Super hot outside and it was warm in here but luckily very few people so not crazy stuffy. Staff was super friendly. I love BBQ and I have been known to go to Smokin' Mo's a few times when I want ribs. But I have got to be honest about this place. The meat is not smoked, which takes away from the flavor. The sides are VERY small (though mostly tasty), and the prices are ridiculous. If I am going to pay over $40 for my husband and I to eat out, I expect a nice atmosphere. This place is just dumpy inside and reminds me of a fast food restaurant as far as ambiance goes. read more

We were in town for a show at the College last night, and the place we had previously picked out to try via yelp was closed! What do to? Well we walked around and spotted this little place and thought why not? We were very happy we did! Not only did they have a great decor, friendly staff as well as friendly patrons, but the food was great as was the unexpected surprise of excellent live music (classic rock, our favorite). We split a pulled pork sandwich with fries, slaw on the sandwich as it should be. YUM! Great pulled pork. We also split the BBQ Sampler, which included more pulled pork, chicken, ribs, beans, and slaw. All around yum! Pretty hard to find fault here. Very glad we tried this place out. read more

An informal self service (kinda) BBQ foods. Had pulled pork and saint Luis ribs with a delicious corn muffin, with honey cinnamon butter, and sides of beans and slaw. All was pretty darn good. Self service Soda fountain and some flavored teas. Atmosphere was steel top tables and booths and family sized tables. Has patio dining area. Very difficult parking as all is street side and metered. This was the first time I had ever eaten at Smokin Moe's. I had the Chipotle Lime Chicken Tacos. They were much larger than I expected. I was a little worried that the price was too high for just 2 tacos, but it was the perfect amount of food. It's extra for avocado or cheese, but it's well worth it. The sauce is delicious!! I should have asked for less cabbage, it's a bit overpowering. My only complaint is that without the sauce the chicken is kinda dry. They are a bbq place. They should know how to make juicy chicken. I think the coolest thing about this place has to be that you can get it delivered so you don't have to deal with parking downtown!! read more

Smokin Mo's is always a good solid place to eat in downtown Chico. I have probably eaten there like 6 times, and never had a bad meal. Brisket, tri-tip, ribs are all excellent, as are their like 4-5 house made BBQ sauces. Fries, coleslaw, and beans are all good, but none really stands out. Burgers and chicken are also very good. Service has always been friendly, and generally they get food out in a timely manner. Love the bbq decor and the restaurant is always very clean. Overall, everything is good but nothing is a "spectacular". Would personally like to see a few more traditional sides like greens or fried okra. Very responsive owner. If you want some good food around downtown, and your bored of burgers, burritos and sub sandwiches, this is a good place to check out. A little bit on the higher end of pricing but the food is well worth it. I usually get a pulled port sandwich with a side of mashed potatoes, and they are delicious! The only complaint I have which is why they lost a star is the fact that their sides are just way too small, they are the size that any other restaurant would pass out as samples. Come on for the price, it won't hurt to give the customers a little bit more on the side. All aside to me service is what matters and their servers and cashiers are very friendly and sociable, which is a plus! I'll be back! read more

It smelled delicious when we first walked in so I knew it'd be good and it was. My daughter who is a Chico student and I both got the BBQ Beef sandwich and they were delicious. I chose the cornbread muffin for my side and loved it, too. It was soft and tasty and came with a little cinnamon butter. She got the cole slaw and loved it. The atmosphere is cool. I'm a Southerner, by birth and was raised in a catfish house, so I know my way around a decent plate of Q. Smokin' Moes is decent for Califorina BBQ. The sauces were pretty good, but the Carolina could have used more vinegar. The sides were passing (no collards, hush puppies or banana pudding) though. Add more sides, drop the prices a tad and put in a soda cooler with some authentic Southern sodas, (RC, Cheerwine, ETC) and sweet tea and other hard to find Southern delicacies (real hot sauce like Crystal or McIlhennys') and you'd really have something! read more

I HAD to update my review and talk about their coleslaw. I cannot express just how much I hate coleslaw. I don't stick my nose up easily to food, and when coleslaw came with my order on my most recent visit to Smokin' Mo's, I told myself that I had to try a little bit of it. (Being wasteful is not cool.) And low and behold, I have found a coleslaw that doesn't make me gag! This stuff is seriously perfect - not overly sweet like KFC, or store-bought items. Smokin' Mo's coleslaw is just sweet enough to take the edge off the cabbage, while still allowing you to believe that you're eating greens. I am definitely impressed. read more

