Ordered the lobster burger and by the looks of it you'd think it would be tasteful and delicious. Looks are deceiving. Very plain and bland. I went with a party of 8 on a Saturday at 3 pm recently. There were surprisingly quite a few parties having late lunches/early dinners at that time. I had: 1. Bowl of Clam Chowder - subpar, I didn't taste much clam but there was lots of potato chucks. It was comparable to having a can of Progresso. 2. Fries - very basic, McDonald's fries have more going for it. I also tried a bite of my friend's lobster roll and the meat was tough, I'm assuming it wasn't the freshest or it was improperly stored - we are located in the Midwest so no surprise there. The total was $13 before tax and tip. Service - friendly and on top of things, water refilled and our table was checked on the several times. Atmosphere - big, industrial and warehouse-y, I guess that's the look they are going for. I've had the Lobster Mac & Cheese and other fare at The 1029 Bar and in that setting it was something different and appealing when I was drinking, but the food by itself cannot stand alone. If I did go back I would try their oysters or po' boy sandwiches but beware of their mediocre overprice seafood items. If you're looking to impress out of town guests or get good food at a decent price you should consider some other options in the North Loop. read more

I've been craving a Lobster Roll since my last (and first) Lobster Roll in Boston. I was also due for a very belated Mother's Day treat for my momma and she chose this place. My mom got the blackened catfish po' boy and I got the lobster roll (of course). I looooove my mom's blackened catfish, it was very flavorful and had a nice kick to it. My lobster was very delicious, but I don't think I was in a mood for a cold sandwich. Both our sandwiches came with seasoned chips which was delicious, you could also upgrade to smack fries for $2 more, but we opted out. Our server, Christina, was amazing. She was super friendly and helpful and was amazing with water refills (I drank a lot of water). I would definitely go back, there are so many other things on the menu that sound amazing. The smack shack definitely lived up to the food truck and the 1029 - and the interior is pretty swank and hip. I definitely liked it - plus the HUGE lobster tank and boiling pot when you walk in is pretty cool. Our waiter seemed a little ummm like a doofus? He just wasn't very on - at all and - well it was just weird. It wasn't a bad situation - just hard to describe. But the food was good, the prices have gone up some - but i guess that is to be expected due to more overhead than just a truck .. . and no more king roll on the menu for lobster rolls! Was kinda bummed as I was hoping to split it. The clam chowder was a little grainy - but it was still tasty and I stuck w/ the lobsta roll - still delish and my fave out of all the places i have tried them (yes - even east coast!!) My boy got the lobster boil - lobsta was tasty and it comes with a lot of sides - kinda spendy? $43 for a 1.5 lb lobster - you do get a lot to go with it . ..but still seems like a lot to me? Yes, it's a bit overpriced. But the atmosphere is fun, and the food is good ol' lip-smackin' delicious. Summer must bring out my hankering for seafood as I have had Smack Shack food twice in the past week! Neither meal disappointed as you can't go wrong with either of their most popular dishes--lobster mac and cheese and the lobster roll. This review is more of a 3.5/5 since service wasn't the best, but I appreciated having my own Old Bay seasoning can to sprinkle on my chips and fries so I'll round up. read more

