Now, I don't dish out 2 star ratings lightly but the experience I had here was enough to merit it. As a longtime Richmond resident I will add for defense that Social is a great place to grab a drink but this has to do with food, brunch and sub-par service. Went to Social for brunch and I'm glad I had the majority of the day to burn because to say the service was slow would be an understatement: 15 minutes for a coffee (no refill which in a brunch world is like being stabbed in the face), 1 hour for the food (which came out glaringly incorrect), 10 minutes for the rest of the food. Nothing came out together, if you wanted something extra (like a bloody mary) get ready to wait because nothing was coming out in a timely manner. Not to mention my girlfriends meal came out missing half of the things it was supposed to come out with but at that point the service had been so bad we just said screw it and ate. On vacation, and chose social 52 for our first Richmond meal. We chose it based on the menu options. I was surprised by the great beer selection when we walked in, and many of the tap options were Virginia beers. The food was very good. I love mac and cheese and was very curious about the mac and cheetos. Unique combination. We had the jambalaya risotto and the steak medallions for dinner, both very good. We finished with the Nutella cheesecake..mmm. Sadly, they didn't have the French toast creme brûlée. With all the good food and beer, the best part of the whole meal was Abby's service! Very friendly, helpful, and attentive! We mentioned we were in town briefly on a road trip to Florida, and asked if she had any suggestions while we're in town...she came back with a written list of options that covered multiple interests (breweries, art, parks, sports)!!! Above and beyond expectations! We went here for the food, and were not disappointed, and we would go back for the service! read more

This place is HORRIBLE !! My friends and I decided to go to brunch for one of my friends bday so I suggested social 52.. the host sat us down it took a minute for the waiter to come but once he did we all asked for waters and a pitcher of the sunrise mimosa once again we waited forever for him to return. I want to put out there also it was a nice crowd there at the time but it was still unacceptable on the time but when we brought the waters to the table we had to wait on straws but as I'm waiting on the straw I noticed it's lipstick on my glass so once he came back with the pitcher and the straws I let him know about it (in a nice way) and he took it back then we tasted our mimosas and it was sooooooo watered down so we sent it back and just asked for the regular mimosa pitcher in the mist of that he brings me another glass of water and it has an bug in the glass by this time I was over it and just hoped that the mimosas was going to be good this time around. The waiter came back to the table with the second pitcher and we didn't like that one either watered down AGAIN because they put sooo much ice in it and IT WAS STUFF FLOATING IN IT also the pitcher was dirty so I let him know once again (in the nicest way ) so I told him we didn't want it anymore and showed him the stuff in the pitcher. He did not seem too apologetic about it but it was my friend bday so I let it go.. so we sat for a while again waiting on the food but once it came it didn't look so appealing at all but we went ahead and tried everything and asked for More syrup and some ketchup and butter the eggs didn't look like eggs they were burnt my bacon was half cooked and my waffle was cold and biscuit was too I put butter on it and it didn't ever melt AT ALL ( as you can see in the picture that I took it was still sitting there when I was about to get up and leave ) also me and another person ordered a Waffle mines came shortly but my friend had finished his food already and his waffle still didn't arrive. Once the waiter came back we asked about his waffle and I could tell by his face that he must've missed it on the order so he said it was coming and he was going to get it. By this point I couldn't take anymore and I told my friend to please speak with the manager but I wanted her to speak because I was already pissed... so once the manager came she explained that we were having an unpleasant experience here and she let him know about everything his response was "we stay crowded " once I heard that my blood pressure went up because I couldn't believe he was making excuses for this then he said that he was going to see what he could do so we waited and waited and waited and the waiter brings the waffle out and we look at him crazy and say we told him we didn't want it anymore also I ask him where is the manager because he never came back to us and we was waiting for a while to see " what it was that he was going to do " at this point I tell everyone that we should just go because this is ridiculous but finally he comes back and hands us a check and he walks off ( the manager name is Mikey by the way he's a total jerk) we sit there and try to look over the check to see what he did and it look like he took $4 of the whole check but we all needed separate checks so we sat and decided that we was going to just leave.. Once we did and was almost to the car (we didn't run )because we felt like this whole thing was just crazy the waiter caught up with us and say we didn't pay and I said yea we know because you guys don't care about your customers he went on and decided to say we ate the food but clearly from the picture I picked over my food and I'm definitely not the one to leave food on my plate but the food that they serve there is TRASH and the customer service there is as well.. because one of my friends has a big reasonable heart she went back to pay and the manager decided to call the cops on her and also talk down to her I have never experienced such Disgusting service and food in my life !! More of an average sports bar with a decent menu than anything resembling a true gastropub. Let's break the review down into two parts. Drinks: You can't bill an establishment as being a craft beer bar and 1. Offer only 4-5 beers on tap, 2. Have a "grocery store" bottle selection 3. Consistently be out of the more interesting options, and 4. Offer Bud Lite. Take a tip from the areas real craft beer bars and offer a legitimate beer list. There are a few solid beers on the list, but the prices are, on average, a dollar or two more than at any of the neighboring sports bars. Food: Wide selection of smaller plates, prepared fairly well, albeit without any cohesive theme overall. For example, a memorable dish was the fried green tomatoes. Dredged in (I assume) potato flour and served with shrimp and a remoulade caper sauce, it's one of the best versions we've tried in Richmond. The scallops on the other hand, while well prepared on their own, were completely ruined by the honey mustard sauce and eggplant. On top of that, the entree list is just too slim. On the whole, it's a menu that doesn't feel like a stretch for a good home cook. Overall, this place just doesn't qualify as a craft beer bar or gastropub. Offer a real craft beer menu beyond what's available at Kroger, tighten up the menu, and then you may be onto something. read more

