We were a party of 6 and had just came out from Bubba Gumps and decided to get a drink here at Sly Mcflys. I thought the name was cool and it was right across from where we parked. I thought to myself- (Ill take a near beer please ;)) The entrees came out fast and were priced well. The restaurant was almost empty during 2pm without it looking dead since there was soo much going on outside. I think that Sly's is a great place to get in & out when you're rushing to see the rest of Cannery Row. The best part is that it's right in the middle so you won't miss out on anything. Our bartender Dominique immediately greeted us as we sat down on the comfortable bar stools. She was great at suggestions and advice on what we should buy. We were a very indecisive party and she had no problem with it. So we decided on Jack Daniels red label. I never seen it before and she was right to say it tastes like Fireball. Bomb! Eh. It is family friendly, quick, and clean. The food isn't awful, but it isn't great. The fish and chips is okay. The fish is fresh and hand battered which is a plus but it lacks flavor. Frozen fries. Kids burger had zero seasoning. Chicken pesto sandwich is good but it's a LOT of bread. The chowder is good but borders on being too creamy/thick. It tastes like it had cream cheese in it or something. Onion rings are tasty they say they are hand dipped as well. Not bad. But not awesome. read more

I haven't tried the food here yet, but this is probably the liveliest places at night in Monterey that I've been to. I've gone once on a Friday night and just recently on Sunday night. There were fantastic bands both times with strong vocals and danceable up-beat music. The dance floor isn't large, but it is cozy. So first the draft beer was down. So I decided to order a tap Modelo and my wife got a random drink recommended from the bar tender. Didn't taste like it had alcohol. So order a next one margarita she ask if the last drink was ok I told her less sweet and needs to be more stronger. She brought me a margarita taste and was strong. But come to find out she charged me a extra shot to make it stronger lol she could of just told us it was gonna be extra to be stronger. Won't ever come back here. Seated right away and it was pretty busy during lunch. However that was the only thing that went quickly. Waiting for drinks took over 15 minutes and they were poorly crafted and we weren't able to drink them. Sent one back for something else which my friend also didn't drink. Ordered the appetizer sampler which was just deep fried frozen foods which weren't that great. Chicken strips were the saving grace of it. Chicken quesadilla wasn't that great. I only ate one of the four pieces. My friend said the clam chowder was great though! Waitress didn't even ask how the food or drinks were and as I asked for the check both were pretty much untouched. We walked around looking for something for dinner. We were tired and hungry. Chain places were packed and who wants that, when there are local businesses that deserve our money. So, we wandered in. It was a little too dark for my liking, but it is a bar, too, so I can't really complain. I ended up ordering a cup of clam chowder and a fried calamari appetizer. I will start with the calamari. Perfectly cooked. It is so easy to overcook calamari and make it chewy like rubber bands. These had finesse. There were also fried green beans and fried lemon slices. I had never seen that combo before, but thank goodness for it! The real start, for me, was the clam chowder. Had I known, I would have ordered a bowl. This was cooked with some love. Some clam chowder is just too thick. I've had chowder in New England and theirs tends to be thinner. This was more reminiscent of that style. The brininess was perfect and there was a powerful, but not overpowering, garlic note to it. It totally elevated it from most clam chowders. Just a cup of deliciousness. Waitress was ok. She wasn't quite as attentive as I had hoped for, but she was serving a large group next to us. Prices were reasonable, considering it is a touristy area. Stopped by this restaurant since the wait at Bubba Gumps was too long. The service was mediocre. The hostess had to "ask the server" if it was okay for us to be seated in his area. She may as well just asked if he was okay with making more money. Seemed odd for her to tell us that. The food was okay. Nothing too amazing. The lobster roll was mixed with some kind of celery slaw which took away from the taste of the lobster. My boyfriend said his chicken sandwich was kind of dry. The only things that were decent were the fries and the calamari. The server also didn't check on us once he dropped food off. I wouldn't recommend coming here unless you're just looking for a drink and small appetizer. read more

