Good food, cool setting, bad service. We went there on a Saturday before a ball game (got there around 11-11:30 am). So on the setting - first off we were seated in a back patio completely separated from the rest of the restaurant which was ok, it gave us the industrial warehouse setting that the neighborhood offers. The restaurant seemed pretty well decorated and maintained inside. The outside patio is pretty cool too if you want to sit in the sun. You can actually see the lobsters crawling around in their pool behind the bar. The guy loading them was cool enough to let us take a picture with him holding some of the lobsters. So overall the environment was pretty cool. The food - I don't like seafood, so my entire review is based on what my group said. They said the food was really good. The lobster pieces in the mac and cheese were really big and tasty. Most everyone finished their plates so it must have been good. The drink selection was decent too, bloody mary, mimosa specials, good variety of beers - I'm a big fan of grain belt, so it's pretty easy to please me in Minnesota. Unfortunately the service was very poor. The food took upwards of 1 hr to get to us. I'm pretty sure they'd forgotten about us since for the most part we were the only people in the back patio, and everyone else in the restaurant was getting served well before us. At about 45-50 minute mark, the manager (I'm guessing) came out and told us our food was on the way soon. She asked us if we wanted any drinks, which I understood as placing an order for more drinks on our tab, but apparently she was offering to buy us a round. She definitely should have been more clear on that because I didn't know that was the case. Finally after our food came out we had to rush to eat and get to the ballgame in time. This completely ruined the experience for me. I really wanted to give a better rating for this place because it's such a cool setting and the food was good, but the service completely ruined it for me and group. As a repeat customer that lives in the north loop, I've typically had great service until recently. The current bar staff has a chip on their shoulder, caters to the younger crowd or friends that they know, and jumps at the opportunity to chastise and embarrass patrons rather than provide standard (at best) customer service. Maybe instead of getting drunk and forgetting where your drinks are being ordered from, staff a bar that knows how to service a crowd. People look to your location to meet and celebrate in the worst of times... don't make that experience a negative as well. read more

Seriously, how do you screw up a lobster roll? Their "Connecticut Style" lobster roll, which is $17, is supposed to be served very warm - both the meat and the bun (like a REAL lobster roll out east). I was served a cold roll with lukewarm lobster meat. The roll was not very big and the amount of meat was...just sad. It came with potato chips because...*facepalm*...french fries were two dollars more. RIPOFF!! And the taste? Not that great either. The roll wasn't very sweet and the unique lobster taste was absent. Smack Shack needs to go study New England and learn how seafood is supposed to be. A lobster roll isn't rocket science. My girlfriend and I split a lobster macaroni. Tasty, I guess, but once again it's clear Smack Shack is more interested in conserving their supply of lobster meat while still charging high Midwestern prices. I'm usually a brunch customer at Smack Shack. I've done dinner once and it was just okay. I don't mean to disparage, but I just got the lobster and it was fine. Brunch is so very very good. I absolutely love the Shrimp Po' Boy and Lobster Roll. I frequently have cravings for those sandwiches. My wife and I prefer to go to the 1029 if it's just going to be us and were just craving the Po' Boy. You have to be careful with the 1029 though since there can be Karoke/Bingo or a crowd in the little bar watching a game. When someone from out of town wants to go somewhere special for dinner though we take them to the one on Washington. (Or if I'm craving Oysters!!) The one downtown is a nice large place that usually isn't too hard to be seated quickly. They also have a lot more on the menu but we haven't deviated too much from the classics; Lobster Mac, Shrimp Po' Boy, Oysters, Lobster Roll. There have been a few things that I tried that I wasn't impressed with. The Fried Perch Po' Boy had a really over powering mustard on it. I couldn't taste anything else. I also tried the Harrissa Lamb sandwich. It's supposed to be tender and medium but what I got was a tough chewy piece of well done lamb. The rosemary au jus definitely had rosemary in it... In fact I couldn't taste anything but salt and rosemary so it tasted like soap to me. Out of the 15+ times we've ate there, most of them have been really positive and keep me coming back. read more

