Simply Fish Seafood is the real deal. Owner Derek Taguchi clearly knows what he's doing, and it shows in every aspect of the restaurant. The seafood is incredibly fresh, high quality, and prepared with care, yet the prices remain surprisingly reasonable, a combination that's hard to find these days. The atmosphere is lively, welcoming, and just plain fun, making it a great spot whether you're grabbing a casual dinner or celebrating with friends and family. It's obvious this place was built by someone with a genuine passion for seafood and creating a great dining experience. If you're looking for outstanding seafood without the fine dining price tag, Simply Fish should be at the top of your list. I'll definitely be back!
I went here with a party of 3 on a Saturday afternoon and it was a good experience. The menu is quite large and there was live music to keep us entertained. We had shrimp taquitos and fried clams for our appetizers and I ordered the Brazilian Lobster Special for my entree. The taquito were good, and the clams were good too but they gave us so many that after a while it started to get old. I think this would be a great option for a larger party still. The lobster meal that I got had beans and coleslaw. It was good but nothing groundbreaking. Overall I really liked the vibes here and I want to come back to try more of their menu items.
I had reservations for 5:30. My family checked in at 5:15 and they were told there would be a delay. When I arrived at 5:20 I checked in myself. I walked up to the hostess podium and I was ignored. Then I said that I was checking in for 5:30p reservations and the hostess said " that's gonna be much later than. I'll probably get your party in closer to 6:30p." Obviously I was upset by this response since we drove over an hour to this restaurant for the sole purpose of a celebration of life. If reservations were going to be ignored then I would not have bothered making them in a timely matter as I was instructed to do by the organizer of the evening. I basically got the brush off like there was nothing they could do since people were not leaving (including walk-ins) after a 90 min dining limit was posted outside. I was very peeved about this response and said clearly that is not my problem yet I am being penalized. My first encounter with the hostess carried throughout my visit. Our servers name was Linda and she took our drink order as soon as we were seated, however it did seem to take a while for our drinks to arrive. Apologies were made again for the wait but at this point it was clear there was gonna be an issue throughout the meal. I ordered a Caprese salad with brussels sprouts to share family style .When my salad arrived there was no basil. It was just mozzarella and tomatoes, balsamic and olive oil with a dried herb sprinkled on top. When I asked my server if this is how the Caprese is served she said yes. I never had a Caprese with no leaves of basil. Needless to say it's not what I wanted nor expected. My sprouts were dry and overcooked. Linda was truly trying to be accommodating. I could tell she is working very hard to satisfy our group despite the fact the restaurant was packed. Linda was great. We decided to share key lime pie and the warm butter cake w/ ice cream and raspberry sauce. The key lime pie was fine. The warm butter cake was a bit different as it had a hard sugar top. Ice cream with raspberry sauce on the side as well as below. It was too much sauce for my taste. More like a jelly doughnut. My blueberry pomegranate margarita was the best part of my meal. There were so many things that may seem small but were enhanced because I was already upset. The fact the restaurant overly committed and couldn't handle the amount of people was a real issue.
