I was looking for a place to hold a 27th Birthday party. My friends and I heard of Slate. We figured it would be good because it offers a club/bar feel as well as a sports bar, so everyone would be happy. We also loved the fact that each floor and room offered different music. Not the case. We reserved a table a week ahead of time. When we got there they let us in immediately, which was nice, and sat us at a table. We asked our waitress and the manager if the music was going to be techno all night and she said no. We then ordered two bottles, which is mandatory, at a total of $800 and began to wait for the music to change. The dj then told us he was playing for a private event and would play techno all night. We were pissed cause we were not informed, so they moved us downstairs to the gaming room. We looked stupid being down there all dressed up, but we gave it a chance. We then ordered $100 worth of crappy appetizers. The dj here played late 90's hiphop. We figured we should just enjoy ourselves since we paid $900 so far!! Then the dj told us he was moving upstairs. We got excited and moved our table upstairs. It is now 2:00 am. He then starts playing techno r&b covers from the early 90's. By this point there was NOONE in the club or downstairs. It was a horrible experience and a waste of money. When we first arrived there was a large crowd, the dj was horrible and it forced people to leave. The truth about Slate. I went this past Friday Aug 5, for my birthday celebration. This club is off the chain with great music, cheap drinks for Manhattan pricing and I had a great time and the played something for everyone. Here's the thing is you want to just party and not talk this is the place to be because with all the speakers in that place the you hear nothing but the music its so loud which is awesome. The main floor upstairs is for the dancing which can get crowed like cheek to cheek moments with all the people but its still a fun time. For anyone who orders VIP don't get mad if some people starts to hump on your table. There were moments in there I felt like the tables were beds for some who were basically going crazy. This place is definitely not for the inexperience clubber. You will see some things in there that if your not used to it can throw you off like for example we saw one couple were the girl gets on the table spread egal and a guy starts to eat her out and humps her till it looked like she cam which is cool then you have the two lesbians giving everyone a show which I enjoyed because you didn't realize who was going to blow first. Which I was like damn. If you don't want to go through all this you have the option of the down stairs where they have the best lounge now it is funny to go from a crowded and raunchy area to a clam area as their lounge which has the most comfortable chairs to relax. Still loud music but not as upstairs. The lounge also have pool tables, ping pong, and Foosball table plus a nice size bar down there so its not bad. read more

Will not be returning! when i ordered a beer downstairs the waitress told me the beer i wanted was an upstairs beer, and she couldn't be running up and down stairs because they were going to be busy later...OK, I don't know what that has to do with now...but sure. THEN, when I got my check it was for the correct amount, but the waitress transposed the numbers when running my card through, and charged me more than I should have been...I told her immediately, and she ran my card for the correct amount saying I wouldn't be charged for both...I was. I called Slate and told them, and after 3 weeks of calls and constant emails to the manager they still haven't refunded my money. I would NOT recommend going, any other place with some bowling, or pool and anything would be better! read more

Poorly and rudely managed. I planned a surprise birthday party for my girlfriend here. I used a promoter to make the arrangements, etc. First I was told I could have a 2-hr open bar for $35 per person. Two days before the party, that was taken back, and they told me I could get a reserved area with a comped bottle, as apologies for the mistake. I agreed to it. Upon showing up, the woman outside (rude and unaccommodating) said that was not possible. In order to have a reserved area we would have to buy a minimum 2-bottle service which would have cost us $300 something. We refused and she offered the same but minimum 1 bottle. Still not acceptable. We all just went in as normal guests and hung out by the bar. I eventually met the manager and explained what had happened. As soon as I began speaking he started staring at his phone and texting. It was extremely rude and he showed no concern. He would not do anything to help us out, so we left shortly after. Long story short, the management was poor at communication and accommodation. Will never go back. read more

