This location is where I had my very first art show ages ago before it became Smoke on the Water. SotW is well known in Greenville, South Carolina. It was always a favorite restaurant of mine so I wanted to take time to stop and have lunch with my two favorite ladies. The food was good as usual. I remember it being different but as time change so do the menus. We nibbled on corn bread before the entrees. I forgot to take pics somehow but I was just enjoying the quick and attentive service as well as the moment... being home and enjoying the sunshine on the patio. One note.... It must be a local staple because there were two youth baseball teams in there eating. That to me means good food and family friendly. That might make some people cringe, but to me, run with it! Now, the food was pretty good. I didn't get much for the smoke flavor but there was some. Their sauces are quite good and do a great job to enhance the food. The meat was tender and cooked properly. After our cycling trip on a greenway that cuts through town, we stopped at Smoke for lunch. I ordered the pulled pork with a side of beans & a side of a potato cake. The waitress gave us a tour of their 5 bbq sauces. I tried them all & settled on the Kansas City sauce. The pulled pork was decent but average. The beans were decent but average. This place was a great spot to have dinner. It seemed like they may have been a little understaffed or maybe our server was new, but the food was delicious. I ordered the pulled pork with chili and mixed greens. My friends ordered the beef brisket and the catfish. We were all very happy with the food. Eat here, if BBQ meat is your thing. The smoke meat is among the best, I've eaten. We arrived about 11:45 on a Saturday and there was a short wait for patio seating for 2. There were 2 big events in town, a University of SC vs Clemson baseball game at Flour Field and the SEC Women's Basketball Tournament at Bon Secours Arena, so a wait wasn't surprising. We ordered the Double Play (2 meats you select) and 2 sides. We selected the pulled pork and beef brisket ($2 bucks extra for the beef). For sides, I ordered the delicious fried okra and my Plus 1, ordered the Collard Greens. We shared the meats but not the sides. There was plenty of meat for the 2 of us. The Smoke Snout Stout(say that 3 times times fast) and that was perfect with the food order; smooth. Jessica, our Server, was friendly, efficient and materialized when we needed her-PERFECT. We've had to drive through Greenville a few times recently, and this is absolutely my favorite place in Greenville to stop for food. And it's got a beautiful outdoor patio which is dog friendly. Right in downtown, near Falls Park on the Reedy so you can walk off all this delicious food I'm about to tell you about. South Carolina bbq is already next level and Smoke on the Water does it justice. Get the Smoke n' jackets ($12) to start, crispy potato skins filled with your choice of protein. Then the pulled pork sandwich ($9.50) with a side (I got fried okra) to finish it off, chef's kiss. And OMG the bbq sauce, they give you house made sampler of the 4 staple SC sauces. I was visiting Greenville and decided to stop by Smoke On the Water for dinner. I joined their waitlist online and once I arrived, I checked in at the host stand. She said there would be about a 30 min wait. Once a table was ready we were seated outside. Our waiter came over and asked our drink orders. We asked for water and a cocktail menu, but when he brought out the waters he forgot the menu. In the meantime we ordered our appetizers and food. The server took forever to return to our table throughout our dining experience. The chicken deviled eggs had no chicken on them and were very basic (regular deviled eggs). The beef bites were tender but would've been better with sauce. Our waiter never brought out any bbq sauce or A1. We asked for bbq sauce along with hot sauce and he never brought it out. The fried catfish was not done and I'm pretty sure was not catfish but another type of fish. We had to send the fish back and just settled for wings. Arrived and the waitress looked at us and said "you're right on time!" Nobody made a reservation so we were super confused. The table was set so thinking we stole someone's space. We asked but she said she had no idea. We were carrying cupcakes so maybe that's why they thought that? She asked why we had then and we told her it was both of our birthdays. Would have been nice for her to offer to at least bring us a plate for them or chill them or something. Overall she was super distracted and scattered the whole time. She did bring us cornbread with butter to start. Mmmm. Warm and moist and perfect. Great amount too. Started with their $4 mimosas. They have them with cranberry and orange. Very weak and small. Got two rounds (don't know why- maybe birthday feels) and the second round was a little better. Wouldn't recommend tho. I ordered the greens salad with salmon. Thought it was delicious. Great salmon- cooked perfectly. The mix of toppings in the salad was delicious too. Nuts, good cheese and berries. A bit expensive but a delight. Wish I would have taken a photo. Two people got mac and cheese and it was horrid. Tasteless. Like butter noodles. One of us sent it back and the other just didn't eat it. The server was super sweet about that. Bottom line: This is the second time I've been to Smoke on the Water for lunch and they did not disappoint. We were seated by Bobby and served by Stella, who was a joy to be around. The table has a 4-pack of house-made sauces. South Carolina Mustard, Memphis (sweet, dark), North Carolina vinegar base, a fourth sauce (I don't remember!) and we also requested the habanero sauce, which was not all that spicy. I ordered a half-slab of ribs with green beans and a loaded potato cake. The ribs were not saucy, which I like. They were cooked perfectly. I did try all of the sauces with the ribs and decided that the SC mustard-based sauce was my favorite. The green beans were great as well. At the table there were several other items: brisket sandwich, lots more ribs, mac-n-cheese, salad, etc. This place is a must-try for those in the area who like the tasty meats. read more

