I'm addicted to Sizzle&Crunch!!!! Whenever I describe this to friends I say it is like the "Chipotle" of Banh Mi's. You can get a regular burrito at chipotle much like you can get a regular Banh Mi here, or you can get it on rice! My personal favorite is the pork in a rice bowl. They have a really wide range of meat options that I think work for everyone/anyone that eats meat (I'm not positive on their vegetarian/vegan options though). While I traditionally get pork, I've also had the pork belly and it was delicious (just a little too rich for my taste every time). I love the pickled carrots, fresh cut cucumber and green onions. My favorite is the green cilantro sauce! I always ask for extra because it's so good!!! There's also an option to add an egg which is one of my favorite parts because it adds just that little extra bit to your bowl. Don't even get me started on the PRICE! You get so much for your money and I feel like I really stretch my dollar here (since I usually get two meals out of one bowl). It's perfect for college students! The only reason why I dock a star is because the food safety rating posted outside could use a little work. Life changing. Think Chipotle but Vietnamese, a long counter that dishes up build-it-yourself plates (or Banh Mi) and you pay at the end. I had the House Special Pork Plate which came to just under $10 with all the toppings included, especially the egg and green sauce they have. I think it's a blend of cilantro, green onion- I can only speculate what goes into that godlike sauce. Now, I wouldn't say that this place is /authentic/ Vietnamese food, but it is conveniently located and totally gets the job done. Anyways, back to my visit. Luckily it wasn't too busy- I had a window seat to myself, but the seating area itself is pretty small. My first bite made my head explode: all the flavors, the egg, the pork, rice, SAUCE. It all came together so well, and there was so much left when I was full! Came in today, there were two guys, one of them afraid of the hot empty rice tray and he was struggling just to pick it up, the manager had to come to help him. But at least he was very polite and say sorry. On the other hand, the other guy was a mess. He doesn't even know what kind of food he is serving. At the pay station, he keep asking me if I want a bag without letting me finish paying. The thing he needs to ask is if I want any sauces for my rice. But he didn't. Man, I stumbled upon this place by accident. I parked nearby the university waiting for the library to open. Then, I saw a bunch of people waiting in line for this place to open around noon on a Saturday. People just kept coming into this place so I decided to grab dinner here. More delicious than any rice dish you can get at a traditional Vietnamese restaurant. Their signature bowl has grilled pork, pork belly (very tender!), and all the flavorful additions you could ever ask for. Apart from being absolutely delicious, it's actually a well-balanced meal in terms of veggies, carbs and protein. There are many details that make it great. First, I think they put rice vinegar on the rice. Mmm. Second, their cilantro lime aioli makes it so there are no dry bites- every bite is moist and flavorful. Third, their pork belly is so tender. Fourth, they do not skimp (this point alone is worth a full star). Lastly, they can offer a generous, delicious bowl for under $10. This place runs with the efficiency of a Chipotle with 55x the flavor- good on them. TL;DR: this place offers an updated version of Vietnamese food that's more delicious, quality, quick, and cheap. I had a great banh mi: the jalepeños were a perfect size and tasted incredibly fresh; the meat (I had pork) was well seasoned and the perfect size; the cilantro-lime sauce was delicious; and the bread was both crunchy and soft. The employees were also very kind and efficient. The next time I went, after hearing everyone rave about their bowls, I ordered a bowl with half rice, half lettuce base (which you have to request) and they were happy to oblige. Next, you choose a meat and toppings, so I had them slap some chicken, jalapeños, tomatoes, scallions, and cilantro sauce on top. The food was again delicious, except the chicken was charred a bit too much for my liking. The bowls make a great meal and leftover snack: great for a busy (or hangover ridden) day. It was our first time here today and once you walk in, it smells amazing. They have a setup like chipotle where you can order it as you like it. First you choose a rice bowl or Bahn mi. Then your meat, sauces and toppings in the end. My husband and I chose a pork bahn mi and the pork rice bowl special to share. While my daughter tried the chicken bahn mi. Let me just say, they pile it high that sharing was a great idea. The bahn mi was so flavorful (aioli sauce is a must), the pork was juicy and all the freshness from the veggies pulled it all together. The rice bowl was so yummy. The pork special was bbq pork and pork belly made with tons of love. Topped on a bed