I've been to this smack shack location 3 times, first with coworkers, then I brought my parents, and recently, my wife and I brought 2 family members who were visiting from out of the country. The first two experiences were great. My 3rd experience was not. 1) We had made reservations at 6pm and we were brought up the stairs. I assumed the hostess was taking us upstairs because there was no seating outside or on the first floor, but there was plenty of seating both outside and on the first floor for at least half an hour. The past two times I've visited, I was given a choice of where my group wanted to sit. This time, I was not. Hostesses should always provide guests with the option where to sit if plenty of seating is available. 2) We ordered two 2-lb lobsters and a couple of other dishes. Our guests had never eaten lobster before, and I expected the lobsters to come out on separate dishes in the usual steamed presentation of the pieces laid out in the shape of the lobster. However, our waiter had made an executive decision without even asking us by bringing out both lobsters in a plastic bag / boil and pouring them both out into a single round tray. Thankfully, the waiter was kind enough to take it back and have the food re-plated, but this added another 20+ minutes to the hour we had already been waiting for our food. Waiters should always confirm with customers on deviations from the norm. 3) This was the last straw. We ordered the Brussels sprouts as one of our sides. My wife took a few bites and then we noticed that they had nuts in them. She is allergic! There was no indication on the menu that there would be nuts in the Brussels sprouts, and this is the first time we've had Brussels sprouts with nuts in them so we didn't bother to notify the waiter (we order them frequently at other establishments as well). Needless to say, we did not sleep well at all after this dinner. Restaurants should always list common allergy ingredients on the menu or waiters should ask guests of allergies. 4) Two weeks ago, I emailed this location with this exact same message with the hope that the establishment would take accountability for our horrible experience. My email was essentially ignored, which is why I am posting this review. Despite my experience, I paid the full bill including a 20% additional tip, which came out to be around $300. Our recent experience definitely was not worth $300 for 4 people. I hope this message finds its way to the manager. read more

Where do I start: this is the 2nd visit I have made to smack shack since I am visiting from Texas. Staff is amazing! They are welcoming and friendly. They are patient in answering all my questions. Angie in the bar area was on it. Thank you Angie! The food is delicioussssss!!! The warm lobster roll amazing!!! The best I have ever tried. It was Valentine's Day dinner, and I gotta go to where my girlfriend's second heart belongs; somewhere with crab legs. Doing my research to pick the perfect place with a good non-shellfish selection (because I'm allergic, and yes I know I'm missing out), and I found Smack Shack. For the apps, we got a caesar salad and buffalo wings. The caesar salad was a good portion, enough for 2 to share. The buffalo wings tasted like your average buffalo wings, it hits the spot. For the main, I went with the 16oz Ribeye steak in lemon bleu blanc sauce, medium rare. My sides: asparagus and collard greens with bacon. My girlfriend got crab legs, sausage, shrimp, corn, toast, with a side of cajun fries. The ribeye steak was so damn good! Arguably one of the top steaks (especially ribeye) I had. Juicy and moist. Not too chewy, and the fat melts a bit in your mouth. The lemon bleu blanc sauce was a great additional subtle flavor; it made me forgot all about their hot sauce I wanted to try. My girlfriend said her crab legs were also probably somewhere along one of the best she had. She explained how the quality was better than many places she had tried. The sides were a pretty good add. The asparagus was flavored and had a good bite to them. The collard greens and bacon was fatty flavored goodness. The fries? You can't go wrong with fries. Overall, we were stuffed! Smack Shack was recommended to us by our Uber driver after a Minnesota Wild game. He labeled it a "must try" as we were only in town for the weekend, and we trusted him enough to see for ourselves. We headed over on a Saturday just after they opened at 11am. We were seated in the area to the left of the host station, which is where a large bar wall was located. The area was fun and had many TVs, perfect for viewing some Saturday morning college basketball. I ordered the Lobster Mac & Cheese (smaller portion) while my boyfriend ordered the Smack Shack original (lobster roll). With one bite of the buttery lobster I was mentally transported back to Maine. I wasn't expecting to visit a seafood joint on my trip to Minnesota, but the meal was absolutely delicious and I was so glad our Uber driver recommended it. The local hot sauce was a great touch as well. The service the entire morning was also phenomenal. This is a nice twist to seafood restaurant that's around the cities. It has a 'southern' style of food selections on the menu. This includes collard greens, cornbread and cajun boilings, making this a unique taste to what Minnesotans aren't normally use to. They are known for their lobster rolls. I tried one based off the reviews/recommendations. Never had one before this. The original roll has chilled lobster salad and I think that threw me off. I'm not use to cold lobster. It wasn't what I was expecting and I unfortunately, wasn't too impressed. There are some warmed lobster rolls which I would like to try next time. The lobster mac was delicious! The cheese was perfect and creamy in texture. I hate to criticize the mac but I didn't really see the point in adding the lobster. The cheese is what made this mac amazing. I didn't even taste the lobster. The lobster bisque was another