Saturday nights are designed for ice cream parlors- even if it is raining and 48 degrees in June. We powered through the deluge to walk downtown for a treat this weekend and our efforts were not wasted! I was BLOWN away by how delicious our dessert was. BUT to be fair, I thought I was eating ice cream- I didnt realize it was gelato. Gelato is ALWAYS better- it begs the question about why people continue to make ice cream when there is a superior option. We both got larges, which didnt seem huge- but again, I think gelato is usually a smaller serving. Is it worse for me so I should eat less of it? I don't care and will likely never get anything but a large. It was roughly 6 bucks each which felt very reasonably priced for large, locally made, artisan gelato. I got half rhubarb, half chocolate. Chocolate anything is my absolute favorite and it didnt disappoint, but I wish that I had broken out and tried two distinct flavors instead one tried and true. The rhubarb was creamy and unusual and brought me back to the strawberry rhubarb pies of my childhood. My fiance got half black tea/lavender and half mint/lemon balm. He went back and forth with each bite about which flavor he preferred. While I want big aggressive flavors (and colors and noises etc) he is more of a simple and harmonious pleasures sort of fellow. He loved both. The flavors were delicate and lacy. The tea was distinct, but the notes of lavender sang through. I am only removing a star because we rushed down there for 8:00 pm on Saturday based on their Google hours. They were clearly open until 9 (which is correct on Yelp). This was a bummer as we were stressed getting there on time. I'd recommend updating across all the platform Also, they weren't doing samples due to Covid which is sort of understanding. However, if your thing is to have unusual flavors, its a tough sell if you can't do samples. It seems like there are some easy ways around this. How about pre-packaged little samples kept in folded wax paper? Little sauce take-out containers? lined up on the wooden sample sticks? They clearly have a lot of creativity and imagination based on their product, it seems like a solution to this problem could be found so that more timid eaters feel comfortably exploring their treats. read more

They have a variety of flavors but their main flavors they have year round are the sweet cream , Olympia Fog, cardamom, Sally butterscotch and chocolate . They have 3 different scoop sizes in a bowl or cone and you can put two flavors in each. I got the Olympia fog and sweet cream and my husband ordered the mango and butterscotch . I highly recommend the Olympia fog for the tea lovers it had such good flavor to it. The sweet cream is their Version of vanilla so delicious and can be paired with anything! Salty butterscotch was also good and my husband loved the tartness of the mango flavor ! I loved the Olympia fog so much that I took a medium size home! If you're someone who's never before had gelato, this is where you want to get your first taste. If you're someone who's had gelato before, this is where you want to go to realise all the other gelato you've ever had was mediocre at best. I can't praise Sofie's enough! Fantastic crew, amazing texture and flavours, and OMG those waffle cones with a hint of cinnamon are literally THE BEST I've ever had in my life. And I love that they have GF cones, clearly mark their GF and Vegan and DF flavours, and even do rewards cards ... because you know you'll be going back. A cute little ice cream joint at 222 Market, right next to Chelsea farm oyster bar. They had a good variety of flavors, my favorite is the Olympia fog, which is not something you usually see at other ice cream places. The service was good and very fast, although I knocked down one star because their waffle cone is cinnamon flavored which 1. I don't like cinnamon and 2. It's strong taste takes away the flavor of the ice cream. read more

This spot is a hidden gem! I can't believe I hadn't tried it sooner. Local, raw dairy AND it's from grass-fed cows?!? Sold. They have a ton of great flavors to choose from (the salted butterscotch was delicious!) and they make them right THERE in shop! The guy explained that he makes all sorts of new flavors regularly and the milk was literally this-morning-fresh. I also really liked how they used steel spoons for sampling and not plastic. I frequent this place a little too much and should probably branch out on flavors, but I absolutely love the Sweet Cream/Chocolate combination. Best thing about this place is the FLAVORS!!! *You guys know how I feel about crazy-unique flavors and combinations! Actually ... 2 best things are 1) the gelato flavors and 2) you can watch the gelato being made right in front of you with this pretty cool, life sized mixing machine with a person hand making the batch!!! I've been on a TEA kick yall ... so I had the "Oly-Fog" Gelato (Black Tea + Vanilla) with Almond Gelato. Y - U - M !!! My only complaint is that the little tin cup the Gelato is served in is way too small because it's so good you just cannot get enough. The other cool thing about coming in here is that they share space with several other eateries. It is an eclectic co-op space so you can one-stop-eat and grab grub before you get Gelato. I'm not usually a huge gelato person (I'm definitely in the frozen-custard-is-king camp), but the waffle cones are to absolutely die for, and the gelato itself is so satisfying on a hot day. How can anyone give Sofies less than 5 stars?!?!?!?! When you walk in, you're hit with the smell of fresh, handmade waffle cones, with a hint of cinnamon. If you're anything like me, that's 2-3 times a week and at this point you should buy ownership in sofies or start scooping part time to pay for your habit. Sofies makes all of their gelato in store, in small batches, full of flavor. (yep, you get to see them working on it too!) You know the standard flavors they carry, like oly fog, sweet cream, chocolate, salty b and cardamom. But you hunt for the specialty flavors... it's like a mystery when you walk in! Stracciatella, say that 5 times fast...is my whole world. Whether it's dairy free mint, dairy free with strawberry, regular, espresso, or if you're taking my heart, it's blackberry. George Washington bush, or George Michael Bluth, is my baby girls favorite because she can't get enough banana. Ginger snap makes you sing praises that winter is coming. Lemon, orange dreamsicle and mixed berry have all of the summer vibes. Sofies makes fun flavors like olive oil, lemon and lavender, blackberry or strawberry mascarpone, plain strawberry, and so many more. They offer 2 dairy free flavors everyday!You can always call ahead to ask what they're scooping, because they switch it up each day. 5 stars does not quite capture how much we LOVE Sofie's Scoops. We have been coming since before they opened and love Sofie and Chris and their entire staff. The flavors are all delicious made with quality ingredients and a lot of love. My go to flavor is Salty B combined with either chocolate or coffee or some other delicious flavor. It's tasty good and it shows in the freshness of of the cream and the creativity of the flavors. I had the ginger cardamom and it was so tasty! Googled desserts in Olympia and came across this place that has good customer service! My favorite was the lemon mascarpone as it was creamy and delicious. My friend caro got that and the butterscotch which made for a good pairing. Would definitely recommend this place - hence the 5 stars. Sooooooo this is the best gelato spot, and here's why: They make it right there in shop, small batch, with great ingredients. They always have new rotating special flavors that I'm excited to try, but also have some solid classics always in the case (like salty butterscotch, and sweet cream). Best of all, always at least two vegan options (sorbetto or coconut based) for everyone to enjoy! If dairy free chocolate is an option, always get it. Same with creamy citrus flavors like Orange dream. I loved that they adapted to covid lockdown by offering gelato delivery (!!!) I really enjoyed the flavors here, the Olympia fog was a great combination. The area was clean the staff were friendly but there was just one shortfall: The cone. Honestly, I want to give Sofie's 4 stars because the flavors ARE really good. However, I've eaten at a lot of ice cream/gelato/custard spots, especially the artisanal type, in the past few years and if you want to be considered above average in my book, you need to provide the full experience. Apparently Sofie's make there own cones (according to another Yelper who corrected me). However, the cones taste super sugary and deliver a crystallized crunchy mouth feel, likely from the melted cane sugar. I guess what I'm looking for is something a little more naturally sweet tasting to nibble on at the end, so maybe a waffle cone option would be a great addition. read more