Hello dear Smack Shack, So, I have been inside the Smack Shack 3 times now, however just got the opportunity to eat there this previous weekend. The other two times were long waits, and my stomach can't handle that. So, just a helpful suggestion to make a reservation or go at a time other than Saturday evening at 7pm. The hostess made me a deal that she would give us a table this time as long as we were out in a little over an hour. A time limit triggers my anxiety like no other, but I really wanted to eat all of the lobster so challenge was accepted. The decor of this place is super cute, cozy, and also adds in a little dose of picnic feel. Like we are talking beautiful wood/brick with a side of checkered picnic table cloth. Our waitress was so friendly and delightful, she was great. My partner and I decided to split a Connecticut lobster roll as well as the lobster mac and cheese because we both needed both of them. Last year I went to Maine and had alllllllll the brown butter lobster rolls so the bar was set high. Smack Shack's lobster roll came close to the deliciousness that I experienced. Okay, that lobster mac and cheese....I know this will probably be the least popular yelp review I have ever written....but I don't love the mac and cheese. The first bite or two when it is hot and runny it is great, but once it starts solidifying a bit my texture issues just can't handle it. I can appreciate the flavor, but the cheese coated my mouth and I find myself needing something to break that up. My dinner partner lovedddddd the lobster mac so I suggest trying it, I think I can only handle a few bites at a time. On the brightside, I needed something to break up the richness of the mac and cheese so we ordered the keylime pie which was probably my #1 choice I have ever made in life. Meh. That is how I feel after eating here, how I feel about the food, and how I feel about the service. Maybe lobster mac and cheese is a bit too heavy for a later evening meal but I wanted to try lobster and this seemed the safest way. Now it may seem silly to go here as I don't really enjoy seafood but I just have to try it out. Pork tacos are always a safe choice right?. I should know by now not to get tacos in costal themed restaurant in downtown Minneapolis. My non-seafood loving friend tries out the hamburger and has no complaints. The seafood loving member of our group goes with the Conneticut Po-Boy Sandwhich and he seems quite pleased. That and he finds an IPA he had not tried yet which he considers quite a success. We are seated right away and waited on extremely fast. I do really enjoy the ambiance. If we were rating on that alone I would definitely give it 5 stars! The recommendations on beer and food work out pretty well for some of us. After getting our bill it takes at least 15 minutes before our cards were swiped and we were out the door. This has been on my list forever and I came here for a Thursday dinner with friends for a reunion. Lobster lobster lobster! Everything had lobster and everything was scrumptious. We got the lobster corn dogs and oyster sliders which were out of this world! Their remoulade is tangy and I would put it on anything! Then I had the Connecticut lobster roll, hot roll with butter tossed lobster. Yum!! For their sides, you have to get their lobster mac and cheese, grits and collard greens. We went to Smack Shack two nights in a row, both for my birthday in May. It definitely makes getting closer to 30 a little easier. The first night was just the bf and I, which was nice. We were able to get a patio table right away. The patio is gorgeous, with awesome planters on the railings filled with flowers. I got a cider and he got a beer, they have a nice selection. I decided on the lobster roll and he got the lobster grilled cheese. The lobster roll was awesome! The griddled milk bread was the perfect sandwich compliment to a lightly dressed lobster salad. The grilled cheese was pretty yummy too, melty cheese and asparagus complimenting the lobster chunks. On night two, we went with the bf's dad & his wife. This time we were seated in the bar area at the long table. We had some mixed drinks and beer. I don't remember the drinks but they were good. I got the Connecticut style lobster roll. It was delicious too. I like the regular one better, but the bf loved this one. Just a matter of preference, as both are delicious and full of lobster. The bf and his dad had the lobster lucy, they both loved it. The lobster and cheese were great, and they couldn't stop raving about how great the burger itself was. His dad's wife got the fish po' boy and loved it. I got to eat her leftovers and it was yummy. I can't wait to go back, and it's going to be really hard not to order the lobster roll every time. I've been dying to try Smack Shack since I heard that they serve lobster mac n' cheese. Today, I visited for dinner with my aunt, who is from out of town. The restaurant is absolutely beautiful. I love the lighting and decor. We sat on the patio, since it was a lovely summer evening. Everything on the menu looked amazing, but prices were a bit higher than what I was expecting. Perhaps it's because I knew it started as a food truck, so I was expecting a little more "homestyle" and a little less "upscale". I ordered the Lobster Roll and my Aunt ordered the Lump Crab Cakes, and then we got a large order of Lobster Mac to split. The food came VERY quickly, and it was just as delicious as I was hoping it would be. The lobster filling in my lobster roll was very cool and refreshing, and the thick cut toast it was served on was delightfully buttery. It came served with a generous portion of kettle cooked chips. My aunt was also very pleased with her crab cakes. The Lobster Mac, however, stole the show. Very thick, creamy, cheese, with lots of sharp, zesty flavor. Huge chunks of lobster, and perfectly cooked pasta noodles. Our waitress was wonderful. My aunt is a bit of a jokester, and she played along the whole time, teasing us about "fighting" over the mac n' cheese. She was very attentive to our needs and made sure we knew we could stick around and chat after dinner-- no rush to pay the check. The price, though higher than originally expected, was decent considering the satisfaction we got from our meals. it came to $55, for essentially 3 entrees (the lobster mac is its own entree). Literally my only complaint is regarding the gentleman who brought our food to the table. My aunt told him "She had the lobster roll", trying to be helpful (since he didn't take out order), and he said in a shockingly sarcastic manner "Thank you" -- As if to say he was well aware of who had which meal, and she was in poor taste to say anything. Not sure if he just had a particularly bad attitude today, or if he doesn't realize how his tone comes off to others. I don't know *how* I didn't know Smack Shack had their own restaurant, but when I saw them on the list for restaurant week, my friends and I decided to meet for lunch. Now I know this isn't quiiiite down town, but JFC the parking is such a joke. Took me 3 minutes to drive from work but 10 doing circles to try and find parking. So many permit only lots, or meters that you can't park at until after 3pm unless you're a delivery truck, cool! I finally found a spot 2 blocks away. Maybe I'm just bad, but if there was a ramp nearby I didn't see it. Anyway, the restaurant itself seems to be what you'd expect for a lobster/seafood themed place. Lobster/crab traps on the walls, etc. Pretty open, which was nice, but we had problems flagging down our server when we were ready to order. So restaurant week was a calamari app, a few choices for the entrees/sides, and a lemon whoopie pie (I think at least) for dessert. The calamari was fantastic, cooked perfectly with some peppers for a bit of heat and a delicious aioli dip. I got the lobster roll (half size for lunch) because I'm super boring but god damn it was so good. Friends each got the mac n' cheese for their side but I went with the ceasar salad, which was nice, they actually used fresh parm flakes which is a nice touch. The dessert was tasty, my friend thought the lemon filling was too sweet but I thought it was spot on. It was served with a couple sauces, one was a blueberry which paired very well with the lemon. Sadly all of this took about 1.5 hours...I'm sure some of that was due to the busy-ness of restaurant week. We had to wait a few extra minutes though because when our server brought our tab back my receipt wasn't in there and both our cards were missing, my friend actually had to walk up to her at the pay area since she wasn't heading/looking in our direction. This would have been a 3 star review but the food is too good for that. However, it's way more convenient for me to just go across the river to the 1029 Bar, where there is ample parking, so if I return to the actual restaurant it will probably be because someone else wants to go. read more