delicious, creamy, melt-in-your-mouth dish. Definitely the best bisque I've had. My partner loved the jambalaya. Smack Shack came across in many google searches for downtown/north loop. It did not disappoint! The smack mule for starters was delicious, not too weak or watered down at all. The lobster roll, Connecticut style was to die for! My sister enjoyed the cold lobster roll, and her fiancé demolished the jambalaya - it was just the right amount of spicy, and a big portion too. CARL TURNED ME OFF. I visit Minneapolis from time to time, from Los Angeles. The first time I came here, I loved it. Halibut was amazing. Complimentary sauces amazing. This time, Carl ruined all of this and I won't be coming back. To start things off, in the middle of ordering, he literally walked away. Me and my wife both looked at each other, super confused. Carl ended up bringing us needed silverware for half of our order and at this moment, I asked him "Did you put our order in?" and he said "Yes". I told him "Carl, we weren't done". I don't know if this man is on drugs or what. Mind you, throughout the night, he kept skipping us and servicing 3 other tables that came after us. I spoke with him, asking him if we were overwhelming him (when I knew we weren't). He said exhaled and said we were angels. It's the other tables, but it only got worse throughout the night. We ordered almost $200 worth of food and it will never happened at this restaurant. I really looked forward to this place during my flight to Minneapolis. First time drinking this drink on tap. Tasted amazing! Strong drink without the harsh alcohol taste! This place was great. My wife and I were on vacation in Minneapolis and we wanted a place away from the main area of downtown to eat and thanks to good old Yelp we chose the Smack Shack. It was beyond worth it! First of all, the area around the restaurant is wonderful. It is lively, people are having fun and the atmosphere is just that. As for the Smack Shack, you instantly smell delicious seafood as you walk in the door. So many great menu options are available. We had a lobster roll along with chicken and lobster Mac and cheese. I will always advise the lobster Mac and cheese. It is amazing. Some drinks on top of all that made it a really good night out on the town. YUM! I don't know why I've been sleeping on this great casual seafood spot in NoLo for so long! Their seafood is always fresh and the atmosphere is relaxing and fun! I can always depend on Smack Shack for a great lobster roll and good times. I've tried 4 of their different style lobster rolls- both the Connecticut style and Original lobster roll. The warm Connecticut style is my favorite. You get huge chunks of warm, buttery, lemony lobster with chives and lettuce on a split top bun. The orginal style with the creaminess and tarragon and cucumber just masks the taste of the lobster, in my opinion. The rotated a weekly special style lobster rolls I've tried were a California lobster roll and Cajun lobster roll. I don't remember exactly what was in those, but don't try to be fancy and just go with one of the two main stays on their menu. Now, if you love seafood like me, GET THE TOWER(S)!!! I tried the Shack Tower for the first time recently and I am BLOWN AWAY! You get oysters on the half shell, mussels, shrimp, and ceviche. All were so flavorful and fresh! One of my best meals when I visited Minnesota. The lobster was so fresh and sweet. I could taste that they were just flown in from Maine haha! Recently I leaned they have rotating lobster roll speical. I did the California Lobster Roll & man I wish it was a regular feature on their menu. It was loaded with lobster, smoked corn, chili lime aioli, avocado, and topped with cilantro in a grilled Milk Bread bun. This was fantastic & now I think I will continue to try out their different rolls of the week! We also got the lobster guac, which I personally found a bit on the saltier side. Get the Connecticut lobster roll! Don't order anything else. Look at those succulent hunks of lobster! Soaked in warm butter, with a squeeze of lemon, in a lightly griddled roll. Actually, there's too much to actually fit IN the roll, so it's more like it ON the roll. The hot and crispy Cajun fries are the perfect accompaniment. So worth $25. The crab cakes are pretty awful. It's two mushy bread crumb pucks with barely a shred of crab. Possibly no crab at all. Definitely the worst "crab" cakes I've ever had. The lobster mac and cheese is ok. Regular elbow pasta in a light cheese sauce. There's no lobster taste in the pasta or sauce, just some lobster placed on top. Just stick with the lobster rolls, and go somewhere else if you're still hungry! read more

The shrimp bruschetta was amazing! Cooked to perfection and I loved how they don't use small shrimps like other restaurants. The lobster rolls were succulent and juicy. Flew out here from the Yay (SF Bay area) for a quick weekend business trip, had dinner plans so we wanted something light. Yelped Seafood, and lo and behold the Smack Shack popped up and had some great reviews. And I know, you Minnesotans are not wrong. And yes, they did not disappoint. Rather on the contrary, my partner and I were beyond pleased with our first impression all the way to the last. My partner ordered the wedge salad adding on some shrimp, and boy did it look amazing. J, ordered a salad with crab, and boy it was great! We sat at the bar, and bartender was on point and definitely knew how to run the bar. She didn't miss a beat, if you will. Here in the Bay we definitely have a lot of great restaurants, if not some of the best restaurants in the world. It was really nice to experience that great level of food along with fantastic customer service. Which we are starting to lose a little out here. The set up and decor was also fantastic. I wanted to try Smack Shack for a really long time and finally got a chance! We were craving New England Clam Chowder and some lobsters, and this place did not disappoint. We started out