After being relocated to Minneapolis a couple years ago this was the first restaurant I ate at and it was amazing the first time and every time since solid 10/10 experience. They put so much effort into being the top notch restaurant in the neighborhood and it shows with the quality of the experience you receive. Just Go! There's not a bad seat in the house the patio is perfect for downtown people watching, inside seating is dangerous you'll order the whole menu from the delicious smells coming from the seafood pots and you can't go wrong with the bar for a fun happy hour experience. This place is massive and is often busy. I was here on a Friday evening for a friend's birthday dinner. We had reservations so it was easy and quick to seat us. I would recommend reservations at busy times and/or with large groups. Food: The Lobster Mac and cheese is RICH and delicious. I would definitely order this again. Chicken and waffles was good, not great. I'd try other things on the menu. The Lobster Lucy was different, definitely a MN original type of burger. Such a fun time at the Smack Shack! I got the lobster boil and it was sooo delicious. It came with a whole 1.5 pound lobster, corn, sausage, potatoes, a dram of butter, and a side of broth from cooking the meat for dipping. Everything was perfectly seasoned, and the lobster was tender. The North Loop location was a great place to sit on the patio and enjoy the weather and my meal. It almost felt like I was by the ocean with my fresh catch! Our server was attentive and even helped me crack open a lobster claw- much appreciated because that is hard work! Went with a friend for restaurant week - restaurant was about 1/4 full. It took about 15 minutes once seated for a server to come over and the service was incredibly slow after that. Almost painful at times how long we were waiting between courses or just at the beginning waiting to order a drink. We ended up ordering all courses at once to attempt to make the wait better - that being said, my friend wanted another drink and never got the chance to ask because the waiter never came back to check in until we were done with dessert. The food was amazing - highly recommend getting the lobster guacamole or lobster Mac and cheese for appetizers - you seem to get the most bang for your buck here. For an entree I had the jambalaya and it was to die for. Key lime pie for dessert was also great. Serving size for everything during restaurant week is still very generous. For a drink I had the hummingbird and it was pretty AND strong! Would recommend. Was searching for seafood when I found this place! It was a bit challenging finding parking because this is located in downtown. There was a lot of street parking, though all taken. We luckily found a street parking a block away, and walked to the restaurant. We did not make reservations, but were seated right away. Though we were told it'd take at least 20mins before we could be serviced, it was quicker than that. Staff was attentive, knowledgeable, and professional. The bathroom has many stalls, and was clean and nice! No complaints! We ordered the New England Boil (a pound of each), and mussels, wings, and a margarita! The seafood was delicious! This was top of my list for summer of 2021 bucket list eats- ended up going the same day as crafting the list because just couldn't wait to chow down! Delicious seafood with LARGE servings of meat! I had been meaning to enjoy a meal at Smack Shack for many months before I finally made it happen on a summer Saturday. We were looking to enjoy the gorgeous weather, and their open air dining room was perfect! We opted for cocktails and small plates which was a blessing as we got to try a few staples!! We ultimately settled on oysters, peel and eat shrimp, and lobster poutine which was a great sampler! The oysters were solid, and the sauces they come with were unique and enjoyable! Definitely stepped it up from cocktail sauce. The lobster poutine was something that I was really excited about, and the gravy exceeded expectations! I will warn, though, this is an incredibly rich dish. It may be more suited to a fall day than the weather we are currently having, but it is always a treat! Finally, I most loved the cold peel and eat shrimp! They were seasoned perfectly, and cooked very well so the texture was great. Maine-like Lobster in downtown Minneapolis? Yep! We tried a number of lobster entries and appetizers and they were all great. The Lobster Pontine was a excellent way to start any meal... Cajun fries covered with a cheesy gravy topped by a bunch of sweet, tasty lobster. The fries had a little bit of a kick to them, and they were really rich (all the cheese, butter and lobster had something to do with that), but were so good. The same was true about the Lobster Mac & Cheese, a big pile of lobster on top of creamy cheesy elbow noodles. Also rich, but impossible not to love. For my main course, I had the buttery Lobster Roll (they have a creamy one too). This roll is by far the closest thing to the rolls I have eaten on my trips to the Northeast. We sat outside, great vibes for a Saturday lunch in the city. It was 4th of July weekend. Our waitress was very busy but still did a great job attending to us. After eating the $32.95 lobster, I was still hungry. I was given a good amount of brussel sprouts, which was an up charge, so the Brussel sprouts helped to fill me up. I wasn't wowed by the lobster roll, but it was good. However, I probably would not order the lobster roll again given the small amount of lobster I received for the price. The brussel sprouts were very good. I say on their patio, which was nice. From the reviews, prices, and menu, I was expecting more of a quiet, upscale dinner but that wasn't how we felt. This time, Carl ruined all of this and I won't be coming back. To start things off, in the middle of ordering, he literally walked away. Me and my wife both looked at each other, super confused. Carl ended up bringing us needed silverware for half of our order and at this moment, I asked him "Did you put our order in?" and he said "Yes". I told him "Carl, we weren't done". I don't know if this man is on drugs or what. Mind you, throughout the night, he kept skipping us and servicing 3 other tables that came after us. For my taste, slightly too creamy/rich. However, the buttered & fried bread that the roll came in was delicious!! My wife's Connecticut style lobster roll was a bit of a disappointment as the bread roll was smaller and not as crispy as the classic. I've been to this smack shack location 3 times, first with coworkers, then I brought my parents, and recently, my wife and I brought 2 family members who were visiting from out of the country. The first two experiences were great. My 3rd experience was not. 1) We had made reservations at 6pm and we were brought up the stairs. I assumed the hostess was taking us upstairs because there was no seating outside or on the first floor, but there was plenty of seating both outside and on the first floor for at least half an hour. The past two times I've visited, I was given a choice of where my group wanted to sit. This time, I was not. Hostesses should always provide guests with the option where to sit if plenty of seating is available. 2) We ordered two 2-lb lobsters and a couple of other dishes. Our guests had never eaten lobster before, and I expected the lobsters to come out on separate dishes in the usual steamed presentation of the pieces laid out in the shape of the lobster. However, our waiter had made an executive decision without even asking us by bringing out both lobsters in a plastic bag / boil and pouring them both out into a single round tray. Thankfully, the waiter was kind enough to take it back and have the food re-plated, but this added another 20+ minutes to the hour we had already been waiting for our food. Waiters should always confirm with customers on deviations from the norm. 3) This was the last straw. We ordered the Brussels sprouts as one of our sides. My wife took a few bites and then we noticed that they had nuts in them. She is allergic! There was no indication on the menu that there would be nuts in the Brussels sprouts, and this is the first time we've had Brussels sprouts with nuts in them so we didn't bother to notify the waiter (we order them frequently at other establishments as well). Needless to say, we did not sleep well at all after this dinner. Restaurants should always list common allergy ingredients on the menu or waiters should ask guests of allergies. 4) Two weeks ago, I emailed this location with this exact same message with the hope that the establishment would take accountability for our horrible experience. My email was essentially ignored, which is why I am posting this review. Despite my experience, I paid the full bill including a 20% additional tip, which came out to be around $300.
