Food has always been amazing and most of the service. However, the manager has very evident anger issues and a hatred for women due to being repeatedly rejected by them throughout his life. He was rude to my group and so we laughed at him, because he is foolish. Then he got so mad a vein in his forehead was aggressively pulsating, at risk of bursting. He ran away and hid, then sent the waitress to do his bidding and deliver the message that he wouldn't let her serve us. Couldn't say it to our faces though, as we are a group of women and hes suffered enough trauma with women that he can't bear to talk to them for long. We looked for him to use words to address the situation, but this was above his capacity and he hid in the shadows of the store until we left. read more

So I've been here twice before and it wasn't terrible but it wasn't anything to write home about.. However, I had a friend in from out of town on Monday and she was craving Mexican cuisine. We chose Social for their great location, and lots of our friends love the place. But honestly, I have ZERO idea why anyone likes this place. (Other than the fact that last time I was here I wasn't ID'd for drinks.) We ordered the guacamole appetizer and sure the menu does say, "hand-mashed avocado, lime juice, tomato, cilantro" and that's it, but I guess we subconsciously expected onions, and some seasonings like salt, pepper?? It arrives with a large heap of radish on top?? Okay... pushing the radish aside we dive into the guac, it's loaded with (what tastes like) Tajin and there are literally full slices of avocado in the dip... no tomatoes or onions.. not really guacamole at all. It actually tasted like soap. We both ordered 3 different tacos for lunch.. I got one of each: Shrimp Verde, Chicken Tinga, and Tropical Veggie. The veggie I had first and it was actually quite good but the other two tacos were completely cold. Might I mention the entire restaurant was empty... what else is the kitchen doing? I some of the chicken taco it was alright. But when I tried the shrimp taco it was over, the shrimp was so cold and neglected it was tough.. I had none. Not to mention it was a shrimp taco and it only contained 2.5 pieces of shrimp. The waitress was nice enough to take the guac off our bill after we told her it tasted like soap... overall a horrible experience... I left hungry. read more

We stopped in on Sunday afternoon around 4:00. Steady business but not overly busy, was seated immediately. Sat down and looked over the menu for 5-7 minutes, had several service folk walk past but nobody acknowledged or spoke to us. So, several more minutes go by and now we start counting and 7 - SEVEN different servers walked past our table without anyone speaking to us - enough - I was ticked off so we got up and started to walk out and I said what had just happened to a server with no response at all, just dumbfounded. Then on the way out the door I told the greeter that seated us what had just happened and the only thing said was to the current guest he was taking back to seat them - "Don't worry that won't happen to you" - We will NEVER step back into this restaurant - food is good but certainly not worth this total disrespect. This has quickly become our favorite downtown lunch and dinner place to go to in town. We go so often we've become friends with a lot of the staff :) The staff behind the bar are AMAZING, so friendly and fun, and the food is always good. I love being able to order different tacos ala carte, and my favorite part of Social is that they let you make the tacos your own: for example, if you're trying to be health-conscious you can substitute a lettuce wrap for a corn or flour tortilla, which is delicious and light and refreshing, and my latest obsession is I found out I can order any taco on a bed of chopped lettuce, so it's like a delicious, light-weight protein-filled taco salad! If you like something but want to make it vegetarian, they can do that too: their nachos are AMAZING (plus a huge portion, you really get your money's worth), but have beef on them, but if you ask they'll substitute meat for mushrooms or their vegetarian plant based crumble! They offer specials/features that they change up often, so it keeps the menu nice and exciting, and their cocktails are delicious! read more

Came here for a drink after an afternoon of walking and shopping around the square with a friend. We were immediately seated at the bar, and the service was quick. All the flavor combined together made for a great lunch and the food was superb. Best of all, the service at Social Cantina is impeccable. Staff extremely friendly. I went to Social Cantina for opening night with a relatively large group. We had anticipated waiting longer than we did for table and were pleasantly surprised to be seated within a half hour of arriving. The margarita pitchers were a good deal for us and I loved my fried avocado taco. Our server was very friendly and apologetic about the wait but did a fantastic job with our table. I can't remember her name but we were at a large western-facing booth in the front half of the restaurant at around 9-10 pm. She definitely deserves a round of applause for maintaining high standards of service during what seemed to be a little chaos. My only criticism was that the margaritas could have more acidity. I had the pineapple, the spicy, and the social margaritas (I love margs, sue me) and all of them were very sweet but got better and more refreshing when I stole all my friend's limes and squeezed them into my own drink. Edit: I have a very upsetting opinion on this business now. I love and adore their food. It's amazing, while pricey it's worth it in my opinion or else I wouldn't go back. However, tonight at 6:45 I put my name on the waitlist for a party of 4, was told to expect to be sat at 7:30. Well that clearly went and passed. I was told at 7:50 with only 4 small parties ahead that'd I have at least another hour wait. I understand that it's difficult to gage wait times. But how do you mistakenly quote someone an hour off their entire wait? I've been a hostess for 2 years before and I've never done that in my life. I'm not the one to ever give a bad review, but that is really disrespectful of someone's time and value to their restaurant. If you're ever in need of a great restaurant on a bush night don't ever try here because you will most likely get incorrectly wait time quoted. Probably won't be back anytime soon. read more

