We were going to another bbq place but it had an hour and a half wait because of the World Cup. This one still had a line but maybe 30 minutes. Well worth the wait, we ordered a little buffet to try everything and was soo good, the pull pork was the best part, easy and quick to order.. you have different areas where you could eat. The only thing I'm going to say that I didn't think was sanitary, was the lady cutting the meat and putting in on the plate, she's wearing gloves and I was watching her grab all the fridge handles and absolutely everything and also grabbing all the meat with those same hands, all the handles had pieces of meat in it and I found it a little disgusting. Please do something about that. Use utensils to grab the meats..
Was this worth the two Uber rides from downtown area? No. You can find better quality BBQ in downtown at places like Woolfpack's. Can't believe people would wait in line for this mediocre food. Definitely don't do such foolishness. We tried every meat that was available--they ran out of a few things, so arrive early. By 5pm there's a dinner rush line outside the door. At 4pm, we still were able to place our orders in relative peace and quiet. All the meats were just okay and almost underwhelming. Ribs were dry, brisket was super dry and bland [and old], pulled pork was the most decent type of meat thanks to the sweet juices in which it was served. Old, wilted cole slaw was drowning in over-sugared, old mayo. Pipping hot sweet fries were the best part of the meal, which should not be the case at an old BBQ spot such as this. Indoor and outdoor seating available. Both are uncomfortable during hot weather, as there are no fans/ACs, or awning to protect you from blasting sun or stiffling hot air. Not a comfortable experience on a war day when you're sweating bullets and trying to shield yourself from unforgiving sun.
Laid back establishment, food is prepared ahead of time and you get your meat sliced up and your sides done at the counter. You then go take a seat at a set of indoor outdoor patio picnic tables. I got the burnt ends combo which included another smoked meat, and 2 sides. I got the smoked jalapeño and cheddar sausage, cheesy corn and the baked beans. The burnt ends were incredible, seriously no notes. Fatty, smoky and ridiculously tender and delicious. The sausage had some spice and was also nice and cheesy filled, they were also to die for. Then the cheesy corn was like cream of corn but felt like that mixed with Mac and cheese. They were creamy, cheesy and wonderful! Lastly the baked beans were rich, sweet, and had a thick sauce with some pieces of meat thrown in. They were very tasty and a bit overwhelmingly sweet for my palette, but still delicious. I enjoyed my experience here a lot, definitely had my fill as I wasn't able to finish and had to get a to go box to bring the last of it home. Would come back again in a heart beat.
Get in line - you are lucky if the line is on the shorter side, order at the counter, watch the staff cut the meats and assemble your plate, go out to the covered patio, get some BBQ sauce and utensils, grab a seat at one of the communal picnic tables, and enjoy your food. Alternatively, get your food to-go, head over to Strawberry Hill Brewing next door, and pair their beers with your food. I came here for lunch with some friends, and after spending the time in line pondering what to order, I decided to get the burnt end combo with brisket and sides of baked beans and cheesy corn, and three ribs. The meats were amazing. The meat was lean but very tender and not dry at all. The ribs were so good; the dry rub has so much flavor that sauce is not necessary. The BBQ sauces are good. I tried the regular sauce, which is on the sweeter side, and the hot sauce, which is a mild vinegary sauce. The sides were decent. The beans are a little sweet, but the cheesy corn is just right. Slap's might be my new favorite BBQ spot. It is not a fancy restaurant, but it is quality food.
Good solid choice for bbq. Came on a weekday lunch and there was a line but not too bad. Good amount of seating but watch out for the outdoor seating because there's some honey loving bees. Street parking was decently available. The burnt ends were good but the brisket left more to be desired. The brisket was kinda flavorless and felt more like a tritip because it wasn't super tender. I'd definitely prefer Texas style brisket. Sides were good, but not knock your socks off. Overall was still good!
Slaps was the best KC BBQ experience I've had so far. We stopped and scouted the massive menu. We placed our order and I got the last dish of burnt ends for the day. I'm a glad we weren't a minute later! We grabbed a table outside and grabbed some sauces from the dispensers. The ribs were so full of smoky flavor and the meat was falling off the bone. The burnt ends were bites of happiness! I would gladly come back here! Great service, killer bbq!!!
When you are caving BBQ on a Sunday the only place to go is Slaps. Well any day is a good time for them really but I'm normally not in the KC area as many ch as I'd like so got to grab it when I can. Folks here are awesome and do everything they can to make sure you are happy. Slaps is what BBQ is about no fancy building just a good ol place to throw the grub bag on and dive in. Have your napkins ready Today was pulled pork, jalapeño sausage with their great beans and some tator salad. I won't be eating a late meal for sure
We bought our out-of-town friends who wanted great Kansas City BBQ for lunch, and it was also my first time. I heard the line can get a little crazy, so we came about 20 minutes after opening on a Monday. We tried a little bit of everything and loved it all. My top three were the burnt ends, the ribs, and the potato side dish. It started getting a little busier as we left around lunchtime, so I suggest getting here early if you are on a time crunch. You'll find silverware, napkins, and all the necessary sauces outside. It's really a no-frills place located in an old, historic-looking building. I would definitely add this to my top three of the best Kansas City barbecue joints.
If you want a shitton of meat, this is the place to go. This was the first place I went to get some KC BBQ and I definitely got my stomach's worth of the stuff. I ordered the Cattleman's plate and ended up with a lot of leftovers of food. The sausage and brisket itself were excellent: well cooked and the bbq sauce options were excellent. The spicy sauce isn't super spicy - it's more mild in spice but still delicious and complemented the meats very well. The coleslaw was more meh and the mac and cheese solid but not super memorable. If I had to go back, I probably would skip the sides. In classic bbq joint fashion, it is seat yourself and you go up to get your own napkins and sauce at a table. There's both indoor and outdoor seating (including on the second level) so it's great when it's nice out. We got there at around lunchtime on a weekend. We did find a parking spot in a lot just past the restaurant, but parking was pretty competitive. The line itself was also pretty long - though it moved fairly quickly. Once you get inside, you can also order a beer while you're waiting - and the cider was delicious.
*CELIAC, GLUTEN FREE REVIEW smaller, authentic BBQ places like this aren't always known for being the most celiac friendly, but the staff here were so kind and helpful with explaining what was and wasn't gluten free, and changed gloves for me while getting my order. I got the burnt ends combo with turkey, all meats are GF and so are the sauces! I got the potato casserole and coleslaw as sides, so yummy and I did not get sick. read more