My boyfriend and I went here and shared a sampler plate (1/2 chicken, ribs, pulled pork, baked beans, and corn muffins). The meat literally fell off the bone, it was amazing and juicy. The corn muffins came with a cinnamon honey butter that was surprisingly very good as well. The atmosphere is like an indoor picnic with random nick nacks on the walls. MY FAVORITE BBQ SPOT IN CHICO This place is one of Chico's gems. The owner is all about BBQ and formulated his special BBQ sauces after a cross-country tour of BBQ spots from North Carolina to Texas to California. Meaty meat! I'm not a big meat eater, but on occasion I have some type of meat deficiency that requires a trip to Mo's where I consume a half slab of ribs with sides and some garlic fries! My husband gets the tri-tip sandwich and is allowed to have some of MY garlic fries. He loves meat and asks for extra on his sandwich (maybe slightly under portioned). This place is damn good Q. It might not get 5 stars in texas or the south, but in Chico, it's as good as it gets. The price is high for chico, but the norm for good Q. I still love their BBQ chopped chicken salad, but service can be a real struggle around lunch time which is the primary time we eat there. The staff seems to frequently get overwhelmed by the high school student lunch rush, which coincides with many area employees lunch. We've had our tickets get lost, and we end up sitting there waiting while everyone who came after us ate and left. No one will notice unless you approach the counter and ask. The first time they were very apologetic about the mishap- which couldn't be hidden since they had so much trouble finding our order they had to come back and ask what we'd ordered in the first place. Today we had them switch it to a "to-go" order after waiting for 45 minutes and watching around 40 people, most of them high school students eating chicken strips and fries arrive after, get their food, and eat and leave. We wait another 10 minutes and then one of the staff comes out and tells me they had to remake my salad because it had already been tossed in dressing and they put it on the side on to-go orders. She sounded kind of annoyed at having to remake the food. While I appreciate the interest in making sure my food is good quality, if I tell you I'm going to be late back to work don't choose to re-do my order making me even later returning to work! I would have been happier returning on time with a wilted salad, and it would have saved you time and wasted food. But here is the rub- I'm pretty sure this doesn't tell the whole story of what happened and why they remade my salad. I'm pretty sure in this case they gave our food to another table. Another couple showed up about 10 minutes after we ordered, ordered the same thing as we did, and had their food almost immediately. I suspect it was our order delivered to their table- which caused a ripple effect where the tickets didn't match the number on the wooden pig they have you leave on your table until your order arrives. Once the numbers didn't match, I'm sure the order sat in the back getting cold. I believe this to be the case not just because of how quickly the 2nd couple got their food order which was identical to ours, but also because the food we received in our to-go box was already COMPLETELY cold. My husband's burger and fries were room temp- not at all what you would expect from his order being processed after all those rounds of fries to the high school students. You'd think his would be fresh out of the fryer- so we are sure it sat in the back for a long time. The salad I get usually has warmed chicken. If it did sit with warm chicken on a fully dressed salad for 30 minutes or so, of course the lettuce would be significantly wilted and they'd have to remake it. So ultimately, I wish they'd just apologized for the mishap, rather than making it seem like it was our fault for switching our order to a "to-go" order. We're not a couple that requests a lot of accommodation, I wouldn't have asked for a refund for the hassle- but to approach me sounding grumpy after I was inconvenienced makes me hesitant to go back- at least during busy times. The food is good though, so do go- just don't go during high traffic times or when you have a deadline to return somewhere. read more

Really annoying experience. I got a couple of pulled porks to go and they brought them out on plates so I asked them to box it up. Took them 20 minutes to box up the food. I literally watched it sit on the counter. They weren't very busy at first either. I usually love the food but it wasn't the best this time either. Disappointed. read more

I love ribs. And I love how these are done. I prefer my sauce on the side. They make my rack "dry rub". Staff is friendly. The atmosphere is casual. I enjoy eating outside, however the flies are very bad. But, if you don't mind swatting at them to keep them at bay, the little patio they have in the back is a nice enough area. I came in at 5pm and the restaurant was full, even though it was full my order was taken very quickly. The cashier was SUPER pleasant. The restaurant was very clean as was the BBQ sauce station. I ordered 5 half roasted chickens and an order of fries. When I got home the fries were still HOT crispy and fluffy on the inside, they had just the right amount of salt on them to. The chicken too was hot, moist and perfectly seasoned. The chicken fell apart oh so easy and just melted in my mouth. To say I was pleased with my order would be an understatement. I would most definitely recommend this restaurant to all my friends and family because everyone should have the pleasure of enjoying this experience. If I could give them a hundred stars I would. This review is for the communication. We called at 11 shortly after "opening" to learn that they were actually closed to do COViD. I would recommend that the owners update the yelp and website (which we checked several times before calling) with information about their temporary closure. Supposedly they have a food truck but again idk where it is or the times or phone number. A little bit better communication would be helpful. Great location. Clean and entertaining with television to watch the game. The staff is awesome.....friendly with big smiles. Good variety of sauces and prices are good. Beans were the BEST and the potato salad close second. So why three stars.....the RIBS were cooked to perfection but the quality of the meat (fatty) was what ruined it for me. Love this place. We were in Chico taking a look at the school and ate at Mo's. I had the lunch plate which included 2 ribs and pulled pork. It was delicious and was perfect for my lunch and dinner as well. My son has decided to attend the college so I'm very happy to say, we will be back. This place is a Chico classic. If you went to Chico High, you know it's a lunchtime staple. Unfortunately, that's about the only time I was able to handle the heaviness of the food from Smokin' Mo's. I love it, don't get me wrong, but it's CRAZY hard on the GI tract. If the grease doesn't get ya, the heavy acid from the tomato base will. Definitely DO NOT recommend for heartburn sufferers (pregnant mommas, this means you, too). But! For youngins and drunk people, this place is bomb! Customer service is always great and the food really is quite tasty. I'm told the quality is good and there's really nothing bad to mention, other than the heaviness of it all. Great food but took a long time to get it. I was in Chico visiting a friend and we ate here. I love the differnt types of ribs. I guess the owner went around the BBQ belt and grabed the best of the best recipes. I feel like they still go to memphis if you order memphis style ribs. I'm a BBQ beef/brisket kinda guy, and the 3 times I've had it here it was excellent. The meat was melt in your mouth delicious, and the fixings were also very good. The one and only gripe I had is that 2 of the 3 times I got the sandwich the BBQ was just squirted on top of meat, which as a connoisseur of BBQ meats that's a no go. The 3rd time they correctly had the meat and sauce mixed together which made me believe they had a rookie in the kitchen before. Otherwise excellent BBQ place in busy downtown Chico. read more
