I started comming here a few years ago and have yet to be dissapointed which is very surprising especially how picky I am. The loaded baked potato is highly recomended and the chopped beef is to die for! They will get your order ready very fast but fries and okra are cooked per order so if you order those cooking time can add a few minutes but not much of a problem especially with the quality there is no other bbq place I would recommend as highly as this one. 3-1/2 stars. Service was very friendly. Portions were ample. My ribs were just OK though. The texture was good. But the crust was lacking in flavor and they didn't taste smoked. The sauce was good. Less sweet and more spicy and ketchupy. It seemed popular for a small place. Note that there is no place to sit here and it is a take out only place. Loved the banana pudding! We ordered the ribs twice hoping the second time was better than the first but it wasn't. The meat was well cooked but was dried like yesterday's meat that was left out. The chopped sandwich was saucy and tasted like sloppy joes which I like but everyone else hated. They were very friendly and offered free tastes of their beef and sausage. However, they got the order wrong and gave me a sandwhich when I had ordered just sliced beef. The portions were generous. They didn't ask if we wanted sauce, they just put it on. We don't like bbq sauce. The price was average. Two of us ate for 13.95. The sauce is not good btw. Thin and vinegary. read more

Their ribs are my favorite but I've had brisket and the loaded potato. I've actually never tried any of the sides but if they're anything like the smoked meats then the are excellent. read more

Was driving through Texas on a move from AZ to FL and thought barbecue would be the most appropriate fare to sample on the way. With yelp leading the way we found the quick barbecue stop we were looking for, Slab's. The place is setup for takeout only, just a little counter in front of the kitchen manned by two friendly characters (I believe co-owners) in the end of a small strip mall anchored by a gas station. We got our chopped pork sandwiches and works baked potato quickly. The pork was well smoked and mixed with a fairly light amount of barbecue sauce. I'm not really an expert on Texas barbecue but the sauce was lightly tangy with a savory spice flavor dominating, not syrupy like too many of the other barbecue sauces around the country. No expense was spared topping the rather large potato. Quite delicious and correspondingly unhealthy but I sure didn't care. I think I saw some seasoning blend go in which would explain the extra flavor it had. I would recommend skipping the sandwich and getting the meat on the potato. Finally, we had some fried okra on the side, standard frozen stuff but tasty nonetheless All that (two sandwiches, works potato, okra, and a large drink) for right around $15 is a steal in my opinion. Perhaps not the absolute best barbecue I've had but for the price, friendly service, and speediness this place fits the bill like none other. read more

Oh. My. Lanta. How have I been in mesquite all my life and I'm just now trying slabs?!?!? Went in for the first time today and was greeted by a super friendly guy and he asked what I wanted today. I was thinking b/c it's new and what do I wanna try.....there was chopped beef and chopped pork running thru my mind and the guy said chopped beef or pork? wait how'd you know that?!? Lol! I said I'll try the pork, and fries. While the fries were cooking we were talking about how this was my first time and he immediately let me try a bite of the sausage, pretty good, and brisket, REALLY good. Once I got my chopped pork sandwich and got in my car I just had to try a little taste and man I could not get home fast enough to eat it!!!!! Some of the best chopped pork I've ever had and had such a great smoky flavor!! BBQ sauce is Delish too!!!! Oh man I will definitely be going back!! Cheap and good!! We were looking for something "off the beaten path", and found the recommendation here on Yelp. It is just a little storefront area at the Texaco station right off the interstate. Great little hole in the wall place run by the nicest owner that you'll ever meet! Sliced brisket is oh so good and the sliced sausage? OMG! BBQ sauce? Oh yea.....oh so good too! The baked potatoes are a meal in themselves! Standard basic sides round out the rest of the menu, but the meat there is some of the best that you'll find in town! So as you drive by and smell the great smell of smoked meat go ahead and stop and pick some up. You'll be glad you did! read more

Found this little diamond several yrs ago. Great hospitality and customer service is fast. I always get a slab of the smoked ribs every holiday. Its well worth it and they are meaty and tender. The sliced brisket sandwich is my regular favorite. Everything is smoked to the bone just the way my mom used to make it the old fashion way on July 4th. This place is great! It's in a strip mall next to a gas station and parking is limited. But well worth the trip. It smells like real BBQ should. Their sides are small (a small really is small!) and it's take out only, but the BBQ was delicious. The guys who work there were very friendly, too. My wife & I stopped to eat here yesterday as we returned from participating as brisket judges in an IBCA sanctioned cook-off event in Wills Point, Texas. As judges at the "Final Table" we had eaten only small bites of the top 15 briskets judged in the event , and it just made us hungry for an entire MEAL ! I admit to having pre-conceived high expectations of this establishment from having read the reviews here in the past. I knew it was "take-out" only and a tiny establishment, and was not at all biased about giving the place a try because of those facts. As many reviews here had previously noted, we were greeted and treated with extreme courtesy by the owner who genuinely made us feel appreciated for our business. My wife ordered the sliced beef dinner with sides of fried okra and potato salad. She said her brisket was kind of tough, chewy and dry and the potato salad was "bland" or unremarkable. She did, however, say that her fried okra was really great and fresh tasting. I ordered the "half rack" of ribs ( over $13.00 ) because I did not want to pay over $25.00 for a full rack of ribs I had never tried before. When I asked how many ribs come on the "rib dinner", I was told "three" with two side orders. Since I knew that Springcreek BBQ typically serves me 5 ribs on their rib plate w/two sides at a cheaper price, I elected to order the half rack. When I asked if the ribs were "juicy" and not dried out, the owner produced a fork with a generous sample of rib meat on it that was indeed very juicy and delicious. The owner also generously gave my wife & I each a free sample taste of the sausage they serve which we both thought to be spicy and bland tasting. Upon opening the box with my half rack of ribs in it, I discovered where that "generous sample" chunk of juicy rib meat had come from ! lol. In complete fairness to "Slabs", I must mention that they serve the larger type " Spare ribs" and not the smaller sized "babyback" ribs you get at Springcreek BBQ and many other places. The ribs that I got, ( total of 5) 4 of them were very meaty, had a nice smoky flavor and very little fat. I know that SOMEBODY always has to get the skinny, near meatless end piece of the rack and that was MY 5th rib yesterday, lol. The rib meat on the other 4 ribs lifted easily from the bones & left them "clean", being very tender yet still juicy. This establishment serves a thin, runny, vinegar based BBQ sauce that is tasty but not among my personal favorite types of BBQ sauce . The half rack of ribs was served with two slices of plain white sandwich bread. We also ordered a "medium" sized order of bananna pudding ($4.50 ) that is served in a Styrofoam cup (about 16 oz. ? ) and that my wife says is absolutely delicious ! She said she definately would like to get more of that pudding if Im ever in the area again, and that she loved the fried okra. Although I wanted to try the beans and other sides, at THESE prices I elected not to do so. Since I have learned that it's possible to just pick the wrong time of day to stop and try a place, I hope that my wifes serving of dry, tough brisket was not "normal" since so many other reviewers loved the brisket here. I really enjoyed the meaty spare ribs and I would stop for them again ( And to get my wife the pudding ) if I am in the area for any reason. Having said THAT, remember that I once drove from Dallas to Taylor ,Texas to purchase pounds of smoked BBQ & Mutton for a party in my home, lol. If the destination has excellent BBQ upon arrival, I never mind doing some driving ! On a final note, I liked Slabs well enough to stop in again if Im nearby but would'nt make it a destination because of the high prices (our two take-out dinners w/2 sodas & the pudding was surprisingly over $ 34.00 total ! ) and inconsistency of their products. read more
