Visiting Houston for the weekend we happened upon skippers for breakfast this morning. When we walked in the conversations and the sounds of happy people getting their day started told us we have made the right choice. Now let me tell you, if there's one thing that I love, it's a good chicken fried steak. When I see it on a menu, you can bet that's what I'm having. You just never know when you might come across an extraordinary pounded and fried chunk of beef. Well, skippers had chicken fried steak and eggs on the menu, calling my name and since we were having a late-ish breakfast, that's what I ordered. O.M.G. - let me tell you, this was quite possibly the best chicken fried steak I have ever had in my life. I could cut it with my fork and it melted in my mouth and made me smile all day long. Came here for the first time after both my wife and a neighbor highly recommended it. It's a "seat-yourself" place. Had the Keftania (spelling? Meatballs) with the white dipping sauce for an appetizer and the Gyro sandwich with extra large Greek salad for the main course. They were delicious. The food is fresh and well prepared. My wife asked me to bring home baklava and spinach pies. Too full from dinner to try them now, but looking forward to it when I eventually do. Went with friends for lunch over MLK weekend. The gyro plate a friend ordered was awesome, my greek salad was to die for, and I encourage you to order the fried cheese. I had the regular greek salad, but next time I will go with the country greek salad; it doesn't have the lettuce to get in the way of all the yummy tomatoes, cucumbers and olives. I don't know what is in the dressing that came with my salad, but I could have drank it. My friends had been there for breakfast, but I didn't get a chance to try it. Went for breakfast. The food is okay; nothing exciting. I ordered scrambled eggs with cheese. The eggs were so cold the cheese wouldn't melt. Toast cold and potatoes were mush. Fortunately, I watched one of the owners sit behind the bar at her desk and enjoy her breakfast. At least someone did. Decor is deplorable. It's a bit of heaven with the crisp, cold, fresh veggies, freshly prepared piping hot, grilled chicken, and Skipper's own tangy salad dressing. I was looking for a good place to get some breakfast and based on the advice of my fellow Yelpers, this was the recommended place. Skipper's cafe is the type of place that you would expect to find in a coastal-type town and it did not disappoint. The interior is decorated with family pics and other photos from places in Greece and it even had a few astronauts on the wall. Enough about the inside. Let's get to the grub. I decided to go with a bacon and cheese 3 egg omelette. Nice and fluffy, not over-cooked and it had a more than gracious helping of crispy bacon all mixed within. Tasted great! The cheese was your usual American style sliced cheese and while it didn't exactly wow me, it was still tasty. It came with your choice of toast or biscuit and I went with the biscuit again, based on the recommendations of fellow Yelpers. I have to be honest and say the biscuit was not as good as what the others say, but I am not a biscuit expert, so please do not take my word for it. Another thing I got to try was the pancakes. Thick and delicious, it felt like there was no end to their ability for soaking up the butter and syrup. Bacon was thick cut and crispy. Hash-browns were more like scallop-cut potatoes in my opinion. They had a nice flavor, but had a slight taste of the clarified butter that must have been used to cook them on the griddle. Skipper's is a great breakfast joint and I will recommend it any day if you are in this area. read more

Solid cafe that dishes out some really good stuff, at least during breakfast, which is when I went. Great, larger than average pancakes, big biscuits that are fresh, dense, and actually still warm when they hit your table. Grits that were, well...I think this was finally the time where I realized I just really don't care for plain grits. Don't get me wrong, the grits I got were done right and were just fine, but I'm willing to finally admit to myself if there isn't any shrimp, beef, cheese,...booze, or something mixed in with them, they just don't interest me that much when served plain. But what I did eat (after a little butter up'ing) were, I'm sure, really good. Should have opted for the home fries, their version of hash browns, which looked way more appetizing for my tastes. Next time. Service was good, coffee was good, and prices seemed more than reasonable. Got outta there for less than $10 (plus tip) I think, so even better. They were so overdone and had so much breading on them you cannot even find the meat and the french fries were way under done. Sonny's might be my uptown Galveston hangout, but Skipper's I choose as my harbour hangout. Stopped in this morning and had the fried eggs and corned beef hash. These people aren't messing around. first off, its hard to find corned beef hash as a breakfast selection down here. Second of all it really had a fried briscuit like flavor to it. No mystery meat and filler shenanigans. Fried potatoes were good too. Now, I know, they probably have great Greek food, but just finding a place that serves the corned beef hash for breakfast is exotic enough for me. Fried hash browns were good also, and that was the fastest cup of decaf I've ever seen made. This is the kind of place I enjoy, where the locals keep this place going. Only complaint is I wished the butter came in an iced down scoop, rather than the little plastic dollops, but we shan't quibble. Yet, I can't complain too much. I've talked to the owners before and they're cut from the same cloth as Sonny's (he's old school Italian, they're Greeks). To all the Romantics/Aesthetes out there the best I can compare it to is Little Johnny's café portrayed in The Wire series, but more upscale. OPA! read more

My girlfriend and I went for breakfast on a Sunday morning and between my omelet and her Belgian waffle, the food was great.
