Make sure you make a reservation. We tried to make a same day reservation for dinner, and they did not have any seats available until after 8PM. We sat outside on their patio. Although it's located on Main Street, the patio sits a few feet away from the sidewalk traffic, making it feel more private and intimate. Our server was attentive and provided great recommendations. We ordered the sherry glaze local mushroom appetizer, which was incredibly delicious. The butter bean puree was smooth, buttery, and a perfect combination with the mushroom. I could have licked the plate. The crab cakes were mouth-watering. My salmon dish was perfectly flaky. I will definitely be going back! One note: We did ask for suggestions on a bottle of wine. Prior to an off-Broadway production of "My Fair Lady," and by off-Broadway, I mean as close as Greenville is being "just outside Chicago," I felt compelled to bring Mrs. W. to a locally celebrated restaurant for dinner. Due to its excellent marketing, we chose Soby's. Soby's is centrally located for those who want to be in the center of downtown Greenville situated between the old Hot Dog King and the plaza in front of what was once a basement coffee shop and an old grinder factory. The last time Mrs. W. and I visited Soby's was when I received a promotion at work. I was later laid off from that job, but the hatchet shall be buried. I don't recall what Mrs. W. selected, but it was a mixed experience--her dinner was truly excellent. Mine was the consistency of premium cardboard. Seven years later, we figured we'd give it another shot. It was hopeful that the premium cardboard, er, meatloaf, was no longer on the menu or at least after more than half a decade, the restaurant had figured out that it was adding too much cardboard to its recipe. After locating a parking space in a city garage for the bargain "special event" price of $6, it was time to locate our restaurant destination. As Mrs. W. was smarter than I and agreed to be dropped off close to the restaurant, it was my task to climb the freckled hills of Greenville's sidewalks to reach Soby's. I arrived well-exercised, tired, and famished. Inside, Soby's appears to be the prior location of a manufacturing operation. It currently appears as a restaurant. The menu is varied and provides a decent variety of dishes you envision as being huge, but in reality, will be smaller. Mrs. W. picked fried chicken as she was curious if Soby's could defeat the celebrated Chick-fil-A and Popeye's chicken market. I felt adventurous mixing my meats with a pork-covered-pork meal of bacon-wrapped pork tenderloin. Prior to our main course, we ordered the food we eat before we eat in the form of fried green tomatoes. These three, delectable morsels were filling and delicious. However, there were three tomato slices and two of us so I felt it was necessary and only fair if we evenly divided them considering our equal statuses in our marriage. I enjoyed my singular tomato slice. The bacon-wrapped pork tenderloins were tasty cylinders of what could be considered Babe's cousins. While I ordered them "medium," they came out "kinda dry." The habanero butter sauce helped rehydrate the main course and provide the extra kick we needed once we found out "My Fair Lady" was going to be a 3-hour show. Mashed potatoes and broccolini--broccoli's fancy cousin--rounded out the meal. Our helpful waiter ardently attempted to entice us with one of Soby's desserts, but our time was short so we had to pass. I'd like to think it would have proven delicious. Been here a couple of times, in my personal opinion it's one of the best spots to eat in downtown Greenville. Food is out of this world, service is top notch as well. Last time I was in we had a party with us and it was fantastic. The only thing off about the atmosphere is the older floor manager being weird towards the female servers. read more

Came here for a date night on a Friday and there was no wait. The service was fantastic, Kyle was extremely knowledgeable about the menu and made great suggestions! My drink, butterfly & the bee, was fantastic. I love a floral gin cocktail so this hit the spot. The oyster pie was delightful. It's an appetizer but I got it as an entree and I didn't find myself needing more food, other than a dessert to split. I recently went here for a dinner meeting for work. The ambiance is very nice and cozy. Would be a wonderful place for a date night or meal with friends. Made a reservation and got there a few minutes early. We still had to wait 20 minutes past our reservation time, which was the wait they were giving walk ins. No apology or anything for the wait. Sat down and ordered drinks and an appetizer. When drinks arrived, we ordered entrees - still no appetizer. I was having a hard time deciding what I wanted and the waitress suggested one entree over another and somehow completed represented what it was - upon getting my food it was not what she described at all (but still was good food). Finally our entrees came and we still had not received our app. It was pimento cheese by the way, so not like it needed to be cooked or anything. Server came back when we had started eating and i asked if she had put the appetizer in. She literally said "Oh. No I didn't." And that was it. I have never in my life gotten that sort of response from a waitress who forgot to put our food in. After that she just stared at me and I said we were fine and didn't want it anymore. She said "Ok sorry. " This may not appear to be a rude encounter but no one at our table had experienced this type of treatment at a restaurant. We are so DISGUSTED at this year's Thanksgiving Buffet that we will not resist informing of what a DISAPPOINTING experience it was for us. And an awful EMBARASSMENT due to the extended family we brought along. 1. NO BREAD - Server could not even bring any when asked for. 2. NO GRAVY - UNBELIEVABLE. Server said we could just get the rib roast au jus. THAT'S RIDICULOUS PEOPLE! Honestly, what type of deficient restaurant would serve Thanksgiving Turkey WITHOUT GRAVY?? There is absolutely NO EXCUSE for this. NO GRAVY for either the Turkey or Mashed Potatoes???? Your Chef should be FIRED for this alone! 3. DRESSING - This was dry in sections which is ANOTHER IMPORTANT REASON TO HAVE GRAVY. 4. TURKEY - This was very dry, not juicy at all, could not find any moist pieces at all. WISH WE WOULD HAVE HAD GRAVY! 5. GREEN BEANS - We have never noticed green beans cooked this poorly. Looked limp, weak & small, almost liked cooked forever. 6. SERVING BINS - Most of the serving bins looked "picked-over." Never fresh-looking & full. Brussel Sprouts Salad was almost always empty. Obviously the staff did not give a damn about keeping the food supplied for your customers. My wife even went downstairs to see if anything might be better and; no such luck, very similar. (I imagine that you could say that: At least your food, presentation and attentiveness were consistent). In Summary, for our 3pm seating, we should have been afforded the same quality, attentiveness, responsiveness as the earlier groups. If everything was the same for them also, then I feel sorry for those earlier groups as well. We feel as though we were eating leftovers for this meal. The staff had no answers for missing gravy, missing bread, etc. Again, we regret having to send this message, but we are truly so damn disgusted about this experience, on Thanksgiving with our guests, that we will think long & hard about ever trying our luck at your Thanksgiving Buffet in the future. Our 3 guests had similar comments to the above since they also have been here with us at prior Thanksgiving meals and noticed the decline in quality this year. And really, really pissed-off of having to spend $200+ for this crap at what should have been one of the best holiday meals and restaurant in downtown Greenville! (IT WASN'T). read more