Excellent and trendy décor giving an urban / industrial vibe. Good service, without being obstrusive along with a full bar. Plenty of elbow room so my toddler had room to move around. While I didn't sample the wine selection, we did try their signature items - the Connecticut style lobster roll and the leg of lamb burger. The lobster roll was good without being excellent. The best lobster roll I recall was this little dive in Watertown, MA, so the bar is set pretty high. Demolishing the sandwich though, left me hungry for more. On the other hand, the lamb burger was very good. The Harissa sauce was unique on a burger and the au jus was outstanding. A very clean and meaty flavor. The meat was a bit on the chewy side but lamb can be tricky to get just right. Dessert was a side of French Quarter Pecan Bread Pudding with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. We headed to this restaurant as our destination site and it was well worth it. I had the stuffed salmon and my wife got the cold lobster sandwich. We both enjoyed our inaugural meals. I was a bit disappointed after having heard that this place is THE place to get lobster. We arrived to try out Smack Shack's brunch on a Saturday morning. We ordered lobster scrambled eggs and the lobster roll with chips. Although it all tasted fresh, it just lacked that extra something to make it spectacular. I squeezed lemon on it which improved the taste, but it really needed more salt and seasoning in general. The chips though that came with the lobster roll seemed to have some extra seasoning that would've helped the rest of the dish had it been applied. The lobster scrambled eggs were okay. The eggs were soft as they should be, and the lobster was tasty too. But all in all it was all just a bit overpriced for the food that came out. It has a beautiful patio though for wonderful summery and fall days in Minneapolis, which is never to be missed. The service is of course great. But I don't know that I would have a hankering to come back to spend $20pp for what we got. read more