I can only speak about my food. Since they claim they have the best fish & chips that's what I got. Fish, nice big pieces. Perfectly battered and crispy. The fries were seasoned well and maybe a little battered to lock in the flavor. It came out piping hot and fresh! So, yes I agree. The BEST fish and chips! Coleslaw was bland and had raisins. That visually was a turn off for me. Coleslaw didn't have enough dressing and was more like a cabbage salad. I don't remember any condiments on the tables. It would have been nice to have at least salt and pepper. Other items my table ordered: Caprese salad NO basil. You really can't call it Caprese salad then. Brussel sprouts. They were okay but definitely had too much of a "roasted" flavor (aka burnt). I could only eat a couple. Cioppino was okay. Again I wish it had more garlic and flavor. The sauce seemed more like marinara than a wine broth. We were there for a luau memorial. One of the regular musicians wife passed away. She was a regular and loved person at Simply Fish and in the Hawaiian community. We made reservations like we were instructed to do so. When we checked in ON TIME, we were told we would maybe be seated in an hour. The hostesses were kinda flippant and dismissive to the fact we followed the rules and made a proper reservation. They even said in front of us that more people came than expected who did NOT have reservations. It was the attitude of the hostesses that were unprofessional. I understand it was a memorial for a VERY loved individual but why punish the people who followed the rules? We did make a reservation. We did get seated only because another member of the community gave up their table and left early. It was a crazy busy night. Our server Linda was fantastic. She was still able to deliver fast and efficient service. We really appreciate her aloha and service. She was very fond of Auntie Consuelo too and it really showed. She was really helpful in ordering our food. The rest of the table wanted dessert. They ordered key lime pie and butter cake. I think the key lime pie was the better one of the two because that disappeared first. Butter cake looked like they torched it like a creme brûlée. I'm no pastry chef or connoisseur but that butter cake did not look like a butter cake. Calling the processed sauce coulis doesn't make it taste better. It still tasted like it came out of can. For MY food and service, it would have been 5 stars. All the food overall took away the 2 stars.
How did I not know about Simply Fish Seafood sooner?! Think of California Fish Grill on steroids! I'm so glad my friends introduced me to this place, and we even got seated next to the owner, Derek, who was so pleasant, kind, and humble. He and his staff went above and beyond, and made us feel so special. We came on St. Patrick's Day, which was perfect for their Taco Tuesday specials. We ordered a ton of food, and nothing disappointed. Every dish was fresh, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. When it comes to seafood, it is usually a hit or miss for me, and items such as fish are easily overcooked. Not here. We got the CIOPPINO $22, with fettuccine $7 extra, ROCKIN' SHRIMP TACOS $3.50 each, a battered fish taco $4, a FILET MIGNON TACO $4.50 (special prices on Taco Tuesday), SHRIMP TAQUITOS (5 for $12), the WARM SEAFOOD SALAD w/ lime vinaigrette $23, and the SEABASS with rice/French fries $16. My favorites include the cioppino, Rockin' shrimp tacos (their best-selling taco), the shrimp taquitos, and the warm seafood salad. The tacos were huge and delicious as well. The fish taco was a little salty. Their menu is extensive, and they even have a SECRET MENU for more options. Could it get any better?! They even have LIVE ENTERTAINMENT on Wed, and Fri through Sun, although reservations are required on Fridays I believe, for their Tribute to Frank Sinatra and their classic 70s/80s/90s night. I definitely need to come back soon. This may be my favorite place in OC for seafood now. Fine dining quality at an affordable price, not to mention huge portions and great value! I haven't been here in a while. Came back recently and noticed Simply Fish went upscale :). They have live music at dinner time. One-man band. Good entertainment. My spicy salmon salad was good but it would have been nicer to get the center cut of the salmon instead of end pieces. Salmon was a tad fishy. 4/5 My husband had the fish & chips and that was good. 5/5 Service was good.
Good seafood and friendly staff. The space is one room with a high ceiling, but it felt cramped with how close the tables are to each other. Long wait time for dinner when we went on a Friday night, and service was a bit slow since it was packed, but staff eventually checked in to make sure we got everything. Orange roughy with fries and grilled zucchini: 3/5. The fish tasted plain, as it was very mildly seasoned. The creamy sauce was quite skimpy, and it didn't really add much flavor to the dish, but the lemon helped a little. Apps/sides such as clam chowder, calamari, and breaded scallops: 5/5. We enjoyed these a lot - they were addictive and had great textures. Definitely group pleasers. Location is in a small plaza off Harbor Blvd and Adams Ave. Free parking in the lot is available, and we didn't have any issue finding a spot even though it was a busy in the plaza.
