S'MAC Nevers ceases to please when it comes to Mac and cheese ! This is the buffalo chicken major munch. This is what happens when you order with your eyes and not your stomach haha. They offer gluten free elbow pasta and gf breadcrumbs. $1.50 extra for the nosh size and $3 more for the major munch size. I understand that running a restaurant isn't cheap in this city, but not a huge fan of the ordering kiosks they have instead of humans. Came in on a Thursday night around 7 PM. When we got there the restaurant was fairly empty. To order you just have to go up to the front counter, place your order and get a number for the table. The server who got our order was very friendly and made the process go very smoothly. My friend and I ordered a Cajun (nosh sized) and alpine (major munch) to share. The food came out fairly quickly. And because the both of us weren't very hungry we had a lot to spare. Thankfully, they had a lot of to go boxes on the side for us to take all the food home. Both Mac and cheeses were good but not superbly amazing. The alpine's contrast between bacon and cheese was very good. Additionally, the Cajun was also good. I liked the flavor of the Cajun more than the alpine. The restaurant itself had a very rustic fast food vibe going on. It was front facing and open so it had a great ambience. All in all, a nice little restaurant. However, the food does feel kind of heavy (since it's just Mac and cheese) so would definitely be waiting a while if I were to come back. read more

My unofficial and probably very bias/unscientific research on this restaurant. I see that many deliveryman hangout in front of this establishment. Like a lot. At any time, it is at least 5 people with their bikes/scooter ready to go. I am concluding that people ordering from this place a lot. What is going on with our love for Mac & Cheese? It's such a comfort food. You incorporate pasta noodles with an insane amount of cheese and toppings. When I was here, I build my own and it tasted amazing. I got the mongo which is enough to share. I opted for the bread crumb because it provides texture/contrast from the pasta and cheese. I chose gruyere and swiss/pepper jack for a bit of spice. You want two different type of cheese that provides a bit of a contrast in flavor. More dimension of the food- the better it is going to taste. Then, I added chicken and bacon. Like what I was saying- chicken and bacon have a different contrast in protein. Taste so good. Some of their regular options look okay. Some looked better than others from a flavor profile stand point. I recommend building your own. Feel free to try what I ordered. Did you know there is a community frig? If you are in need, just take from the frig. A restaurant for the community. I'm down with that. read more

Spell the name S'MAC out, and you get Sarita's Macaroni & Cheese, so why you'd expect anything else is beyond me. If you're one of those people who need a little something healthy, there's also an option for a mixed salad, but I think that defeats the entire purpose of coming here. Just barely lunchtime on a Sunday, the place filled up quickly. Simple seating and sparsely decorated, you order at a kiosk while a few food runners wait behind the counter. There's a number of options regarding the variety of serving sizes and the types of mac & cheese. As with anything where you have choices, some are better than others. Having ordered the sampler skillet, there's 8 different types of the mac & cheese. Someone brings the skillets to your table, but you're expected to bus your table when done, with a couple of bins sitting center stage, right in the middle of the small restaurant space. All in all, the food was good, I liked the more unique selections, but I was expecting a little more in the overall dining experience. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but I felt like whatever that something is, it was missing. Having "sampled" now, next time I go back, I'll be committing to only one or two different types. read more