Hosted a bar mitzvah party for our son there and everything was absolutely perfect. Sam (events guy) and Heather (maitre de') delivered everything that was expected and the whole event went through without a single hitch. They were very easy to work with and made the perfect recommendations regarding floor plan, event sequence and food. The serving staff was professional, polite and efficient. Everybody thought the food was delicious, too. We went with the house DJ (Spin Diesel) and he was awesome. The kids danced for 3 hours straight as the DJ, MC and entertainers kept everybody engaged. Overall i can highly recommend the venue for private parties for 100 - 250 people. read more

been to slate a couple of times.Reading a couple of the reviews below me makes me wonder if i'm commenting on the right place lol. This place was great for me. First of all, there is no cover charge which is pretty rare for the city. a lot of places charge you 20 bucks just to get in and if you get kicked out, tough. to the people complaining about expensive drinks, maybe you should go to a bar in queens or something. this is manhattan, drink prices are ridiculous. That's just the way it is. What I liked is that their dress code is not as bougie as all the other clubs in NYC. I've been turned away because my jeans were too baggy, for wearing sneakers, boots, sports jerseys etc. etc. etc. this place is pretty cool about the dress code. just don't wear any gang stuff(hats, durags, bandanas etc. etc. and u good). a lot of people wrote about bad experiences with the bouncers. I think they are just fine. I went once about a year or 2 ago and there was this large group(asian dude, 2 white guys, and 6 girls) and they were disgustingly drunk. I went in with my ex at the time, my best friend, and another guy and we were having fun on the dance floor and this large group was just drunk as hell the whole night and kept stepping our shoes, bumping into us, pushing us "unintentionally" and all that crap. Than at one point, they all got into a circle huddle during a dance and pushed up against my group and the asian dude started jumping up and down on my shoes. I had enough and i just gave the whole circle a strong push and all 9 people flew 3 feet across the dance floor and tripped over a chair. The guys got up and came towards us and punches were thrown until the bouncers broke it up. My group explained the situation to the bouncers and they took our side and promptly kicked the other group out even though i guess technically, i did "start" the fight lol my only gripe is that the music is a little blah to me. They play some homo stuff sometimes like britney spears-dance until the world ends followed by a bunch of house/techno crap. WAITRESS OVERCHARGING: FYI--On Thurs 21Feb I joined a large event at Slate. A waitress asked if I wanted to order. I asked for the apprx cost of a glass of sauvignon blanc, and she said appx $7 or $8. upon delivering the glass of wine, she asked for $13--which "includes the tip". when questioned on the cost of the wine vs her original $7 or $8, she showed a receipt for $10. adding taxes of $0.88, this means she added a tip of $2.11--or 21.1% pretax for herself--OUTRAGEOUS. no "automatic tip" was told to me upfront. also, the wine was not good... * i didn't push on the 'auto-tip' because I was a guest at the event and didn't want to cause a scene. suffice to say, i didn't order any futher drinks from the waitstaff, and went to the bar.. too many other places in NYC, no need to go to Slate read more

ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE Bottom line - this place only cares about your money, not their customers experience. I organized a party here for a special occasion, worked with their events coordinator, pre-ordered a cake, etc., AND paid a premium for it. Not only did our waitress bring the wrong cake order... she didn't even know we had one because our event coordinator didn't submit the paperwork! Our waitress disappeared at times, she took over 30 min. to run our cards at the end of the night when no one was left in the bar, and managed to overcharge me. The on-site manager did not seem to care or compensate us in anyway for the things that went wrong. She explained that management would look into compensating me in some other way in the future. After my party, I contacted the venue and the event coordinator was not notified of the issues we had or compensating me in anyway. It has now been about 2 weeks since my event and no response from the General Manager or events team. TERRIBLE customer service. They only care about the money they make when charging a minimum + service fees and nothing else. If you are going to charge clients a premium, they expect an exceptional experience in return. The bartenders here are thieves!! the bartender here stole my wallet and phone, my friends saw it happen. and the manager, and everyone else, were probably on it with her, because their response was pathetic to say the least. I have never seen or heard of anything like that happening at a bar, and needless to say along with filing a police complaint, I am never coming back here. If you are wise, either do not go here, or guard your wallet and phone with dear life and do not even put it down for one second just to grab your drink. The management, server, and bartenders here are terrible. and I do plan on doing more than writing a Yelp review. We just spent New Years Eve and Slate and honestly, I wasn't impressed at all. The space was huge, but because of that I wasn't able to find my friends for the majority of the night. If you went to the bar or the bathroom you would have to spend another 20 minutes looking for them. There was also a mandatory $5 coat check, and they gave away my friend's coat. When she went back three times the following week, she was treated TERRIBLY by the staff (Manager Kile Moffett specifically). First of all she was told the best way to contact him was via TEXT and he proceeded to give her an incorrect email. He never followed up, and when she visited the restaurant for a third time was promised that a new coat would be delivered to her by the end of the week. TERRIBLE experience here for New Year's Eve 2014. Mandatory $5 coat check lost my coat, despite having my ticket at the end of the night. I was forced to leave the bar at 3am in 15 degree weather without a coat. I was asked to come back the next day only to find they were closed... Convenient! I met with the manager, Kile, on 2 separate occasions to work something out. This man calls himself a "manager" but he was arguably the most unprofessional person I've ever had a conversation with in my life. He finally agreed to buy the missing coat for me which later proved just to be a lie in order to avoid the situation any further. I refused to go back a 3rd time to deal with this "manager" so I contacted the owner directly instead. Regardless, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND AVOIDING THIS BAR. Way over their 1200 person capacity at NYE. AVOID!!! I should have listened to all the negative reviews instead I had hoped for the positive. How wrong. I made a reservation for a birthday party for 20ppl last night almost two weeks ago. We showed up at 10:30 and the security guy said they had no reservations and they were going to close early because the bartender was pissed it was dead all evening. He felt bad but it also seemed like this was something he was used to saying. This place is very unprofessional and I can hope this helps anyone else who doesn't want to stand outside with their party trying on a whim to figure out where to go with 20 ppl. Went last Sunday for their Sunday Funday event, amazing time. If you want a good game watching party, Slate didn't disappoint. Pool, foosball tables, ping pong, beer pong, huge TVs screening all the games and a great crowd. Drinks galore and my Cowboys won!! Will def be back next Sunday, they do it weekly now. read more

