    Socal Fries. Presentation looks good but the taste and quality says otherwise.
    Mellanie A.

    I was deciding on lunch with the fam and my aunt recommended SoCal Wings. After browsing their menu, I was sold and placed a phone order. Our order consisted of four SoCal fries (which are basically buffalo fries from The Buffalo Spot with a drizzle of cheese and ranch), a 10-piece nugget, a small fry, a large order of mozzarella sticks, a Thai tea, and a few sides of sauces. To speak bluntly, the experience turned sour for me as soon as I started placing my phone order. While I was ordering sauces, I was rudely cut off by the man working: "Yeah, yeah, anything else?" I felt like I was being rushed off the phone, even after mentioning it was my first time ordering and kindly asking questions about their sauces. The customer service here just overall gave me the ick. Anyways, onto the food. I was super excited for my SoCal fries. They have a variety of sauces to choose from, and I opted for the spicy BBQ. On first impression I was surprised with the generous portions. I ordered a small Socal fries that looked more like a medium. As soon as I dug into my meal, I was met with immediate disappointment; the popcorn chicken on my SoCal fries was extremely stale. It tasted as if they served us three-day-old fried chicken that had been left sitting out. My siblings and mom also agreed the chicken was super hard. I ended up just eating some of the fries and threw the rest away. Before tossing it, I tried drenching the fries in their Cajun sauce (which is over $1 per sauce, btw), and even though I really wanted to like it, it had a weird aftertaste. On top of that, I just couldn't get past how hard the chicken was. The Thai tea, fries, and mozzarella sticks were just decent. I'd also like to mention that when I was placing my order over the phone, the man said my total was $67 and some change. When I paid in person, the total somehow jumped to $83.69. I assumed that included the Cajun sauces I ordered over the phone, but it actually didn't. I ended up paying a second transaction for the sauces, which was around $8. Had I possibly been charged for the side of attitude I was also served? To reiterate: the service here sucks. Overall, I won't be back as the quality doesn't match prices. You'd think that a joint that specializes in fried chicken and wings would serve fresh chicken but on the contrary, my chicken was inedible, gross, and clearly old. I love supporting local businesses, but I refuse to support a place that exhibits rude customer service and serves subpar frozen food that I could throw together at home. I don't recommend this spot as there are much better establishments in the area.

    Oh my goodness, where do I even begin? If I could give this restaurant a zero star rating, I would definitely do so. I was missing a fish fillet, my shrimp was cold, my chicken was burnt but still ice cold, and my fries were so burnt that they were almost black and orange. To top it all off, the restaurant had the audacity to place a balled-up napkin at the bottom of my fries, as if it were supposed to make them look full. This experience was absolutely appalling and I highly do not recommend this restaurant under any circumstances.

    Horrible!! Horrible!! Super Bowl, Sunday, Wings. My order was honey garlic Sriracha wings. They were naked!! Skimpy, skimpy sauce. Where's the sauce!! I have been a customer for the last four years and authored one of the first complementary reviews. Tremendously disappointed. More than half of my wings had almost no flavor. This was the only place I would get Wings. Did you change cooks??? Are you the new owner?? I now need to reconsider.

    No chicken too much ranch

    This place should be called skimpcal wings. They were graceful when they first opened but over the years they just been getting worse and worse. I ordered a mango madness socal fries no cheese and they drowned my order in ranch instead of the sauce for the chicken. Not only that they only gave me 5 little pieces of chicken with my fries. Tf am I paying 10$ for only fries. They need to stop giving out skimpy orders this is the 3rd it's happened.

    The food is delicious and fresh and my number one recommendation is their zucchini fries with ranch dressing and a side of their spicy sauce. The fish, shrimp and ZUCCHINI FRIES ARE THE BEST IN LONG BEACH!!!

    My niece said this place was better than wing stop so I had to try it yesterday. I ordered the buffalo and lemon pepper wings with fries. Everything was so good. The fries were seasoned so well. The music in the establishment was fire. The service was good and quick. They made sure to ask if you wanted dipping sauce. They even gave us a coupon. I will be back.

    The food was hot and fresh. I didn't go inside, my husband did. I highly recommend the jumbo shrimp.

    Lemon Pepper Wings

    Terrible. Weird smelling wings, I got the lemon pepper and the fried shrimp smelled really strong of fish. Won't be back.