Sorry to say our second trip was marred by the purchase of their supposed huge lobster tail for about 70 dollars. When it came it was the same size as the ones they sell at Costco. We got taken but didn't complain because it was a birthday party and we didn't want to spoil the event. The salesman/waiter duped us and now we will never come back.
I've had this place bookmarked for a while, and decided to come in on a Friday at 2:30. Lucky for me it was happy hour menu! We tried the lobster roll and that was $35 if you get two it's $60. I got the three taco selection and for happy hour. It's only $12. Even beers on draft at happy hour is six dollars each, which are all really reasonable prices. The menu is huge. I had a hard time deciding and thoughts and this was my first time I wanted to give something off their happy hour menu a try. Their service is excellent and they have a live. Frank Sinatra impersonator on Friday evenings and a jazz singer on Saturday evening evenings. The place is fairly large cozy and has a diner type feel . I wouldn't mind coming back to try other dishes .
Last night my family and I went to Simply Fish for dinner. I've been passing it on my way home for years and always meant to stop in, and this finally gave us a reason to go. My sister had the clam chowder bowl. Both of my nieces ordered bowls as well--one had a rock shrimp bowl and the other had a salmon bowl. I ordered the filet mignon skewer with a 4-ounce lobster. We also shared the sampler as an appetizer, but I didn't get a photo because it disappeared pretty quickly. Everyone really enjoyed their food. They had live music playing, which was actually really nice. When we arrived around 8:30 PM, the restaurant was very full and we got the last table, but we never felt rushed. We were able to take our time, enjoy the music, and relax. My skewer was tender and well seasoned. The lobster was small since it was a 4-ounce portion, but the meat was still very tender and flavorful. As for service, our server was very kind but a bit forgetful and on the slower side getting things back to us. That could have been because it was busy when we first arrived, but even later in the evening when it had cleared out, that was still the case. He may have been in training, so I'm not holding it completely against him. There was another man and woman who came around and delivered our food, and they were much better. I won't take off any stars for the service, but I do think a little more training would be helpful.
We drive from Anaheim to Costa Mesa because my husband LOVES the fish 'n chips at Simply Fish. He considers himself a fish 'n chips expert, so that's a high recommendation. I have tried many other entrees (I love their scallops, as they are always cooked perfectly) and found them all to be delicious. Don't miss a side of their Brussel sprouts-- they are amazing!
I can't believe I've lived in Costa Mesa for almost a year now and have only tried this place today. The menu is vast and there is a choice for everyone. We ordered the Sunday special which had lobster and steak on rice. My god, what a deal. Service was amazing and we never had to wait too long to have someone come ask us if we needed anything. We made same day reservations for 4 pm on a Sunday so it was not too crowded. The place is very clean and the vibe felt like a local gem seafood diner. Parking is plentiful. We will definitely be back.

We came here on a Sunday evening for an early dinner date. We were dressed casually in jeans and T-shirts and were seated right away with no wait. Our waitress, an older woman with a noticeably raspy voice, started off with a dismissive and rude attitude. When I asked about the seafood boil and tacos, she seemed uninterested and acted as if answering basic menu questions was an inconvenience. Her tone and facial expressions made it clear she wasn't engaged or interested in serving us. However, when my partner asked about the Brazilian lobster, her demeanor changed completely. She suddenly became friendly and attentive. We were told the Brazilian lobster wasn't available and that only the Maine lobster was offered at $99, which my partner ordered. After that, the service shifted dramatically. She became overly attentive -- almost hovering -- which felt inconsistent and insincere compared to how we were initially treated. The drastic change in attitude made us uncomfortable. It felt like we were being judged at first -- possibly because of our the way we were dressed -- and then treated differently once a higher-priced item was ordered. OMG!!! The best seafood restaurant I've been to in years! My wife and I ordered the octopus tentacle appetizer, sea bass, and the warm seafood salad. The chimi churi sauce that came with the octopus was delicious and the octopus itself was cooked perfectly. The sea bass came with a mild sauce, roasted corn, and a really tasty coleslaw. The star of the meal was definitely the warm seafood salad; full of shrimp, calamari, muscles, clams, white fish, and salmon on top of a fresh bed of spring mix greens. The lime vinaigrette dressing was the bomb!! Can't wait to go again. Simply Fish is simply amazing. read more

