We used this for a fairly large work event. To say it was disappointing and a terrible value would be an understatement. There were two choices of sandwiches - chicken and brisket along with a bag of Costco chips. And that was it. They began by handing out dessert sized plates and then repeatedly barked out "one per person." The so called sandwiches contained a very thin layer of pulled meat with bbq sauce, both of which were cold and tasteless and haphazardly thrown on a slightly oversized Hawaiian roll (pretty sure they were from Aldi). My kindergartner could've made better. It's like they didn't even try. Did I mention the sides? Oops, I didn't. That's because there weren't any, unless you count the aforementioned Costco chips. There were a couple bottles of BBQ sauce available, which didn't help. Just cold, bland, tasteless disappointment. I recall better offerings in my lunchbox in school - made me miss mom's PB & J. Do better. I suspect prison food would be a step up from this. read more

Their catering for my birthday party was amazing. Really generous portions and excellent service. We got ribs, brisket and chicken and sides and all were off the charts. Their mac and cheese has a spice to it that's addictive. They set up a beautiful buffet with all service items and were friendly and helpful to guests and in clearing plates. Steve was extremely accommodating to us, from revising the invoice within hours when a change was needed, to understanding that we were going to be late to pick up our order. Steve, Terry, and Anita, should never be hired. Each one were unprofessional. If you do something wrong, own it. and, just because you refund money, doesn't mean you buy yourself out of a bad review. The person who takes the orders is nice,until there's a problem. The person who came as an attendant, was incompetent. you arrive 90 minutes late with food, Drop a tray of food in the driveway, And not know the specific instructions that were arranged when the order was placed. when you have an event that goes wrong, and no one is available because it's the weekend. And no one can talk to you about the problem, and then they all protect themselves and decide that the customer was the problem. And then try to say that it's because there were some training issues, and then try to double talk backwards as if the event wasn't set up properly, when you have it in writing exactly the way it was supposed to be. This was our first time ordering and it won't be our last. It was a family members Birthday party and were were trying to figure out what to order. I came across Steve's company website. I placed the order with 3 days advanced notice (there are items that need advance ordering) and oh boy was this food delicious! The entire family loved the fall off the bone ribs. Steve, if you see this message, I hope you will contact me directly. --------------------------- Summary: Smokin' Steve's does not fully disclose all fees and price increases until you are ready to put down a deposit. That's when they hit you with all these extra charges. They also expect you to put down a deposit when they cannot send an honest proposal. Transparency is an obstacle with this caterer. --------------------------- Working with DJ at Smokin' Steve's has been such a frustrating experience. I reached out to Smokin' Steve's July 2015 to request a quote for our wedding. They provided a quote for both the BBQ Buffet and the LIVE BBQ. Fast forward to January 2016. I called DJ to discuss the quote, so I can get a better idea of what is included. I mentioned that we will need help setting up the tables (including linens, napkins, and glassware) and cleanup after the event. We spent over half an hour on the phone, and DJ assured me that we will get 4 servers (already accounted for in the quote) on wedding day and that they can certainly help with all those things. My fiance and I went in for a tasting two days later. I emailed DJ the following day to let him know that we are ready to put down a deposit, and he informs me that the prices have increased. Additionally, he advised that we will need to pay for additional servers since we need setting up / cleaning up. Why was this information omitted from our previous conversations??? If prices had increased, why would you spend 30 minutes walking me through the quote line by line and advise at the end that the price listed is what we are expected to pay when you've increased everything at the start of 2016?? You wasted my time and your time by discussing a quote that is no longer valid, and now, you're also backtracking and telling me that I will need to pay for additional servers? If a business cannot even provide something as simple as a fair and accurate quote, then I cannot imagine how they would be able to survive on wedding day. I asked to talk to Steve directly, but DJ says he handles all questions and concerns. Seriously? I highly doubt if Steve knew that a customer would prefer to speak to him that he would refuse to. Otherwise, he is bound to let the office admin run his business to the ground. read more

I ordered the brisket, and it was soooo amazing. I liked that part of the order was a bit more cooked than others... satisfying everyone. I'm not a fan of BBQ sauce at all, but their BBQ sauce is spectacular! It's a bit sweet and so delicious. Candice couldn't figure out how to get our order done properly. Once they did ( and it was ONLY because they wanted full payment at that time and we explained they couldn't get full payment of an incomplete order). They overcharged on a lot and only fixed it when I pointed it out. DJ also added $800 in gratuity that was not agreed upon and refused to give it back. The day of the wedding they had 1 less person then they were supposed to. They were supposed to do clean up and left with out doing it or removing props that they used!! She cleaned up, packaged all leftover food and was present but discreet the entire time. The food was exceptional. Everyone had multiple servings. We've used Smokin Steve's a couple times now and both times were exceptional. Steve tries really hard to get you what you want and he's very easy to work with. The food is excellent, all of our guests loved the food and they are just very exceptional with customer service also. The first time we did the live BBQ for 90 people and it happened to rain that day. Steve and his team were able to change their plans right on the spot, finish the BBQ and bring the set up inside to serve our guests. They were such professionals, they knew what to do and just did it. They didn't come ask me for 100 things a 100 times. They just asked if it's okay to move inside and once I said okay their team got on it and moved everything inside and didn't interrupt any of my guests. I was impressed at the fluidity. Everyone loved the food so much and we got so many compliments on it. That is why we decided to go to them a second time. This time we just ordered catering for 70 people and they dropped it off on time. I noticed that one thing was off on the order. I had asked for coleslaw but they sent me onions instead. The deliverer DROVE ALL THE WAY BACK to Moorpark to get the correct side without me asking. It was a small box, not a big deal, and drove back without hesitation. I was blown away at the customer service. The food was delicious again, catered. I gave the deliverer an extra tip for the drive and thanked Steve for the amazing food. I went to one of Steve's classes on how to cook a brisket (smoke one) and it was just a joy! In the class he also taught us how to make bacon from scratch! It was a wonderful experience and I consider myself a significantly experienced bbq weekend Warrior and I still was able to learn so much more on smoking from his 4 hour class. My wife got me the cooking class and it was the best gift she's ever gotten for me. This place is horrible. Way too over priced, they are such a rip off. We paid over 800 dollars and the food was terrible. The meat, which was supposed to be tri tip, tasted like hot dogs and was way over cooked. The potatoes were so bland and the beans weren't even that good.
