Fresh veggies with a really good peanut dip. The coconut shrimp was equally delicious and legit. I love when it's hot and crispy on the outside, and you can tell that they made it to order. It wasn't just sitting there on the counter, getting soggy. The pineapple calamari was a great choice for us to share, and I'm glad we got to try it. We ordered both veggie and beef pho, but I only had the beef pho. The broth was tasty and savory -- just the way I like my pho! If you can enjoy the broth even without adding any Sriracha or other sauces, then you know that it's a good broth. I usually do end up adding sauces later, but that's just because I like the extra kick. Finally, the namesake dish: Simply It Beef. The beef is tender and juicy, and the seasoning / sauce on it is really really delicious! If I were to come back here, I'd get this dish and the pho. And maybe the spring rolls. Food: The food was alright. It doesn't taste super authentic but I wasn't expecting it to, so it met expectations. The vegetable pho broth tastes really bland, so I'd probably get a dish instead of pho next time. We also had a beef pho and the broth tasted better for that one. We got the spring rolls and, while small, they are good appetizers to share! And the lemonade you get for free for checking in to Yelp is extremely watered down. Service: Despite it not being too full, the service was slow. We didn't get menus until a couple minutes in, and we ordered two phos and the spring roll appetizer. The pho bowls came first, after a bit, and then the spring rolls and then finally the vegetables and sauce for the pho. Seemed to be in the reverse order of what you'd expect. It was frustrating since we were hungry and that bowl of pho was sitting there in front of you but we had to wait to get the vegetables and appetizer for several minutes and the pho had gotten cold. Atmosphere: Quiet enough to talk, and probably a nice date spot if you don't mind the slow service and average food. I was craving pho, but I wanted to try a new restaurant. I ordered through DoorDash, and delivery was fine. However, the food was a huge disappointment considering the 4 stars on yelp. The beef pho with meatballs was average, but the soup was super salty. The portion of noodles was small, and they also forgot to include hoisin sauce. The Seafood Rangoon is not a typical crab Rangoon- exterior isn't crispy enough and interior stuffing was strange (crab, carrot savings, bits of squid?, and very little cream cheese). More cream cheese would've made the texture better. The Stir Fried Green Beans and Mushrooms were slightly undercooked, still hard and crunchy. Whereas, the Glass Noodles were slightly overcooked and soggy. I wish the vegetables weren't also carrots and green beans like the previous dish, so it'd be different (and didn't have only 2 pieces of broccoli and snow peas, for example). The rice seemed to be a day old or so, not fresh and was quite stale. The Pork Dumplings were decent, but even these weren't anything special and probably frozen... I ordered the Sate Calamari lunch special and it came with a soup, salad, egg roll, rice, tea, and dessert. All for just $8.50! Not a part of the meal was downplayed. The calamari was very succulent, tender, and tangy. It was very well marinated into the chili garlic sauce which was mildly spicy. I just couldn't stop digging into the dish! I went to "Simply It' for the first time tonight. I was complaining to a friend of mine that I can't yet find a good Vietnamese restaurant that compares with a place in St. Louis that I LOVE! She took me here, and it was hands down, one of the best meals I've had in Chicago. I figure when I go back a few more times, and if the food is as good as I've had it tonight, I'll up my rating to 5 Stars from 4! I had #36 or 37(I forget which). It was a chicken dish in a mild ginger sauce in a pot, served with rice. It reminded me of traditional French cooking actually. Everyone expects Vietnamese, Thai, Chinese cuisines to be saucy and messy and complicated with all sorts of flavors. This chicken dish was utterly simple, tasty, delicious, satisfying. It was healthy food that filled you up in a good way, not stuffed. I love the garnish of onion which I mixed in with my rice and chicken. It was tender and fresh.... I agree with Beth R, it is a place I could eat every day, eat healthy, and interesting every time. The Avocado Wontons (prepared like "crab ran goons") were fantastic. They weren't purchased frozen, they were made there! There was a creamy consistency in the filling that was so delicious. It had flavor, it wasn't covered in old grease flavor from a fryer that's rarely changed. You can tell they change the oil in the fryers often, because the taste is simply the taste of the appetizer sans everything else on the menu! The dipping sauce was perfect, it was sweet, but not saccharine, and not too sweet for what it is!! If you're on Lincoln, this place is well worth visiting. We wanted to try Vietnamese cuisine, one of my friends suggested this place. The place is really nice and cozy. Waitresses were warm and welcoming. We ordered a number of appetizers: spring rolls, egg rolls, dumplings and avocado wontons. I liked the dumplings the