One of my favorite restaurants in Greenville. Love the ambience of the dining room. We always ask for a booth. For last minute meals, we also love grabbing a high top at the front window in the bar. Service is generally good in either area. But usually the bar service is friendlier. Their wedge salad is one of my favorite. Also, they are happy to customize your meal without the dreaded up charge. I love their filet mignon. BJ is a fan of the pork, shrimp and grits and crab cakes. The desserts are always amazing. Soby's was a great place to have a quick bite to eat for brunch. I felt misled when booking through OpenTable because it listed Soby's as the second best restaurant in Greenville. I've eaten at several places in Greenville and I can think of five places right away I would have ranked over Soby's. I ordered the shrimp and grits, which being about ten dollars more than everything else on the menu, I expected it to be fantastic. It was mediocre at best. There really wasn't much flavor. My wife ordered the frittata. Not great, not bad. The only value in the brunch menu were the $3 bloody mary's. Sure, it doesn't have the pizzazz of a loaded bloody, which they do serve, but it's the best bang for your buck here. We ordered one of the fully loaded bloody mary's to do a comparison and felt it was worth it to stick to a $3 bloody vs a $9 bloody with a strip of bacon and stuffed olive. read more

The restaurant itself has a very cool atmosphere - it felt like a blend between a rustic moose lodge and a wine bar. The food was good, but their wine list was amazing! Very extensive list of all types of wines. They also have craft cocktails and local craft beers. We split the calamari and the oyster pie for apps. The calamari was our favorite dish we had here. The oyster pie was also good, but a different type of dish than we typically order. For dinner we had the shrimp and grits and the bacon wrapped pork medallions. Both were very good. They have a large outside patio and a cool bar inside, we would certainly come back! read more

