This place couldn't make my custom omelette. Every new diner I go to i have them make the same thing. 1. Asked for an omelette Inside- spinach, onion, jalapeno Outside- tomatoes, avocado 2. Biscuit and gravy 3. short stack of pancakes First they don't serve biscuit and gravy by itself. You have to get 2 eggs with it. Gravy is heavy on pepper, light on the sausage and fat. The biscuit was just gross... might of been frozen. Hashbrowns were burned on 1 out of 3 dishes. Last and most important was they forgot the spinach on my omelette. I did point it out to my waitress and she offered to bring me a side bowl of spinach and I tried to explain to her that just putting spinach onto with the avocado and tomatoes wouldn't be nearly as good and I asked her to have them remake it. By the time it came back they just dumped the spinach on top of the avocado and tomatoes. I refused the dish and left without eating it. 11:30am= arrive and wasit to be seated 12:00pm= seated and drink order taken 12:05pm= drinks arive 12:15pm= order taken 12:45pm= coffee refilled 1:00pm= coffee refilled 1:15pm= asked if we needed anything and apologise for the wait 1:30pm= food arrived and sent back omelette 1:32pm= omelette came back wrong 2:00pm= got the check 2:15pm= they took payment. This was there first weekend but they just were not ready... cooks and waitresses just not in the grove and the food just wasn't worth the cost or wait. Might try again in a month and see if they do any better. For now they get one star for service, quality, and speed of food. read more

We will not be going back to this restaurant!! We arrived and put our name on the list at 11:10 and We waited for a table for 15 minutes which isn't the problem. We waited for 10 minutes for someone to come take our drink order, then waited another 15 minutes for someone to take our food order. In that time there were 3 other parties seated in the restaurant. Once our order was taken within 5 minutes the table across from us, a party of 3 that had been seated 15 minutes after us, had already received their food order. We had been seated for 45 MINUTES and still hadn't received our food while the other 3 parties had already received theirs. I flagged down who I thought was the manager and told her that we hadn't received our food yet but other tables had their food that had been seated 10-15 minutes after us. The "manager" didn't return to us but instead had a server come tell us that our order was being made and it will be ready in 10 minutes! We waited a total of an hour+ at this restaurant then we were TOLD TO LEAVE at 12:14 BY THE SAME SERVER THAT MANAGEMENT SENT!!!! I've returned to Skillets Diner several times since it opened. The menu is extensive and filled with enough variety to keep me coming back for many more visits. I've found the staff to always be helpful and quick to keep the coffee mug filled! While breakfast is usually my favored option... I've found the lunch offerings to be ample in size and worthy of a take-home box! (perfect again for a light supper at home!). We asked for a table of 11 and we were sat within 5 minutes! Ren was our server and she is great! Everyone loved what they ordered. I personally tried the following... Southern Burrito- Chicken fried steak was pretty darn good! ONLY thing I didn't like was there was way to much tortilla for me. I ended up taking it off and had more of a scramble. Country Gravy had good flavor Redwood Club- THIS was absolutely delicious! The chicken was cooked personally and we even asked the owner afterwards what the recipe was. She whispered it to me Banana Cream Waffles- This is definitely something to try. Maybe ask for whipped cream on the side cause it was too much. Son just ate around the edges of the waffles. I scrapped off the cream and ate the rest. It's flavor was really good, fresh bananas too!! French Fries- Perfect seasoning, perfect crunch and you get a lot!! We have given this restaurant so many chances but they just can't get it right. We sat for twenty minutes with drinks and no orders taken. There is absolutely no table touch to check in and the servers don't help one another. After sitting and waiting we finally left when they sat other tables and proceeded to take their orders. If this was an isolated incident, I wouldn't leave a review like this but we've been in several times and it's just never great service. I was a server for years and it's just not worth it. I go here with my dad when he visits me and really enjoy it. We did go to another diner close by but they are so busy and the quality of food was declining fast (aka the bacon). Skillets is never packed and they are quick to get the orders out. The waiters have always been nice and efficient. The prices are also surprisingly good. I ordered scrambled eggs, waffle, and bacon. Unfortunately, it was served on a cold plate. A definite No No, so it had to be sent back to warm up. So the waffle got a little hard. The bacon was poor and I only ate one of the two strips. They need to use sugar cured bacon for better taste. The service was a little slow, perhaps because of a need for more help. The service provider had a good personality. Prefer New Vintage Grill or Jo Jo's near Highland HS for a better breakfast. read more