Went yesterday for lunch. 3 other tables that were seated after us ate and left before we got our food. The server was awful and only came to ask my partner if he wanted another beer an hour after he took our order. There was plenty of wait staff but we got completely ignored by our server. He was extremely rude and didn't bring the manager by when asked. Forgot to bring condiments and another server brought them. Over priced wings that still had feathers on them. When my partner got a beer, the sever got the size wrong and it was an additional $3 dollars for an already expensive beer. The portions were small and poorly put together. 10/10 would not go again. Horrible service ! Hate writing bad reviews but the owners need to know. Hopefully they care. We ended up trying this place because there was an available seat outside and we were in a rush. They took our orders fairly quickly but we waited 25 mins for our drinks (one coke) and another five more mins for the missing three cups of water. Waiter one kept coming by with food asking for "Paul" we told him twice we are not Paul. Finally after 35 mins we received two bowls of Clam Chowder and an order of Fish Tacos. We were still missing the Fish and Chips. The chowder was super salty (doesn't the cook ever taste before serving?). Unfortunately we had to eat what we can due to time (two members gave up and just chewed on the bread bowl. After another 10 mins the fish and chips came. It was dark and a bit burnt. No lemon, ketchup nor tartar. Just a greasy box with burnt fries and deep fried fish. Had to get up and track waiter two and asked about condiments and some lemon. He never brought it out. After 10 mins asked same waiter about the ketchup, lemon and tarter he said he will bring it right out. Never came. Approached him a third time when he came to collect the bill and looked at him directly asking a third time about the condiments. He confirmed and said he will bring it right out. Never saw him again. I like to support small restaurants and business but when they fail to provide decent service and food it's very unfortunate. It really wasn't that busy (and yes i use to work in the food and service industry so I know what is busy). First, this place has the best clam chowder in Monterey. That's a bold statement, I know, but it's true. It's stellar. Give it a shot if you visit. Second, the food was great. Absolutely no complaints on the food. My girlfriend and I visited this place for the first time this last weekend and we'll be making it a point to return. Third, Sean is the man. Our waiter, Sean, had incredible customer service. Really enjoyed our experience talking to him. He gave us some super excellent pointers on places to visit around town. Great customer service. Outside of Sean, the rest of the staff was quite friendly to us. My only problem with this place was that the day I visited their coffee machine wasn't working. First they say they have lobster rolls, and they don't that was after we ordered, then the waiter tells that the chef yelled at him for taking that order, then he tells us they are taking it off the menu. So we reorder and get the clam chowder in a sourdough bowl and I kid you not I bet the was maybe a cup of chowder in it for $15. They had barely cut any of the onside bowl out, however the chowder was good. The my husbands calamari poboy came with no sauce on it, waiter said chef forgot to put it on. Then I said I believe you owe a table of fries for the trouble, we did get the fries but not quickly. It was a mess. I won't go back, but if you wand good chowder just get a plain bowl not the sourdough bow. I felt sorry for the waiter, oh and we never got any salt that we asked for twice. We decided to eat at Sly McFlys cause we saw lobster Mac n cheese on the menu. We went in and seated ourselves... later we found out we were supposed to wait for someone. Nanette was our server, and was friendly, professional and helpful! I asked for her opinion for food and she asked thoughtful questions and made the perfect recommendation. I tried the BLAT sandwich and it was good, my fries were a bit greasy for my taste, my husband loved them. He had the lobster roll and wasn't that impressed. We were waiting at the side of the bar deciding what to drink. I went up to the side of the bar and waited there for a few minutes while the bartender was chatting away with another server. After a few minutes, the bartender went up to me, threw his arms up, and yelled at me that I was in the wrong area and I can't order from that spot in an extremely rude attitude. We rreally wish we could give this place 1/2 a star. Costumer service was really bad. It took out waitress 20 minutes to get us water, and 30 mins to get our regular drinks. We were in the establishment yesterday and ordered fish and chips and wings. Waited -30 minutes before the first dish came out. It was the fish and chips , and waitress communicated wings were on the way: well they were not, we never got them after waiting an additional 20 minutes while we were snacking on the fish and chips. The fish and chips were warm to cold and tasted terrible - the breading was raw in various places and fries limp. When asked about the wings , again told they are close to being ready - when I asked to cancel wings and pay my bill- waitress was condescending and sharp with her response and offered no apology for lack of service. I would not come back here and also would caution others (locals and tourists ) to understand lack of quality and service and be prepared for a bad experience that I had received. This past week I have had a bowl of clam chowder both here and at Bubba Gumps. It was far superior here, great flavour and piping hot, neither of which can be said for the other. Placed an order three separate times to get what we wanted. Pickles on the slider not on the menu is an allergy concern, as it is I hate them and it ruined the dish for me. Wings were drenched instead of tossed leading to puddles of sauce and some wings without. Two places settings for the four of us for the duration of dinner.
