Yelp will say they are closed but they are open but since the place is small they don't take walk ins and they are always booked. So definitely make reservations. The food is excellent and the service is very good as well. Mushroom crepes are not to be missed. Scallops were divine. We also went for smoked trout and I thought it was too dry even though the flavor was good, should have gone with hamachi instead. Complimentary bread was warm and delicious. We walked from the hotel across the street but there is plenty of parking in the front. Overall a very good choice when you are in Mammoth. read more

Quite a different concept for Mammoth, but very well thought out. Their wine list was carefully crafted and included many European wines. Their food is creative so don't be afraid to try some new things. We got a salmon appetizer and a mushroom crepe to begin with. Both were so delicious. I also ordered a creamy mushroom soup that was to die for. For mains, my husband got the duck. At first he was disappointed about the portion size, but it was so rich and flavorful that it filled him up. I got the steak and it was cooked perfectly. For the pescatarians, they had two fish options-salmon and scallops. I would love to see a vegetarian based dish created by the chef. I bet if chef created a vegetarian dish it would be out of this world!!! Service was good for fine dining and the chef walked around to all the tables to be personable with every one. The actual restaurant itself is tucked away near the Village. I think it was an old garage that they converted into a restaurant. The artwork and photos on the wall were interesting too! Owner and Chef, Ian Algeroen, is always on hand to greet you. Should you wish it, he is happy to offer his valuable insight from a well chosen wine list for wines that might be the perfect accompaniment to your menu choice. The food is some of the best one would find anywhere and such a wonderful surprise to find such elegance and quality in a small town in the Sierras. From the uniquely creative appetizers, the salad and soup choices, the entrees, and the exquisite desserts, the portions are reasonable and beautifully plated, with every bite making one want more. The servers are well trained in fine dining and wine, and your conversations will not be constantly interrupted here. They are attentive but not intrusive. The best meal I've had in Mammoth so far! Wished we had been able to sit in the room with the kitchen because the other side of the restaurant felt a little cold. That's a small complaint though and did not take away from the exceptional meal. Holy moly! One of the best meals I've ever experienced! And this was for a takeout order, no less! We got the scallops, steak, hamachi, salmon. Everything was a flavor explosion in my mouth. I can't believe believe such a gem exists in Mammoth. Having recently visited Scandinavia, I was really excited to try this restaurant. Make no mistake, it is fine dining but attire is very casual. I wore jeans and sneakers and no one batted an eye. My husband and I enjoyed every bite of everything we ordered from beginning to end. Particular stand outs for us were venison sausage on corn pancakes and the scallops. It was perhaps my favorite scallop dish ever. Such creative courses without trying too hard, if that makes any sense. Unique ingredients, but simple dishes. When I made the reservation via text message, I had mentioned we were trying to catch the sunset after dinner so opted to take an earlier rather than later reservation. I found out later they noted that on our reservation, which I thought was really thoughtful to do. The staff was extremely personable. Chef Ian greeted us at the end of the meal, which I always appreciate as I love telling the chef just how much I enjoyed their food. No question we will be coming back here next time we go to Mammoth. read more

Incredible place to celebrate our anniversary! Weird location but service and food EXCEPTIONAL!