Great overall experience at smack shack last night. My bf and I made it just in time for happy hour orders (arrived at 5:49) and our bartender/waiter, Steve was beyond awesome in getting our orders in quick so that we got our HH deals (even when time was roughly 6:05pm when he put them in--I'm a very indecisive person so it's good to know he was willing to accommodate us, where most places would tell you HH ends at 5:55pm.) For the order, we decided on bluepoint oysters (a must if you love these NY beauties), fried oyster basket, clam chowda for me (yes, chowda...that's how they spell it), and a Connecticut lobster roll for the bf. The oysters were succulent and tasty, not one bit slimy and gross, with a hint of sweetness. I tend to eat these suckers with lemon and horseradish, versus tobacco sauce, but whichever way you like they're taste great. The fried oyster basket wasn't that appetizing after the first bite. It tasted like how a large oyster should taste, guts and all, and it made me regret ordering. If you like this sort of thing then by all means go for it! It taste delicious, fresh off the fryer, but I couldn't get over the undercooked feeling I had, once I had a bite (ironic, I know, since I just spent time talking about raw oysters earlier.) Next, my chowda was excellent! It had the right consistency and texture--loaded with potatoes and clams. I did wish they would have snuck in a piece of bacon or two into the pot just for a little something, something but I know only some places would venture outside the traditional recipes to do that so overall, it was quite filling and tasty. Now for that crustacean roll. I've never had a lobster roll undress before but then again, I've never had one outside of smack shack so this was a new experience. I liked how everything tasted however. There was no mayo to overpower the sweet, delicate taste of the lobster and that butter bun, man that butter bun, I could triple stack those any day. Hmm..... What a cool place! I would definitely give Smack Shack another chance.. but I'll lay out my experience for you: -We had a group of 5, reservation at 7pm on Friday. I got there first at 7:02pm, walk up to the desk, and tell them I'm there for my party. They said that they gave away our reservation because they had it down for 5:30pm and we never showed. Uh, well we're here now and you got it wrong? So the hostess was very polite, and said her general manager was going to fit us in... Then the rest of the party shows up about 7:10pm (she had even called to say they were running late, thus ran into the we gave away your reservation) -- the actual person who the reservation was for, and they told her that we would be the next group in and they weren't sure how the screw up happened. Hey, it happens, and they're new, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. A couple groups got to go ahead of us, so we ended up waiting until 7:40ish to get to table. Hm... -As expected, the prices were high. I wasn't too concerned but also had a budget for the entire evening. Smack Shack took 1/3 of that budget. There are a few things on the menu that you can get that aren't expensive, but they are also not the most delicious. So I thought, hey why not, and ordered a $17 SANDWICH. With Kettle Chips. Since when did restaurants decide it was acceptable to not serve fries as a free alternative? I know I've been around for awhile, but I'd just like to throw that question out in the universe. Drinks were typical ($6 for greyhound, $5 or $5.50 for Strongbow & Summit) so at least they didn't overcharge for those. -I ordered a Blue Crab Po' Boy. It was described as spicy and had fresh jalepenos on it when it came out. The sandwich was generous and what I expected to be mayo-ed down (yeah, that's a new verb. Mayo-ed.) crab was actually stuffed full of fresh crab meat. The sandwich was awesome - except it wasn't as spicy as I thought it was going to be. I hate to add sriacha or tabasco.. but I had to do it. It was a tremendous sandwich that filled me up but add more spice please! I ate about 5 chips because I really didn't want to spend $2 for fries, and overall I was pleased with my meal. -Our waiter was very funny and entertaining, but at times I wondered if he were paying attention. He even said at one point how nervous he was (again, new place), but that added to his charm. He spilled water all over the table but it wasn't even that big of a deal because, well, we were a cool group of chicks. Overall, he made the whole experience a whole lot better, and if it weren't for him I probably wouldn't say I'd be back. -Overall, I'd like to try Smack Shack again, probably for lunch. I'm impressed if the food truck can sell cash only $15+ sandwiches, so obviously the restaurant was a good idea. They obviously have a few things to figure out, and I wish that they would've offered us all free drinks for the inconvenience. Been going here for a couple of years. Every time I have gone here the service has gotten just a little worse then the time before, the parking has gone up I'm price. Last time I went was my wife's birthday and even told the server that and she did not even say happy birthday. Also gotten the lobster Mac and cheese and there seems to be less and less lobster in it. May as well just call it Mac and cheese now. This place no longer deserves myself and my wife as a customer. There's something to be said for a "grace period" We came here when it first opened (We live across the street) and, if I would have spent money on gas to get here I would have been pissed. But, since it was walking distance and I didn't feel like cooking it was worth a try. We had a reservation and after 30mins in the bar were finally seated in the loudest spot in that place. Our waitress took her sweet time getting to us, and she spoke so softly we literally had to stand up to hear her. Started with the oyster shooters, lobster guac, oysters (Long Islands), Lobster mac and some other un-memorable stuff. Lobster mac was AMAZE, lobster guac was creamy with no chucks and lobster was rubbery. Same deal with our main courses, we barely ate anything as it was just all a big mess.....took forever, had ONE drink all night..... SO... we were really disappointed.... REDEMPTION: Cut to Sunday, we were with some friends that wanted to eat at the bar and drink so we hopped on up to give this all a second go around.... It was amazing, wonderful, polite, fun.... they really got the kinks out. And, the best part (which it should be) was the food. Warm and thoughtful. Cooked just right, and our totally rad bartender Adam educated us on the menu, pairings, beer choices and it was all around just a good time. Lips (Smack)in', Lobsta (Shack)in'. I tried. I also tried to justify Smack Shack's incredibly high price tag, but kinda failed... Yes, I get it that seafood in general is expensive, not to talk about lobsters, but I couldn't help but feel like I still wasn't quite getting the bang for my buck. Atmosphere is what I'd like to call "poppin!" AKA very lively crowd, makes you wanna hop in, and well, you know, get poppin' and groovin' with the rest of the diners (isn't that what you all do?...or is it just me?)! My friend and I both ordered the Conneticut-Style Lobster Roll--warm lobster tossed in butter, lemon, and chives, served on a warm split top bun (think hot dog bun here). The roll was served with chips but my friend subbed in Lobster Mac n' Cheese instead for an extra $11--Holy moly lobster guacamole (yes they have Lobster Guac on their menu too for a whopping $15.95)!! Definitely didn't think the mac n' cheese was worth it; the cheese to me was way too soupy and there were barely any lobster pieces in the dish. My first bite into the roll though and I was sold. I thought- Yup, better than the lobster rolls I've had in NYC (don't know if that's saying much?), and yup, definitely tasting that oh-so-heavenly buttery goodness. But it was kinda like a love-at-first-bite-only-to-realize-my-date-was-a-not-so-hot-lobsta kind of situation. I loved how you could really taste the lobster since it wasn't hiding under the usual mayonaisey sauce, but to be honest, there was no wow factor taste--I found it somewhat bland. I must say, they definitely loaded the bun up with a ton of lobster meat. Chips were meh, although I guiltily admit to having continually shoved them in my mouth only after having generously showered all of them with the table-side Old Bay Seasoning. I don't know... I mean if I were Donald Trump's son with Benj. Franklins as fingers, then I'd be all over this place, throwing bills here and there while filling my fat mouth with lobster galore. But I'm not. So I guess I'll only be coming out here when I get my next big pay check. Or when there's a lobster apocalypse and I gotta savor all there is before all the beautiful shellfish are gone. read more