most. These are called momo in south eastern Asia. In the entrée I ordered Caramelized pork and egg with rice. It was very sweet, I wouldn't have that one probably again. My friends ordered beef noodles soup. It was delicious they said. However the quantity is very filling. I couldn't finish the pork pieces. The whole experience was nice. One last thing, if its possible check in on yelp right while you are there, you will receive a free lemonade. I checked in on yelp and got one. Simply it is supposed to have some of the best Vietnamese food in Chicago. I have to say that I am a fan of Pho Xe Tank myself, but Simply it is closer to me, and may become my new default place. I had a groupon when I came here and they said I could get the lunch specials and appetizers. The special comes with soup and salad and fresh fruits for dessert (great touch!) and it gets really filling. I had to take most of the food from the entrée home. I had the lemongrass beef appetizer- so fun, cos you get to make the dumpling yourself, with the rice paper and the veggies. All the veggies were super fresh and the beef had an interesting spice on it but strangely, it comes cold. I wasn't sure about that part being right. We had the beef mango- very interesting mix of flavours and the mango was delish. We also had the ginger chicken, which is just a basic chicken dish, nothing different or fancy, but well made. The place itself is simple, clean and airy, with some unique touches- I personally liked the lanters on the lights. The broth has no flavor in it, I would guess a soup with seafood would taste rich and umami, but it is just boiled water with couple pieces of fishcake, two mussel meat and one half cut shrimp. There's just NO FLAVOR!!! And we waited more than 30 minutes for the Pho and noodle to be served, when there isn't much crowd in the restaurant. Dude. Amazing food. and BYOB. I come here on a semi-regular basis with my friend who knows the owner. I have also come here with friends who don't know the owner. The service is always timely and staff are very attentive. If your water glass is 3/4 full, believe me, in a few minutes it will be full! I haven't been here without people who aren't already familiar with Vietnamese food, so everything that gets ordered is shared and is tasty. Recently had a mango beef dish, that was AWESOME. Since I was late for dinner, I don't know the name of it. The pad woon sen type dish has real crab meat and is the tastiest version I have had. I always leave here needing someone to wheelbarrow me home. Love coming here, and there is no corkage fee. It's great for catching up with friends since the staff doesn't rush you. We've shut the place down before (just 5 people) and the staff is really nice, never complains, and they always thank you for coming! I was craving Vietnamese food but could not find high quality restaurants in Downtown Chicago. I saw this place on Yelp and wanted to give it a try even though it's a bit of a drive. The inside of the restaurant wasn't promising because it's a little old and run-down. But the food is beyond that. The salad and spring rolls are super fresh and a perfect appetizer before the main course. I was blown away by the Vietnamese crepe and order it every time I went back. The sauce that comes with it is very mild, so you can pour according to your preference. The glass noodles were also great and has large portions. Did an order for pick-up via GrubHub early Sunday evening and again would give 3.5, but even closer to a 4 this time because of their service. Food was ready in half an hour which was perfect timing. When I entered the place, the most delightful Asian man (likely owner) just told me to be careful, as it is a little heavy and he was sure to double bag my order. He then wished me well. Didn't even dine in and already great service! The fresh, fresh, fresh veggie roll was very fresh indeed. Very much enjoyed this light and refreshing roll. The chicken egg rolls, however, were quite meh. I get the pho with eye round beef and well done brisket, XL. I was delighted to see that most of our orders were wrapped in plastic wrap to ensure warmth and prevent leaking. It was nice that my XL noodles came with 2 cartons of beef soup with the appropriate amount of meat. Next time, I would not order the beef in a to-go order, as it comes rare, as you are supposed to drop it in the piping hot soup to semi-cook. However, though Simply It did their best, the beef just wouldn't cook, as the soup was only warm after picking it up and bringing it back home, but again no blame on the restaurant. The brisket in the broth was severely overcooked. The only thing I actually dislike is their stinginess on the noodles. Good thing I got the XL, as the amount of noodles was enough, but really is fit for a regular size. My sis got a regular veggie noodle, and consistent with my regular sized noodle last time, the amount of noodles is very little, like literally only a few bites. I would get extra noodles if getting a regular size, but you really shouldn't have to. The flavor of the pho itself definitely sufficed my pho fix. Bf had the filet mignon rice dish. The meat was good and cooked perfectly, but overall the dish was very bland. They