I made a reservation here on Saturday for 10 for a birthday dinner. The service was great, the food was fabulous. Everyone was happy in our group. Between everyone we tried the duck thai dish, a royale burger, the cheetos mac and cheese, the grilled romaine salad (with chicken added!), and the grilled cheese with tomato soup and also a craft beer soup of the day. The tomatoe soup wasn't on the regular menu, but was on a special. Everyone loved their food, and the drinks were good too! The only downside was my boyfriend tried to order two beers, and they were out of them both. However once he picked his third beer, it was in stock and they gave it to him for free since they were out of the first two he tried to order. The place also is beautiful on the inside. First time here and I have to say this place was awesome. Nice chill music but not so loud you can't hear the person next to you. The waitress was soo honest. I asked about portions and taste and she let us know what not to get according to our likes and preferences. The bartender did too. Now the food... Best sweet Potatoe fries! We went with friends for drinks before dinner. My wife ordered a margarita and unbeknownst to her it came with Black lava salt on the rim. Upon delivering the drink to the table, the black salt dropped on her white jeans, ruining them. The waiter did not acknowledge this and ran away to the bathroom for ten minutes. We had to flag him down for club soda. We asked if they had stain remover and the waiter told us that there was "a Rite Aid two blocks down that you can go to". At the end of the evening, we still had to pay for the drink and received no acknowledgment that this happened. Very Disappointing. read more

Decent spot. The staff is pretty friendly, the drinks are good and the food it's not the run-of-the-mill. They could offer a better happy hour for food though. Currently they offer buy one get one half-off, on select appetizers. On my last visit we ordered for appetizers assuming that the deal would apply to all of them and giving us two full price appetizers and two half price appetizers. But this was not the case. We were informed that only one happy hour special was allowed per table which means that we paid full price for 3 / appetizers and only got one half off and it was the lowest priced item. Ok so I've written positive reviews of other places before but this time I wish there were more stars I could give. Social52 is simply amazing. I've had food all over the world and this stands up with the best places I've ever eaten. We went for the happy hour expecting to spend 30 minutes over one beer and bolt. Two hours later we tried five of their small plates as well as a couple extra beers. The happy hour is hard to beat. Craft beers for $2 off which made them $3 each for what I selected. But the real gem is the food. The smoked duck sliders were the perfect marriage of layered flavors. The chef really knows how to blend flavors that on their own are good but all together blend into an explosion of flavor in your mouth. Then we had a flat bread that was delicious. The honey Sriracha shrimp were simply amazing. We thought we were done as our belt line was expanding. But no!!!! We grabbed the grilled edamame made with hickory smoked salt, ponzu sauce and pop rocks. Yes pop rocks. Sure it sounds trendy and something of an after thought. Nope. They are amazing. The salty from the ponzu blends with the sweet and effervescent of the pop rocks to bring this dish to a bizarrely amazing level. I saved the best for last. Let me preface this with the fact that I absolutely hate grits. Have always hated them. My wife convinced me to order the shrimp and grits to share with her. Social52 has changed my view on grits. I threw caution to the wind and dove in. I released myself from social norms and licked the bowl clean. I didn't care. I could have eaten a vat of this heavenly concoction. Anyway, for those who see this and want the TLDR version, stop what you are doing and make a bee line to Social52. You won't find better service and food combined anywhere. If you're coming for dinner come a little earlier as this turns into a popular spot for drinking on the weekends and can get packed. read more