I have been to MN twice and on both occasions, I visited this place to indulge on their lobsters. Fresh and cooked to perfection, using only Old Bay and onions, just the way I like it. I ordered the 2lb lobster this time and it was succulent and did not taste overcooked. The butter boil was so delicious that I was tempted to drink it (and I would have if my cholesterol was not already high). A radio personality called Smack Shack a "game changer" for the warehouse district restaurant scene, so I stopped in to have a meal and see what it's all about. When you walk in, the first thing you notice is "the" machine that is the lobster boiler, followed by the live lobster tank behind it. The decor reminds me a little bit of Stella's but with a more rustic touch. Is it a game changer, though? I had the warm lobster roll with smack fries. Even for $18, the lobster inside the sandwich wasn't good enough of quality to justify it. While you can tell the lobster is fresh, it's mostly claw meat and the smaller pieces were way overcooked. NOTHING KILLS THE TASTE OF FRESH SEAFOOD THAN OVERCOOKING IT. Plus, it's annoying that you have to pay $2 to substitute for terrible fries. They were semi rock hard, oversalted, and the addition of Old Bay in the mix just ruins it, in my opinion. For a $20 lunch, I expected a lot more. In the end, Smack Shack really isn't upping the caliber of the Twin Citie's dining scene. Boiled lobster isn't anything new, and certainly not exciting by foodie standards. But Smack Shack has been able to draw in crowds by being a new restaurant with a well-known restaurauter behind it (Josh Thoma), not to mention having the state of art lobster cooking technology. Oh, Lordt! This place. We stumbled upon this restaurant full of delicious seafood merely by browsing the Yelp search while in town over Labor Day, and we honestly thought about visiting again the next few nights. Ultimately forced ourselves to see what else Minneapolis had to offer. My fiancee and I both got the Connecticut-style Lobster Rolls and split the smaller order of the Lobster Mac n Cheese. Holy goodness!! The Lobster roll was slightly warmed and served on a delicious little role with very few fixings so you could really taste and enjoy the lobster. I had mine come with chips, while he chose fries. With the Old Bay at the table, everything got a dusting. Divine. The Mac n cheese was legit. Probably the smoothest, creamiest mac I've had (and I've eaten a lot of mac in my day), along with huge chunks of lobster. Amazing. Our waiter was very helpful in running through the menu with us, as we'd never been there before. Our drinks came out promptly, and were never low for very long. We're already planning a trip back to this place, and got even more excited to see they have a location in Chicago where we have family. read more

Went for dinner last night with Mom. Our server (Brian?) was very friendly and kept checking in on us. I had a Jameson Ginger Ale, too light on the booze. The wine we got was a better choice after that. Brian was really good about suggesting items and portions. We went with the wedge salad and lobster roll, both split. The salad was fabulous, the bacon was more like hunks of ham but delicious. Fresh tomatoes, awesome dressing. Decent size for the price. The lobster roll is always a good pick, the bread is awesome. The food here is good. We are here for restaurant week in July. The menus offered choices from a sample menu that includid some hits and some misses. I had the oysters which were good. Shrimp civiche (spelling?) Was aslo pretty good and the Lobster Mac with cold style lobster roll . The lobster Mac was exceptional, the cold serve lobster roll not so much. Bread was soggy and falling apart and the lobster mix Had to many subtle wet flavors. We finished with key lime pie which was also amazing. Over all the food was good but the hero/entree was nothing special , maybe ok at $9.00, but sense it is regularly $16.00 this sucker better dazzle me. Sadly it fell far short. Additionally my chief complaint falls on service and drink prices. 1) I had ordered a sailor Jerry dark and stormy. When I received it the drink had the appearance of a rum and 7up. Also did not taste like sailor Jerry. 2) Apon receiving my bill I noticed I was charged $11.00 for a captain Morgan drink? 3) substatution with out asking you customer is a dooosh move. We had dinner here for my husband's birthday. He was looking for seafood and was thrilled with all our selections. Their take on charcuterie with seafood was very good 9with the exception of the scallops--not our favorite). He loved his stuffed salmon and the fish in my fish and chips was flaky and delicious. My husband said it was the best meal he could remember, and that's saying a lot seeing as how we spent a month in Italy this spring. Absolutely love coming here. My favorite dish is their Lobster Mac N' Cheese. It is not too heavy and they don't skimp out on the lobster! Not sure if that's why it took so long or not but still, ridiculous. Also - through this entire hour, our waiter talked to us at best two times. The waiter also continued to interrupt conversations and "hang out" at our table both times for an uncomfortable amount of time ... very awkward. The food is great. We eat in or take it to go at least once a week all through Covid. Parking is atrocious if you're eating in, so we typically order to go. Unfortunately, I won't return after our last visit. We arrived and didn't have a reservation but we're fine with waiting for an outdoor (covered) table. They seated us and we were being rained on. We asked if they could move us to a table further back, one had just opened, we were told no. I asked inside if there was anywhere else to move and the manager Dave on 10/1/21 at 9:15 was extremely rude and his comment was "Sorry I can't control Mother Nature." I literally only wanted a seat that wasn't wet. I said as I know you cannot control the rain (sarcasm was not necessary on his part) you can control where you put tables and customers when it's raining or even have a plastic barrier to shield customers from the rain. He said "I have other reservations to worry about tonight!" Then he proceeded to tell me that it's a historic building that plastic cannot be done. Meanwhile, multiple open tables were available and the entire upstairs was open. There was no apology or any other solution offered, even waiting longer. We saw multiple other people just leave. He only said "I can't control the rain." After waiting 40 minutes to get a wet seat, and no other options presented, I find this appalling. I wasn't even looking for a spot inside, just something dry. When things were shut down, I was still frequenting your business weekly, Mr. Josh Thoma and spent thousands of dollars there. I even placed a to go order that night because I was starving and still spent $100, even after being treated that poorly. Never again, not with that kind of treatment by your staff. read more