The beef itself was a little chewy and in large pieces. I prefer the meat to be cut a little smaller and would like more lettuce and cucumber. I got a little taste of the spicy fried rice, which was really good. Some of us ordered Thai tea and didn't expect what we received, which was the tea with a Thai tea popsicle. What a treat! The Thai tea itself was pretty standard, but that popsicle was like the icing on a cake. The places, modern and clean. Staff is helpful and nice. We overtipped, to probably compensate for our last visit. However, the new kitchen manager has clearly changed the calamari (10/10 before, 3/10 now, to the point I felt embarrassed that I'd waxed poetic about it to my out of town guests, who didn't have more than a few pieces, and the ones I ate were just to kind of toe a line), and this is pedantic, but sesame buns for the sliders was a weird choice. So they're no longer on my shitlist, but I do think I'm going to need to try different go-tos. I'm almost scared to try the tuna tartare (my other go to) after the change in the calamari and sliders. I really so desperately urge management to bring back the former chef, because the current one really seems to expending the least effort possible. And for the record, there was a "specials" slip left on our table, with one of the items noted as "sold out." On a Monday, by 5p. Something is going wrong here. Meaning, we were spending time together and just moving through the interaction, like clothes in a spin cycle. But going here made our time together mean something more because we had arrived at a space that elevated our mood and spirits. So we were now feeling the suds and splashes of the movement not just in the monotony of the spin. As we entered, I felt like the place was a Chinese Market but indoors. I have never bene to China (I have yet to die so maybe one day my feet will have the chance to step the Great Wall) but I feel like their street vendors would have stands like the seating motif within the main room of this joint. The place was not packed but there was no space within the wooden booths for Conrad and I. I asked for options, and they showed me two different rooms. The first room was the Hao Pen You room which was heavilty yet beautifully decorated with varying red lanterns in the ceiling. Additionally, there was a paper dragon hanging in the ceiling, swimming in the air amidst the lanterns. The host ushered me in, and milaseconds after I felt a quick sense of awe. Not like the one I felt one I saw the Sisteen Chappel, but one that compelled me to snap quick photos of the aerial view. The host understood. She stopped her explanation to give me the space to feel my wow that was delivered in a red envelope. I eventually decided to sit in this room, so there is more detail that I can deliver, but before I do, I did request to see the other room of the house. So we crossed the room with the wooden booths and stepped into an immersive Tiki Bar that gave shipwreck vibes. Like the survivors of shipwreck took what they could from the boat's carcass, and made a great bar in the beach that glowed with the light of jellyfish and had seaweed on the ceiling as decoration that was not stale like mistletoe on a doorway. When Conrad and I sat in the Hao Pen You room, we learned that it was a quasi speak easy. According to history, in the 1800's it was common for Chinese immigrants to visit gambling and opium dens behind laundry rooms to find a space that they could call their own and escape discrimination. I am sure that dens of the past did not have the blazing style of the room I was sitting in, but I did appreciate learning about the history that inspired the room. Only because the pain of the past was reshaped to honor a culture in theatrical and edgy red. Plus, as one of my pictures show, the dragon's face and laser lit eyes, made it seem like a real creature born to this earth, not one simply reserved for myth and Game of Throne episodes. I appreciated the immersive trip to Chinese's lore and history. The reason why I did not give this place 5 stars, was the food. The food in general was (maybe tragically) basic. Conrad did not confirm this fact until we were outside the restaurant. I asked him why did he not share his feelings with our server when she asked? He explained why would he, she did not cook the food, and she could not do anything? And I am from the camp, where honesty matters but I guess it might only matter to me? He might be right what does honest feedback do for a server? Conrad might have been practicing "restaurant politeness" like keep the situation civil because if one becomes a demanding patron or eater then one breaks the social contract and becomes rude. Specifically, Conrad and I had the Vegan Dumplings, the pork buns, and rice wrapped in leaves. And even though we had different bites, and each one had their own flavor profile at the end I can only describe each bite as basic. That is my opinion, and I stand by it, as I should, as every one should. Perhaps this restaurant owns this identity. This might be a place that offers theatrical atmosphere, great drinks, vibes that make a Tuesday special, but their food might be the area that remains standard, and in the final score card the servers of the joint might be ok with that.

Each dish has incredible presentation. A must visit spot for dinner!

Our group of 3 walked in on a Friday afternoon and were seated immediately, despite the space being brimming with customers. The staff were welcoming and courteous. Interior is homey, had elements of street shop decor (peep the corrugated metal wall) that gave a rustic, industrial vibe :3 There were so many dishes we wanted to try, we opted to just split everything family-style. THAI ICED GREEN TEA: Just the right blend of tea and cream, and not too sweet! So rich and refreshing. FRESH OYSTERS THAI STREET STYLE: Spicy...! Has a kick. Went well with the fried onion topping. PAPAYA SALAD (Laos style): First time trying Laos style! The fermented seafood on top was FANTASTIC. Crisp brininess paired with the fresh papaya was beyond flavorful. I'm typically not a huge fan of crab but the salad dressing infused into the meat won me over. PAD KRA PROW (w/mock chicken): Standard stir-fried veggie/"meat" dish. We just wanted to try the mock chicken-- was a glutinous tofu-like protein, like the kind you get at Buddhist temple lunches. I mentioned to our waitress that it was my friend's birthday, and they graciously brought out a complimentary dish of ice cream with a candle to celebrate...! Very sweet gesture and the ice cream was delicious ;_;