forgot salt or some seasoning. We added soy sauce and that was just what it needed. What I absolutely loved was that they even packaged the complimentary oranges (2 boxes), which were ripe and sweet. Usually, places disregard that since those are usually just given while dining in. Roasted duck bahn mi and lemongrass chicken bahn mi were very savory and tasty. I've tried complimentary fruit with your food is also a very thoughtful touch! I wasn't expecting mayo in the sandwiches, and there was too much of it, which adds creaminess, but I recommend asking for no mayo to get the best flavor from the pickled carrots and pickles. My next favorite thing from the menu are the lemongrass pork spring rolls (street food section). They are excellent as an appetizer and filling enough for lunch. I absolutely loved this place to meet some old friends/former colleagues I hadn't seen in person since start of covid. It was just the ambiance I wanted for our evening together, and the food did not disappoint. True inside looked fab and that fantastic combination of French-Vietnamese decor. But the patio was the destination -- open, airy, grounded with pops of green plants and a high clear roof ceiling. Perfect. Had the crepe wraps, which were messy as expected and provided an interactive moment for us all, the mango shrimp salad, which was crisp and refreshing and am satisfying, and the dumplings, which had the perfect one-sided grill. Paired with the ginger cocktail and it was ideal. We were by far some of the youngest in the dining room which was odd, but we were there early on a weeknight. Definitely recommend. The food is incredible and never fails to make me feel at home again. The service is always great and everyone is so friendly. I highly recommend the avocado wontons, the lemongrass pork bahn mi, the fresh fresh fresh vegetarian rolls, and the tofu and eggplant. The pho is perfectly soul-warming. The fact that they are BYOB makes it perfect for a fun night with friends or date night! My only disappointment is that I can't try everything on the menu at once, although the leftovers are just as good so don't be shy! Went here with a group of 8 on a Saturday night and was seated right away. The restaurant seemed pretty busy and was hosting what seemed like a Bachelorette party dinner or something. While I cannot fault the restaurant for the loudness level caused by the party, it was very hard to hear people sitting across the table for me. I would like to give props to the waitresses who kindly (with mild success) asked the party to respect the noise level. I personally enjoyed the service itself. Like most Asian restaurants I've encountered, the wait staff would wait until we needed something/ motioned for them before coming to our table. I checked in on Yelp for the free lemonade... Which they ended up giving to our entire party, which was nice of them. I also appreciate that they give fresh fruit along with their fortune cookies (we got a large serving of pineapple and cantaloupe but the fruit selection does change over time ). The owner/manager also was very kind in thanking us for dining with them and did not hesitate to help his wait staff with busing tables for the next party, which was nice to see The food itself I found to be 3 to 3.5 stars. I got the xoi man (sticky rice topped with onions peppers chicken and small dried shrimp) and the duck Banh mi. I really enjoyed the xoi man, as the rice had a sweetness to it that went along well with the dried shrimp flavor. I would've like to have seen more meat on the Banh mi, and some pieces of meat were a little too chewy. However, there was a nice crunch from the daikon/carrot and a good flavor profile from the herbs and spread, which combined for an overall tasty sandwich. A Banh mi (which is decently sized) for only 4.50 in Lincoln Park is a steal in my opinion. The reason why I gave 2 stars is that I ordered summer rolls because there is no bell pepper in it which I am allergic of. However after I got the rolls and started eating, I felt something was not right then found out there was red bell pepper in the rolls. I double checked the menu and made sure there is no bell pepper or mango in the summer rolls I ordered. Mango and bell pepper are supposed to be in veggie rolls. I complained to the waitress. Great unassuming Vietnamese restaurant in the middle of LP! Uncle Tuan welcomes you with such a big smile when walking in it's hard not to be in a good mood. We were sat near the window and were each given complimentary lemon iced tea - what a treat since it was a rare hot day when we visited. We started with the Bon Vivant Platter (sampler platter) and the Vietnamese Steamed Ravioli. The sampler platter was good, but the VSR was so fresh and delicious. It had bean sprouts, cucumber, cilantro and sliced pork roll on top of rice noodles stuffed with ground pork and mushroom. It looked like a lot of food, but we were able to eat the entire dish with ease. For our entrees, I went with the BBQ Beef Short Ribs and my girlfriend ordered the Northern Vietnam Fisherman's Seafood Soup. The soup had a great balance of sweet, sour and spicy and the Short Ribs were not only grilled perfectly, the portion was gigantic! I wasn't expecting 5 pieces of short rib over rice and vegetables. My go-to dishes at Vietnamese restaurants are either the Pho or the BBQ Short Rib - this was the biggest portion I have ever seen at a Vietnamese restaurant. They gave us each a slice of watermelon as a dessert which was a nice treat. As I am a DePaul Alum, I am very familiar with this stretch of Lincoln and is still mostly bars, but to see a Vietnamese restaurant in the middle of the row of bars on Lincoln is nice. When you're not wiling to travel to Argyle St, it's good to know that there is a restaurant of this caliber closer to home. I will definitely be back for their great lunch specials. read more