Came here during happy hour. It was pretty empty. But totally worth the happy hour. We were able to get so many items for such a good deal!!! I'll go in order from my favorite to least favorite apps lol. The fish and chips are to die for!!! Omg they were definitely the best thing on the menu. (my favorite but not my friend's favorite). The clam chowder was so so amazing too and my friend loved it!! It is more creamy and thick, which I love!! Next, the poke nachos. Great overall. They give you a lot of fish!! And the chips were nice and crunchy and perfect for the poke. My friend thought the poke could use more of the sauce but I thought it was fine! Next the calamari. I was not impressed. It was very chewy and rubbery, more than usual. Not sure if it's due to the shape - it looked more like mozzarella cheese than normal calamari. lol. It was ok. Would not order again though. Then, we got the blackened ahi tacos and those were a bust. I do appreciate how large the fish chunks were. These were definitely huge tacos. However they were really really dry and just not great. And finally, my least favorite were the steamed clams BUT I don't like clam in general!!! It came in a little tea pot which was cute and the server also gave us each a bowl of the clam water which was kinda gross and tasted so fishy Lolol. The restaurant was well decorated and clean and the service was excellent. There were many dishes listed on the menu. I were able to get the Blackened Salmon Salad for $16 since that's the special of the day for Saturday. The salad dressing was very nice and the waitress provided a bottle of the Lime Venaigrette dressing in case we needed more. The salad was a premium salad that included candied walnuts, pumpkin seeds, and heirloom cherry tomatoes. I enjoyed the salmon salad so much that I got it again the following day. My son got the Fish and Chips which came with french fries and cole slaw. He appreciated the fact that the coleslaw was light on the mayonnaise; We were pleasantly surprised to find raisins in the cole slaw. We asked that no additional salt be added to the fries and that's the way it was served. Excellent taste, atmosphere, presentation. Fresh and premium ingredients! This spot was actually a big surprise for me as it appeared to be a casual order-at-the-counter then take a seat vibe, but turned out to be a fancier sit-down restaurant with a server. They even had a live musician playing guitar! I ordered their fried seafood platter which came with crab cake, calamari, fried shrimp, fried scallops, and fries. It came with side tartar sauce and salsa. I also tried their dover sole special and orange roughy entrees. Both fish plates were delicious and filling. Service was nice and attentive as well. First time at this location and chain and I had a wonderful experience! I went for lunch with my colleague on a weekday and we were seated right away! I was worried the prices would be steep because it's a sit down restaurant and looked a little fancy. I was pleasantly surprised by the fair prices and generous portions! We shared the ahi poke tacos and they were very good! The ahi was definitely good quality and served fresh! My friend ordered the clam chowder bread bowl and it looked really good! I appreciate how they really hollow out the bread bowl so you have more clam chowder to enjoy! I ordered the shrimp pasta and I loved it! The shrimp were cooked to perfect and the Alfredo sauce was absolutely delicious! And just in case you're not feeling fish but are in the area, I still recommend trying them out as they have some good looking chicken and steak dishes! I highly recommend this restaurant. We found this place while running errands in the neighborhood. Service was amazing. Our server was so attentive and helpful. Made some really good suggestions and everything came out perfect. Shrimp taquitos and poke for starters. Salmon salad, fish and chips, and scallops plate for main entree. Big servings and good for sharing. We ordered out just to try their food and it didn't disappoint. The food was fresh and delivered quickly. We got the grilled fish tacos that included two sides and a drink. It was also a buy 1 get 1 free! We also ordered the battered fish tacos with rice and black beans and a side of grilled corn. Everything was super tasty and the corn was the perfect sweetness. Tacos are the size of a large corn tortilla and filled with cabbage, fresh tomato salsa, and a crema. We also tried their Root beer, which came with that wonderful crunchy ice. Can't wait to try some of their other menu items including their grilled veggies. read more