We walked in with no reservation. We were told it would be 1.5 hour wait. The atmosphere was so fun we didn't care. We went to the bar closest to the main dining room because it was less crowded. After 45 minutes we were seated upstairs. We felt like we won the lottery. The moral of the story- you may get in sooner then you think. Our waitress was awesome- big shout out to Brenna ( not sure how to spell her name). We ordered the lobster guacamole- it was awesome. I had the lobster boil- it is a huge meal. Keep in mind the price is per pound not the total. Loved the lobster- I ordered it lazy style but I really love the sausage. Our guests ordered the rolls one Maine style and one Connecticut style. Both looked great. My hubby the non fish eater ordered the fried chicken which he said was great. He also said he would go back in a heartbeat. He has never said that about a fish restaurant before. For dessert we ordered the Mud Pie- can't go wrong with that. However, next time I would get the Red Velvet Cream Pie. The hard part of this restaurant is you want to order a non lobster dish but you don't want to miss out on why it is so good. The atmosphere is great! read more

Heard a lot of their lobster rolls so of course I had to order it myself. They had two options a cold or warm roll. A friend recommend the warm roll.... she said "butter" and I instantly said "YES!" She was right, it was delicious. The roll had so much lobster I could barely keep it in the bun. It was great! I probably shouldn't have eaten so quickly, but it couldn't be helped. Yesterday on a Saturday, we a party of six drove to the Smack Shack at 603 Washington Ave. N Minneapolis from Rochester with hungry anticipation. Heard good reviews. Had the popular Connecticut Style Lobster Roll with Cajun fries. Gulp! $19.95 each! Over priced for poor quality. Everyone's lobster meat was "dry" and tasteless. We were expecting a pure flavorful lobster delight. No flavor! How can that be? The bun inside was dry served with lettuce topped with tasteless lobster meat. So disappointed. Not returning. Starters were Fried Green Tomatoes (tasty crunch but oily), Lobster Guacamole (good w/ great tortilla chips), 2 orders from Bloody Mary Bar (good), Boston Cream, Key Lime and Whoopie pies (good). Food reminded me of vacations to the east coast! Some say the food isn't as good, but I actually like it. Even more so that it's located in MN and can get a lobster roll that fresh! Parking was easy and line wasn't too long post lunch and before dinner. read more

Food: Fried Shrimp Po'Boy was a huge portion. It came with two smaller sandwiches. If you are not a big eater, you can split it with a friend. The fried shrimp quickly became soggy from the sauce. They were generous with the amount of shrimps because they were falling out of the sandwich and it was very messy to eat. Service: The hostess and waitress were welcoming and flexible. They were willing to let us switch tables. However, when my friend paid in cash they owed her $3.95. They gave her $3 dollars back. It might have been a mistake, but we thought it was odd. Ambiance: It was a lively atmosphere and it was very busy. I wished the weather was nicer because the patio was gorgeous for eating on a summer day. Did a late dinner here our last night in MSP. We split the lobster roll and wings, and washed it down with a couple local craft brews. Loved the atmosphere and feel of the place. Modern and classy but very laid back, not at all what we expected from the name. Great brew selection and the lobster was awesome! read more

Solid joint in Mpls. Larger selection of East Coast and Southern types of good in the North. Had the Connecticut Lobster Roll. Amazing amount of fresh lobster. Had 2 oysters during Happy Hour, solid. Wings we split at table were also great. Great lunch menu. Highly recommend. read more