I've come here several times, and each time I have enjoyed my visit. Obviously, the place is known for its fuh, which is very tasty and award winning. Last time I came though, I decided to get something different and ordered a noodle dish that was supposed to have shrimp, beef, and calamari in it. When it came out, I wasn't able to find any shrimp. I let my waiter know and he went and talked to the chef and owner. The owner then came to my table and let me know they didn't have the shrimp for that dish, so he brought me a complimentary plate of coconut shrimp and shrimp tempura instead. I met up with a friend here and had been craving pho all day. It was national noodle day, and i was on the hunt for some good noodles so i could do my part and participate in this national holiday. It had just started getting chilly in chi-town and nothing warms me up like a big bowl of soup....noodles are just a plus! Simply unbelievable and criminally underrated. The service was absolutely phenomenal and I've never been treated so well in a restaurant before. This place is a true hidden gem tucked away in plain sight in Uptown, and it was recommended by a friend. The inside is adorable and the outside is an even better, city-like environment. I started with a mango margarita, which tasted very good but could've been stronger. We got dumplings and a shrimp plate for appetizers, and everything about the shrimp exploded in delicious flavor. For dinner, my table shared plates of roast curry duck, chicken and noodles, shrimp and veggies, and beef and veggies. The duck blew me away with its tenderness and especially the savory flavors of the curry. The noodles and moist chicken made an excellent pairing. The shrimp was also amazing, and it's really hard to pick a second favorite. The best part was dessert--order the banana bread. It was incredibly delicious and I've been dreaming about it since. Really liked this place. A lot! We began with the Bon Vivant's Platter, which included a bunch of stuff: 2 shrimp spring rolls, 2 seafood egg rolls, 2 tofu spring rolls, 2 veggie egg rolls and dipping sauce. I don't "do" tofu but my friend said they were slammin'; I loved the egg rolls and the dipping sauce is amazing. Next, I had the Sate Shrimp, this super spicy plate of jumbo shrimp sautéed in garlic and chili sate sauce. The shrimp were really large, the spices spicy as all get out (but I'm a bit ole wimpy thing). So so so good. After living just a few blocks from Simply It for a year and a half, I finally got take out from here a couple of weeks ago and then returned for dinner with my parents when they were in town for Thanksgiving. Needless to say, I'm a fan. The quantity of food (of good quality!) that you get for what you pay is ridiculous. For takeout I got the Avocado Wontons & the Beef Pho. The portion of pho was HUGE and fed me for at least 3 meals. I think my total was around $14. They also send you home with some fresh fruit. Even though I only ducked in and out to pick up my order, the guy helping me was incredibly warm and friendly. If you are picking up, there is some 15 minute parking just across the street on Lincoln in front of Halligans and on Belden in front of Swirlz. My family and I came back on a Sunday night with a bottle of wine in tow since it is BYOB - added bonus. The service was a bit slow to start, but there are so many things on the menu we would not have been ready to order anyways. Almost everything we got was delicious - I loved the veggie dumplings & mango and shrimp salad. My parents also seemed to enjoy their meals, except our appetizer (the vegetable egg rolls) were just okay and didn't hit the spot. Everything else was delicious, and I think our total for a LOT of food was somewhere around $50. Also, they gave us some free fruit again at the end. My only real complaint was that the food just came out randomly so I had both my dishes before my parents even got their appetizer. My roommates and I were literally lurking down Lincoln Ave on a Friday night around 10:15 pm. While everyone else was headed out to the bars, we were desperate for some post-gym grub. Sadly, Sublime Sushi was closed early, so we randomly happened upon Simply It as it was open late until 11PM! The place was small without much charm, and service was friendly, but a little slow. We ordered the Milk Green Tea Boba, Pho and some Light Stirfry Veggies (roommate is a vegetarian). Milk Green Tea Boba - superb! not too sugary, but delightful regardless. I was expecting the boba to be disappointing, but was pleasantly surprised by the flavor and texture. Pho - nice broth, large portions, decent price. The meat was slightly stuck together, but I can forgive that. Vegetables dish - super bland, but I guess that's "healthy." Sadly, the brown rice was old and inedible. They took forever making a new bowl and my friend was done eating when they brought out the replacement... Wouldn't seek out Simply It as exceptional Vietnamese/Asian food, but glad to know there's a reliable source nearby when I need it. read more