We got the mongo size cheeseburger Mac. It was very good, nice and cheesy, and the breadcrumbs on top were super crisp and gave it great additional texture. Unfortunately, there wasn't the satisfying cheese pull I was hoping for (maybe because of the cheese that was used). I also thought there could've been more ground beef in there. I was a little disappointed if I must say. We got the Parisienne mac and the buffalo chicken Mac with a side salad. Overall it was pretty affordable. The parissiene had Brie, figs and mushrooms in it but I had to add the chicken. For one, we got the small size and the other was the medium. Id say the small was enough. We didn't finish all of the buffalo chicken but it was too big. My main complaint is that it's really messy inside and not very organized. Popped into S'MAC on a snowy day as a lunch date with my new boyfriend, who would NOT stop raving about the Buffalo Mac and cheese! Turns out, it was absolutely delicious and we've been back twice since. I love that the restaurant offers a variety of portion sizes, instead of forcing a large amount (I'm not a big fan of having to carry leftovers through the city, but hate to waste), and the simplicity of the menu is wonderful for those who may get overwhelmed with too many options. The one thing I slightly disliked was the kiosk for self checkout. My boyfriend and I had quite a few questions and also wanted to pay in cash. The guy at the front hung back didn't really offer assistance until we finally got his attention. Overall a great place for hearty food, large groups, and families with children. Can someone really overdose from eating too much cheese and carbohydrates in one sitting? Holy lactose intolerance Batman! This place was one crazy experience to have after a long day of drinking and partying after a pub crawl. Thank God it is not anywhere near where I live or I would need my arteries cleaned on a weekly basis. There is actually a small dine-in restaurant and a take out shop next door. It was packed but all we had to do was hover like a senior at a casino looking to play their favorite slot machine and we snagged a few tables within a few minutes. Looked over the menu of cheese-tactic choices and had to get the cheeseburger mac and cheese. Since there were two of us we went with the mongo size. Boy was that a mistake! A giant portion served in a frying pan was put in front of us that struck fear into my stomach. Yes, it tasted good, but was so filling. Creamy cheddar and American cheese, seasoned ground beef, and a nice crispy top. Yummmmmy! We could not finish it all and had the rest bagged to go. There are 12 different mac and cheese options to choose from, and four different portion sizes offered. Nosh, major munch, mongo, and partay! They also offer a build your own if you want, a sampler pan, and gluten free macaroni. As the place was crowded the whole time we were there you could see how popular this bastion of gooey mac and cheese goodness is in this part of town. Especially dangerous when you have been on a pub crawl all day! Drunk and hungry is not a good way to be when you walk into this place! A long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, there was a skit on Saturday Night Live where Gilda Radner and Fred Willard played the owners of a mall shop that sold nothing but Scotch tape...it was called the Scotch Boutique, and they both wore plaid vests. All they sold were dispensers of Scotch tape. That's it. No paper. No scissors. Just Scotch tape. That's what S'mac is...a heavily orange one-stop joint for nothing but macaroni and cheese. Granted there are 14 kinds and even a build-it-yourself option, but it's all mac n' cheese. No burgers. No salad bar. Just mac n' cheese. That's the gimmick, and it seems to work for the mostly young patrons who must miss mom's home cooking. It's definitely the baked kind with a crusty top versus the Kraft variety with the milky, powdered cheese texture. Frankly, either does fine for me in a pinch depending on my level of desperation. I liked what I had, but it also made me want something else to balance the carb overload. From a service standpoint, they weren't that helpful in describing the different sizes - nosh ($6.75), major munch ($10.75), mongo ($17.50) - since I assumed a "major munch" was a medium serving when it was enough for at least two meals. I went with a "major munch" of the Cheeseburger, and out came a large skillet full of mac n' cheese with a potholder handle (see photo). Certainly hearty enough but really just Hamburger Helper...not a bad thing but I wasn't expecting to get all retro with my dish. Jamie W. ordered a "major munch" serving of the Alpine, which mixes gobs of Gruyere with chunks of slab bacon (see photo). Now that was good stuff. Bacon is a no-brainer, value-add in my book. Neither of us could finish our skillets, and we had the delusion of taking the leftovers back to the hotel room where we realized there was no fridge. Oh well, maybe I can find a store that just sells mini-fridges. No ovens. No washer/dryers. Just mini-fridges. FOOD - 3 stars...nothing but mac n' cheese, some better than others...don't even think about asking for a salad AMBIANCE - 2.5 stars...a fast-food set-up, not very homey SERVICE - 2.5 stars...a bit more enthusiasm and information would have helped TOTAL - 3 stars...certainly no false advertising here read more