Love this place! They have great music, awesome atmosphere with a little bit of everything for everyone to be entrained from the dance floor, pool tables, ping pong tables to their big couches for everybody to sit and relax or/and eat, plus Their " steak piled high nachos" are just the best! Went here for Halloween this year and it was great. They had an open bar type deal and never waited more than a few minutes for a drink. Drinks were normal to strong. (When you tip them they actually help you out back) I only went to the downstairs part and it was nice. They have about 5, clean personal stalls for girls on that floor, the line wasn't long. What I loved most was there was so much space you were never crowded, or hot and could actually talk to the people you came with. Everyone seemed under 30 so it was young but not rowdy or underage. I'm giving this 1 star because of the bouncers inside. Outside of that, Pros: the music was great + a big size for clubby bar in NYC. Cons: Power-tripping bouncer (not the ones checking ID outside) + waited in line for 25 min when the venue was not even close to full. REASON FOR THE 1 STAR: I went to Slate last night with a group of 6 women and 2 men. Within the first 20 minutes, we were dancing on a nearly empty dance floor. One of our guy friends bumped into one of our girl friends, spilling a small part of her drink. He grabbed a couple of napkins and was helping her, and all of a sudden, 3 bouncers come up to him with one very much in his face. They were accusing him of throwing a napkin, and when he calmly told them that that was not the case, they continued to become more aggravated. I could not hear much more of the rest of the conversation because they stepped away from us, but this exchange lasted at least 10 min. No exaggeration. I've never seen an encounter with a bouncer in a club this long, in what was a circular argument as best. They ultimately kicked him out (and our other friend went with him), which shocked the 6 of us because we had seen the whole thing and he had done literally nothing wrong. I often give bouncers the benefit of the doubt since they have to deal with a lot of drunk assholes, but there is no doubt to offer these ones. I genuinely believe that the bouncer just saw our friend and assumed he was drunk because of the bump, which is also ridiculous because I have seen ACTUAL drunk people allowed to stay. Again, he was definitely not drunk and the bouncers (especially the main one that talked to him) was really just getting off on a flexing his power, offering a ridiculous accusation, then purposely baiting him to argue, drawing this whole thing out, and finally kicking him out. Service is shit...food is shit....they're games downstairs are shit.... all around the place sucks. The nachos were old Doritos... had to make a basically beg to get basic condiments like ketchup for my hockey puck hard as Rock sliders and sour cream for the cardboard tasting nachos. The change machine to give coins to play arcade games was broken. There was a lady who worked downstairs who just looked in space when I tried grabbing her attention over and over again to ask about the change machine. She never did bother responding so I went for manager who tried her best to fix it but to no avail, however, she did give us enough arcade coins to play 5min game of skeeball. We were downstairs originally but since we couldn't get more coins for games, we headed upstairs which was fully empty. We asked one of the worker guys standing by the tables if we could go sit at a table without bottle service, he said "sure. Just pick a table". We sit down, then waitress comes with stank attitude telling us to order a bottle or leave. I alone spent $250 downstairs on drinks and food... was treated like shit, so were my friends. Left really pissed off. Never going back there. Don't recommend anyone to go there. Go to bounce across the street but slate should be closed for the horrible service read more

