Visited for the first time yesterday. Had a great bloody mary- very tasty. The server was friendly and attentive and had great energy. Great atmosphere and set up. Tables were too close together. The menu's description of the food was great, food, not so much. Started out with the crab cakes, they were ok. Too thin and small for the price. For 20$ you only got 2 small cakes. And the taste was bluh... I had the stuffed salmon. It wasn't the best but had good flavor and the size was ok. This place has a really fun atmosphere! If you're a beer drinker, it has a a great selection of beers! We didn't plan ahead for reservations so ate in bar, which was quite lively, i.e. loud! Definitely very fresh tasting fish, though perhaps my expectations were a bit high from reviews. I ordered a poor boy sandwich, which for $14, had the scantiest amount of fish, though it was delicious fish! Perhaps if I return with reservations and eat in the dining room, tho it offers same menu as the bar, and order something else, I'll give a higher rating. Saw this restaurant from Guys Divers show and was so excited to finally have eaten in this joint. Unfortunately my expectations were not fully met. We ordered the Warm Lobster roll, Lobster Mac and Cheese, Clam Chowder and Juicy Lucy Burger. My son said that the Lobster Mac and Cheese is good with okay amount of Chunks of Lobster. The large Cost $17 and its served in a normal size bowl. Its very cheesy and filling. My husband ordered the juicy Lucy burger. For him it was filling but nothing to go back for again. He said he would order a different meal if we ever visit again. As for me, the clam chowder for $7.95 was okay, and the lobster roll was good but for $18.95, I expect a fresher lobster meat or a bigger size than what was served. My brother works near the 1029 Bar, where I had the best Lobster Roll of my life before my flight yesterday. I didn't know this was also Smack Shack, a DDD Star. We had a late lunch with our Mom before flying home. The bread adds a richness of butter to the lobster claws. I look forward to graduation season to try the Lobster Mac and Cheese. Started with a sampler of a dozen oysters. Followed with small ceaser salad. Main course was warm lobster roll with fries. Dessert was coconut cake. So the food is great here! I have had brunch and a later dinner here and the food has been really good, however, the service hasn't been great on both of my visits, as the waitstaff comes across somewhat rude and like you are inconveniencing them by being there. Also, the food is really expensive. You get small portions for a pretty hefty price tag. Overall, cool place, good food, but I am not sure it's worth the price. read more

We were here on business from Chicago. Decided to stop by and see what this place was all about. Our server Mark C was very informative, had good knowledge of the menu, offered plenty of suggestions, was friendly and helpful. The food was excellent, an over all A+ experience. We shared the lobster guacamole witch was refreshingly delicious! I had the lobster Cobb also outstanding and my husband had the lobster Lucy and pleasantly surprised. Came for restaurant week for the 4th consecutive time. Always the best deal in the cities, and tons of great food. Got the lobster bisque, lobster guacamole, lobster Mac n cheese, and a lobster roll (cold style). This place is so amazing. Their lobster rolls and po'boys are delicious. It's a loud, crowded, downtown spot and I usually valet if it is evening because parking is not easy to find, but the food is so worth it. To think that this amazing place started out as a food truck is unbelievable. If you want to sit in the main restaurant you will need to make reservations because this place gets busy, but there are usually spots in the bar area available for walk-ins. read more

