Sizzle and Crunch is a modernized/Westernized version of Vietnamese, a welcome addition to the pantheon of Vietnamese places on the Ave. I love my authentic Vietnamese and a hearty bowl of cheap pho at Pho Than Bros, but am always open to trying new twists on things. Sizzle and Crunch's main spiel is offering meats like pork belly that you might not find at your standard banh mi place and putting the most beloved Vietnamese ingredients into a bowl, which seems to be the coolest new way to eat things. I wanted to try their bowls when I came in, as that's something that's a bit unique about S&C, and it looked pretty hearty. I went for the House Pork Chop Bowl, which includes flavorful saucy chopped up pork, some thin slices of pork belly, pickled vegetables, lettuce, cucumbers, and cilantro on a bed of rice. Definitely sprinkle the fish sauce over it and get some jalapenos for some kick. It reminded me a lot of Chipotle's burrito bowls, and I kept describing it as Vietnamese Chipotle. The way the counter is set up is definitely reminiscent of that formula. The bowls are filling and flavorful, and despite the fact that the portions are pretty generous, they will leave you wanting more. Service is fast and prices are reasonable, although the banh mi is definitely pricier than what you'd get elsewhere. Nonetheless, I think Sizzle and Crunch is unique enough to stick out but quality enough to stick around. read more

Went in without an opinion, left feeling like it deserves a head nod. The interior is clean and able to seat maybe... three groups of 4 in the small area away from the register, and additional seating for those who come with a food buddy or as a solo food hunter. We had the Grilled Pork Banh Mi and the House Special Banh Mi. Both of the banh mi baguettes had extremely crisp outside layers and very fluffy under layers. I do think that the timing and heat was intentionally perfected to present such a result. For the filling, the meats were put in without any questioning, but then questions spilled out as the vegetables neared. It was like being at Chipotle - but for better food (I'm a once a year Chipotle type of person.). Let me say that the carrots and radish were done differently, texture-wise, but still delicious! They were done in a stringy sort of way (if you like that feeling). Strings of radish and carrot intertwined into a knot of vegetables forcibly strewn across the wiches. Well marinated, they balanced the sweetness of the Grilled Pork Banh Mi by acting as an acidic component. The Grilled Pork meat didn't have the char/teriyaki-ish grilled look of other banh mi places, but instead was more like Korean bulgogi in appearance; tasted similar too. And they did not skimp on the meat. Much appreciated. The highlight was the green sauce. A healthy dose was slathered on to make juices drip. The House Special (because of its different styled meats) was saltier than the Grilled Pork. So if you're looking for a savory, go with the House Special. Looking for something balanced (sweet and savory), go with the Grilled Pork. (Parking is done alongside the street; good luck!) And so a new [and good] staple for college students is born! read more

Seriously sizzle... and may be a bit of crunch... I am such a fan. It totally reminds me of Chipotle, but with Vietnamese food, and the girl behind the counter is straight up with her reco. Me: what's good? Counter girl (zero pause, very firm tone): pork plate. It's so good that my mouth is watering as I type this. In fact, it's so good that I smell its delicious goodness in my sleep... Totally solid place for a quick, satisfying bite. Their brisket is so tender and flavorful--much better quality than other restaurants with a similar concept (i.e. the chipotle-style assembly line counter). I really enjoyed this place. As a Vietnamese, I find the traditional viet sandwich shops are a) poorly interior designed and b) flat tasting food. This one really takes it with delish kicks and spin on typical viet style. The owner was also really nice and really takes care to come by and see how you're enjoying the good customer service here is all around friendly and top notch. The price I thought was really fair- they load way more meat and actual food substance than those "cheaper" viet shops that sell for 3$- also those places are notttt clean looking. Tl;Dr one of the best deals on the Ave. Great portions, great flavor, great price. Love coming here. Sizzle and crunch may be new(ish) restaurant, but it's already one of the busiest. The food here is solid, the meats are all good although I personally love the pork. It's juicy and is marinated really well. The chicken is also good although it's significantly better if it's fresh. Having all the vegetables makes the rice bowls fresh and less heavy. The green sauce is amazing, definitely would add to any meal. The pork belly here is just okay. You don't get as much in a rice bowl and it costs more. Flavor-wise its good, but not the best, although I haven't tried pork belly like this before. The workers here are really friendly as long as they're not super busy, which it can be during the lunch rush. Got the pork rice bowl. The meat doesn't taste right, the rice seems over cooked, and the veggies aren't great. My partner got a Banh mi that also felt off. My boyfriend and I really love this place even though it's a bit of a far drive from where we live. Their flavors are delicious and it's great that we get to choose what we want to go into the bowl. My boyfriend usually gets a chicken rice bowl and I like the pork rice bowl. They give a great amount of food, I usually only eat half and save the other half for later. The service is fast since everything is already cooked and available. The staff is friendly, it was a little hard to hear because of the barrier and the masks but we worked through it. I take away a star because there are times when they can be out of an ingredient for weeks (i.e. green onion sauce, the patte) and their health rating is often low. However, I most often get the half salad half rice bowl with chicken or beef and all the veggies. For the price, this is extremely filling. I can even on most days eat half the bowl and save the other half for another meal. My go to lunch spot. This place is popular for good reason. A salad like place with all the good flavors and freshness. I usually get the half salad and half rice bowl with chicken or tofu. I haven't tried anything else but my friends like to get the sandwiches too. One big wish I have is that they use compostable silverware. It looks like it is at first glance. There's only recycle or compost option for your trash and everyone puts their plastic ware in the compost, which is sad to me. My bf and I passed by this restaurant a couple times before it opened and we were excited to try it for the first time today. When we walked in, we were greeted by the employees. They were really nice and helpful! I ordered the House Pork Chop plate and got to choose from a variety of vegetables/ condiments. I liked the cilantro aïoli sauce (I don't remember the name) they had. I also like the pork belly; it's something you don't see in everyday Vietnamese restaurants. However, I do wish there was more meat and a tad bit less rice. However, the portion size is perfect and the price is decent. Technically I would give this place a 3.5. The atmosphere was warm but sort of small. If the line gets to long, it blocks the doorway so it is difficult for people to get inside. The customer service was amazing! They are super friendly and I actually felt welcome. On the other hand, I didn't find anything really special about the food. However, on my last two visits, it became clear to me there are some pretty significant issues in terms of how this restaurant runs its business. They are always sold out of some ingredient or menu item, and when it's a small menu, you'd think they're figure it out by now. I came by Sunday night at 730 and they were already out of banh mis and salads. That's 2/3 of their entire menu!! I settled for a rice bowl, but they were also out of cucumber, lettuce, and green sauce (which is arguably the best part of the rice bowl). So what was in my bowl?