I was visiting a friend in the city last saturday. She wanted to take me to slate to show me how different it was. I havent been there since i move last year. I used to go all the time. It looked amazing there is so much to do there we player pool and then switched to ping pong for the rest of our time. The lounge on the lower level is great we ate dinner and had some drinks. I had a kobe burger that was the best i've ever tasted. There was a private party in another section of the place. They had a buffet, game tables and a projection screen. That would be perfect for my next coporate meeting. read more

I wish I could give zero stars, or even negative stars. My friend was having a birthday party at slate. The party was preplanned, and she was assured that her guests would get to skip the line. That day, it snowed over three inches. One of the guests arrived wearing a nice outfit with timberland boots due to the weather. Not only did the bouncers renege on the here's promise that guests of the party could skip the line, but they would not let our friend wearing the boots inside (although all the females in the party were also wearing boots and were allowed in). Terrible experience and terrible service. If you are planning on having a birthday party, I strongly advise you to NOT book with slate. They do not deserve your business and will be useless at giving you a pleasant birthday experience. read more

The tables are atrocious: dirty, need to be brushed, level and space around them to play a decent game, lighting is awful...tons of shadows on the table. The few pool cues they have were warped!!!!! Oh they only had 1 bridge in the entire place....1! After giving up on waiting more than 15 minutes for a pool table brush, two workers actually came over with a vacuum cleaner.....wanted to interrupt my game to clean the table. YOU CAN'T BE SERIOUS! Oh yeah, the black electrical tape that is on their leather couches is sooooo ghetto, I can't take it. Oh and last but certainly not least, there was NO SOAP in the bathrooms!!!! NO SOAP! I was hesitant to believe that I would get the deal as discussed, but I had absolutely no problems when I arrived. Got the promised deal, a great table, and had an amazing birthday celebration. Birthdays and Bottles deserves 5 stars, but Slate itself gave some of my friends a hard time getting in even though I had a guest list. We celebrated both my sisters birthdays at Slate this last Saturday (3/15/2014) and it was an amazing time for all 30+ of us! We made our reservation via birthdays and bottles and everything went smoothly. We were able to get a 2 bottle , 1 free deal and a table upstairs which is what we requested! The only negative part (well not too much) was having to wait in line. We waited for about 10/15 mins which wasn't too bad but still, I would hope that since we made a reservation the wait time would be none. In any case, it was an all in all great time and good choice to celebrate anything. Upstairs is more of a dancing/club scene , while downstairs is more lounge-like. So you have your choice. I really liked this scene. Great to come through with a group and have a good time. The place was not overly crowded and everyone was well accommodated. Decor - The place was clean, smooth, chic whatever you want to call it. I really enjoyed the mix with the upstairs and downstairs sections. The hanging stairs and all. The pool tables and couches were placed well for playing and lounging. This is a nice sizable space that doesn't get stifling. Food - The food/drinks were good. Bartenders were attentive and quick. Music - the dj played the hits and you couldn't ask for much more. I liked the variety through the decades and different genres. read more

