I went to Smack Shack with some friends who were visiting out of town. I was pretty excited for some seafood! I ordered the fish and chips with spicy cornbread. The spicy cornbread was pretty good, if you like jalapeños and cornbread, you'll love it and it comes with a great honey butter. The fish and chips was good too. Overall I enjoyed the food and we had a table near the open doors so we got the best of both worlds with indoor and outdoor seating. Our service was pretty slow though which was frustrating because it wasn't very busy. I'd go back and try some other food and maybe the happy hour! read more

This place is so good!! I went with a friend for drinks and dinner. We were able to find a spot at the bar without a wait on a Friday night around 6-7 which was great. Service was fast and efficient and we got some draft beers and waters right away. As far as the food goes, we split some oysters and both types of the lobster roll. The oysters were good and while I enjoyed both lobster rolls, the Connecticut style was incredible. Best lobster roll I've ever had by far! Absolutely cannot wait to go back ASAP - also would be a great option for out of town visitors (although they may question why you're taking them to a seafood/lobster place in Minnesota if they're from the coast ). YUM! I have been meaning to try this place forever and it just took one spontaneous stop in the North loop for evening appetizers. And wow all I have to say is I need to come back for a full meal. We ordered the mussels and they were perfection. Great portion for the price too. We also got the shrimp bruschetta and it was amazing. After being relocated to Minneapolis a couple years ago this was the first restaurant I ate at and it was amazing the first time and every time since solid 10/10 experience. They put so much effort into being the top notch restaurant in the neighborhood and it shows with the quality of the experience you receive. Just Go! There's not a bad seat in the house the patio is perfect for downtown people watching, inside seating is dangerous you'll order the whole menu from the delicious smells coming from the seafood pots and you can't go wrong with the bar for a fun happy hour experience. Chicken and waffles was good, not great. I'd try other things on the menu. The Lobster Lucy was different, definitely a MN original type of burger. Was searching for seafood when I found this place! It was a bit challenging finding parking because this is located in downtown. There was a lot of street parking, though all taken. We luckily found a street parking a block away, and walked to the restaurant. We did not make reservations, but were seated right away. Though we were told it'd take at least 20mins before we could be serviced, it was quicker than that. Staff was attentive, knowledgeable, and professional. This was top of my list for summer of 2021 bucket list eats- ended up going the same day as crafting the list because just couldn't wait to chow down! Delicious seafood with LARGE servings of meat! The Cheech cocktail was spirit-forward and fruity- exactly how I like them! I had been meaning to enjoy a meal at Smack Shack for many months before I finally made it happen on a summer Saturday. We were looking to enjoy the gorgeous weather, and their open air dining room was perfect! We opted for cocktails and small plates which was a blessing as we got to try a few staples!! I had a lovely mint julep, and also tried and loved the cucumber mint! Our waiter was also incredibly attentive and helpful. We ultimately settled on oysters, peel and eat shrimp, and lobster poutine which was a great sampler! The oysters were solid, and the sauces they come with were unique and enjoyable! Definitely stepped it up from cocktail sauce. The lobster poutine was something that I was really excited about, and the gravy exceeded expectations! I will warn, though, this is an incredibly rich dish. It may be more suited to a fall day than the weather we are currently having, but it is always a treat! Finally, I most loved the cold peel and eat shrimp! They were seasoned perfectly, and cooked very well so the texture was great. I would be tempted to eat an order for dinner myself in the future-- So yummy! Service and ambiance were good-- The restaurant was very busy but also much larger than I realized from the street. Maine-like Lobster in downtown Minneapolis? Yep! We tried a number of lobster entries and appetizers and they were all great. The Lobster Pontine was a excellent way to start any meal... Cajun fries covered with a cheesy gravy topped by a bunch of sweet, tasty lobster. The fries had a little bit of a kick to them, and they were really rich (all the cheese, butter and lobster had something to do with that), but were so good. The same was true about the Lobster Mac & Cheese, a big pile of lobster on top of creamy cheesy elbow noodles. Also rich, but impossible not to love. For my main course, I had the buttery Lobster Roll (they have a creamy one too). This roll is by far the closest thing to the rolls I have eaten on my trips to the Northeast. Such a fun time at the Smack Shack! I got the lobster boil