with NE Clam Chowder, Lobster Bisque, and Lobster Poutine. I've eaten clam chowder countless time in Boston and this place delivered the flavor from the East Coast. It was nice to see oyster crackers with my clam chowder (very essential). The lobster bisque was such a disappointment. My lobster bisque was lack of seafoody-creaminess and instead it was overseasoned which made it unbearable to finish. Entrees: Connecticut Lobster Roll, Smack Shack Orginal Lobster Roll, and Lobster Mac & Cheese. Connecticut Lobster Roll was 5 stars,: lobster cooked perfectly tossed with butter sauce. So good that I wanted more. Smack Shack Lobster Roll was an interesting twist as the roll filled with lobster salad. It was delicious and it can be pretty messy. Lobster Mac & Cheese where the mac & cheese were the stars of the dish. It was creamy, delicious, and well-seasoned. I still could not figure out which kind of cheese they use to make it so yummy. We have been coming to smack shack for years now. After 8+ years it still holds as our #1 brunch spot, favorite bar, and favorite staff. We come here mostly during the day time or brunch hours. Every once in awhile early evening for a bite or late night for some cocktails. We love the patio in the summer, they let dogs and love dogs to join. Probably the best in Minneapolis. When it's colder out we belly up at the bar or sit in The bar area which is first come first serve and seems to work if you go at the right times. Bryce, Taylor, Angela - more to mention but the entire staff is so awesome, friendly, and keeps track of their regulars. When a bar does this in a bigger city it gives you all the feels. Our favorites: Chicken and waffles - any time of day. It's phenomenal and they don't skimp out on the portion size. The waffle is sweet and amazing alone but then the crisp on the chicken and the amounts they give you beat everything. King crab quiche - a special when they have it. Don't pass it up! Blue crab po boy - not on the menu anymore but when we have asked to order it they still are able to make it and it holds to be my favorite thing on the menu (besides the wings) by far. Melts in your mouth with a nice aioli and a good spice of jalapeño. The wings - get them over and over again. Hidden gem here. The sauce is the perfect buffalo but with a brown sugar acidic taste as well + the blue cheese is probably the greatest ever. I could drink it in a pint glass. Bloody bar - $13 but jumbo shrimp, bacon, beef sticks...the whole 9 yards. You can load your cup up like a champion and make this your meal. The fries - soemthing about the fries and the seasoning are worth ordering alone some times. The chowder - comparable to cape cod chowder. It's the real deal. The lobster Mac - how could I forget. If you don't like lobster get the bacon Mac. Order a large and thank yourself later. The lobster roll - no brainer!! Drinks are great, lots of beer on tap, tons of liquor to choose from, and specialty cocktails galore. Cucumber mint cocktail Margaritas (any kind or special on the menu) Bloodys It's all good, cave and eat here. If it's too pricy for you go across the river to 1029 and eat at their sister location for the same foods but cheaper. read more

Made a reservation for dinner with my son upon a suggestion from a native MN friend. So glad we stopped in! We sat outside on their patio and shared a peel and eat shrimp appetizer (warm). Tasty, fresh shrimp and great cocktail on the side. I could not leave the place without experiencing their signature Smack Shack lobster roll (cold). It has huge pieces of lobster and the right mix of celery and mayo on that toasy roll. Recently returned to Smack Shack after not having been there for years. Got the lobster Cobb salad (requested a side of drawn butter for the lobster itself), and friends got the lobster guacamole. Food was superb. Lobster seemed fresh and tasty. Cobb salad seemed bit small for the price (was still a little hungry) but was a really good salad - maybe would order something else on the side. Guac was really tasty as well. Kiddo had kids menu mac and cheese, which was decent with generous portion size. Did not end up getting milk or the cookie that went with the meal, and our server did not seem particularly great, but I feel the less than superb service this one time was not on par with my prior experiences there. Alright, looks like I'll be the first one to openly say this. Smack Shack is overrated. I'll admit, their lobster and really only that is good. Everything else is quite null. It's a very overly hyped place on social media and truly is overpriced and overrated. The inside is quite gorgeous at this particular location. If you are quite social this would be an outstanding place to hang out. I'd probably eat before hand. The service is excellent, waitress was so nice and the hostess was prompt in helping us to our chairs. That's always quite refreshing. The food... I'm not going to do the write up I normally would. Just because it's not right for me to. The lobster was truly excellent, super savory and buttery. Literally the stuff melts in your mouth. Everything surrounding that is... pretty basic. I'm almost certain that the buns used on the "sandwich" were from Costco and the chips too. The fries I could make from frozen cub fries and they would be better. I won't be coming back. I have only eaten here once before but thought I remember it tasting pretty good, we went today and ordered 2 Lobster rolls, the connecticut style (hot) and original lobster roll (cold). Cut them in half so we could taste each others and we both were VERY disappointed. I think the cold maybe tasted a little better but they both were very bland and unfavorable, like eating rubber. $25.95/each The toasted bread was the only thing that really tasted ok. Went at 2:00 and had a very hard time finding a parking spot, went around the block at least 5 times, I really wish we would not have found a parking spot as we would have gone elsewhere and ate a better meal.
