I've always loved this spot. 5 of shared an assortment of appetizers amd small plates. Garlic shrimp were perfectly cooked: fork tender and flavorful. Chicken kebabs have a great Mediterranean spice served moist with a thin bread and onions and peppers. Their hummus has a brighter flavor than most I've had, and also liked the baba ganoush. I got the shepherds salad, which was okay and quite plentiful. It just wasn't very exciting and kinda expensive considering the lack of meat. It was $15. The service was terrific though. Been wanting to try this ever since I saw pics of their manti and finally did. Manti is simply a Turkish take on beef dumplings. For those that haven't had it, the closest thing this resembles is Russian pelmeni. It's almost as if the two cultures couldn't agree on yogurt or sour cream so they said eff it, we're manti and you're pelmeni. The verdict: very good, but Italian ravioli/tortellini is still the champ. read more

Asiret kebap house is the new restaurant that replaces Sipsak which was the reason for my visit. Too bad they no longer serve simit like the previous restaurant. Among the things we had, the red lentils soup and the two appetizers, ezme (tomato/pepper minced) and piyaz (white bean salad) were good. The falafel was very greasy. We stopped by when we came to visit a friend at the Turkish House. It has a rich menu compared to many Turkish restaurants in New York. We wanted to try manti, but it was out of stock. We ordered mousakka, chicken shish and shepherd's salad. Everything was delicious. Although the restaurant manager was aggressive and rude, the staff were friendly and helpful. Another pre-pandemic review. While this place is probably as authentically Turkish as I'm authentically Indian, the food is tasty no matter how you characterize it. Try the Grilled Portuguese Octopus (Portuguese?) for savory, tangy protein. The cream soup--I forget the exact name--was also delicious, as were the meatballs. Not sure why, but they offered us a complimentary rice pudding dessert to finish off our meal. No complaints, though, as it was delicious. Service was otherwise lovely, and the warm, dark interiors should make any date night full of vibes. read more

What a sad and average place. I hate giving bad reviews but there was nothing remarkable about the food or service. Complimentary bread was Warm and delicious but nothing else was. Service was terrible. The server, who I believe is the owner, was super grouchy and inhospitable. He served as though customers were an inconvenience. I was to see a Turkish restaurant in my neighborhood but this place is not worth it!!! Terrible service. The food was good and the dishes tasty at Sipsak, but the prices are ridiculously high for what you get at this Turkish restaurant. $168.00 for two people including 2 glasses of wine, 2 weak Vodka cocktails, two appetizers and two entrees, is a shocking reminder of how careful you have to be dining in NYC. The room is plain and shabby at best. Service by two attractive women is more eye candy than professional. The ambiance is kind of sad and not urbane at all. I liked the ambiance here, beautiful background music, nice dark wood and white napkins, romantic, very friendly and attentive service. The food was a bit uneven. We had two appetizers, Hummus and Babaganoush and I didn't like either one, I've had them innumerable times and much better elsewhere. I was disappointed that there was no appetizer sampler platter, and each appetizer was very expensive, almost half the price of an entree. The bread was very good, thick and crusty, served with olive oil that had real olives in it. My main course was chicken kebab which was supposed to come with bulgar pilaf but came with plain white rice instead. However, the rice was delicious as was the mixed green salad that came on the side. The chicken was moist and cooked just right. It seems they serve the very basic types of Turkish/Greek cuisine, there were no unusual dishes on the menu. The highlight of the evening was the rice pudding, it was heavenly, pistachio nuts on top. I wanted two. There were several interesting dessert choices. They were not serving any coffee despite being on the menu, so I had to drink tea with my dessert. No body rushed us at all, and they kept refilling water while we were talking. I might go back sometime if I was in the neighborhood. read more

I've eaten here a couple of times. It's usually pretty empty or at least half empty on a weekday lunch, though i'm hoping this isn't the case during other times. It's decorated a bit like a french bistro with small wooden tables, white decor everywhere with a dark wood bar. I don't love the appetizer sampler plate, as the fried items on the sampler are a bit tasteless. The dips are all solid, but not the most remarkable. The eggplant is really nicely pureed, but I've definitely had better. The grilled lamb sausage with hand cut fries is good. The lamb sausage is thinly sliced, pink in color, a little reminiscent of pepperoni, lightly citrusy, crispy, nicely done, not really lamb-y. The handcut fries are perfectly crispy. It's served on a little hot skillet. As for mains, I've tried and just fallen in love with each of the following: - The manti, miniature raviolis stuffed with ground beef in a garlicky yoghurt sauce. They're addictively good. - The ali nazik: yoghurt and eggpplant puree on the base which is luscious and creamy, topped with really flavorful stewed ground beef, stewed tomatoes, and topped with more punchy yoghurt. Two days ago I headed to Second Ave. hoping to have lunch at The Press Box, only to find it gone and the building being dismantled. I didn't have time to search for another restaurant, and Sip Sak was right there; so regretfully that is where i ended up. The restaurant itself is quite pleasant with doors and windows in the front that open. You can sit inside and feel like you are dining outside. I also have no complaints about the service. It is the food that was terrible. The worst was the Kofte, which in some Mediterranean restaurants can be quite good, but not here. It was 5 patties of overcooked lamb with no flavor and difficult to chew. I ate less than 2 and left the rest. The pile of rice accompanying the patties was okay, and the greens were fresh, but had a typical dull oil & vinegar dressing on them. Prior to bringing the main course, they served some bread that was just okay and a little dish of almost stale olive oil with about 6 accompanying olives, which were very good. The two glasses of chardonnay I had were okay but not great. I have no intention of returning to this restaurant. read more