Pretty good barbecue, but KC's best. Slap's is listed up there amongst the KCBBQ locales. It was on my way to Fort Leavenworth, and I'd never been, so I tried it out. When I first drove by there was already a line forming outside the front entrance, which was promising. I parked close by, but there was both lot parking to the rear of and across the street of the restaurant. I got in line and looked up what their specialty was. As the line moves you into the building, the staff at the bar will ask if you want to drink while you wait - why not? I tried this Giggle Pig, a German-style wheat bier served exclusively at Slap's. They had a lot of BBQ to try, I decided to try their Burnt Ends Combo plate, which comes with burnt ends, another meat, and two sides. I went with the burnt ends, brisket, mac, and slaw. The burnt ends were tender on the inside, flavored well. The brisket was very thinly sliced and lean. I am not a fan of this cut of brisket, but I did enjoy the taste. The sides were fine. I wouldn't rave much about the sauces. The sweet is molasses based and the spicy is runny, and tomato based. The sauces were meh and buried the already good tasting bbq. Next time, I would try a sandwich or get some ribs. You can even get just "one rib" for $3.50. The Cattleman looked good it has sausage, brisket and burnt ends. 5 stars for Slap's BBQ. This is one of those BBQ places in Kansas City that is a MUST VISIT. I had "The Sandwich" - brisket version and it comes with onion rings, bbq sauce and a cheese sauce similar to a queso and a side order of fries. Absolutely delicious and super filling. I'd totally recommend if you want a great BBQ meal and to be filled up all day. As an FYI- if you come during prime hours be prepared to wait in a long line and limited parking in their lot so you may have to park on the street. read more

After several failed attempts at finding anything good in the top recommendations I dig a little deeper and found this place. Slap's is what I came to KC hoping to find. Only place I've been to here where the sauce didn't taste overwhelmingly (or at all, here) like pickles, but the meat's so good you can eat it bare. Be prepared for a wait, though. There was a line out to the street at opening bell (not a literal bell, don't get your hopes up there), so I can only imagine what the dinner rush is like. The ketchup ain't Heinz, though, but the Code 57 violation only really affects the side dishes, because you're literally demented if you ruin the brisket with it, so I have to let that one slide (the meat was more than enough to fill up on anyhow). read more

