This place was a solid 4 stars for me. As soon as you enter you feel a southern vibe. I am saying that because I lived in South Carolina for 3 years and that's what this reminded me of. Good BBQ and the Southern hospitality... not saying this is a Southern restaurant. COVID: The staff was wearing masks, and skipping a table between guests. Everyone was at a very safe distance and we felt very comfortable. FOOD: Ordered the Dave's Double and the two meats we picked were the Texas Sausage and the Buffalo ribs. That's the best sausage I have had... it was gone within a minute or two. The Buffalo ribs were good but felt like the meat was a bit drier and didn't have the falling off the bone kind of tenderness to it.... maybe that's just how Buffalo ribs are. The sauce on it was perfect though. I removed a star for the sides: 1) corn bread that was cold( but extremely delicious) ... the butter chunks inside the bread, when you split it, was hard and visible. 2) the baked beans ... they were TOO sweet! Almost felt like dessert. Because of which we skipped dessert since we got out sugar fill. The clear standout was the Bison ribs - fantastic sauce, tender meat, and plenty of it. The sausage was good, as expected, and the brisket was solid, though I can't quite pinpoint what's missing in the taste. Sides were a hit - coleslaw with the perfect creaminess, jalapeño hush puppies could use a tad more kick, and the cornbread was just right. We tried to visit the location in Estes after a hike in RMNP but unfortunately the staff was quite rude and the wait was long so we headed for Lyons instead. This location has so much character, from the outdoor patio to the newspaper menus. The staff was very friendly and the FOOD. WOW. It was really tough to choose what to order.... we had (2) BBQ Salads, one heart attack meal, a pulled brisket sandwich, and the bread pudding. First I will say the service was amazing, the staff were very friendly and we got our food fairly quickly. However, the food and drinks were subpar. The "southern" style sweet tea was not sweet at all, it tasted like unsweet tea with half a sugar packet in it. Both the side and entree mac n cheese were watery. Well, today was the day. We had an opportunity to be in that neck of the woods and NOT going hiking. We were fortunate enough to have Janine as our server and I highly recommend that you ask for a seat in her section when you go. Her service was excellent as well as her menu recommendations. I selected the Hoggin Combo. Just as it sounds itis a great selection of a lot of their menu except for the ribs. On one plate you get Sliders, skins, wings, tenders, rings and deep-fried pickles. Man-o-Man it was over the top. Each item prepared perfectly. My wife ordered the ribs and si I shared 1/2 my pate as she did hers. Let me tell you there is enough food on every plate that you could share with someone and still have way more food than you need. Notice I did not say want, oh buddy you want this trust me. Their beer menu is also extensive and yes they will sample so you can order just the right one. I dare you to save room for dessert. We had the bread pudding. They have restaurants in Estes Park, Lyons, Longmont, Denver, and Centennial, CO. I have only been to Lyons so that means I have 4 to go! We chose to sit out on the patio since the weather was so nice out. Our server was fast and friendly. I ordered the pulled pork platter that came with 2 sides-Mac & cheese and baked beans as well as a piece of cornbread. Food came out pretty quickly and the table had 4 different bbq flavor Options to chose from. Food wasn't served "hot" maybe more like lukewarm to be honest. As soon as we got our food we started getting bees flying in our area so we moved to a further table where the flies got us. We were craving some BBQ so we stopped here on our way through Boulder. We ordered the Not So Teeny Wahine for our family, and I ordered the Fish and Chips for myself. Not So Teeny Wahine On the menu it says it serves 2-4; it definitely serves 4 people. It comes with a variety of meats and sides, more than enough for a family meal. The sides were pretty typical, though we found the Mac and Cheese and Green Beans (had some bacon mixed in) to be exceptional. I'd definitely try their sauces as well, they go well with the meats. Fish and Chips These are worth the price for sure. It comes with 3 pieces of fish, and they're all mostly fish with a very crispy layer on the outside. It comes with coleslaw and fries. Only complaint was that the fries were a bit too salty. Service Good service and reasonable wait time. Our Wahine was supposed to have 4 sides, though they forgot our coleslaw. We let our waiter know, and he immediately went to get it for us with no fuss. If anyone knows anything about BBQ is that the meat is always ready to go because it's smoked prior so I have no clue why it took so long. The Brisket was served cold and DRY 0 out of 5 star! The chicken was moist but served COLD, all the sides fries were served cold and barely edible, the ribs were decent but served cold as well! My daughters pork sandwich was served room temp! Unfortunately this was the saltiest low quality pork ribs I've ever remember having. I bought a full rack was was one disappointed patron. Fatty and Salty!! The greens where even worse, with so much salt I literally could not eat them. I don't know if there was an accident in the kitchen with the salt shaker, but I don't how this could be intentional. The BBQ sauces were pretty good if you can get past the mouthful of fatty salt, each bite you take. I really have no idea how this place could rate as high as it does. The hostess was pleasant, the sever lacked a personality. I suppose there are only a few restaurants in Lyons so may that contributes to the Yelp rating. And if you grew up on salty and fatty fast food, maybe you think this low quality is normal.