Sip Sak seems underrated to me - it definitely deserves at least four stars if the lunch I had here is anything to go by. We started off with an appetiser of cacik, a thick yogurt dip very similar to tzatziki (sometimes the same thing depending on the exact herbs you include) that was incredibly fresh and creamy and went so well with the bread, which was bottomless and seriously as good as any of our ordered dishes. We also had the manti, tiny beef dumplings in a chilli yogurt sauce, and the grilled lamb chop, which came with an onion/tabbouleh side salad and several sheets of lavash. It was all delicious! Totally embarrassing but I actually gasped out loud when I took my first bite of the lamb chop, it was that good. Its gaminess also paired really well with the creamy manti. We finished everything and rolled out groaning about how full we were. We came right after open on a Saturday but even over the course of the hour+ long lunch there were never more than 3-4 tables filled at a time in the relatively large restaurant. Seemed a shame considering the quality of the food, but also most dishes were a little more expensive than I would've liked for a nice-casual lunch. Pretty sure I'll be back at some point but there won't be a rush. read more

I had dinner at Sip Sak last night and I enjoyed it. Upon looking at the menu, I saw that the entrees were on the pricey side (chicken was $29 and others were more) so my friend and I decided to go with appetizers. This was a great idea! Ordered: Red lentil soup ($8)- the soup was delicious. It was creamy and smooth and the portion size was generous. Borek ($9)- one of my favorite foods on the planet! Borek is like an egg roll but filled with creamy, salty feta cheese and dill. The phyllo dough was flaky and light. Eggplant salad ($9)- this was a dip, kind of like babaganoush. It's good with the bread they serve. I would go to Sip Sak again for an assortment of appetizers. The service was good, the food was fresh and it is a nice looking restaurant. read more

I am a Turkish/American citizen and I have been in U.S. for almost 20 years. By far Sip Sak is the best Turkish food I have ever had. There are a lot of items that are not on the menu and you need to ask ; we got Lahmacun, which was amazing , Icli Kofte which was like Turkish standards in Turkey, Cig Kofte. They have Salgam Juice. For the main dish , I got a Hunkar Begendi , which is a dish with an eggplant puree and tender cube lamb chops. My wife ordered Manti , it is like a Turkish Gnocchi Dumplings. Everything was excellent. For desert ; we got Baklava and Kesgul. Both of them were very fresh and tasty. Best TURKISH Food ! read more

We were hell-bent on finding a unique restaurant for Manhattan vacation day one and waltzed down 2nd Avenue at 9:30 p.m. checking out the offerings. This place, with it's odd name and cozy, fun ambience (marble-topped tables and silver stars swinging from the tin ceiling), caught our attention. A quick look-up on the Yelp app confirmed that we were about to enjoy some good Turkish food, whatever that was. The appetizer section of the menu included a notation reading "mixed appetizer platter is available upon request" and my decision to order it represented my second really good decision of this vacation (the first was my choice of accommodations). The mixed appetizer platter, which we ordered for 3, was a humungous plateful of deliciosity, a photo of which I previously posted. The fresh flavors of hummus, white beans, tzatziki, eggplant, grains, and pastry sticks filled with oozy hot cheese was an explosion of flavors, each more enticing than the last. Everything on the platter went together beautifully (with Turkish red wine), and left my taste buds dancing. So satisfying was that platter (which turned out to be $31 for 3) that we probably should have skipped the entrees and gone straight to desert but we did not. The entrees were good, but couldn't compete with the excellence of that appetizer platter: We sampled a Lamb special, Eggplant Moussaka, and Manti (house made dumplings in a garlic yogurt sauce that was good but too much of a single flavor). I've since learned that this restaurant is owned by chef Orhan Yegen, a somewhat notorious character about whom many people hold strong opinions (think Seinfeld's "Soup Nazi"). Their Hot Yogurt Soup, a couple years back, was listed among the top 50 NYC soups by New York Magazine, which also described a foolproof way to order at Sip Sak: "the appetizer sampler, followed by the invariably lamb-based special of the day". I'll go them one better and suggest starting with some Turkish wine, moving onto that memorably wonderful appetizer platter, and closing out with either more wine or a small dessert. No entree is even needed. read more