and it was sooo delicious. It came with a whole 1.5 pound lobster, corn, sausage, potatoes, a dram of butter, and a side of broth from cooking the meat for dipping. Everything was perfectly seasoned, and the lobster was tender. The North Loop location was a great place to sit on the patio and enjoy the weather and my meal. It almost felt like I was by the ocean with my fresh catch! Our server was attentive and even helped me crack open a lobster claw- much appreciated because that is hard work! Went with a friend for restaurant week - restaurant was about 1/4 full. It took about 15 minutes once seated for a server to come over and the service was incredibly slow after that. Almost painful at times how long we were waiting between courses or just at the beginning waiting to order a drink. We ended up ordering all courses at once to attempt to make the wait better - that being said, my friend wanted another drink and never got the chance to ask because the waiter never came back to check in until we were done with dessert. The food was amazing - highly recommend getting the lobster guacamole or lobster Mac and cheese for appetizers - you seem to get the most bang for your buck here. For an entree I had the jambalaya and it was to die for. Key lime pie for dessert was also great. Serving size for everything during restaurant week is still very generous. For a drink I had the hummingbird and it was pretty AND strong! Would recommend. We sat outside, great vibes for a Saturday lunch in the city. It was 4th of July weekend. Our waitress was very busy but still did a great job attending to us. I have another odd compliment: the playlist here is excellent. 2000s-2010s r&b and hip hop hits while eating lobster was so fun. It was a very unexpected perk. It's fine dining if your idea of good is Applebees or Red Lobster OR you are feeding picky young children OR you're one of the neighborhood's young professional bros who thinks a wasteful pile of lobster is a super impressive date that negates the need to listen to your date so you can talk endlessly about yourself. We were all over the menu and ordered several items. Every dish was delicious and packed with flavor. All the tables were socially-distanced, and everyone was wearing a mask. It was great to learn of the restaurant's steps to keep employees and guests safe during this time. Takeout: The customer service was great when placing an order over the phone. My order was ready quickly, and they even gave me instructions on reheating it if I didn't finish it all at once. Their takeout process is simple, easy, and safe. Cooking with Smack Shack: We participated in the Jambalaya cooking class. The process was easy. You just had to order the kit of ingredients online and pick them up on a specific day during a certain time. Tuning into the live cooking demonstration was fun, and I would definitely recommend it as a great date night idea! The only thing I disliked was the price. You could literally just go out and buy all of the ingredients for a fraction of the cost. It would even be more cost-effective to order the dishes already cooked from the restaurant. I visited the Smack Shack in the North Loop on Washington yesterday. I had the Connecticut style lobster roll and the Brussel sprouts with hot honey, pistachios, parmesan, and a bacon vinaigrette dressing. I was extremely hungry. After eating the $32.95 lobster, I was still hungry. I was given a good amount of brussel sprouts, which was an up charge, so the Brussel sprouts helped to fill me up. I wasn't wowed by the lobster roll, but it was good. However, I probably would not order the lobster roll again given the small amount of lobster I received for the price. The brussel sprouts were very good. I say on their patio, which was nice. I would recommend going there during their happy hour which I think is from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Some of the deals seem to be worth it. read more

The vibe of the restaurant was not good. It's trying to be a bar, upscale restaurant, and a club at the same time. The bar is hectic, crowded, and music is blaring. It spills over into the restaurant some so it makes the dining area very loud and hard to hear the people at my table. From the reviews, prices, and menu, I was expecting more of a quiet, upscale dinner but that wasn't how we felt. My wife's Connecticut style lobster roll was a bit of a disappointment as the bread roll was smaller and not as crispy as the classic. Also, while the lobster was in bigger chunks, it was more tough and I could tell that it wasn't as fresh as some other lobster rolls such as Mason's. The vibe in the bar gets kinda of bro-ey if you go on the weekends. However, the dinning area and patio can be quite pleasant. This place will ruin you on lobster rolls. I had a lobster roll in Boston and was desperately disappointed because the ones I'd had at Smack Shack in the Midwest were better. The griddled milk bread is what really does it for me. The crispy, toasted texture of the bread makes a great vehicle for the subtly dressed fresh lobster. Unpopular opinion: The lobster Mac and Cheese is overrated.
