We have been coming here for the last 10 years, and although I understand the struggles that Covid has created due to staffing, etc, I feel like their customer service has gone WAY down. First, we walked in, and waited for someone to NOTICE us for about 5 minutes. The bartender kept looking at us but not once actually acknowledged us. Then, we were seated finally, ordered drinks, and waited the entire time to receive napkins (we never did!) and our appetizer of calamari consisted of 7 pieces. When we got our check, the waiter argued with us about the clam chowder bread bowl price (which was posted outside on the sandwich board) and then when we left, they overcharged us by $2 each bowl. As my wife and I were leaving this place, a bus boy clearing a table turned to us, waved, and said "Thanks for coming by!" Which says a lot about the place, as this really isn't his job and he was busy with something else, and yet still gave us a friendly good-bye. And that summed up the service, very genuinely warm and friendly. As restaurants go, it is what it is: A somewhat upscale burger and fish-and-chips place in the touristy part of Monterey, just down the street from the aquarium. The food is an solid as the menu is unimaginative. And that works for me. For the location, the prices are reasonable. It was okay!! After a long day of driving and hanging out in the aquarium it was the only place on a Saturday that didn't have a huge wait. Original plan was bubba gumps. We ordered Calamari, Herb Garlic fries, Chowder bread bowl and a Caesar salad. The salad almost seemed like it was out of a premixed kit. The garlic fries were kinda oily and not crispy, they had so much garlic on them that it kinda burned my mouth. The calamari I thought was good! The staff were friendly and helpful and our food arrived quickly. Two pasta meals were ordered, and they looked like they were ladled into the plate together, as opposed to pasta layer then sauce layer. I felt adventurous and ordered their Halibut Fish and Chips. The taste of the halibut overpowered the fried batter, making it an unpleasant experience. I would not recommend that dish unless you are keenly fond of halibut. The best part of this review was the waiting to be seated. Once seated within 20 minutes of getting on the list, we sat near the back but unfortunately it is very loud in that corner. The wait staff was friendly and I ordered the chicken nachos and my wife ordered the BAAT sandwich. When she took a bite it was dripping in what appeared to be a heavily buttered bun and she had to send it back. Let me just start by saying that I work in the service industry. Specifically a server. Now , if a tip is automatically added , great. I have no problem with that. It ensures that the waiter is taken care of. What I am not ok with is, when your server knows their tip is guaranteed, the service SUCKS!!! And this is not ok. We went in as a party of 9. Tall Caucasian male appeared to be out server. We proceed to order drinks and also some appetizers. About 30 min in , this server looks so annoyed with us. And I know this look very well. But whatever right. .... We at there for a good time. So it comes time to pay. We split the checks according to couple. So he hands me the payment machine and it says 260.... And I'm like ok. Didn't seem like we had that much. But it is what it is. I always prefer to leave cash on the table. So I tipped accordingly. When he brought the check back it was only 180. But I also see that gratuity is included. Mind you , this greedy horrible server already pockets the cash and asks " well do u want some of the money back " At this point my night is ruined. Like WTF!!! Anyways, on top of all that he spilled a tray all over my friend , offered her a free shirt and never came back. We will not be going back there. EVER. We ate here on a Sunday, they had a 20 minute wait when other places were an hour and a half. This looks like it would be a good place to drink in the evening. But we were here in the early afternoon. As we were not very hungry we had bread bowl chowder with a side of calamari. This was not our 1st choice, they could not make the lobster rolls. There is very little chowder in the bread bowl, but they did offer a small bowl to refill with no extra charge. The tea was so weak you could see right through it. The calamari was good. Our waiter was a very young looking man, and he was not good. It took a long time to get anything, he even went outside to the patio with my wife's drink. I got the impression he was new, he will probably learn and be OK. I am not sure if we would go back, but I do not think so. Mot sure what all the crappy reviews are about, but we went here yesterday and everything was really good! Our server was friendly and attentive, cocktails were reasonably priced, food was tasty and portion sizes generous, and there was live music. We had the soft pretzels and fondue, the bacon burger, the fish and chips, and garlic fries. All were really yummy. The ambience was nice too with stained glass windows, all wood bar, and reasonably spaced apart tables. It's also right next to the water so you're greeted by a lovely view. The restroom is not located in the restaurant but in the adjacent shopping center. Hardly the end of the world. Go! read more