This was my first time in Soby's and we came here to celebrate a birthday. They have indoor and outdoor seating and their outdoor seating is very welcoming and love the cafe lights. They have valet parking which is great in downtown Greenville as parking can be a bit tricky when coming for dinner. Our waiter was awesome and told us about their huge selection of wines. We got peach mules and my sister had a delicious mocktail. Entrees were the short ribs, fried chicken with Mac and cheese, shrimp and grits, and steak with kale. We were suggested to add a crab cake to our entrees which we all did and it was tasty. The steak had a chimichurri sauce which enhanced the flavor of the perfectly cooked steak and the butternut squash purée went well with the saltiness of the steak, short ribs were tender and juice, Cole slaw creamy and crunchy, fried chicken perfectly fried, crispy on the outside tender on the inside but teh Mac and cheese was bland. We didn't order desert as we were very full but the waiter brought an ice cream sundae with a beautiful birthday note and an edible Happy birthday chocolate. It was an off night at Soby's last Saturday evening. I went there with a group of friends to celebrate a birthday and I was quite excited. I have reviewed Soby's before and I touted it as one of the best dining experiences that I've had in Greenville, but it was a bit different when I went this time. First, there were issues at the bar. I ordered a glass of cabernet and it took some time to get our drinks back. Eventually I received a Riesling, but I just kept it instead of returning it and waiting for what I ordered. Our waitress said there was a bar shift change and things got backed up, so I didn't worry too much. My boyfriend and I ordered the duck, but a few minutes later I was informed they were out of duck. This happens, so I instead ordered the crab cakes, which were previously phenomenal. White wine is better with fish anyway. They were night and day from the past time I had them... stodgy and fishy, served over lukewarm mashed potatoes. I talked them up to everyone who would listen, so I felt like I misrepresented them recommending to everyone. Their pastry chef just quit, so the inventive dessert options were no longer on the table. Our waitress was sweet but seemed overwhelmed and stressed. There was a little back and forth about who was paying for the table (the plan was for us to take the individual whose birthday it was out) but we made it clear that it wasn't him. She gave the entire 6 person check directly to him, which was pretty awkward. I'll go back to Soby's because it was so great previously, but it was a weird night for them. Happened by this fine establishment at the recommendation of a friend during move--in day/week at Clemson. Could not have made a better recommendation! The ambiance is rustic mercantile made contemporary. The service was top notch Tha ks to Donny, who made rather bold recommendations which lived up to and surpassed his top billing. The fried green tomatoes were tender and surprisingly sweet. The fried calamari was perhaps the freshest and most tender yet crispy I have had. Donny recommended the crab cakes, shrimp and grits and braised beef short ribs. So, my buddy and I had all three! Wow! Simply put the crab cakes were some of the meatless you will find in the restaurant setting. The short ribs. Braised over 8 hours, simply fell apart with the fork. We made dinner reservations based on my friend's suggestion. We arrived and were greeted by a very sweet hostess who seated us immediately. The restaurant has a really cool vibe and the outside patio looks like a great place to enjoy a meal. We opted to eat inside. We were greeted by a server who filled our water glasses and told us our server would be with us shortly. Within a few minutes, our waiter came over and took our drink orders. I opted for a local brew and my friend ordered a Moscow Mule. Our drinks arrived quickly. Her Moscow Mule was really good and I would definitely order one for myself on another visit. My friend ordered the swordfish special and was able to change the sides easily based on her dietary need which is always a plus in my book for a place that accommodates those kinds of changes. I ordered the shrimp and grits based on reviews. We also ordered a Caesar salad which they gladly split for us. The salad was delicious and I loved the crispy capers!! We were also given little biscuits which were amazingly good. I may have eaten more than one. Our food came out timely, just as we finished our salads. The shrimp and grits was by far the best I've ever had. The grits were so creamy! The tomato sauce added a great flavor to the whole dish. The shrimp were cooked perfectly. The country ham was a nice touch and the sausage was flavorful. The whole dish just tasted so good. My friend also enjoyed her swordfish. The vegetable sides were cooked perfectly as well. My family and I came here for my birthday from out of town. We sat outside, which was very relaxing and had views of downtown. The service was quick and the waiters were nice but we did notice a waiter frequenting the outdoor area visualizing customers, I'm guessing to determine how far along in the meal each person was for wait time. If you come here, I do recommend a reservation as well as this makes the process much faster, you can reserve on Open Table. We each ordered a drink, the old fashioned smoke on the horizon and down the runway. Down the rumway was delicious and sweet reminding me of a martini. Smoke on the horizon was a play on a margarita, however I wouldn't recommend this drink as the smoke added to the rim was very overpowering. Finally, for dinner we ordered three entrees to share. The crab cakes were delicious, with mostly limb crab and very little "filler." The fried chicken with hot honey was my favorite, but the Mac and cheese was lacking in flavor. I would not recommend the shrimp and grits unless you like New Orleans type shrimp and grits. The sauce was over powering and drowned the grits. All meals are served with cheddar biscuits prior to the meal. We tried ot the banana cream pie to top the evening off which was to die for. Overall, I would recommend this restaurant but for the price some of the dishes could use some more flavor. read more

This is one of the best restaurants I've been to this year. Located in what is apparently an old textile mill in the historic section of Greenville, SC. Soby's exudes a hip urban vibe and welcomes you with a homey warmth and subdued hubub that let's you know immediately that the clientele is content. We had a reservation and were seated quickly in a comfortable booth near the open kitchen. The staff is on their game and our server was on of the best I've ever seen. He knew the details of each dish and gave us excellent recommendations. The complimentary warm cheese biscuits were outstanding. All the dishes we tried (pork loin, grouper, she crab soup) were excellent. When the bus boy noticed i had not finished my soup he wanted to know why as the chef was going to interrogate him when he returned it to the kitchen; they are clearly concerned about customer satisfaction. All in all, a superb venue in a fun part of the historic downtown area. read more

We didn't have a reservation on a busy Saturday night, but the bar area was first come, first served, and we were lucky enough to grab two bar tables and push them together to five people around them. The expectation of service was low since it was packed and we just put five people at these bar tables and wanted to eat a full dinner. But wow the service was second to none. We had two girls that waited on us, and truly they could not have been better. They anticipated every need. They were attentive without being too much. Each course came out perfectly timed. The food was hot and delicious. Rounds of drinks were always quick. The cocktails were perfection. The open air environment was beautiful. Highly recommend. A few specifics from what our table ordered... the garlic cheese biscuits they bring out at the beginning are superb. The calamari was amazing. Lightly breaded and great sauce. The wedge salad was solid. Would order again. The crab cake was really good. Not Charleston level but good. The fried chicken was good, but it looked a bit better than it tasted.