Sunday around 5p we headed out to an early dinner at Stella's, only to realize it was closed. Although I was on yelp looking for another spot, we found Social52 just driving by. When we walked in, it was almost empty. We were immediately greeted and seated. The waitress was amazing- super friendly and attentive. We ordered some beer and their house red wine, skipped any starters and just got down to business. The steak medallions with garlic whipped potatoes was fantastic! My husband got the chefs special of bacon-wrapped scallops and his friend ordered the Cuban sandwich. Everyone was happy.. So glad we found this place!! read more

So I only came for drinks, but their beer selection is fantastic. Got a Hardywood coffee stout, and it was fantastic. It wasn't as heavy as I anticipated. Def plan on getting another. This is hard for me to rate, because of two things. One, it was 1 am at night and I was out clubbing, but I also needed food. Not exactly the time to see if a place is on point with their dining service. Two, on the menu the sweet potato fries were $3. I got charged $4 for them on my check. Why? Did they not update the menu? Did the bartender put it in wrong? It was noisy and half crowded so I did not mention it, but man, the principle of the thing still bothers me. Their wings were so great. They were tender and had this sauce that tasted both familiar and unique. Their sweet potatoes were also pretty good, and they give you a lot. Usually places skimp out on them for some reason. So, I was going to give this place a 4/5, but because of the extra mystery charge I would have to give it a 3/5. read more

Social52 completely ignored our 14 person reservation for New Year's Day leaving us literally out in the cold. Their excuse was people were lingering from earlier seatings. If you make a reservation, the theory is you get sat at that time. Finding another restaurant to go to for brunch for 14 people was not an easy task or something we expected or wanted to do. Had potential but in the end was a let down. They advertise themselves as craft beer bar, but they have limited taps and their bottle selection isn't swell. Most of the "craft beers" they have can be found in every bar in richmond. They do offer half off apps for their happy hour but their cheese plate was bland and the Brussels sprouts were over seasoned. The service was slow the past two times we've been in. read more

I went for Sunday brunch for reservations at 12. We sat down, and ordered a mimosa pitcher. The pitcher came with mostly ice; enough for 3 drinks. We finally placed our order around 12:45 and didn't receive our food until 1:30. The food didn't come out the way as asked, eggs weren't done over medium, cheese was on the wrong plate and biscuits were still raw in the middle. Social52 is my new favorite in Richmond! FINALLY food I'm not inclined to make at home--house pickled green beans, house made BBQ sauce, duck confit flatbread...YES First visit I had The Boss burger which was amazing and had very fresh ingredients along with a side of sweet potato fries. Along with my burger I had a couple of beers from their huge selection. They had most my favorite Belgian whits in stock and one I had never tried. Second visit was for brunch and Social52 did not disappoint, despite being insanely crowded. The place was packed so we sat at the bar and ordered Bloody Marys and a pitcher of Mimosa. The bartender gave us glasses with the vodka and we got to embellish them with items from the BM cart (Zing Zing, pickle juices, Worstechire, Old Bay, various olives, numerous hot sauces..). The mimosas were strong and I was happy. The bartender didn't just dump a bunch of OJ into the pitcher. I got the Chicken and Waffles and they were so pleasantly unique! Perfect balance between sweet and savory. You will not leave here hungry or sober and the staff is super friendly! read more