Delicious and so much to choose from! I love that they have different combo meals and plates you can decide upon. I shared the burnt end combo and you got one other choice of meat (we chose brisket!) and two sides (cheesy corn was so cheesy!) I would say the sandwich combos are decent sized too!! Had plenty of leftovers for lunch the next day for cheap! They had two outside area! One covered up too and one fully covered outside patio. Which I loved for the nice day it was. The smell of the bbq cooking was the best haha! The employees there were so nice and helpful, it started to get busy when we got there and they were so patient with us since we had never been in before. * THE SLAP I WILL BE ALWAYS READY TO TAKE... SLAPPS BBQ!!!* :D I wrote the previous review 2 years back, and fast forward to today, absolutely nothing has changed. The quality of the meat and taste of the food are great offering a burst of amazing flavors with every bite. The restaurant is always crowded with a no-holding-table area. As you enter the main area of the restaurant to order, you have the drinks section on the left where you can collect your beer/soda and continue standing until you get to the meat counter. My journey to the meat counter is always a funny little adventure because I want to buy everything!! During today's visit, I got the cattleman's and three little pig plates, and some chicken. The sides i got were fries, onion rings, cheesy corn, and potato casserole. Each type of meat you get with the plates is cooked to perfection - the brisket, burnt ends, and sausage (cattleman's) and pulled pork, ribs, and jalapeño cheddar sausage (three little pigs). My favorite type of meat is definitely the ribs, which fall off the bone as soon as you take a bite. Sausages are rich, juicy and full of flavor and the satisfaction follows with every bite. Onion rings and French fries were well seasoned and fried to perfection. Potato casserole and the cheese corn were really creamy and savory. To sum it up, each bite I took made me plan my next visit to this BBQ heaven! Slaps just bumped to the top of the must visit BBQ places, overtaking Joe's Kansas City BBQ! read more

Very good BBQ, it's been a while since I had KC BBQ. We began at Joes but the long line wasn't what we were expecting. Slaps had a line as well and we were ready to eat. It was good, not life changing. Up charge for the brisket combo. The Mac and cheese was good but the BBQ chicken hit the spot. Juicy, plentiful and tasty. I was so excited to get some "Kansas" bbq. After eating here I'm appalled 1500 people have thought this was acceptable bbq. Meats are PRE CUT and in a WET WARMER. No matter when you come there will most likely be a line. I came to the SLAPS on a Thursday around 30min after they had opened and there was a line all ready. Which I was not surprised about the line. The line moved at a decent pace probably because the menu was one the wall while in line and customers were able to think if unfamiliar with the menu. The employee that took my order was quite quick and cheerful, which made the exchange very smooth. If you come in a group they make it not complicated with theirflow of transaction to dish out feed with very little weight and made transaction. Apparently, customers order everything since they had it premade in a warmer and you could tell it was made fresh based on the lack of dryness in the meat and sides. I knew their portions are not small so I shared with my wife. We ordered together the Cattleman's Plate with a side of warm potato salad and coleslaw which had hit the spot with deliciousness. I won't lie as a born and raised Kansas Citian that our style of bbq is smothered in sauce to hide the texture of meat. However, at Slaps the meat quality is top bbq competition with tenderness and flavor. I believe it helps with the flow of the line and wait that the bbq sauce, ketchup, silverware, and napkins are found in the outdoor seating area. There's no indoor seating so my group and I took over a large bench. The seating area generally busy so expect sharing your table or potentially waiting for an open area to sit. read more

When in Rome! When in KC go for barbecue! Went to slaps BBQ strictly on yelp reviews. Quite a disappointment I judge all barbecue places by their ribs and their coleslaw. The ribs, super tender, but that's where it ends. Zero flavor and pretty mediocre sauces. It makes me wonder if they're boiled and then smoked? No smoke flavor, no seasoning. As for the coleslaw, it might as well have been KFC. Drowning in liquid picking up my order was easy, but the person handing out the order was fine. It's a large place tons of people I guess go with a group but since it's Kansas City, I would know there are many many other choices for barbecue. When I'm back in Kansas City, this will not be a stop for me. read more