of rice with pickled carrots, lettuce and an egg. Your mouth just waters as they're making it. Don't forget to get the side of fish sauce too. These are both matches made in heaven. I felt like fat bastard yelling at my food "get in my belly." Overall it's a great value, the quantity and quality of the food was amazing. I will definitely be coming back here. Also I didn't feel gross after eating here even though it's look at like fast food. It's possibly healthy fast food if anything. I would give this place 3.75. I heard lots of great things about this place and wanted to give it a try. I do love me some vietnamese food! I ordered the tofu rice bowl with the works on top including the fried egg. (everything is better with a fried egg!) everything seemed really fresh. I live that you can pick and choose to customize your item. Kinda like a Chipotle. Food is about a 4 star because they certainly don't skimp on the portions and for the price. For the interior a 3. The interior is set up like a maze lol. With a ramp that goes to a sit down area. There was no seating. Which is great, just means the place is popular. But it really only had 6 small tables. Overall really clean, the service was good. I would definitely recommend if you want to grab something quick or if your near by. The menu is simple and easy to read. The service is quick and all of the staff were great! I went into this place for the first time yesterday after somebody told me that it was like a Vietnamese Chipotle. I like that the menu here is simple & straightforward, and the restaurant itself is clean. I got the classic bahn mi and asked if it would be okay to put all of the ingredients in my sandwich. They seemed a little bit doubtful that everything would fit into the baguette, but I appreciate that they were willing to try anyways. Typical UW student roaming The Ave, starving but unsure of what to eat; partly because there's so many restaurants and options, and also because most of those places aren't very good, in my opinion. Couple bad experiences have made me wary of The Ave. Anyway, came here by mistake and OMG...so freaking good! Instantly became my favorite go-to cheap lunch spot during the week. I could honestly eat here everyday and not get sick of it. I usually get a beef brisket rice bowl, and everything about it is sooo delicious! The beef is tender, juicy, and so well-marinated. The rice has some seasoning to it as well (or it could just be the juice from the beef - either way it's freakin delicious). They have other meat and protein options, too. I sampled the chicken once, and it wasn't my favorite - still good, just a little too salty for my liking. You can choose from several mostly free fresh toppings: cucumbers, cilantro, green onions, jalapeño, green aioli, and a fried egg (for a .65 cent charge) to name a few. I usually get all of that and top it off with crushed peanuts and fish sauce (you CANNOT forget about the fish sauce). It's a party in mouth. Every. Single. Time. I ate here three times in a row this week, and I'm still craving it. Hands down one of my favorite restaurants right now! They also serve banh mi (traditional Vietnamese sandwiches) and salad bowls, as well as special house signatures. Definitely give this place a try - you won't be sorry! Short version: I like Bánh mì, but I like having my humanity respected more. Long version: The prior time that I went to Sizzle&Crunch I entered the premises, placed my order, was asked to pay and then they started making my order. Did feel a little odd but since I was the only one there at first, I wrote it off. Someone else came in after me and they started making that order immediately. Today I enter and there were four women with their orders already prepared at the register and about to pay for them. There was a young woman on the register and another young man behind the counter who asked what would I like and I told the counter person and he told me it would take "two minutes". This young man did everything he could do to stall but it took a while (longer than two minutes) for the cashier to finish checking out the four women. Three more people entered behind me. A third worker, a man came from behind the counter and asked "is anyone ordering a Bánh mì?" He directed first to the three people who just walked in, then he asked me. I nod while thinking to myself "I thought I ordered one". He goes back behind the counter and nothing happens. The four women finished at the register and all a sudden the young man finally could begin preparing my order, and oh by the way, I could take care of the payment now while he is working on my sandwich. He passed my sandwich off to the young woman who was working the register, and she finished it up and he begin immediately working on the order of two of the people who came in behind me, no delay and no requirement of payment. I'll let the readers of this review speculate to themselves as to why this happened, but it will not be happening again to me at Sizzle&Crunch. read more