This is the best restaurant in town, hands down. Bowls are fresh and flavorful. Tacos are so good it's hard to decide which ones to order. Tres Leches cake is not easy to do well, but they nail it. First off- this is a Mexican restaurant that doesn't give you chips and salsa. Ok fine- I don't expect free food anytime I go somewhere. BUT we ordered chips and queso and it came with literally probably about 6 chips. We had so much queso left we asked for more chips and THEY CHARGED US FOR MORE CHIPS. I wouldn't even be that bothered paying for extra chips had we been given enough the first time. There was only two of us, not like a big group trying to share chips. Not to mention she didn't warn us we would be charged for getting more. Then- our server wasn't very attentive, we were there probably 20 minutes before she even took our order. She came by right away but just to bring us water then disappeared for a while. She wasn't the one that brought us any of our food and we were both out of water for a while. All in all the food tasted really good but not any better than a normal Mexican place. This place is really modern and seems like they're trying to be boujie or hip. I was REALLY hoping this place would be good, since I have been craving Mexican and my co-workers recommended it, but it just... wasn't. Drinks: Ordered a margarita and my first sip was warm, even though it was on ice. Not exactly what you want on a hot day. Seriously, the bartenders were spending most of their time chatting with each other, so they could've at least shaken the marg before putting it in the glass. Once I left it to sit for a few minutes and kept stirring the ice it was better. Not a bad margarita for the price. Food: Okay, here is where it starts to go downhill... I ordered the bacon wrapped jalapeño rellenos and specifically asked that it not be topped with cilantro. Of course, it came out covered in cilantro. Since my waitress was nowhere to be seen, AND I was starving, I picked the cilantro off. I've worked in the industry and my waitress seemed a bit overwhelmed. The rellenos themselves were pretty good, but the bacon didn't seem to be cooked as well as it should be... so on to my tacos. I had one with ground beef, one with steak and chimichurri sauce, and one with shrimp. They bring them out on a flat metal platter with nothing to separate the tacos from each other. The juice from the steak made the tortillas on the other tacos soggy and I couldn't taste the chimichurri at all. The shrimp was over cooked, rubbery, and had a fishy taste to it. The ground beef one was probably the best, but I could've gotten the same thing at Taco Bell without spending $4 on one taco. This seems like a place better suited for the kiddos to have fun with tequila than what it seems to try to be, which is a foodie type Mexican street taco joint. I tend to revisit the same places while traveling if they have great food, but that was my one and only stop at Social Cantina. read more

Went with my friend on Thursday the week of opening. We had a 45 minute wait for 2 which we didn't mind as it's new and The Tap is perfect walking distance for a drink while you wait. The atmosphere is great. I really enjoyed the decor. Loud, due to how busy it was. The servers are super friendly. We ordered the chips and roasted tomato salsa as well as the chips and guacamole. Both dips were amazing and fresh. Downside was small portions and had to pay for both appetizers, unlike a traditional Mexican restaurant where they're typically free with your meal and guacamole is extra. I ordered the pineapple margarita. I really enjoyed it and felt it had a perfect amount of tequila and was easy to drink. For entree I ordered the Al Pastor and Carne Asada tacos. The Al Pastor was a little dry, save for the pineapple chunks. My friend and I both agreed that having the pineapple in smaller chunks throughout would be better to disperse the burst of flavor. The Carne Asada was great. I very much loved the pickled radish aspect, and I personally am not a radish fan. The only complaint I have about the tacos is how small they were for how much they are. I would personally charge maybe $2.50 for the size they are. Overall I really enjoyed the place. It's pricey, so I likely won't go very often, but it is a really neat establishment for Bloomington and a great chance to learn more about tequila! read more