Ooey Gooey Cheesy Goodness. We've walked by S'MAC many times and it's almost always packed. They have 2 shops side by side. One to dine in and one for carry out orders only. The dine in restaurant has seating but they are usually taken. We decided to order a La Mancha (Nosh Size) to go. Sizes include: Nosh, Major Munch, Mongo and Partay! Their Nosh size is the smallest and was filling enough for the both of us. The take out store is small. The cashier was friendly and quick to take our order. The La Mancha smelled so good. It was hot and bubbly. The elbow macaroni was cooked al dente. Loads of manchego cheese, sautéed fennel and onions. Sprinkle of parsley mixed in added some color to the dish. WOW. I loved the alpine Mac and cheese. Dishes are served in a personal-size cast iron pan, baked with bread crumbs. Slab bacon are hearty chunks of meat scattered throughout the pasta. I have yet to try the traditional macaroni and cheese here since all their other options of flavors just sound so delicious. I've tried their buffalo chicken and Mediterranean ones so far. The Mediterranean one was just OK to me but my BF, who loves Mediterranean food, loved it ... so I'd take his word for it. I loved the buffalo chicken one, and would get it again and again! They do have a "sampler" type option, but when my cousin got that one she didn't like much of the ones on it, since you can't choose which ones are on there, which sucks! If only they had a sampler option where you can choose which ones you actually WANT to sample ;) ... And of course there is gluten free pasta. I got the gluten free pasta with vegan sauce and seasoned ground beef. So rich and tasty and flavorful--glad I got the smallest size. For fans of mac and cheese, this is mecca! There are around a dozen variations on the menu. You order through an iPad kiosk and everything comes out in a cast iron skillet, which adds to the crisp. The wait is really long at times, but worth it. I had the Philly cheesesteak mac and cheese because, well, I'm originally from Philly. It was good but the onions were a little overpowering. My daughter had the Alpine, which is gruyere with slab bacon. I will say that her's was the real deal! Awesome. The Major Munch size arguably could feed two if you're not starving hungry. Comfort food at its finest. S'Mac really chose one dish and perfected it. I've gone through almost the full menu at this point, but my favorite still has to be the 4 Cheese with the Hamburger at a close second. With breadcrumbs of course. The major munch size is pretty much a full meal for one person. Also the mac and cheese is still really good if you reheat it in a microwave. Atmosphere inside is nice and cozy, and there's a pretty extensive outdoor area. Also if you order for delivery, they'll send you a printed out short story with your order which is a cute touch. My history with S'MAC goes way back. I remember visiting their smaller EV location when it was closer to 14th St. I'm happy to see they got a larger space in the EV but disappointed to hear the Murray Hill location closed. I thought the Murray Hill location was the nicest one with booths, etc. I guess times are tough when you're running a business. I always get the All American because I'm not adventurous. I've never had a problem with my food. The Nosh Portion (smallest size) is more than enough food. I do think the restaurant itself could be cleaner and better laid out. It's very disorganized with a dirty water jug in the front with free water, scuffed up walls, etc. I never remember the Murray Hill location looking roughed up but the original EV location was pretty rough around the edges too. I'm not sure how they treat employees though. I've never personally witnessed a negative situation, but years ago when I visited the Murray Hill shop, the woman ringing me up asked if I knew anyone who was hiring because she hated her job. Overall, I think this place is worth a visit if you love Mac n Cheese and it's some of the best Mac around. read more

I finally tried this place out. The place is small and pretty far east (12 st and 1st ave). I went here for an early dinner with a friend and there were some empty tables. We shared the "S'mac Sampler" special and we each got our own drink which ended up being $21 total. For the price, i wouldn't say this place is worth it because you can make mac and cheese at home for the fraction of the price. THe good thing about the sampler is that you can try various flavors. The flavors are: All-American, 4 Cheese, Cheeseburger, La Mancha, Cajun, Napoletana, Alpine, Parisienne. My favorite to least favorite were the: 1) Cajun 2) Cheeseburger 3) Napoletana 4) La Mancha 5) Alpine 6) 4 cheese 7) Parsienne 8) All-American The cajun had a nice kick to it and the sausage was a great complement to the mac. The beef in the cheeseburger added a depth of flavor. The napoletana was a mac version of pizza and it worked. La Mancha was flavorful with the crispy fresh onions and the fennel seeds that added a nice flavor to the mac. Alpine had the bacon but was bland aside from that. The 4 cheese was pretty plain but had more depth of cheesey flavor compared to the All-American. THe Parsienne had too much mushrooms and the figs tasted weird because it was too sweet for the dish. I def want to come back to try the buffalo chicken, but other than that i dont think i'd come back here again. It's overpriced food for "gourmet" mac n cheese. They do not even use fresh pasta, they use the dry elbows. I feel like i can make similar recipes at home for a cheaper price. It's good though, i'll give them that. Unfortunately, just this town so maybe stick around until I move away and need some cheesy goodness back in my Florida pantry. They had the take away versions but we just ended up reheating them in the oven. I really liked the Alpine as the cheese taste was subtle but flavorful in its own way - it really was the superstar.
