: Roti Paratha, Risoles, Char Kway Teow (noodles), and Rendang coconut beef. None of the items had the full flavor of Indonesian cooking--but the Char kway teow was the best thing we ordered. The Risoles were undercooked. I was expecting the curry sauce that came with the roti paratha to have a bit more of a robust flavor. Also, it was the world's smallest paratha lol. Everything tasted okay, but nothing was super impressive. I feel like they need to cut down on their menu's offerings, and offer fewer options that are all on point. There's promise here, but they need to step up their game a bit before I can recommend Simpang. read more

I ordered all this food to go. So I actually ate these things in the car because I still had to drive 45 minutes to get home. Lame. I thought they would be warm? Ordered the Mie tek tek. 3/10. It was whatever. No chicken in it and just some basic noodles. Definitely a small dish too. Very subpar. LASTLY, I ordered the nasi goreng jagger. -7/10 I think there's a difference between extremely spicy and extremely inedible. I love spicy and this was absolutely ridiculous. It was so spicy I literally couldn't eat it. It felt pretty awesome to take a 16 dollar meal and throw it straight into the trash. Also the egg wasn't any good either. I tried to get through it by taking a heart burn pill but 2 bites was all I could do. It wasn't worth it. So ya, that's my experience. Don't think I'll be coming back here.