He only checked on us 3 times (to order, send the food back, and the check) which the second time we had to call him over to send the pasta back. I love live music but not late at night with a loud rock band, which is what Slys is known for so I never thought I would go here. But they have a 3 pm show on Saturday afternoons. I was curious to check it out. The place is bigger than it looks from the outside. I remember it being divey but it looks like they remodeled. They have lots of tv screens. It's fun to people watch and try to distinguish the locals from tourists. The menu is different from the website. Casual dining here. We had the Mac and cheese bites, which are filling! Clam chowder and shared a bacon cheese burger. Not too bad. It's the type of place that is more for the fun vibe than the food but the food does its job of curing hunger (burgers are huge). Best part is friendly service from a staff that doesn't mind if it's not their table and an owner/mngr who checks on customers. Our server even offered to split the bill and she brought it back with the price of the burger split in half between us! See, it can be done. Accessibility: welp, there's a tiered threshold but friendly, helpful staff to help you over it. This is a long/standing venue so I suspect older reviews no longer apply. I really wanted to like everything about this place, as I spend a lot of time in the area, often with friends. The location is excellent, on Steinbeck Plaza in the heart of Cannery Row. It's a spacious bar with several TV screens showing various sports programs, a nice bar, plenty of seating, and frequent live music. The wait staff was chill but attentive, so we were seated and our order was taken quickly and efficiently. Bar drinks were served, the live music started, and all was good. Well, all was good until the food arrived. We ordered a couple of orders of the Cannery Row Fish & Chips for the table, but I'm not sure I recognized what was placed before us. Now, I don't ever have high expectations of pub food and try to evaluate it in that context, but the chips (they were actually french fries, but that's not a problem) were limp and soggy, the fish batter looked and tasted like a greasy and overcooked egg-roll, and the fish, well, I'm still trying to figure out what that tasted like, but for sure not fish. The whole thing looked and tasted like microwaved week-old leftovers. We were all disappointed. It's a fun place, so I'm sure that I'll be back, but not before having had dinner elsewhere. read more

Asked for apple juice, she said no problem then brought orange juice because they were out. Didn't want orange juice - she offered cranberry which another server let us know was cranberry cocktail bc it was so sweet I didn't think it was actually cranberry juice- honestly tasted like HiC fruit punch. Wouldn't have offered that to my 2 year old. Service was horrible, slow. Tipped for common decency but the tip should've went to the live music guy, not any staff here. I should have checked yelp before coming here. The food is overpriced and service lacking! We ordered fish and chips, and asked for salad instead of the chips. They said it would be $2 extra, and it was a measly pile on the plate of fish. The fish also seemed frozen and not fresh. We asked how many chicken strips came in the kids meal, and got a snarky answer that we could only offer it if we fed it to a child... even though we brought a child with us. Where do I begin. Five stars isn't enough. If I could give five more stars I would. We were on our anniversary weekend and went to Monterey to celebrate. We had just left the infamous Monterey aquarium and wanted to relax with a nice drink. Sky McFly's was recommended to us by the cashier in the Harley Davidson store around the corner, so we took her advise and went. She said if we wanted a good stiff drink that's where it's at. I don't remember what I ordered or what my wife ordered but it was FANTASTIC! Skip forward four hours later we were back in town for dinner at Fish Hopper (that's another review coming). We got there early and decided to get another drink at Sly before going to eat. This is where the fun began. We met an nice young lady by the name of Leigh (found out later she was the manager). Once again the drinks were top notch, but the customer service was even better. Leigh went on break and we got Stan( whom is actually Daniel from what we were told). I couldn't tell the difference because he made our drinks the same as Leigh and was over the top courteous. We left for dinner and you guessed it went right back to Sly's to finish our night. Leigh was still there but getting off and introduced us to Lindsey. She told her to take care of us and it was our anniversary weekend. Wow! What a night. There's two things I'd like to leave you with. 1) if you're ever in Monterey, CA you've GOT TO go to Sly McFly's for GREAT cocktails, it's a MUST! 2) other bars need to send their bartenders over to Leigh, Dan & Lindsey to learn how to make drinks and the proper way to meet, greet & treat customers. read more

This was a "go to" place for us when we visit. Not anymore. The smoke and fire cocktail sounded ridiculous but curiosity got the better of me. Mezcal and Jack Daniels with jalapeños??? Was this a frat dare? Absolutely disgusting. The burger was stacked silly high but I would have appreciated that if it wasn't burnt. I was also informed that they were out of the eggs that was supposed to be on it. We also ordered the tacos which were soggy and immediately fell apart. The service was poor and the bill of $60+ for two disappointing entrees and a house wine with a stomach turning cocktail was enough for us to write Sly's off forever but then we saw the restroom! The issue was the fact that online the restaurant says "kid friendly" you'd assume there would be a changing table in the bathroom right? WRONG! I had to change my kid on the dirty floor.