I was pretty disappointed in the lack of flavor in the Connecticut, I even had to ask for mayonnaise because it was so dry, the fries were great. Ruined 10th wedding anniversary with service which took 2 hours and cold food wrapped in stale bread soaked in lemon juice. After 2 hours of waiting and not eating our bad food the manager asked if we wanted more food. I've never in my life been to a restaurant where a meal was untouched and the waitstaff didn't insist on taking the item off the tab. We declined to wait for more poor quality food, not even sure if it was to be comped, and decided to just write an honest review. Pretty good but with room for improvement! Had 7pm reservations and had to wait about 20 minutes to be seated. Granted it was a Saturday night and this place is still new so hopefully that was just a kink they'll work out. My table started with the crab cake which was quite good. Loved the roasted corn with it. I ordered the Flower Martini which was strong and HUGE! Good deal there. For the entree I split the lobster boil with another person at my table. The waiter recommended the 3 lb size but we opted for the 2.5 lb. Should have went with the 3 lb I think because it was not a lot of lobster to split. Also the potatoes were not fully cooked and were hard. That was disappointing. We got the pre-cracked claws and tail version which was really handy and probably worth the $2 for me! Other people at the table ordered the shrimp boil (same issue with the undercooked potatoes), the blue crab sandwich (really good) and the classic lobster roll (amazing) with a side of clams on the half shell (littlenecks--pretty small but that's about normal for littlenecks. We also tried the oyster shooters with bourbon and bacon. I'm not a big brown liquor drinker but I liked this when I stirred it up so the BBQ sauce in the bottom mixed with the bourbon (my sister made fun of me for making a "rib sauce" shot). We ordered the Boston creme red velvet dessert to split and it was fairly tasty. Loved the sea salt on top to cut through all the sweetness. I thought the service was pretty good. Very friendly staff. It took awhile to get food but it was super packed and the lobster boil seems to take awhile. The atmosphere is really great. Love the old warehouse style building, the use of lobster cages, the mismatched chairs, and the open kitchen. Also loved that we got lobster bibs! All and all it was very fun and the food was still pretty good. I think the lobster roll may still be the best thing on the menu though! I have eaten here twice, once for lunch with a big group and I got take out for dinner once. I really enjoy the place and have now tried quite a bit. The lobster guacamole was good, but I didn't think it was outstanding, the lobster mac and cheese on the other hand was outstanding. The corn adds a nice sweetness and crunch. I also tried the braised beef taco, it was amazing but the portions were very small. For main courses I had the andouille Po' Boy, which had nice heat and flavor to it. It was very rich though, I wasn't able to eat more than half of it (which was fine, I took the other half home.) I also had the fried chicken, this was the best thing I've had here it was amazingly good. Also for $12 it is probably the best deal in the place. I haven't tried the lobster rolls here because I've had them so many times from the truck (if they taste the same here they are amazing) When I had lunch here two people I was with got the Connecticut style roll and were not huge fans. One person was bummed they didn't get the regular roll. The service for lunch was a bit slow, but it was really busy and the first day they were serving lunch so I give them a total pass. *Edit* I have been back a few other times and was not as happy as I was the first few times. Went for lunch with 3 coworkers. The place has a nice feel. The open lobster tank and boiler is cool. Everything on the menu looks awesome. The table ordered the Lobster roll, crab roll, leg of lamb burger, Mani Mani tacos and short rib tacos. Consensus opinion was that the food was just OK tasting. Prices are high and portions are small. Lobster,fries and a glass of water set me back $20. Was it good? Well uh I guess so. I really couldn't taste much lobster, all I could taste was sauce. It was my first Lobster roll so I can't compare it to anything. In the end it was just an overpriced sandwich to me. I am not sure why they call it a roll as it was on grilled white bread. It's refreshing to actually see a place in downtown packed on a Sunday night. The Smack Shack has a great atmosphere and offers a nice selection of lobster items. I ordered the lobster roll and it was delicious. The lobster was fresh and the bread was tasty (maybe a tad soggy). They certainly do not skimp on the chips or fries that come with it! Yes, it may be a little pricey, but it's worth the money. My only complaint is the service (which I've seen other reviewers mention). When they have 25 minute ticket times for sandwiches, it's a little problematic. I was sitting at the bar and the people next to me got their appetizer about 30 minutes after their order. It looks like they have a nice happy hour menu as well. I hope this place continues to succeed because the area needs to grow with more quality restaurants. read more

I've been wanting to try this place since we saw it on Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives. Who would have thought you could find lobster like this in Minnesota? You won't be disappointed. Highly recommended.