I had a great night!! perhaps it was the company or the balanced drinks... Pretty good vibe, no issues with security about dress code like some other visitors... I went last weekend for my friends birthday and it was a pretty good ethnic mix without sacrificing quality. They have great food, no problems with the tab- price was pretty expected... I've been here for a few other parties, always a good time... Just be prepared for the coat check girls, they ask for tips and work slow. This place is awful. My husband had a holiday party here (a group of surgeons). The party was slated (no pun intended) to end around 10PM and at exactly 10:00PM all guests were screamed at to exit the building and one bouncer said "what don't these people understand?! why won't they leave?!?" Unbelievable. We were herded outside in the rain like cattle (unlike several years in the past at different NYC locations). Bouncers continued to yell at guests and told them to leave, despite guests trying to retrieve their coats from coat check where the line was probably one of THE most disorganized disasters. My friend was located literally in a corner texting her husband when a red-haired wilding out bouncer approached her and demanded she leave because she was "blocking traffic." My friend told her that she was waiting for her husband and all hell broke lose with this crazy person. The bouncer proceeded to yell obscenities to her and recruit another bouncer (equally crazy) to try and escort my friend out into the rain. We tried to get the front door woman (very nice and accommodating and actually helpful) who attempted to get the head of security, but given the bar was very busy and could not find him. She was very sweet. The rest of the staff, completely inappropriate. I tried to intervene with my husband and was told that I was "ghetto" and "throwing [my] hands up." We are a group of physicians and were trying to find our jackets and significant others. This behavior is disrespectful and unacceptable. We will be considering legal action, with video and picture evidence. In the meantime, we will NOT be hosting any further events here nor will we further any clients of this establishment. NYE: Open bar not so open....rudest bartender I have met in my entire life The start of my new years eve was honestly great at slate. I paid $150 for a ticket to get open bar, food, etc. When we first arrived, the bar was easily accessible and so was the food! there was almost no wait and the bar tender nearest to the door was lovely. However, before it even struck midnight, I went over to the bartender, whom was one of three others, who was working the opposite end near the dance floor. On my way over, I was warned by a passerby not to go to him as "we will never get a drink". I foolishly did not listen because I didn't want to stray to far away from my friends. When I got to the bar, it was very crowded, and some people had wads of cash in hand. A girl in front of me announced that she had given him a $20 and he replied "you won't have to wait again". Now, I'm not saying you should not tip bar tenders, especially when they are working an awful night and they deserve tips but if I had paid this much for an open bar I would like to at least be served unbiasedly. I totally understand this girl not having to wait again after giving a generous tip to him but he was blatantly not serving people without cash in their hand at this point. I was finally at the front and after about 15 minutes of being there I brought to his attention that I hadn't been served yet. He scoffed and replied"Of course not, you don't have cash in your hand". I was appalled. I told him I had been waiting a really long time and he YELLED at me. I kid you not he meanly yelled at me claiming I had "walked away" meanwhile I'm shoved against the bar so tightly I could barely move a centimeter let alone walk away. When I contested with him that his statement was false, it escalated to screaming. "I'M NOT THE ONE THAT'S BEEN DRINKING AND I SAW YOU". LOL ok cool good for you. So thank you slate. I paid $150 to be yelled at and put on the verge of tears on new years eve! I will say the business manager was one of the sweetest people there and really went out of her way to try to do her best to fix the situation so thank you. At the end of it the best they could offer me was "a drink" which I should've been able to get on my own, for free, which is why i paid so much money for a ticket. I tried going to Slate with a group of 15 friends on a Sunday afternoon. We called ahead to make sure that we would be able to get in at 4pm, which is the time their website says they open. We called and confirmed the open time with the woman who answered the phone. However, when we showed up 15 minutes later at aproximately 4:15 the bouncer told us that they were closed until 6pm for a "child's birthday party". We left and I called back to find out what the misunderstanding was , the lady inside on the phone assured me that they were open. When I told her that the bouncer had just turned us away she put me on the hold and came back shortly after to tell me , "we are open, the bouncer just turned away some drunk people so maybe that was you". No one in the group had had a drink yet , slate turned away 15 sober ppl that wanted to spend money in their establishment, I will never go back and never recommend this place to anyone. read more

I used to love going to SLATE. Yesterday, I went for my friends birthday. Of course drinking was involved but I limit myself to get home safely. I took my friend to the restroom. The security lady wasn't paying attention because she was busy taking a photo for another couple. I went in with my friend to make sure she was okay. I understand this place takes cleanliness, safety, dress code seriously for everyone. BUT, THIS SECURITY LADY EXTORTED ME FOR TIP MONEY because she didn't know two of us were in there. She literally was like 'Well now I need tip money' I gave her a dollar to shut her up even though I had more cash on me. This place is ridiculous and who knows how much she was doing this to other customers under the influence. If this establishment is how you treat customers and get more money from. Then I definitely won't be coming back. BE CAREFUL OF THE SECURITY AND ANY OF THE WORKERS TO FORCE YOU TO TIP THEM WHEN THEY WEREN'T DOING THEIR JOB. read more