We expected much more from this place. First surprise was that the place was half empty on a beautiful and warm summer Friday night. Food is pricey for what they offer. We ordered appetizers and hummus was very blent, more like packaged that restaurant type, especially based on the price. It was not horrible, but I get tastier from Whole Foods. Entries came super fast, definitely it was pre-made and they just heat them up... you cannot do it in the restaurant like that. Bread was good, obviously pre-heated as well. The worst part my fish was smelly. I am very sensitive on the smells, I could smell the fish having "old smell". 32$ for old fish? Also I said I wanted my fish medium, and they brought well done. My grandma and her spouse (I can't really call him her "boyfriend" because A) it's weird and B) they've been together for 20+ years) came into the city to take me out to dinner. He is a vegetarian so it was up to me to find a restaurant to accommodate different dietary needs. Sip Sak had a rather large menu with a lot of variety, I had passed it several times in the area and it looked cute, prices were good, so this was my pick. We ordered... Hummus- Decent. I think being Jewish has spoiled me with a lot of the hummus dishes out there (both at restaurants and homemade by my father), so this one didn't stand out. Smoked Eggplant Salad- This is baba ganoush. Also decent, see above for explanation. Grape Leaves- I didn't try these but grandma said they were good she just wishes they would come with yogurt sauce for dipping. Lentil Soup- Grandma's spouse raved about this, but he loves his lentils. Eggplant Moussaka (Vegetarian)- Great. I'm a huge fan of moussaka and this one took me by surprise. The dish is often very creamy with béchamel sauce or cheese or both but this one wasn't creamy. It was on the lighter side and more tomato-based but it was very strong in flavor. The bulgur it came with was also delicious. Almond Pudding- So...they don't have a dessert menu but they do tell you what the desserts are and this was my pick. Star of the meal for sure. Not too sweet and enough to share between the three of us. Delicious and even a little chunky with pieces of almond in it. Win! Side note: The service was VERY slow and the restaurant was practically empty when we arrived but I'm attributing this to the moussaka which probably took a while to come out of the oven. read more

Fantastic eggplant salad!! Just like the one I had in Turkey! çok lezzetli! The tarama was ok, I had better one at Beyti Kabab. They serve good bread so I kept eating them with my delicious eggplant salad as a spread. The Turkish style croquette (Forgot what it's called) was delicious, and I loved the accompanying tomato sauce. The service was good, and the ambiance was casual and pleasant. We got a nice table by the sidewalk, which was the best spot in my opinion. I'd like to come back again if I happened to be in this neighborhood. read more

We've tried restaurants at every price point in SF, LA, NY, London, etc. THIS place is the best he has ever had outside of Istanbul. He even said it would give chefs back home a run for their money. On with my Mediterranean food craving, my fiance and I decided to stop by for an late lunch/early dinner at Sip Sak. My friend has previously recommended this place to me after finding my love for beef dumplings in yogurts at Pierre Loti. This place certainly didn't disappoint! We arrived around 4:30PM (really odd hours for dining) and this place still had about 5 tables of customers. We were seated in a small 2 ppl table by the bar and immediately asked if we wanted anything special to drink. We opted for tab water and dived right into the menu. After the waitress presented our water she immediately began explaining the specials of the day. In the process, we yelped and noticed the mezze platter that wasn't listed on the menu. We asked about it and the owner himself came by to address any questions. At first by coming over, he was a little intimidating. We didn't ask to speak with the owner or manage or anything.. we just wanted to know if we can get a mezze platter. But later we found him extremely helpful and friendly. He came over multiple times to ask how we were doing and how the food was. Aside from mezze platter for 2, we also ordered the pan seared scallops (special of the day) and beef dumplings in yogurt. The mezze platter came out first with a side order of complimentary warm Turkish bread. There were about 8 - 9 different items. All were extremely delicious. My favorites being the yogurt, the eggplant salad and the roll. My fiance loved the hummus, bean salad, and eggplant+tahini - which I thought had a strong bacon flavor. The only thing we didn't finish from the platter was the artichoke. My fiance thought it was overly sweet for his taste and I was just too stuffed from asking for 4 additional basket of bread. The spread was THAT good. We ate every single thing off this plate - even the spinach leaves they was used as separator/decor? The pan seared scallops sizzled its way to our table shortly after. The order came with 3 giant sized scallops. We squeezed the fresh lemon juice on top.. and the flavor was beyond amazing. Perfectly seasoned with a hint of garlic taste. The beef dumplings took a lot longer to come out. My fiance and I even thought they might have forgotten about the order.. we joked that they prob had to kill a cow in the back for those dumplings. When it finally came out, we were already really full from the bread and mezze (we are the type that can't wait around.. we must eat while we wait lol - wish we have more self control). The beef could have used a little more seasoning but the dish itself was nevertheless delicious. I would say Pierre Loti's was better tho! The total ended up being around 61 before tax and tip. The mezze platter was 21 dollars for 2 ppl. Pan seared scallops was 19. Pretty expensive for an ordinary lunch/dinner date. The food and service were both really good. Wish the price wasn't so steep. Prob won't return for the price alone.. but really glad we tried it :). read more
