I didn't even know that this place existed until tonight. My mother was in town and I was looking around for a place I'd never been to take her to. Social 52 popped up on the list when I typed restaurants into my Google maps, and I figured we would give it a shot. With absolutely no pretense and having never even heard of the place, it really was a blind shot.
Right when I walked in the door, I immediately felt the very relaxed and comfortable atmosphere of the place. It was a ghost town when we arrived, and considering it was about 4:30 on a Monday, that's no surprise. The server told us to just find a spot that we felt comfortable and that she would be over with menus when we settled in. We picked a dining table close to the bar.
We both had drinks, my mother choosing the house red wine, and I had an Uberlin Sour Beer. Both were served in appropriate glasses and the beer was perfectly cool. The wine was also served in a carafe pour as opposed to free pour, which both I and my mother infinitely preffer.
We started the meal off with two appetizers; The fried green tomatoes and the Bacon beer bread. The fried tomatoes were a tiny bit on the firm side, but I think that had more to do with the tomatoes being very thickly cut than anything else. If they were half of the width with two more on the plate, it would have been perfect. The shrimp on top of the tomatoes were seasoned well, but slightly overcooked. The bacon bread was tasty, with a mild simple flavor, but was a little bit dry. Thankfully it came with some excellent garlic butter to go along with it.
For dinner, we had the Penne Carbonara and the Shrimp and Grits. The carbonara, which I ordered was very good. The pasta was cooked well, then chicken was tender and juicy, the bacon was present but scarce enough to not be overpowering, and the sauce was heavy, but not unexpectedly so. The shrimp and grits, that my mother had, we're also near perfection. The andouille sausage and Shrimp were cooked perfectly, and the grits were creamy and rich without being too loose. The sauce on the grits was spicy and cheesey, pretty much exactly what we were expecting. Both entrees were healthily portioned and very filling, we both left with leftovers.
The real surprise was the dessert, the Nutella cheesecake. It had a texture that I've never really experienced in a cheesecake, and it absolutely blew me away. It also wasn't incredibly over sweet, and even had a touch of saltiness to counter the Nutella in it.
I was very impressed with the atmosphere, drinks, food, and the details that they put into the experience. The new age industrial vibe was very welcoming and comfortable, and the left over containers were labeled and even dated, a detail I never even thought to expect from a restaurant. I will be returning to the place time and time again. read more