Very basic meals. Nothing terrible but nothing exceptional either. We ordered the black stone Benedict which is a popular item, the tangler cheese burger, the southern burrito, and the kids grilled cheese meal. I didn't take any pictures because nothing really stood out to me. The blackstone Benedict was a simple eggs Benedict. The hollandaise was made well. We got the country potatoes as the side and they were slightly undercooked and very bland. Not the crispy seasoned potatoes we were looking for. The southern burrito was a breakfast burrito with chicken fried steak inside. A couple points on this is that I don't think the chicken fried steak was previously frozen as many other restaurants do which was great because it was cooked to temp, very soft, and delicious. The inside was just dry being it was steak, eggs and hash browns. However the hash browns were super crispy and yummy! I just think it needed some gravy inside and it would have been much better. The gravy is only served on the outside of the burrito. The tangler cheeseburger was a good burger, cooked properly, and pretty large sized. I did like that they put the bacon in between the burger patties as it kept it from sliding off. It was a little hard to eat just because it was so big and the tanglers are more like pieces of onion rings so they were pretty big and kept falling off. The kids grilled cheese was good sized and made with large pieces of Texas toast, not bad for $5. I wouldn't go out of my way for a trip here again, but it was a fine lunch for my family of 4 for $50. It got us through the day. It said outside it was newly reopened so it may just be working out the kinks still. We may try again in the future to see. read more

The only reason I'm giving this 3 stars is because the food is good. I was here on Monday with my grandson. He had chocolate chip pancakes (with too many chocolate chips), that he did not eat all of it. I had the bacon waffle and added bananas. This was so good that my grandson ended up eating mine instead of his. However I noticed that the service was not so good, and it wasnt even busy. Maybe 5 tables with 2 waitresses. Had an exceptional breakfast at Skillets! First let's start off by commending their spacious dinning room. It was not cluttered at all. It felt very intimate which is always nice. It was pretty busy but we were seated fairly quickly. The staff was very attentive throughout our visit and what seemed like the owner even came by and asked us about our dinning experience which was very nice. The menu has a ton of delicious options. Sadly I couldn't order all I wanted but that just means I need to come back. My husband and I decided to try two of their signature skillets. My husband ordered the chorizo skillet and I ordered the country skillet. They did not disappoint! My husband never finishes his whole plate and this time he did which says a lot. He even said he was full but his skillet was so good he had to finish it. I also enjoyed my country skillet. I feel like it could have used some more gravy so maybe next time I will order more gravy on mine. I did have a few bites of my husbands and I will say I like mine better but it's all in personal preference. I am so happy to have skillets so close to my home ! We've paid way more at other places. We ordered a variety of dishes from both breakfast and lunch menu and all was quite good. I am a vegetarian, and was pleased with all the choices (without me having to change anything, because the odds of it coming out right get lower with that option). Food came out hot and in a reasonable amount of time, Waitress was maybe too attentive, but I will take that over the opposite problem. If you are from Bakersfield, you know that we take brunch seriously on Sunday. I rate breakfast spots on three things: (1.) service, (2.) taste and portion size of the food, (3.) libation options. The service was fantastic. Our server was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu options. She was prompt and attentive. There was a woman I am assuming was of authority standing in the sever station that stared at everyone dining and was wearing street clothes and flip flops which I thought was odd because she looked very unprofessional. The food was average. I ordered the Irish skillet which came with corned beef and scrambled eggs. It was a bit dry; I recommend getting the eggs over-easy or medium to let the yolk run out all over the dish. The server informed me that it is an option to substitute the eggs. The pancakes were a bit too thick for my liking; lacking the fluffiness that I love when eating pancakes and making them difficult to swallow. The portions were a bit small for what other restaurants in the area have to offer. They have a beer and wine license so Bloody Mary's are not an option. The mimosas were disappointing. They were served in the traditional champagne flute glass and were a bit expensive for the amount you receive, which I am assuming is a four ounce pour to make room for the orange juice in the 6 ounce glass. There are better specials in other restaurants for mimosas on Sundays offering bottomless options or the additional mimosa half off. read more

For those that didn't know, this place location used to be Krush restaurant before relocating. I never dined at Krush restaurant so I dont know what type of renovation was done to open Skillet Diner. Anyways, wife and I decided to try out restaurant. The dining room looks open, meaning, it has more open space than tables. It could take a few more tables, but maybe this is what the restaurant wants till foot traffic picks up. The restaurant has a simple look, not a whole lot of decorations, but I liked it. We were attended by our waiter "Ricky" who happens to be the son of the owner and is putting himself thru the academy to become a Sheriff. He was polite, tentative, and not afraid to talk to us. He made sure our water and coffee (French Roast...yummy!) was topped off as he made his rounds. The plates we ordered hit the spot. I ordered the 3 meat skillet and wife ordered the Southern skillet. Food was good. IMO, the plates were well proportioned. I did ask for a side of salsa and I was told that is an extra $.50 The menu has alot of different food selections, so you should be able to find something you like. Good food but weird vibe. Came in on a Monday morning around 1030 and quite empty. Also, no smell of any food.. I want to smell coffee or pancakes.. something. We were seated and it was all so quiet with about 3 workers from what we could see. The kitchen is behind some wall and to our surprise was quite good. Eggs cooked perfectly and the giant French toast was very yummy. Price is affordable and good selection of breakfast as well as lunch.
