We came in on a Wednesday evening. We asked about the menu and were told at the counter that it was Wing Wednesday and the wings were $1 each. Well how could we not add those onto our order. We ordered a Burnt Ends platter with mac and cheese, and corn nuggets, a Brisket Platter with corn nuggets and beans. We also ordered a large mac for my son and a side of lean brisket. For the wings we ordered the Cajun ranch. Our food started coming out in about 5 minutes. Firstly, I was shocked at the wings. I love wings, but they aren't something I usually order often as I find them just OK. There are only a couple places that I visit specifically for wings. Well, let me tell you, I would make a visit back just for these wings. OMG, the Cajun ranch was simply amazing, really addictive. They were my favorite item. We devoured them. The burnt ends were very good. I appreciate they are big chunks of brisket with no pull pork filler. The flavor was amazing as well and the bits of fat melted in our mouth. The corn nuggets were fine and the Mac N Cheese was quite tasty. We enjoyed the meal so much, were were trying to figure out somewhere for a family lunch the next Sunday and came back again. This time my sister, son and I brought my dad. We of course ordered more wings and burnt ends and brisket with lots of Mac N Cheese. The food really is something special. The wings are absolutely wonderful and the burnt ends are a hit. This is definitely one of my new favorite restaurants and will always be on my list of visits to enjoy when I come back to Jax.

We arrived with a party of 17 (and lots of kiddos!) 10 minutes before closing and the hostess called the GM and got permission for us to go ahead and eat. On top of that, the service, food and atmosphere was absolutely phenomenal!! Everyone was so kind and the Server recommend the best options from the menu and my family from out of town was blown away at the flavor and beautiful presentation of their meals. As we left, even the kitchen staff went out of their way to say thanks for coming in and have a great night. 10/10 recommend!!

The service was steady and I came in around 5ish so it didn't pick up til after I arrived. The staff were nice and polite. It was quiet but had several tables occupied. The chicken was moist and dipped with the spicy bbq enhanced the flavor. All sides were seasoned well especially the green beans and collard greens. Cornbread was good, just note it does have jalapeños. I would say the only feedback was the brisket appeared to be more lean than moist. When we ordered the moist brisket a few weeks ago, it was a lot more marbled, looser and fattier than what we received in this order which was less marbled with leaner cuts. So it appears the staff may had gave the lean than the moist cut... Other than that, everything was good, but perhaps the staff could have additional guidance in brisket cut differences.

Now, I'm no connoisseur, I am not from an elite BBQ region and I know that Jacksonville is not a BBQ go to area. But that said, I tried a few places in the region and 4 Rivers is the only spot I'd repeat visit. Service is friendly and prompt, and they were helpful with putting me on their best items. The brisket was moist, tender and flavorful. The ribs? To die for. Best I've had in Florida. The burnt ends are a combination of brisket and pork, which compliments one another nicely. I loved the beans! The corn was the only thing I found lacking, tasted too much like canned corn for my taste. Their nice seating area is big and welcoming and they have numerous sauces for you. It made an already delicious appetizer even better. For our entrée, we shared the Texas "Trinity" (the "give me all the meats" option), which comes with ribs, sausage, and brisket. The ribs were unbelievable--fall-off-the-bone tender, juicy, and perfectly seasoned. The sausage comes in two varieties: regular and cheddar jalapeño. The cheddar jalapeño has a nice kick without being overpowering and was absolutely worth trying. On this visit, we upgraded our sides to two fresh salads, but during our first visit we had the baked beans and coleslaw, and they were both fantastic. My family, the six of us, most who live very close, my wife and I, visiting from CA, made our usual visit to Woodpecker's during an "around Florida" vacation. We visited many spots of my youth between Jax & St. Petersburg while dining at old favorites and several BBQ joints along the way. Without a doubt, Woodpecker's Backyard Barbecue was the best by far. The last time we were there, the turkey stole a show as it was the best turkey I have ever eaten in a barbecue restaurant. This time the brisket was the number one meat, equalling or bypassing any I have had anywhere, even in the many Texas joints we have tried. It was right up there with Franklin's and other top Texas offerings. All of their meats were extremely good. Their sides are very interesting as well as good tasting utilizing a lot of dátil pepper to flavor several and add a little bite of spice. My only wish is that it was closer than the 2547 miles away that it is. If you are anywhere near woodpecker's backyard, barbecue, go. Go. Go. You will not regret it.