A college student's DREAM! There's a lot of authentic Vietnamese food in Seattle, and Sizzle&Crunch is definitely not one of them. That's not to say that it isn't some of the best fast casual Vietnamese food located in University District though and can definitely be split into two meals. Choose from either a banh mi, rice bowl, or salad bowl and select your proteins/veggies (pork, chicken, tofu) to top it off all under 10 dollars! I come here often to stop for a grilled chicken bowl and I'm consistently pleased with the quality and quantity of the food. Unlike Chipotle, whose taste can definitely get overwhelming incredibly quickly, you can control the flavor of the bowls here using the different types of sauces (Fish sauce and sesame sauce). I personally find that using a mix of the two masks some of the unpleasantries of the fish flavor. I also appreciate that the veggies here are crunchy and fresh, which provide a good change of texture from the rice and meats. I've never had any other meat besides the chicken, but it tastes very much like Teriyaki chicken in that the meat is tender all of the way through and doesn't have any of the tough stringiness that Chipotle chicken can have. Pro tip: the runny egg is a MUST! It's extra but it is totally worth it! read more

I was very skeptical when I first heard about Sizzle & Crunch, since it sounded like a Vietnamese chipotle, and I wasn't sure about 'fast-food' type Vietnamese food. However, I think this is a great spot if you're looking for a quick, cheap, and delicious lunch in the U-district! I would definitely prefer to eat this over Chipotle. You can choose to make your own rice/salad bowl or banh mi sandwich - I would skip out on the sandwich since it is more expensive than your typical banh mi joint. I've been here twice and have gotten the grilled pork rice bowl. They actually use broken rice here (a type of short grain rice), which adds points of authenticity. The meat was well marinated and there are plenty of vegetable options you can add. Definitely try their green onion aioli sauce! I want to preface this by saying I used to love sizzle and crunch so much. I've been going for about 5 years now, but today was the day that I had to accept that it's not as good as it was. I stopped in today and ordered one chicken and one pork belly banh mi, both with Mayo and the chicken with no jalapeños. Nothing too fancy. When I get to the register, I heard the lady who was adding toppings tell the man at the register that I got a tofu and a chicken. I tried to interject and say no, I got a pork belly and a chicken, but then the man at the register told me not to worry because they're the same price. The man at the register then wrote pork belly on one sandwich, and chicken on the other, so I walked out with my food thinking that there was just a momentary miscommunication. However, when I sit to eat my sandwich, it turns out the sandwich marked as pork belly is tofu, and the chicken sandwich has jalapeños and no Mayo. It's finals week and I just wanted a treat for my friend and I. I paid $23 for my order to be messed up, and then when I tried to correct it I was spoken over. I can't really afford to get sizzle and crunch often, so this was really upsetting. I'm not coming back for a long time unfortunately. read more

The pork chop plate in particular is always a win AND definitely get an egg on top. Admittedly, I've never tried the Bahn Mi... I have my own favorite Bahn Mi places in the Udistrict, but I really think these guys put out some awesome plates and at a reasonable price. What happened here!! I loved Sizzle & Crunch when it first opened when they had fresh pork chops with their plates and the perfect fried egg. They also had a large selection of items. When I came in they were not carrying the Bahn Mi Fries and were out of Bahn Mi Sandwich at 2. The place is also filthy now! The kitchen looks like a mess and the place is covered in Rice cookers everywhere ( the hall , bathroom, and soda counter.) The tables were all dirty and overall it felt grimey which is probably why it has an OK C grade health score now. When this place first opened up I thought it would be a Vietnamese Chipotle and now it has fallen off a cliff. I hope it can get cleaned up because it was good at one point! read more

Sizzle&Crunch does fresh, fast, and flavorful and they do it well. I came during a late night rush and the staff maintained a sense of urgency while answering questions and being super friendly. Seriously we were cutting it close to closing but they were super sweet and didn't rush us out or anything (lol sorry!). There's some decision making involved, nothing complicated, but if you're not familiar with Vietnamese food or not sure what to go with you can tell them and they're more than happy to help. Something about quick service food that makes me nervous is that flavor is often compromised. That was not the case here. I got a chicken salad bowl and it was really tasty and fresh. It's always nice to have a healthy salad option that isn't boring! I really am never in the area, but would def go back and try more of their menu. Thumbs up! read more

This place is great! Succinctly, it's a Vietnamese version of Chipotle. The ingredients are fresh, the meat is hot, and the carbs are yours for the taking! Start with rice, noodles, or salad base, pick your meat, then choose your toppings. Toppings include things like green onions, pickled root veggies, lettuce, cucumbers, and jalapeños. I think there are more, just can't recall at the moment. I highly recommend adding the sunny side egg! The sauces are delicious and make the bowl just that much tastier! We found this gem while staying in the U district when coming to UW for a medical appointment. Just a few blocks from our hotel, the Pineapple we walked down and found all kinds of reasaraunts, but this one stood out on yelp. So we got it to go back to the room and man it was well worth the money, one meal could have fed two people and the price was right. Fresh ingredients, good spice and umami. I will go back.