Big servings! We came for lunch before hitting the road and what a perfect new spot for us to visit. We had excellent service. All the items we had were amazing, fresh fish, cooked just right, lots of flavor, the only thing I was not impressed with and was super dry were these cooked breaded oysters, should have just gotten like the fresh ones with lemon. We stumbled upon this restaurant because it was nearby and dog friendly, so we decided to give it a try! Walking in, it was very lively in there! They even had live music to play for all their guests, which sounded really fun. We had our dog with us, so we were seated outside, which luckily wasn't too cold at all. Our server Linda was the kindest server I have ever met. She gave her best attitude towards us and even thought about giving a water bowl for my dog! She gave great recommendations, which we ended up going with the clam chowder bowl, charred Spanish octopus, and the fish and chips. The service was a lot quicker than we thought as well. The food was delicious and everything tasted really great! Well done and hearty. Linda's service definitely made our experience really well worth it here. Usually when seated outside, I feel that we may be easily forgotten, but she checked with us periodically to make sure we were doing okay. Especially we were the only ones outside. First time here for a Saturday night with friends based on their recommendation. What a wonderful experience. Linda was super nice and helpful. She helped with food recommendations and made us feel right at home. I tried the special (Cajun salmon salad). It was absolutely delicious and an amazing value ($13) that is unheard of today. I got to try my wife's white fish ($12) and her sides including the corn was delicious. We will definitely be back again! read more

Reasonably priced fresh seafood is one of the hardest things to find. You have to find a place that has the business connections to get fresh fish at a good price. This is one of those places. They have an extensive menu of fresh and fried seafood as well as choices for those that don't eat fish. I have been jonesing for fried clams for a while and was happy to see them on the appetizer menu. Probably not the best test of their fresh fish but it satisfied my urge. The lobster bisque had chunks of lobster and was well balanced. My friends who went with the fish and chips were very pleased. The place was very busy on a Tuesday at lunch. Maybe they don't need this review! They have areas that can accommodate larger groups. read more

This place has such a cool and chill vibe! They have live music themed nights, which can be really fun. The menu is extensive and the portions are really good for the price. Our favorite was the seafood sampler appetizer. The fettucine alfredo was decent, though it got rich and too thick for my liking halfway through the meal lol....another person got the poke bowl with greens and there was so much poke! I still prefer other poke places but you can't beat how much came in the bowl. read more

My husband and I found this place on Yelp and gave their happy hour a try. We tried the clam chowder, crab cake, calamari strips, fish&chips, and tacos. Their HH menu had a 3 for $12 taco deal and it was good! We got the battered shrimp, battered fish and ahi tacos. The fish and chips were good as well! I liked the fish, it was a good size and the crispness was perfect. Crab cake and clam chowder were really good as well, very flavorful! Service was great! The owner/management came by to wish each table a happy Valentine's Day which was really sweet. Our waters were always refilled. We were seated right away at around 4:30 pm. Ok, affordable delicious seafood that also has a sit down family-friendly atmosphere. Didn't think this could exist but it does. Exceptional service, lots of seating, big TVs, and kid-friendly. And the food. YUM. They have poke and ahi options then there's grilled or fried fish options. Literally something for everyone. Sides are ample and we Enjoyed the grilled corn. Loved the Chilean sea bass. Octopus appetizer was cooked to perfection not overly chewy. And for those who are not of the pescatarian mindset, they have steak and chicken options. Kids menus with pasta also exist. Like I said, there's something for everyone. Prices are not insane and allow you to enjoy a good seafood meal without regret. Oh, and they also serve Cheesecake Factory cheesecake for dessert. read more