First time at Slap's and really really good KC BBQ, I have been to several of the major names in town and this gives all of them a run for their money. I think due to the volume and popularity of others, they can't possibly watch the meat as closely- and sometimes I have felt others are over-cooked. Slap's meat was tender, juicy, melt in your mouth good. Live at first bite. Line wasn't an hour long and they move people through fast, they also don't act like you should thank them for letting you be there like some in town- comfortable dining area "picnic style" all the sides were great and the sauces are two choices and both fantastic! I went to Slap's BBQ twice in one week--once for a bachelor party and once for Opening Day with my wife. The owner really knows how to make great BBQ. If you're looking for something different from the usual chain spots like Gates or Arthur Bryant's, this place is it. To me, this is what Kansas City BBQ is all about. The first time, I had burnt ends and brisket with cheesy corn and twice-baked potato casserole. The second time, we got ribs, jalapeño sausage, and burnt ends with baked beans and more of that amazing casserole. If you're going for the perfect order, I'd say get a little sausage, some burnt ends, and a few ribs with beans and the casserole on the side. Even if there's a line, don't stress--you'll be eating in about 20 minutes. And at around $15 per person, it's a solid deal. read more

The Hype is WELL deserved!! I came here over a weekend trip and I was not disappointed. This is probably top 3 if not the best KC BBQ Joint. Both the Service and the Food were ok point. Here are my ratings for everything I ordered: Burnt Ends: 7.3/10 Solid with the BBQ sauce but just ok without, texture was on point. ---------------------------- Brisket: 7/10 A little dry but great flavor ------------------------------ Ribs: 9.3/10 BEST Ribs I have ever had to date. They didn't need bbq sauce, melts in your mouth. ------------------------------- Chicken: 8.4/10 Another one of my favorites! ------------------------------ Sides were on point as well with the stars being the baked beans and the Mac and Cheese. With so much BBQ in Kansas City, I can be overly critical at times because there are so many options when one is not as great as another. Slap's has quickly made a name for itself as a newer addition to the discussions about great BBQ in Kansas City. For me personally though, I may have ordered items that aren't there best. The cheesy corn is good, but it wasn't something where I'm clamoring for another serving. I also got the Southern Comfort pulled pork sandwich, which I didn't love on the first bite. However, with each additional bite, I found myself enjoying it more and more. It had a slow build of flavor that showed me that Slap's is making a name around the city for a reason, but I think I'd try something else on my next visit. In town visiting for work. Asked a round and was advised to go to this and one other place. This one was close to my work so I swung by here for lunch one day. Service is Counter style and at lunch on a Wednesday it was probably about 20 people deep. Only took about 15 minutes to get to the line so really not that long of a wait. Food was instant as the counter provides you your food right before you check out. As I was new to the area, I wanted to try a little bit of everything so I opted for a two meat plate and added a third side of jalapeño smoked sausage at the end. My other two meats were the ribs and the burnt ends Wow!! These burnt ends are probably some of the best I've ever had. Dip them in a little bit of their sweet and or spicy sauces and the flavors really are on fire! They ribs are fall off the bone tasty and have a nice dry rub that can be complemented with their sauces. The jalapeño sausage, I thought could've had a little more cheese and jalapeño in it as it mostly was sausage, but still were tasty! The sides were both delicious as well with the baked beans again, being some of the best I've ever had! The mac & cheese was on point as well as it had real chunks of bacon in it mmmmmmmmmm Bacon! A relatively large seating area outside replete with picnic tables, and a couple other tables is where you can dine if you choose to stay.If you only have the chance to try even just a few types of barbecue to try in KC, this should definitely one of them! read more

This is a cool place across the river from KCMO. The service was friendly and fast. The pulled pork juicy with a light smokey flavor, the ribs were really good. The brisket was thin sliced and moist not over cooked. It was not the most flavorful brisket but it was good. Eat here with confidence read more

My first visit to Slap's and it didn't disappoint. Went with the Burnt End Plate with Cheesy Corn and Fries. Burnt ends were really good. Good flavor and cooked perfectly. Cheesy corn is as advertised, CHEESY! My favorite had to be the sauce, particularly the spicy. It was packed on a Saturday, so we ended up dining at a large picnic table with a nice family. Nice to meet people through a meal! The folks behind the counter were helpful and friendly. Nice job by them! read more