Really love Smack Shack! The staff and food are always on point. One of my favorite things on the menu is the braised lamb sandwich. I always have leftovers when I get this at lunch, but that's the case with nearly any sandwich or meal I get here. The portions are generous, so I'm a little confused how much food some of these reviewers think you need to eat in one sitting... Lobster mac n cheese is always a great choice, and if you have at least one other person with you the lobster boil is amazing and great for sharing! Oh, and get that side of collard greens, they do an awesome job with those. When I worked in the neighborhood this was my spot several days a week for lunch. Granted some days it would just be a bowl of soup or salad so I didn't need a nap the rest of the day, but the service was always quick, friendly, and food arrived in plenty of time to enjoy it. Really great happy hour, with plenty of food options for snacking and drink specials. I generally stick to lunch time, happy hour, or dinner early to mid week. Friday and Saturday nights you can end up with more of the obnoxious north loop area party kids surrounding both bars, which is really not my thing. I've had only two items come out wrong and one time lobster was overcooked in the last three years, and each time I politely expressed my concerns and their staff took care of it right away without question. As I read some of the complaints here in reviews, I have to wonder how many took the time to address it while at the restaurant rather than just taking to the internet after leaving. I'd encourage anybody who feels let down by a dish to let them make it right while you're there so you can leave happy as well. That really goes for any dining experience. read more

Seafood lovers rejoice! The food is everything you'd expect it to be if you know the truck. If you don't know the truck, it's pretty damn good. My average rating unfortunately goes for the experience. I made a reservation for my birthday dinner a week in advance because I knew how busy they would be having just opened. When my party arrived, my reservation was nowhere to be found. We eventually figured out that my reservation for 5 people at 7:00 had been written down as 7 people at 5:00. Ok, first two weeks I can understand mix ups. But they did absolutely nothing to make amends. I was told we would get the next available table, but watched 3 parties of the same size get seated. What really made me mad was watching the hostess and manager talking about us, pointing at our group then shaking their heads and going to another group. Once we were seated, our waiter was very funny and entertaining but really clumsy, spilling water and dropping things left and right. I'm willing to give it another try because their food is wonderful, and the space is very cool. I'll just wait awhile for them to get their act together. read more

