Stopped in about 8:30 on a Saturday and dining room was full so we grabbed a seat at the bar. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Everything on the menu looked good especially the boils since you see the tanks right in front of you. Ended up getting Connecticut lobster roll, lobster corn dogs, and lobster mac. Lunch with a dear friend. Our server Margaret W was top notch.. My lobster roll was delish and lived up to its reputation. The star for me though was the cup of chowda with common crackers. Hot, thick, creamy, but with a brightness not usually found. Lemon? My friend was wowed by the crab cakes Benedict. We split an apple tart with bourbon caramel for dessert. It was very good and could have used a crunchy note or some sea salt to bring up the interest a notch. Maybe replace the vanilla ice cream quenelle with cinnamon? My friend ordered a glass of Moscato with dessert. At a 6-8oz pour it was a lot of wine for that point in the meal. Maybe an optional shorter pour could be available? All in all a great experience. I love Smack Shack's warehouse, loft look. We come for the lobster roll and will continue to come for the lobster roll. Aside from that, the staff is very accommodating and amiable. Terrific lobster roll (we prefer the regular kind), oysters, and fried clams. Other items depend on personal taste -- I'm not keen on the lobster mac and cheese, but have friends who like it a lot. I'm fond of the fried green tomatoes; one of my friends can't stand them. Portions are generous, service is excellent, vibe is great (though on the loud side), beers on tap are varied and tasty. The atmosphere of this place was really cool and unlike any restaurant I've been to in the Twin Cities. The bar area is cool and you can see some of the kitchen area. However, the service wasn't the greatest and they have some weird seating arrangements. We came in on a Wednesday night around 5:30 and were told the dining room was booked for the rest of the night and we had to find our own seating in the bar area. They almost seemed offended that we tried to walk in and get a table. The clam chowder was very good and the Connecticut Lobster Roll was outstanding. read more

This place is awesome. My experience at Smack Shack was incredible! My bf and I arrived on a Friday night at 6:30 or so and sat by the bar. It was the weekend of the fourth, so i'm not sure how the regular crowd is like on Friday nights, but we were seated right away. Patio seating was about a 15-20 minute wait though. The service was beyond my expectations. Our water came quickly and we were able to order food right away. The staff was super friendly. They were constantly checking in which was nice and our waters were always being refilled. We ordered the lobster guac and the lobster roll connecticut style. We got our guac about 5 to 10 minutes after placing the order, which was fast! The lobster guac was delicious. I highly recommend it. Our lobster rolls arrived about 10 minutes after. They were hot and fresh and were so darn good! The lobster guac and service itself was already 100% for us, but the lobster rolls sealed the deal! This became me and my bf's #1 place for good eats. This was our best experience yet. We can't wait to come back, next time with our friends and family. Oh, it is quite pricey, but it is soooo worth it! read more

Crab cakes- the best item of the 6-7 we tried. Go just for the crab cakes. Oh, and the Boston Cream Pie. Exceptional. Lobster roll(chilled)- tasted only sodium and griddle but great fries. Lobster Mac- again, fairly blah but good amount of lobster in the small portion. Boston clam chowder- heavy on potato and little to no detectable clam in the bowl. Tasted like most I've had before. Lobster guac- tasted fine (it's a typical guac under the lobster) but chips were very stale. Shrimp po' boy decent and friend said his shrimp and grits were great but overall, I wanted to LOVE this place and while it was a great night with friends, great atmosphere and great service, food just not that as great as the hype would suggest... except for the crab cakes. Service has always been wonderful. Food is damn good. Want to say the Lobster Mac and cheese can either be Gooey and decadent or Watery and bland. I like the Gooey and decadent version better so keep it consistent guys!! Lobster roll is good!! That clam chowda is also delicious. I say skip the jalapeño cornbread. I really enjoy the smack shack because I don't feel pretentious while I'm eating there. Yes prices are a little expensive but I like the laid back atmosphere. I wanted to like this place. Cool decor, nice bar area, and great menu. Alas, disappointed! The food was the kicker. Maybe it was the timing, after the lunch hour and before the dinner rush? Not sure. Ordered the Lobster Mac'nCheese and Walleye Po'boy. Food looked good but tasted awful. The lobster claw atop the Mac was limp and watery. Obviously frozen. The Mac itself was bland as well and could have used some seasoning. As for the Walleye, limp and frozen once again. When my displeasure was noticed by my server, who was actually nice and put in an awkward situation, she called for the Manager-Colin. He listened to my experience but only was able to mutter "well, ALL seafood is frozen." I beg to differ Mr Manager. I was over at the Tavern on Grand in St Paul and had a wonderful Walleye meal. Thankfully, my server removed both items from my bill. Since I still needed to eat, I ordered the malpeque oysters. Once again, when delivered the oysters smelled of ammonia and were the most off-colored brown that I have ever seen. Three strikes and you are OUT! So good! I ordered the lobster mac and cheese and boy...it may look like a small serving and nothing special but I was full and I hadn't made a dent into the bowl! And trust me I can eat a lot! The Mac was creamy and paired with the lobster was amazing! And also the design of the place was very cute! I will have to say that although most of the wait staff was very pleasant, my father asked a waitress for another plate and she never got back to us, even though we asked twice...so that was disappointing but nonetheless didn't ruin our experience! Was really excited to try this place, but the food was disappointing, especially for the price. I ordered the lobster roll, which I understood to be one of the "go-to" items on the menu. The bread to lobster ratio was way off, and I found the lobster to lack the refreshing zest that makes a lobster roll taste so great in the summer. It was fine, but nothing special. The rest of our party ordered the shrimp and lobster boils, which were equally just ok. With drinks and appetizers, we dropped $300+ for four people. We won't be going back. Fantastic spot!! We went on a Monday (tonight) and it was booming with people. I started my evening at the front bar for a quick beer. Then I headed to the patio for an appetizer with 2 others. Super cool area..and will be better after construction is done. Great happy hour menu...The lobster sliders were incredible!! Then I joined a party of 10 in the main dinning room. Our server, Curtis was on point! He explained the philosophy of the restaurant and the menu options. The food was outstanding and the ambience was perfect. Went here on a Sunday night, and we were seated instantly. Water and drinks were brought promptly and soon thereafter we ordered. After maybe 20 minutes, our food arrived! My boyfriend got the Lobster Lucy which was incredible and chock full of lobster. I got the special soft shell crab sandwich which was delish if not a bit small. Great atmosphere. Cold lobster roll was very good. Pass on the lobster bisque.....it is not a light, creamy, smooth bisque. It was very thick, lacking flavor, and had no bits of lobster. We know this place has been slammed since they opened. Got a Saturday 6:00 reservation early this week - figured that an early reservation would mean that they'd need to turn our table, so we'd be rushed. Came prepared for that. We were happily mistaken. We weren't rushed a bit, and the food and service were great. Tasted the shrimp po' boy, the lobster corn dogs, crab cakes, and chicken with sausage gravy. Everything was delicious (especially the chicken with sausage gravy - a surprise to all 6 at our table) - and desserts were tasty, as well. Restaurant is loud, but customers overall seemed pretty happy. Yes, you'll probably have to wait, maybe even with a reservation. Will the wait be worth it? Yes! read more