Recently, my wife and I took a day trip to Greenville SC for a basketball tournament and wanted to get to see a bit of the town before hand so made plans to have lunch and walk around a bit downtown. I quickly found Smoke on the Water on Yelp a few days before and we were excited to give it a try! Located barely off Main St, Smoke on the Water was the perfect spot for us. There was lots of public parking around and the area around definitely has a nice small southern downtown feel to it. Plenty of shops, restaurants, coffee, wine bars, and even the bridge and waterfall area within what seemed like 100 yards at most. At least during lunch time, Smoke on the Water was very nice, while also being relaxed and casual. Our waiter was great and let us know about the specials and gave us a bit of a rundown of the menu, including that they make all of their BBQ sauces in house! After hearing the specials I did not even need to look at the menu, I knew I would be getting the Frogmore Stew immediately! One of my favorite dishes, and you dont see it too often in restaurants, especially so far from the ocean. My wife opted for the Brisket Bomb Sandwich, a brisket sandwich with caramelized onions, homemade BBQ sauce, and cheese. After ordering we were brought some cornbread as an appetizer. It was good, nothing amazing about it, but nice to get something other than your standard bread. Our food came quickly and it was GREAT. The Frogmore Stew was piping hot and covered in old bay. The sausage was a bit spicy and the shrimp was very large and sweet. I would certainly order again if it was a special. I had a bite of the Brisket Bomb as well. It was HUGE, so you do not have to worry about going hungry. Really good, but I will say the brisket was a bit overcooked, worked out fine on a sandwich but maybe would have not been the best if I ordered just the brisket as my entree. It needs copious amounts of sauce to get you back to even, which I guess is why the restaurant's slogan is "a saucy southern tavern." The beef brisket had a flavorful exterior herb/spices outside, but the beef inside again was a bit tough and flat. I love this restaurant. The food is always good as well as the service. Sometimes there is a wait time so I recommend getting reservations ahead of time. We had to wait an additional 15 minutes past our reservation time. Once seated we looked over the menu with something for everyone. Our food server was Kylie and she was very friendly and professional. I ordered the Full Rack of Ribs with two sides. My diner partner had the Grilled Barbecue Chicken with two sides. I have never been let down by their ribs in the past and tonight was no exception. Okay, I have had BBQ everywhere from Texas, KC, NC and my own. This place was a nice place, the fried green tomatos were good and so were the peel and eat shrimp. Those are like 4+. The BBQ I had was a combo of ribs and the pulled pork, both were dry as hell and I couldn't really finish what I had. I was pretty bummed that this was great, the sauces were a nice touch but overall this isn't premium BBQ. I wouldn't order any of those again. The apps were great and the staff were super friendly, but for me at least this was 2+ BBQ. I know with my smoker at home I make much better with way more flavor and texture. All were savory and held up well against the house-made sauces. But the star here was Smoke's brisket. Fall apart in your mouth goodness that you can't help but shove into some sauce and eat with your fingers. Flavors burst with a one-two punch of smoke and salt-char. Felt cute and added the night's dessert special: peach "oh-my-gawd" cobbler. Served piping hot with a creamy scoop of vanilla ice cream. Tastes don't get much Southern than this. Washed it all down with a local lager that offset the 'cue like an outdoor picnic on a Sunday afternoon. The juice did not taste like the pork juice it was so watery and bland. The brisket was extremely dry, overcooked and cold. BBQ sauce couldn't save either of these dishes. To also note, the drink was so poorly made, it tasted like they used the most bottom shelf gin and mixed in the wrong flavors.. Our server name was Anna Claire and she made the experience there so enjoyable. I enjoyed everything I had that night. We came here after touring a few places for their happy hour, and caught the back end of this one last night. I had a drink, we ordered pimiento cheese as an appetizer- and it was truly a special dish! Well executed, beautifully plated. Little things, like fried lardons of country ham with a hint of orange to mute the saltiness. I am from the packaging and label industry- and I implore the owners to think about selling this as a retail offering. People would knock down walls to get more of this in their lives! For dinner I had pork shoulder with two sides- one was the loaded potato cake and the other was the collard greens. They offer five different sauces...you cannot go wrong but we all agreed the habanero and their mustard sauces were the two best. I also ordered a side of Brunswick stew. This is one of the most heartiest ones I've ever run into. I put a little of the habanero in there for some extra kick. That alone could have been the meal- but I must tell you how happy we were with the food. We all shared a couple bites of the bananas foster. Non-traditional, they had a pillowy texture of dough around the banana compote, and the vanilla ice cream against the warm component was nice. Good way to end our meal. I have to tell you, very busy here last night but Chrissie our server/bartender did an amazing job. She was multitasking and working other groups and still made sure we were all happy, with drinks, and walked out completely and utterly full. Top level service, I tip my imaginary cap to her and the rest of the team here for a meal that was super memorable. Support small businesses.