Skadi is a true gem of a restaurant. Chef Ian Algerøen has been honing his fine dining chops in Mammoth Lakes for over 20 years. The clean Scandinavian design of this warehouse space reflects the chef's culture and upbringing but also the European elegance of a hand carved jewel box nestled into the mountainside. There are family collectibles, many of them ski related, tucked into corners of every room, including a wonderful vintage menu (in the restroom of all places!) The open kitchen and huge staging area acts as a central hub where waitstaff pull icy bottles of Riesling (GOOD Riesling!) out of a huge communal ice bucket and pour into crystal stemware. This isn't your basic ski town high end resto. No, this if true fine dining! Chef Ian has managed to created the fine dining experience but without the formality of dress. The key to creating this warm and inviting atmosphere is in their control of the reservations. No kids allowed. Yep, they REALLY don't want you to bring your kids. We brought our 15 year old and his friend and felt like we were breaking the rules a bit, but they were well behaved and we received no bad looks. I wouldn't try it with a toddler, they keep track of you... Which brings me to the reservation system. It's via text, to one number. They respond when they can. They aren't always open either. Chef takes seasonal breaks when things are quiet around town. They are unlikely to respond when they are on break (good for them!). Reserve early and always reserve. Holiday and vacation weekends book months in advance. There are NO walk-ins, even though there is a small bar at the front of the restaurant, they take reservations for those spaces. Oh, the food! It's all good, I've never had anything bad. I pick the most seasonal new thing on the menu because I want to know what he is doing NEW and NOW. It is very difficult for a fine dining restaurant to operate only doing to-go orders... the texture, plating, and layering of flavors is a challenge, but SKADI did a great job. We ordered the hamachi, sausage and mushroom crepe to start. We also ordered the pork belly and salmon. When we picked up our food at the scheduled time, it was hot. The salmon skin was CRISPY and all of the sauces were in separate containers so the dishes didn't get soggy. Over all everything was cooked very well and had great flavor. It's been 3 (!) years since I have found my favorite restaurant and I've decided to give an updated review on it with pretty pictures. I'm a foodie but I'm no restaurant critic. That being said, I can say that this establishment has the best quality of food (and quality of chef & staff) I've ever experienced. Ian, the chef, is precious and comes by to check on your table during or after your meal. Gross food aftertaste? Nope. Freshest quality, organic ingredients? Yep. Everything is cooked perfectly and all the flavors on the plate complement one another. I've tried dishes that I probably would not have given a chance if they were at another restaurant only because I trust that whatever comes out will be no less than perfect. Nothing I've ordered has ever disappointed and I walk out more than satisfied every time. My only complaint is that since part of dining area includes the open kitchen, the smell from cooking will get into your clothes and it can be quite strong/tend to linger for a while after you have left. The lingonberry soda and elderflower soda are both great separately but my newly discovered recommendation is a combination of both. It's amazing, seriously, try it! The starter bread is a sourdough I think and comes out warm and delicious. I've always ordered the soups and they've always been great no matter what it is that night. My favorite dishes include the the duck breast and salmon and for the dessert, the macadamia nut & vanilla bean parfait, crème brûlée, gâteau financier (the lychee sorbet is amazing), and the tasting of chocolate desserts (nearly everything I suppose). At the end of your dinner they bring out a small, adorable platter of delicious, assorted cookies. It has a small comforting interior with attention to detail. Very warm and cozy no matter where you sit. They recently expanded so making reservations is much easier now. Parking lot generally has room for your car. I would recommend texting ahead of time to make a reservation as they can get busy. Skadi is a definite favorite place of mine (and my mother's) and we make an effort to drop by every time we're in Mammoth. read more

This was our second trip to Skadi. I should have written a 5 star review after our first visit but we figured we would get the same experience at our second visit. The food is phenomenal. Probably the only true fine dining in Mammoth Lakes. The most recent visit however, was disappointing. Booked months in advance, our party of six visited for my wife's birthday and we were very excited. We were met with what can only be described as apathy when we arrived, hanging up our coats without being greeted for several uncomfortable minutes. While the food was 5-star for all three courses...the service and vibe was palpably uncomfortable. Feeling ignored, burdensome, and generally unwanted....we are unsure if we will visit again. This experience was a stark contrast to our original visit in which we were treated well, visited by the chef, and excited to return. Full disclosure, we brought our own wine (in accordance with their own corkage rules). Unsure if this caused friction but it should not have. Our group of six (including a pregnant woman) was courteous and respectful and would have appreciated reciprocation. read more

This place deserves nothing but a 5 star. We ordered deer heart, hamachi rice, romaine lettuce hearts for appetizers; venison (deer meat) and duck breast as our main courses. The venison was the best venison that my boyfriend and I have ever had, and we have had a lot. It was perfectly cooked! So tender! Most places make it chewy. Also the duck breast was also perfectly cooked, the skin was so crispy, the meat was tender and flavorful. I was impressed! The service here was also very good, our waitresses were nice. The chef was a friendly guy as well, when he came out he kindly stopped by our table to see how we were doing.