Hands down the best BBQ ive ever had. The burnt ends were unreal and the hot ootato salad was too. Mac n cheese us run of the mill so id skip that next time. The ribs were amazing and so juicy/tender. The brisket was unacceptable imo, dark grey and super unappetizing looking. It just wasnt good and id definitely avoid. The burnt ends are incredible though. I liked the ordering process too. Simple and school cafe style line. I cant wait to revisit. I love the self serve sauce bar too. Wow. Their BBQ was fire!! I ordered the baby back ribs, and the meat just fell right off the bones. They were juicy and tender, exactly how good bbq should be. I used the regular bbq sauce, which was a delightful flavor added. The baked beans was also amazing and you can tell there was bits of meat in there. I also ordered the cheesy corn; I've never had cheesy corn before, but it wasn't too bad. Probably not my favorite. I did try some cole slaw and enjoyed that. I also tried my family's burnt ends and brisket. The brisket was a little on the dryer side, but still tasted well with the bbq sauce. It was my first southern bbq experience and the food definitely met the expectations we had for KC BBQ. read more

I honestly usually never crave BBQ food... Yes, yes, I know! SORRY! I don't know why! Maybe cause NYC just did me wrong and always comes out as a dissapointment. I'm glad Kansas City turned me around. If only you saw my face expressions with shocked, surprised and awe'd of how amazing that sampler platter I've ordered. Portion was perfect. Not overally stuffed where i'm about to explode but just enough where i can roll into bed and knock out. Just putting diff. slabs of meat on bread and tossing some sides on top making my own concoctions got me Wowwed at how the flavors were. Smokey, Tangy, a bit of sweet, and a hint of kick in ALL of em! Also love how they gave me extra sauce to dip, drizzle, take shots with! YES, that's how good it was. I'm not even gonna lie. I had 2 extra sauce cups and I ended up dipping that with my meal the next day! Overall. Thank you for slapping my senses. The ribs were legitimately fall off the bone tender, but the seasoning on them were sub par. Additionally they came without sauce on the ribs themselves which I found to be unusual for KC. The sausage lacked flavor and the brisket was tender, but not moist. The pulled pork was my favorite and paired well with the Slaps sauce which was incredibly sweet. The sides were okay in general, but the beans were killer. I found the atmosphere and the staff to actually be my favorite part of the whole experience. They were warm and friendly. Given the long line and waiting outside for disappointing food, I probably would choose a different spot for BBQ. read more

I read about Slap's while Googling for Kansas City's best BBQ, and it came up in the top ten. It's an unassuming little building in a quaint neighborhood. There are both sheltered and outdoor dining areas, including a little rooftop patio. The staff was super friendly, and you can get a soft drink or a good brew with your 'cue if that's your thing. (It's mine!) I ordered the Cattlemen's Plate and added 3 bones, so I could get the max sampling options for meats. I chose Mac n Cheese and Potato Casserole for the sides. The plate also came with 4 slices of white bread, pickle slices and pickled jalapeño slices. All in all the food was great! The brisket was not my favorite because it was very thinly sliced (doubles for sandwiches, so I get it), and I like mine more of a pencil width thick and sliced to order. The pulled pork was terrific! It was moist and flavorful. The ribs were fall off the bone tender and very tasty. The turkey was some of the best I've had. Smoky, thin-sliced and moist, very good. The show stealer for me was the beef polish sausage... WOW! It was smoky, spicy, and absolutely delicious! The sides were great. Mac n Cheese was creamy and had chopped bacon in it, and the potato casserole was chunky, and creamy with a little bite. I highly recommend Slap's for fans of good KC BBQ! read more

Not our first time at Slap's but my first time to leave a review. We had out of state guests in town that wanted to try a new BBQ joint. They'd previously eaten at Q39, Jack Stack's, and Joes. DELICIOSOOOOO! I came here around lunch time on a Monday - it wasn't dead but wasn't totally busy. There was a few people in line and I waited around 5-8 minutes in line before ordering. The actual shop itself is quite small but there's tons of seating that's covered right next to the shop, outside on their little rooftop deck, and then right in front of the restaurant. Everything was taken except the tables out in front so that's where we sat! This BBQ place is well known and very highly rated, so it's usually a poppin' place at any time or day. The employees were nice and efficient with getting your meal. I got the burnt ends & brisket combo with bacon mac and cheese, coleslaw, white bread, and pickles & jalapeños. I ate it all clean except the white bread! It was so delicious. The coleslaw was creamy and cut finely which I love. The mac and cheese was flavorful and gooey. The burnt ends were to dieeeee for, easily my favorite thing on my plate. The brisket was tasty it was just thin, but I apparently that's how the brisket is served in KC. It was still very delicious! It was so good I wanted more of it. The potato casserole was phenomenal and think I'd get that as one of my sides if I ever come again when I'm in Kansas City.