What a pleasant surprise during our visit to Minnesota. Didn't have time to stay and eat so grabbed a to go order of the lobster Mac and cheese and the shrimp and grits. The grits were damn near perfection. Haven't had grits that good since i've been to Florida. The shrimp and andouille sausage were just the right amount of spice. But on to the important stuff! Everything we ordered was fabulous! We had a specialty drink that tasted like apple cider with a kick. The mussels appetizer was perfection and a very generous portion! This place is a reservation-only except for the bar area. I hear that it gets crowded, but my friend and I were able to find a small two seater in the corner. The vibe of this area was lively and it definitely felt like a downtown bar. Music was playing and there was a game of Minneapolis roulette that a group of boys were playing. I LOVE lobster so I had to try this place out. Atmosphere - cool/trendy place that has a warehouse feel to grab food and even drinks. Food - lobster dominates the menu which i was happy about. There are two kinds of lobster roll, chill and cold. I tried the lobster roll warm, And after eating lots of lobster rolls, this which was decent. The lobster was fresh and light - it wasn't overwhelmed with mayo. At the same time, it could use a little more flavor. The original cold lobster roll was good too on a different buttered toast. Next time I'll ask for the warm lobster on that butter toast. The lobster mac and cheese was way too rich! I couldn't eat more than a few bits but it did have large lobster pieces. The lobster juicy Lucy was delicious. I mean, who doesn't love a juicy Lucy and bonus when there's lobster pieces on top Good fries, they let you put on your own Cajun spice. Normally, we come here for the crab. The better half had the usual....I went for the seasonal halibut. Turned out to be an excellent choice. White, light, and flaky, the halibut retained its slight grilled flavor and the lemon cous cous turned out to be the perfect accompaniment to the fish. Still nibbled on the wife's crab legs - how can I resist? This year's crab has been sweet. The lobster corn dogs were a great starter. Good beer and wine selection. And did I mention the Red Velvet Boston Creme pie? Leave room for THIS dessert! So far, been here almost a dozen times and have not been disappointed. Ate at the bar and had an extremely friendly and helpful bartender whose name I can't remember (Boston guy). I'd never been to the area before and the walk on Washington certainly was an experience (they sure love their gentlemen's clubs in Minneapolis). Worth the trip. read more

Went here based on other Yelp reviews. And Im glad I did. Grabbed a seat at the bar and started off with the clam chowdah. It was excellent. I just ordered a cup and it was almost a meal in itself. It was hot, thick and creamy and with nice chunks of potatoes and good hunks of clams. Then I ordered the "Lobster Lucy" Their take on the Juicy Lucy. Their menu describes it as a burger stuffed with lobster and cheese. The description is a little off. The cheese is there but they put the lobster on top, not actually in the burger. But it didnt break the burger. It can be a little bit messy. But it was still good. I definitely want to go back and try other items on their menu. read more

After popping my lobster roll cherry at Smack Shack, I've tried lobster rolls at many other places (including coastal cities known for such things) and I've been back to Smack Shack a few times. This is hands down my favorite Lobster Roll joint. I still prefer the warm roll, but both are top notch. They also have an amazing wedge salad, and it's HUGE. On April 1, 2021 I picked up several items to go for a late lunch, which included the Bouillabaisse. I told the server that I would be taking the Bouillabaisse up to my cabin (in a cooler) -- a 2-hour + drive -- for my husband to have. Little did I know that the Bouillabaisse was in a paper carton (the order was in a bag which I did not open). By the time I arrived at my destination, the carton had totally disintegrated, and the soup/seafood was inedible, not to mention the complete mess it made in my cooler and even on my clothes. $29.95 dollars down the drain. The rest of my order which I had shared with my friend who lives in the North Loop area was sub par. So a total of $90+ wasted. We have been to Smack Shack a few times. First few were mediocre, but our last visit (2/9) was bad. I don't care about a long wait, as long as the food is worth it, but it wasn't. I ordered the lobster Mac and Cheese - there was zero flavor, the cheese was properly melted, but there were only 5 small pieces of lobster in it and there were no bread crumbs on it. It was terrible. The Shrimp and Grits was only impressive with the giant shrimp. The Juicy Lucy didn't have cheese in the middle and was over cooked. The only good thing at our table was the Cubano. Once again very disappointing. $21.00 (And this was lunch!) For a fish sandwich and coleslaw. Barely any of the smelly fish under the breading. Never had such foul smelling WALLEYE . And this was lunch! We also had the LOBSTER GUACAMOLE, appetiser ("STARTERS") that was ok. And I suppose the $17.00 price tag for this is for the lobster (there was some nice pieces of lobster on the guacamole). And that is why the two stars.