Dying for pho so me and my cousin checked this place out. TERRIBLE. tasted like it came from a pre-packaged pho packet. Also had a funky smell to it. I love pho, but when visiting Chicago, skip this place. read more

Ordered delivery twice, both times they managed to get here in less than an hour. Fresh ingredients and not greasy like some Chinese delivery food is. We ordered shrimp clear noodles, and shrimp spring rolls. Good, healthy choice if you're in a pinch and don't have time to cook. I love the fruit they throw in for desert. Reminds me of growing up in a Vietnamese house, we always had fruit for dessert! I will have to order again :) read more

After finding out that a popular Indonesian place down the street had a 45 minute wait, my husband and I starting looking for a good place to eat in the Lincoln Park area. We stumbled upon Simply It and saw that it had awesome reviews. We called to see how long the wait was and the owner told us a couple had just left and they could get the table ready in 15-20 minutes. Perfect! Upon arriving (about 2 minutes later), we were quickly seated and noticed there were plenty of open tables including a huge table which was "reserved". We ordered the avocado wontons for appetizer, lemongrass chicken and the chicken curry. About 30 minutes later, the server brought out the wontons and 2 lemongrass chickens. We told him that we ordered only one lemongrass and a chicken curry. He seemed confused and took it back. Another 15 minutes later (and after I had eaten about half my food), I asked the server how long the curry would take. He replied, "About 5 minutes". So we decided to wait thinking they're probably making it fresh and it takes time. But another 20 minutes passed and the server came back saying the chicken curry was never prepared!! We cancelled the order, paid for what we ate and left. I have never experienced worse customer service in my entire life. The server had no idea what was going on and honestly didn't really seem to care. As far as the food goes, the lemongrass chicken was okay but the wontons were horrible. There was basically a big chunk of avocado and a big piece of cream cheese inside a fried wonton. This place really needs to work on its service and hire better servers. read more

Really nice Vietnamese food there! I love rolls&pho there. They're almost tasked like what I had in Vietnam. Bring so much good memory back to me.The environment there is clean and quiet. It's a good place for hanging out with friends and families. The most important thing is the price is really affordable for their quality. I'll go there next time for sure. read more

I had to sit down and sign up for a yelp account just to leave reviews on this place and another. This place is fantastic: The owner seriously the friendliest I have ever seen. Nice complementary deserts and tea even if you order something small like pho. Even for pick ups! He makes sure that you feel welcome when walking into this place and you just want to come back again when he cheerfully says goodbye by your first name (if you gave him your credit card). read more

The food here is 5 stars. My buddy and I went for late lunch lunch/early dinner around 4 on a Sunday. We both ordered the Beef Pho. Damn that was some of the best Pho I've had in town. To get there though was another story. We had to wait, and wait, followed by more waiting. Seeming we were to only people in the restaurant, it seemed strange for Pho to take nearly an hour. We had egg rolls as an apetizer. That held us over for 5 minutes. Egg-rolls were typical. Nothing memorable. The anticipated wait was somewhat worth it seeming it was 18 degrees outside. Wish I would of known this place was BYOB. That would of helped really pass the time. LOL On to service. The service was only 1 stars. I feel bad for saying but I hope they read this. I feel the waitress could of gave two craps about being attentive or anything related to good customer service. She was not mean or anything like that. Just removed. We had to flag her or the bus boy for everything, Then when it came to boxing up our left overs, they gave us plastic quart containers. OK no problem, Right? The container they gave my buddy was used though. You could see stains from some kind of food previously. It looked like they tried to wash it. The lid was warped. Definite;y was used. It was nasty and I am not being harsh only stating the facts. He brought it to the waitress's attention and she replaced it. No emotion, No, "I'm Sorry." Isn't that strange? Weird. I stayed optimistic and not interested in becoming upset. Since I really enjoyed the Pho, I will give this place a try again, but I am going to prepare myself that it may take a while to order the food.
